Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address: (READ IT AGAIN)

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that “all men are created equal”
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who died here, that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow, this ground– The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; while it can never forget what they did here.
It is rather for us, the living, to stand here, we here be dedica-ted to the great task remaining before us — that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth. – Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863

Mardi Gras!

Bon Temp Rouler! “Let the good times roll!”
Mardi Gras! Aiko Aiko All Day!
Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, is a Mardi Gras Carnival celebration on the last day before Ash Wednesday. Parades, parties, masks, costumes, and outrageous behavior are the order of the day before the fasting season of Lent begins. Mardi Gras dates back to the ancient Roman festival honoring Lupercalia and Saturnalia in February. Christians adapted the festival into a pre-Lent tradition.
The first recorded Mardi Gras celebration on the USA was in Mobile, Alabama, in 1703.
The first Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans was in 1837. And on Fat Tuesday, the parades end and the parties finish with the Meeting of the Courts at the Rex Ball.
In 1875, the State of Louisiana declared Fat Tuesday an official holiday.

February 29th – HAPPY LEAP YEAR 2020!
If the last two digits of the year are divisible by four then it’s a leap year.
One Solar Year = 365 Days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds
(the time it takes the Earth to make one full rotation around the Sun)

Leap Day is also known as Bachelor’s Day or Sadie Hawkins Day

The odds of being born on February 29th are 1 in 1461.

The official Leap Day Cocktail recipe:
(Invented by bartender Harry Craddock at the Savoy Hotel in 1928)
Combine ice, a dash of lemon juice, 2/3 gin, 1/6 Grand Marnier, 1/6 part sweet vermouth in a cocktail shaker. Shake, serve in a martini or rocks glass, garnish with a lemon peel.

Mixologist Harry Craddock “The Dean of Shakers”

Harry Craddock “The Dean of Shakers” (1875–1963) was born in Stroud, England, and was one of the top mixologists of the nineteen twenties and thirties. He immigrated to the United States in 1897 and learned bartending at Cleveland’s finest luxury hotel, the Hollenden. He became a US Citizen in 1916 and is drafted into the US Army during World War I in 1918. He also worked at the Hoffman House and the Knickerbocker Hotel before returning to England during Prohibition (1920-1933). In London, he became a bartender at the American Bar in the Savoy Hotel in 1920, was promoted to head bartender in 1926, cofounded the United Kingdom Bartenders’ Guild with William J. Tarling in 1934, and then became the head barman at the Dorchester Hotel in 1938.
He once invented three new drinks during an interview with a reporter, and is credited with inventing a number of classic cocktails (among the 240 he claimed he created), including the Dry Martini, the Corpse Reviver #2 and his signature drink the White Lady. He retired in 1947 at age 74 and died in Kensington, England in 1963.
Harry Craddock’s “The Savoy Cocktail Book” was published in 1930 by the hotel’s management, and is still in print today. Harry never got paid a hay-penny for it and it’s considered by many the most important cocktail book of the 20th Century!

WARNING! IT’S RANT TIME!
*AND WHAT ABOUT THE HOUSTON ASTROS CHEATING SCANDAL!*

IS IT OKAY TO CHEAT? IS IT OKAY TO LIE?
IS IT REALLY OKAY TO CHEAT? REALLY?
Major League Baseball FAIL! It doesn’t matter what your team allegiance is, they got caught cheating! THE HOUSTON ASTROS GOT CAUGHT CHEATING! They confessed too….
And There is NO PUNISHMENT! There is NO PENALTY! There is NOTHING.
What does this teach the children? Is it really okay to cheat?
What does this say about honesty, integrity, truth and justice? Really?
What does this say about “America’s Past Time” and the United States?

“Baseball is something more than a game to an American boy; it is his training field for life’s work. Destroy his faith in its squareness and honesty and you have destroyed something more; you have planted suspicion of all things in his heart.”

Happy Valentine’s Day! Cooking a nice steak dinner!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Cooking a nice steak dinner!

This Blog entry is about FOOD. Good Food! Food that’s good for you!
If you’re not into reading about a nice steak dinner, please move along.

It was a beautiful Sunday in the San Fernando Valley today. The weather was great! The first Sunday after football is always the hardest… but a beautiful day makes it easier.

Valentine’s Day is such a rip-off holiday. So, instead of going out and paying triple for dinner, I decided to cook a really nice holiday feast.

On the Menu: Teriyaki bone-in ribeye steaks, baked potato, steamed broccoli and carrots, green salad with ranch dressing, challah bread, red wine and a coke.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Cooking a steak dinner!

Defrosted a couple of bone-in ribeye steaks, prepped the potato, yam & vegetables and then made the salad. Timed it out perfectly and everything was done just right.

Nothing fancy, just a nice dinner at home.

Sauteed the red onions, marinaded the meat and pan cooked the steak. One steak cooked rare, one cooked medium rare. (leftovers for tomorrow: steak and eggs maybe?)
