LIVE at the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park on Saturday Night!

Saturday night’s alright for “Quadrophenia”!

NOTE: Still working on the “Road Trip” and “Burning Man” Blogs, but we decided to spend the money and see a LIVE show at the Greek Theatre on Saturday night.

Parking SUCKS at the Greek Theatre (and it always has). We tried to park at the “Offsite Parking Lot” for $10 and wanted to take the shuttle, but were greeted with “Unfortunately……”

It was explained by a lackey in orange vest that unless you paid online, they weren’t letting people pay cash and park because they didn’t have enough parking.
Because Griffith Park is TOO F*CKING SMALL AND DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH SPACE TO PARK EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO PARK OFFSITE!
JUST ANOTHER City of Los Angeles FAIL.
(just count on the City to FAIL everytime)

So we drove around and then up the hill to the Greek Theatre, with traffic on Los Feliz and Vermont, and paid $25 to park on the grass on a hillside above the theatre. At least they had rows of cars instead of just “stack parking” and packing them in like the old days.

21687863_1963199950373228_2200522469238820206_n

It cost us an extra $15. We didn’t have to offsite park or take the shuttle and then we walked over to WillCall and picked up our $100 ticket ($79.50 + $18.80 fees). We bought a $5 bottled water so the price tag for the evening was ~$130 + gas (and another $10 for a cocktail + tip later on the way home).

The Greek Theatre in Griffith Park is a very nice venue once you get past the parking.

Here’s a handy seating chart and aerial view of the Greek Theatre (not my pics):

Our $100 ticket was for Sec B, Row U, Seat 13 – an okay seat on the $$$ price scale. For another $25 we could have been more center, and for a couple hundred dollars more we could have been in Sec A or front of Terrace (Loge seats), but WHY?

Quadrophenia!

With Pete Townshend, Alfie Boe, Billy Idol, an orchestra and a choir!

21371276_1960392873987269_1084271538943205810_n

It wasn’t a rock concert. We knew that going in. It was a classical performance piece with full orchestra and a large choir. They performed the entire double album’s music beautifully and it rocked, but it wasn’t a rock concert and some people didn’t get it.

We really enjoyed the music, it’s one of our favorite WHO albums, and it was great to see it performed live with the orchestra and choir. The sound was really good at the Greek, and with the exception of the audience, it was a very good show.

EXIT (Stage Left): So, we waited for the Greek to empty out and there still was a line to get out of the GATED AREA. It is a VERY DANGEROUS EXIT because if there were an emergency, people would get crushed trying to escape. They didn’t have the large gates open, so everyone had to funnel into and out through the entrance point.

Drive through Griffith Park at night!

We walked back to our car and waited for the parking lot to empty, and the line at the restrooms to clear, then instead of driving down the hill back to Los Feliz, we drove through the park and then down to Western Avenue. There are great views of the city and Downtown Los Angeles from the road through the park, but the only pictures we took were in the tunnel because of the traffic and people walking to their cars.

Tunnel Vision! Drive Through Griffith Park!

Saturday Night! We drove through Ferndell to Los Feliz and down Western to Hollywood Blvd. We got on the 101 freeway and headed back to the valley, and decided to stop for a post-show drink at the Chimneysweep Lounge in Sherman Oaks on the way home. It used to be a real “hole-in-the-wall” dive bar, but then it was taken over by hipsters…

We got a seat at the bar and enjoyed a Stoli rocks with a lime (our first and only drink of the evening). We people watched for a bit but they weren’t interesting people, decided we didn’t want to hang, so we headed home and ate some food before going to bed. It was a pretty fun night and we certainly enjoyed the music.

Fog on the Golden Gate Bridge! August Road Trip to Oregon!

Fog!

Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge from Marin county to San Francisco on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

Fog on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco

Well, it was a beautiful day in Marin with great weather and blue skies. San Francisco was totally “socked in” in the fog as soon as you hit the Rainbow tunnel. I love that the tourists still walk the bridge with almost zero visibility.

There is still a toll to enter the city from Marin, and they don’t take cash or have toll takers! You have to pay by “fasttrak” or by credit card online, otherwise they’ll invoice you…. F*CKERS! (another reason to hate San Francisco)

I have returned from my August 2015 Road Trip to Ashland, Oregon. On the return trip, I decided to cut over to the coast on Saturday afternoon through Marin and San Francisco and take Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Cruz.

Road Trip - Rest Stop at Sunset on Saturday

Road Trip – Rest Stop at Sunset on Saturday

Random Pics of Los Angeles (part one)

Random Pics of Los Angeles (part one)

Had a meeting in Santa Monica yesterday, so I made the drive and took some cool pics. I wanted to cruise to Malibu, but there was major construction and a “traffic delay” on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). Thought I’d share some of the pics I took plus a few others from other trips that I haven’t posted that are also interesting.

Here are some (hence the part one) in no particular order or narrative:

30-JUN-13: Kanan Road to the Beach

Kanan Road to the Beach

Hot Sunday Afternoon. Let’s drive to the “Bu”, Malibu!
This probably looks familiar to my local peeps.

More pics and a story too:

A very hot Sunday Afternoon in Los Angeles.  An invitation to a food and wine event at an estate and winery in Malibu.  A beautiful day for a drive…

(copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Except that there was a lot of traffic on the freeway heading for the beach.  And if you waited in the long half-mile line to exit the freeway at Kanan Road, you probably added at least a half hour in wait time…

They’re doing construction/maintenance on the tunnels on Kanan, so they have one lane in each direction through one of the tunnels.  Growing up in Los Angeles, these tunnels represented the border between the valley and the beach.

NOTE: Don’t try this at home!

NOW HERE’S WHERE THE DAY WENT WRONG:

We arrived at the event and the parking was at the ranch next door.  The parking was far away, along the unpaved road, next to the horse corrals.  They invited a lot of people and most brought a guest along, then they made them walk in the heat and dust to wait for a shuttle into the winery.

(copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

(copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Here’s a pic of lots of luxury cars (three Mercedes front to back) parked along the dirt road.  The shuttle stop is somewhere past all these cars and then up a hill.  Oh yeah, it’s 105 degrees!!!

(copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

(copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Every time a car drives by you, you get dusted, and you’re dripping wet before you get to the shuttle stop.  Then you find out they only have two 8 passenger vans running the 200+ people up the hill, and there are a hundred people waiting ahead of you…

(copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

(copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Oh yeah, no shade and it’s 105 degrees!!!  ABORT MISSION!  I bailed immediately once I realized it was going to be an hour waiting in the heat and dust.  Unbelievable bad planning!  And truly less than impressive.

Here’s the thing.  I’m young compared to many of the guests that were invited and I knew it would be hot.  I put on the sunscreen, dressed for the hot weather, and brought a bottle of water and a hat for the sun.  Most of the guests did not!  Asking elderly people to hike in the dust and stand in the sun without shade on a dangerously hot day is a recipe for disaster.

And I can’t even imagine how long it took them to get out of the event.  After food and wine, having to be shuttled down the hill, walking in the heat and dust, trying to turn their luxury cars around, and then trying to turn out of the ranch’s driveway onto Kanan Road, with traffic returning from a day at the beach.  And then of course you have the freeway traffic to contend with too.  What a nightmare!
