UPDATED: Did you hear what happened in Boston?
In Boston, during a verbal dispute, an unarmed teenage boy was forcefully hit in the head with the butt of a weapon by local law enforcement.
Word of the incident spread quickly, and a large number of locals gathered in the street where the incident had happened to protest almost immediately.
As the crowd grew, angry protesters shouted slogans; some business owners, fearing property damage, shut their doors. The local authorities called for uniformed backup; backup came, well-armed.
The assembly was deemed “unlawful,” and the crowd was ordered to disperse. The protesters began to throw dirt clods in response.
In response, multiple uniformed law enforcers fired on the crowd. The first protester to die was a black man and the authorities justified the shooting by claiming that they “feared for their lives.”

The above events happened in the year 1770, the authorities were British soldiers, the protest would later be called the Boston Massacre, and the first protester killed in that conflict was Crispus Attucks, a black man considered by many to be a heroic American patriot and the first casualty of the American Revolution.

This is what we’re up against. This is who they are:
POLICE BRUTALITY AND POLICE VIOLENCE IS AN EVERYDAY REALITY!
Everyone has a camera! Everyone is watching now! 

Austin police have killed a young man by shooting him in the head with bird shot rounds wrapped in cloth, and continued to shoot the medics carrying his body. They shot a known pregnant woman in the stomach, then stormed and abducted her from a medic tent. They maced young children during a peaceful daytime protest.

Detroit police have brutally beaten, tear gassed and arrested my friends peacefully protesting. A curfew is set from 8pm to 5am city wide.

Rockford police dragged people from their cars and beat them last night.

Minneapolis police shot at people filming them on their own balconies.
Los Angeles Sheriffs also shot at people filming them from their homes.

An NYPD officer called a woman a “fucking bitch” and threw her on the ground. She went into a seizure and had to go to the emergency room. Then more New York cops rammed into crowds of protesters with their cars.

An Atlanta couple last night had their tires slashed, windows broken, and were dragged out of their car and tazed.

Chicago police announced a curfew and then raised the bridges out of downtown. Demonstrators were trapped and at the utter mercy of CPD roundups. A police supervisor ordered on the radio, “Gas ’em all.” Over 1,000 people have been arrested.

Everywhere, journalists are being indiscriminately targeted and arrested. A Minneapolis photojournalist is blinded permanently in one eye after being hit by a less lethal round.

They’ve maced children. They’ve torn off a woman’s hijab. They’re turning off their body cameras and hiding their badge numbers.

This is just what’s been documented. Imagine what hasn’t been.

The true nature of American policing has been revealed for the world to see. I have never seen brutality on such a massive scale. They don’t care if you’re peaceful. They don’t care if they’re on camera.

Black and brown youth are the leaders on the ground. They are the leaders of our future. Black and brown youth are the people who are bleeding, getting beaten, and being thrown into jail. This is trauma that will last their whole lives.

To the bail funds. To the phone lines to demand release. We have to protect our people.

One of the men accused of murdering unarmed black man Ahmaud Arbery in the US state of Georgia used a racial slur after shooting him, a court has heard. A Georgia state investigator said Travis McMichael used the slur and an expletive as Mr Arbery lay on the ground. Mr Arbery was jogging when he was chased down by Mr McMichael and his father in Brunswick in February. The case caused widespread outrage after footage was leaked online. Travis and Gregory McMichael are facing murder charges. Another man, William Bryan, faces charges of murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.

Tuesday, May 5, 2020 – It’s Cinco de Mayo! STAYTHEFUCKHOME!

2:30am: We ate the chili dogs and fell asleep for a bit.
And when we woke up it was Tuesday morning around 1:00am!
We took the dogs out again and we are back in the Home Office.

11:30am: No one told me the gardeners were coming on Tuesday at 8:00am!
Of course, we were already awake, the dogs had already been outside and were fed.
So we got the newspapers and said “Good Morning” to the guys in the driveway.
They will be working in the backyard most of the day doing the hard labor stuff.
We had juice, an espresso, and a toasted bagel with cream cheese this morning.
We got the mail and we took the dogs out again a
nd now they’re asleep here in the Home Office.
Yeah, we’re hungry, and we could takea nap.
It’s a beautiful day today and it’s going to get HOT later.

2:15pm: Well, we didn’t eat, but we did take a nap for a little while.
And now it’s HOT and there’s a Hot Wind blowing. (Earthquake weather?)


And the day went by. So, we fed the dogs and we were outside in the sun.
The gardeners did a nice job clearing the backyard of stuff
and they pruned one tree all the way down to the sticks.

NOTE: We had a doctor’s appointment on March 4th, and there were a lot of really sick old people waiting at the hospital, and it totally freaked us out! We went into full “self-isolation” on March 5 or 6, and have only been out in public to go grocery shopping at the local markets a few times. And the last time we went to the market we got really freaked out by the crowd of people and lack of “social distancing”. Had four food deliveries since the forced lockdown began: two pizzas, Chinese food one night, and then Indian food last Friday (see our previous Blog Posts). So this is about DAY 45 of QUARANTINE!

6:00am We’re still awake. We didn’t sleep. We tried, but couldn’t.
We also didn’t eat dinner last night. We ate a PB&J sandwich around 3am.
We cooked and ate some bacon an hour ago.
8:00am Just fell asleep for about an hour and a half, and then woke up, took the dogs outside and fed them, got the newspapers, and now the morning business is done.
Drank a half glass of orange-pineapple juice, ate a piece of fresh pineapple,
and made a cup of espresso. And then we turned on the morning “news”….

The L.A. Regional Food Bank is giving away food in East L.A. today via a “drive-thru” distribution, people here are FOOD INSECURE! That means they don’t have food. 

TRAVEL NEWS: (Nobody is traveling, nobody is planning on travel anytime soon)
Airlines are in trouble. Cruise Lines are in trouble. Hotels are in trouble.
Tourist Attractions are in trouble. Restaurants are in trouble. You see the pattern.
Travel won’t resume until the emergency is resolved. There is no end in sight.
Cruise Lines may never recover, and they are responsible for spreading the disease!
Airlines, Hotels and Restaurants will have to forever change their business practices.
Tourist Attractions, Casinos, and anyplace the Public gathers in large numbers will have to adapt to the new need for safety. Insurers have to re-appraise conditions/coverage.
And the economy and the expected recession will affect travel plans for years to come.

At 12Noon We had a Happy Zoom Birthday Party for our Stepfather!

6:30pm We may have slept. And we have been outside.
We did some “gardening” in the backyard. It’s a beautiful day here in L.A.
We had the dogs outside a couple times for long stretches and some barking.
We fed them and took them outside again. And now it’s time for our dinner.

Lifting Restriction and Moving to Reopen is a HUGE MISTAKE!
There hasn’t been a proper Quarantine/Social Distancing period.
They’re also now talking about a second wave this coming WINTER!
But there’s about to be a second wave, everywhere there were protests, church meetings, and other large gatherings…. also, the homeless population have no place to isolate, clean themselves, wash their hands, etc. (also, some don’t even know there’s a virus!)

This time for small businesses who got totally screwed by big business
(publicly traded corporations) in the first round of relief.
People who need it are still waiting on the money!
Checks for individuals and families were delayed for Trump’s signature!

And the news media keeps bombarding us with these “Positive Spin” moments, that we tried to be specific about in a previous Blog Post. A wedding without guests, who sent pictures for the pews, so “they would be there in spirit”. And then a drive-by birthday! And then viral dancing with Grandma from far away! And FOOD DRIVES and volunteers!

Now there’s a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT filed against MLB and the LA Dodgers!
Major League Baseball has refused to refund tickets for the 2020 season, because the games aren’t cancelled yet…. a common practice at TicketMaster and LiveNation right now as they are losing more money everyday as this crisis goes on. So, fans who are getting stiffed on their tickets, some in for more than $5000 and they want their money!

8:00pm Okay, we ate dinner and watched “Jeopardy”.

On The Menu: Chili dogs! 2 long Polish dogs, cut to fit 3 buns, with mustard, cheese, chopped onion, and spicy steak chili from last weekend. With a dill pickle, celery, half an avocado, strawberries, and red grapes.

Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday,
is a Mardi Gras Carnival celebration on the last day before Ash Wednesday.

Parades, parties, masks, costumes, and outrageous behavior are the order of the day before the fasting season of Lent begins. Mardi Gras dates back to the ancient Roman festival honoring Lupercalia and Saturnalia in February. Christians adapted the festival into a pre-Lent tradition.

We cooked a nice meal at home and celebrated Fat Tuesday with family.
On The Menu: we made a big pot of spicy “cajun” chili with red beans, so we had a bowl topped with cheese, diced onion, and crushed tortilla chips; a salad with avocado and Caesar dressing, fresh cut pineapple, and warm “just baked” banana bread  for dessert with an iced espresso and later a beer.

It’s already January 15th, so we are two weeks into the NEW YEAR right now!

We were very sick with a cold for the first week of the year, and we are still recovering as the second week ends tonight. We have been living in our pajamas, bringing in food and scrounging for what’s still in the fridge and pantry. So, we haven’t really been out of the house much to enjoy the lovely winter weather here in Los Angeles. We’ve been taking care of our dogs and watching the world go to Hell on television and the interweb. We’ll hold off on POLITICS in this Blog Post because Martin Luther King Jr Day is coming and we’ll put it all together next week. It’s actually all very upsetting and depressing.

We went back to Las Vegas in December 2019, right after Thanksgiving and just before the holidays began. And we can say that we are very happy that the holidays are over! It’s snowing again in Ashland, Oregon today. We don’t like to travel during the holiday season for all the obvious reasons and the weather in Los Angeles in the winter is much more human friendly, so we usually stay local and celebrate with family and friends.

Tuesday Night Traffic on the 101 Freeway to Burbank

Doña Oxford perform at the Fire Victims Retro Relief benefit (see out previous Blog Post) and she was fantastic! So, we went back on Tuesday night and saw her again at Joe’s Great American Bar in Burbank>

The crowd was fun and friendly. Doña played 3 sets (we stayed for the first two) and she was awesome! Tuesday night is “swing dance” night and there are great dancers in the house and out on the floor. Really fun to watch as they Shag and Jitterbug! Joe’s has very reasonably priced strong drinks and their bar food looks pretty good (we still haven’t eaten there) also for a good price. If you’re okay with “fast food”, there’s a Taco Bell next door that’s open until midnight. We haven’t eaten any fast food (except for Habit Burger) in a very long time…. but it was there, and it was Tuesday.

So we ate, drank and listened to some great music, but we didn’t stay for the third set because we were tired, starting to get a headache, hungry again and our back was hurting something awful. Too much sitting and too much standing., so we headed home for bed before midnight.

NOTE: The price of going to a concert is out of control! $100+fees+parking+concessions to see a show is a luxury for most people, and most people can’t afford it these days. Please support Venues and Bands that don’t charge a COVER!

Taco Tuesday! Dinner at El Torito Mexican Restaurant in Sherman Oaks

Taco Tuesday! Mexican food at El Torito in Sherman Oaks.

Thinking about chips and salsa! We hit up the El Torito Mexican Restaurant at Ventura blvd and Van Nuys blvd. There’s a parking lot that’s always full, valet parking and (TIP) street parking available. If you get lucky, you’ll find a parking space in the lot. If you’re smart you’ll find street parking at a meter on Ventura blvd, Moorpark street or Van Nuys blvd.

Enter through the double doors and into the reception area. There’s a Taco Bar (and Lunch and Brunch) Buffet area and a hallway to the restrooms on the left. The Bar is ahead of you behind the hostess desk and the large dining room divided into three areas is to the right.

The Bar is usually busy, and on Tuesdays it is really crowded because of the Taco Tuesday $1.99 Taco special (It used to be $1.00) and the Taco Bar spread which is only available in the Bar area. It’s also very loud with music and conversation, so we decided on the regular menu and a comfortable booth in a quiet corner of the center dining room.

The Bar is pretty fun if you can find a seat. They have beer, wine and spirits. Usually there’s a tequila drink (margarita) on special or it’s “happy hour” and there’s always a game on the televisions and loud music playing.

Besides the Taco special and Taco Bar Buffet, they have a Bar Menu with appetizers and small plates and you can order off the regular menu in the Bar area as well.

Taco Tuesday! The Taco Bar Buffet at El Torito in Sherman Oaks

I haven’t tried the lunch buffet or Saturday/Sunday brunch in a long time, but it’s a pretty good value and a they have a lot of different choices available. A Mexican food buffet is always pretty good! Tacos, burrito makings, fajitas, enchiladas, tamales, rice, beans, desserts, fruit, salads, soups, salsas and more; and then breakfast foods, menudo, juices and pastries for the weekend Brunch buffets.

The Dining Room is large and spacious, and divided into three areas. There are tables and large booths available. The menu is traditional Mexican (gringo-style) fare, but they recently upgraded the recipes and the food is very tasty and you get a lot of it!

Warm Tortilla Chips & Roasted Pepper Salsa

The chips are made fresh and served warm with roasted pepper salsa. They’ll make fresh guacamole at your table if you order it. They have a good selection of appetizers, entrees and ala carte items. Not so much on dessert, only deep fried ice cream, flan and a tres leches cake. Free refills on soda and most other beverages and more chips and salsa too.

Fiesta Platter! Nachos, Beef Flautas, Chicken Wings & a Cheese Quesadilla

I recommend the Fiesta Platter to start. Eat the nachos and chicken wings, take home the quesadilla and flautas. Then order a Macho Combo (your choice of four items) with rice, beans and sweet corn cake. Eat what you can and take home the rest for tomorrow.

Happy Birthday! Mexican Birthday Song at El Torito Restaurant!

It wasn’t my birthday, but the waitstaff came over and sang to the table next to ours so I got a nice picture. The service was excellent! I didn’t have to look around for our waiter because he was checking in with us regularly. When I finished the coke, he was right there asking “would you like a refill?”. Every request was handle promptly and the Manager even came by to ask how everything was.

The prices are reasonable. The Buffets and Specials are a pretty good value if you’re hungry and want to eat a lot of food. Drinks are also pretty reasonable and some of the drink specials are excellent! You get a lot of food and we even got a AAA discount on the check!

It was a very good meal and a pleasant dining experience. Good food and lot of it. The service was excellent and it wasn’t too expensive. A Very Happy Taco Tuesday!

Arrive Very Early! Get parking or take the Shuttle, Allow plenty of time and avoid the rush. Don’t be the latecomer just starting your picnic when the concert starts! Proper Hollywood Bowl etiquette is FINISH your dinner BEFORE the start of the show!

We had Box Seats and brought a picnic dinner. The boxes are nice because they provide a fold-down table for dining which they will remove before the concert begins. Two things about dining in the box: you’ll be at a different level than your table partner because of the raked theater seating and the boxes are tight and a little close quarters. It can be difficult to maneuver, but the canvas seats in the boxes are so much better than the benches (even with a cushion). Note: They recently replaced all the old wood benches with new stadium benches, and there are also a couple non-box sections with stadium seating.

The Hollywood Bowl is fully accessible for guests with special needs, just be aware of the steep hillside terrain and large crowds that can at times be difficult to navigate.

The best dining option at the Hollywood Bowl is to bring your own picnic dinner. They even let you bring wine, beer, and other beverages for the classical concerts, but you should always check because they have restriction and are pretty strict about them at the rock and family events, and at big events where they are selling alcohol.

They also have a sit down outdoor patio restaurant, Patina at the Bowl, but you’ll need a reservation in advance! And they have concession stands that serve overpriced snack food and drinks, alcohol service varies.

TIP: You can park and picnic at the Ford Theatre across Highland when they don’t have a conflicting event. Or, the best place to picnic is at the top of the Bowl! Ride the escalators all the way up to the picnic area with tables, benches, and a great view of the city. Seating is first come, first served so arrive early and allow time for parking, walking and dining!

ON THE MENU: Lamb/Turkey Shwarma, rice, hummus, tabouli, falafel, pita bread, tahini and hot sauce, baby carrots, avocado, string cheese, sweet potato tortilla chips, cherries, an apple, Hershey’s chocolate bar, red wine, Pellegrino water, and a coke.

We like to bring too much food and take home the leftovers. It’s also nice because you can share your food with total strangers while you picnic. We ordered dinner from California Mediterranean Cafe and packed the sides, dessert and beverages from home. As I mentioned dining in the box can be difficult, but after going to the Bowl for years, it’s a practiced affair. Dinner was good. I was hungry. We finished eating, and put the food away.  They took away the garbage and the folding tables as the orchestra was tuning up.

Every show at the Hollywood Bowl begins with “The Star Spangled Banner”, and it’s okay to sing along, most people do it badly…

The weather was perfect. Not hot, nice breeze, not too cold. Perfect. The concert was good. A little too much “slow sleepy music” and not enough flourish on the pieces. The L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra is always great! The choice of the pieces and the flow of the show was a little “jerky”. Glenn Close singing two of the pieces was a nice touch, the Eleanor Rigby with Frankie Moreno from Vegas was different but very entertaining, and the quartet with Joshua Bell and Time for Three was just plain cool. The classical pieces were played and conducted well and the concert was very enjoyable.
