MONEY! MONEY! MONEY!

MONEY! MONEY! MONEY!
“Money, so they say, Is the root of all evil today”

Salary

Money is an economic unit that functions as a generally recognized
medium of exchange for transactional purposes in an economy.

“WHERE’S THE FUCKIN’ MONEY LEBOWSKI?” – “We want ze money!”

“Money puts your home on the range
Money puts the brother in the stock exchange
You make money on your 9 to 5
To earn your livings so you survive
It takes money to pay your rent and to eat
Without money, you’re hungry on the street
It takes money-money
Cash money-money, to the bill
So you steal some money, you go to jail
And then you turn around, need some for bail
Then you need a dime to call your lawyer
To plead and to say, say they never saw ya
But before ya, a lawyer will get you free
He asks how will ya pay his fee
But you have no money, you’re in a jam
Your lawyer has to throw the man in the slam…
It takes money to buy that TV set,
It takes money to place a casino bet.
It takes money to buy that radio,
And money for gas so your car will go.
It takes money for you to buy a house,
It takes money for a trap to catch a mouse.
It takes money to take a vacation trip,
And cruise the ocean on a luxury ship.
It takes money, money, money
It takes money to get interest from the bank.
It takes money for an army to buy a tank.
It takes money to pay your doctor bill,
And your psychiatrist if you’re acting ill.
It takes money, money, money………”

UNEMPLOYMENT! – Remember our CA EDD Unemployment Claim?
We wrote about a lot over the last month and a half….. trying to get paid.
Actually, trying to get BofA to fork over the money they were holding!
We wrote the Blog Post “CV! Part 136 – VICTORY!” last week.

large

WE FINALLY GOT BANK OF AMERICA TO RELEASE THE HOLD
ON OUR CA EDD DEBIT CARD! WE GOT OUR FUCKIN’ MONEY!

We followed up with the Assemblyman’s office.
They contacted the EDD and removed any holds or flags on account.
The EDD was supposed to have contacted BofA to let them know.
BofA still hadn’t activated the account.
A service rep for BofA called and left a message with a number a week before.
WE LEFT FOUR MESSAGES ON HIS VOICEMAIL WITHOUT A RESPONSE.

We finally emailed a BofA Corporate Executive.
And we went on Twitter and tweeted to another Corporate Executive.
We got a call from the BofA service rep after his normal “working” hours that day!
WE TOLD HIM OUR TALE OF TRYING TO GET THE EDD DEBIT CARD ACTIVATED.
Calling EDD and BofA, hours on hold, transferred to someone else, on hold for hours, disconnected, and sent to a dead end line that never answers more than once, and referred back and forth without anyone at BofA able to contact anyone at EDD, and then back to hours on hold with EDD. No one at EDD is able to contact BofA….WTF?
The BofA service rep confirmed the account was cleared and the card would be activated!
And IT WAS FINALLY ABLE TO BE ACTIVATED.
SO WE ACTIVATED OUR EDD DEBIT CARD. FUCK YOU BANK OF AMERICA!
AND THE NEXT MORNING WE DID A MANUAL CASH WITHDRAWAL AT OUR BANK
FROM OUR MONEY ON OUR EDD DEBIT CARD AND DEPOSITED IN OUR ACCOUNT.
NOTE: We left a small nominal amount on the card in case we need to put more money on it.
We have requested checks directly and we received our first check from the EDD.
We removed BofA from our business.
THEY ARE COMMITTING CRIMINAL FRAUD.

“Baby, I got my money!”

And we filed our next claim today, so the next payment is pending.

“Actually this is just a place for my stuff, ya know? That’s all, a little place for my stuff. That’s all I want, that’s all you need in life, is a little place for your stuff, ya know? That’s all you need in life, a little place for your stuff. That’s all your house is: a place to keep your stuff. If you didn’t have so much stuff, you wouldn’t need a house. “Winner, winner, chicken dinner.”
Our last trip to Las Vegas was in early December of 2019 before the pandemic.
That was the last time we traveled for fun and pleasure. And it was fun!
So, except for the California Lottery, we haven’t gambled in over a year.
And we only gambled a little on the Lottery (seriously way less than $100).26815118_1525444744199540_4842559744157764778_n

Las Vegas is at a limited 50% capacity, after reducing the restrictions last week.
And the crowds are back! Well, they’ve been back, (all the low-rollers are in town)
and they have been solid on the weekends for a couple months now.

We really want to travel. SIGH. We want to go to Las Vegas. We want to go to Hawaii.
We want to go to Europe. We want to go to Asia. We want to go to New York.
We want to go to Oregon. We want to go to Alaska. We even want to go to Disneyland.

Los Angeles Times Travel Show 2014

Saturday at the Los Angeles Times Travel Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Downtown Los Angeles: $15 Parking! West Hall LOT FULL so I parked across the street and walked in.  The lot was not full….

Welcome to the Los Angeles Convention Center!

Well, I started this blog with a post about last year’s LA Times Travel Show in February, so it’s almost been a year!  I skipped the “Trade Day” on Friday this year (for a variety of reasons) and got a late start on Saturday.  After navigating traffic on the 101 freeway, I arrived at the Convention Center downtown, paid for parking, parked the car and headed for badge pickup.

I hit the Trade Show Floor and visited the exhibitor booths.  I collected collateral material, brochures, handouts, one sheets, business cards and a little SWAG.  And I said “HELLO” to some of the industry friends I’ve met over the past year who were exhibiting at the show.

NOTE: There were too many “Timeshare” operations and not enough MAJOR VENDORS at the Travel Show.  I noted the same thing last year, and hoped this year would be better. Where were the major commercial airlines and hotel chains?  The cruise lines were represented but only with co-op exhibitors like Cruiseplanners.  After attending GBTA, LTX, and the Signature Sales Meeting (read my previous blogs), I’ve seen much better vendor attendance.  They really haven’t done enough to attract the major players to this show.

I’m going to rant a little now.  The high cost of parking is a major deterrent in getting the public to attend!  Parking used to be $6, then it went to $8, then $12 and now $15 for the event.  It’s too expensive, and then they charge the public admission ($10-12 per adult).  The show’s attendance reflects the high cost to attend, in that it wasn’t very crowded, which is nice if you do attend but it sure doesn’t help to attract big vendors and exhibitors.  I didn’t attend the “Trade Day” this year, but last year travel agent attendance was also a little light.  My advice would be to target the TRAVEL INDUSTRY and then allow the public to attend.  The other big problem, as noted above, were the SCAMS, BAIT AND SWITCH, and FAKE RAFFLES I witnessed walking the Trade Show Floor.  I wanted to call the LAPD Bunco and Fraud Investigators after seeing some of the blatant BS.  The show producers should monitor and control the “enticements” because when people feel ripped off they don’t come back next year!  There also weren’t enough MAJOR VENDORS and there definitely wasn’t enough SWAG!  I was able to completely canvas the Trade Show floor and see a few presentations in a couple of hours…it should have taken much longer.

There were some good speakers and nice presentations which were well attended, but the show could have been a lot more entertaining.

It was such a beautiful day in Los Angeles, it was almost a shame to have to be indoors.  I took this pic of the Convention Center, Nokia Theater, Ritz Carlton, J.W. Marriott and Staples Center from the “smoking” patio just outside the show floor on my way out.

And just to add insult to injury, I had to walk all the way back to my car through the West Hall Parking Lot because a little lady in an orange vest didn’t know the lot wasn’t full.

Wednesday 1pm:  Road Trip!  Off to Las Vegas, Nevada for the annual Signature Sales Meeting and Trade Show! Finished my last minute work and ran a few errands, packed up the car and hit the highway. 101 south to the 134 east to the 210 east to the 10 east to the 215 east to the 15 north.  Other people from my office chose to fly but I prefer to drive.

The first thing you notice about the MGM Grand is it’s money green color.  The second thing you notice is that it’s HUGE!  You’ll notice this as you drive around the self parking structure and as you try to navigate your way to the registration desk, and as you stand in the long line to check in.  You’ll be reminded during your stay of how huge it is just trying to get from point A to point B, in particular the distance from your room to the Conference Center where your sales meeting and trade show is being held.

It truly is a “mega-resort” and has something for just about everyone.  It also has the two biggest problem of a “mega-resort” operation: nobody is directly in charge and the important details get missed and/or overlooked!

Wednesday 6pm: Standing for 30 minutes in line at Check In until an “on the ball” Manager came and helped speed things up.  You can see your tweets on the big screen while you wait…

There was a good Group Rate offered to our convention with substantial savings on the Friday and Saturday rate, but the Casino Rate was better for Wednesday and Thursday night. Be sure to get your “M Life” Players Card to take full advantage if you’re a gambler!

After finally checking in, I checked out my Grand King room (with a view) on the 24th floor. It was down a very long mega-hallway.  I had requested a refrigerator with my reservation, which was promptly delivered, as were the extra towels and pillows when I called down to Housekeeping.  The room was very clean and comfortable, but the bathroom was a little small.  I was also comparing it to my recent stay at the Venetian in an Executive King in September for LTX (the Luxury Travel Exchange) which was great.  See the Blog!

I want to compliment everyone at the MGM Grand.  Everyone I talked to in person or on the phone was friendly, courteous and professional.  When I complained about a problem they were quick to apologize, tried to correct it or offered a F&B Credit.  Eventually, my F&B was comped by my “M-Life” Casino VIP Card, so I made the request and they comped one night of my stay instead.

I went to get my luggage and when I got back to the room, a Welcome Amenity was waiting!  Snacks and bottled water from the “on the ball” Manager at Check In, very well done!

I had a $50 Food and Beverage Credit so I decided to try the MGM Grand Buffet $30 plus tip paid in advance. I was left wondering who oversees the food quality.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: BAD FOOD ALERT!!!)

The worst buffet ever!  Everything was overcooked and under seasoned!  I really didn’t eat that much, but I tried to taste most of the food and ended up feeling sick to my stomach for all three days I was there.  When I say everything was bad, I mean EVERYTHING WAS BAD except the fried chicken.  Here are pics, the food looks okay but it had little to no taste and wasn’t prepared well (mostly overcooked or cold).  How do you ruin crab legs?

Quite a selection, and I love dessert, but I tried a lot of different things and was amazed that even the deserts were mediocre to just plain bad.  As I told my friends, there are great buffets in Las Vegas, this isn’t one of them.

NOTE: The pillow stuck in the bedframe!  I banged my shin on the sharp corner twice, the second time drawing blood!  So, I was forced to improvise and used the pillow to prevent further injury.  When the room service waiter came she laughed when she saw it…because she and everyone she works with have banged their shins too.

Day One – Thursday – Signature Sales Meeting and Networking Session #1

Woke up to find out the TV and WiFi wasn’t working hotel wide.  No internet makes my work as a travel agent very difficult.  I got ready for the first day and walked the mile to the Conference Center and arrived at Registration at 8am.  There was a continental breakfast buffet and coffee service for attendees.

Breakfast was hosted by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and offered muffins, danish, fruit, and fruit juice served on carts in the event lobby. Coffee and tea was also available all day long.

Thursday 8:30am: Workshop #1 – The Inside Track on Signature’s 2014 Hotels and Resorts Program.  Industry trends, recent hotel additions to our consortium, updates regarding to our hotel programs, and special offers and amenities for our clients were the topic of the seminar. After the first session there was a break with refreshments hosted by Hertz (baked goods, soft drinks, bottled water, and coffee/tea service).

Thursday 9:45am: Workshop #2 – Mexico: Grow Your Business with Destination Expertise presented by the Mexico Tourism Board.  More Americans travel to Mexico than any other destination! After the session there was another break with refreshments hosted by Hertz.

Thursday 11am: General Session (welcome) and Lunch hosted by Classic Vacations.  There was a general update, a tribute to Michelle Morgan the past President who recently died from cancer, and a keynote address by Shawn Achor “The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance”.

Cocktails and Appetizers for invited guests.  Cheese, crackers, crudite’ (carrots, celery and dip) and an open bar. Networking, short host company presentations and someone won a trip to Switzerland, but it wasn’t me.

They took all the chairs out of the room, so it was a standing event after a long day and lots of walking.  There were two food tables and two bar stations, but the lines for food and drink got long very fast as the guests arrived.  It quickly became a lot of people in too small a space.

There was a guy blowing a Swiss horn for entertainment and he let a couple agents try to play it.

Two offensive cruise comedians and the BeatleManiacs entertained us!  The travel agents went wild, rushed the stage, and danced to the (almost) Beatles!  The guys were good musicians and the tunes were catchy, but their resemblance to the actual Beatles was questionable.  Great wigs and costumes!  Go ahead sing along, they know you want to.

“The Art of Hospitality” LWH Hotels event at the LUXE Hotel on Sunset

LWH Hotels presents “The Art of Hospitality” at the LUXE Hotel on Sunset

First, I want to say this was an excellent “first class” event.  The LUXE on Sunset is a beautiful property and in addition to the On Sunset restaurant they have great event space!

Traffic was bearable coming from the San Fernando Valley on the 405 freeway.  Massive construction at Sunset Blvd, but with a little patience I arrived early and dropped my car with valet parking.  It was unusually quiet in the reception and lobby area, but it’s a familiar space now. (I toured the property recently and was also here for the Holland America Line seminar last week – see my past blogs for more on both of those).

After the last prize drawing, everyone headed for the valet parking, so you had to move fast or you might end up waiting a long time to get your car back.  On exiting onto Church St and then heading north on Sepulveda, there was more construction: lane closures and the 405 freeway entrance was closed at Moraga…

Willett Travel is a proud Member of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and we were invited to the event at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.  I drove into Hollywood from the valley at 5pm, there was some rush hour “stop and go” traffic on the 101 Freeway before the 134 Freeway but once I got past the split it was smooth sailing into town.  It’s always tough to work your way through traffic down Highland but it really gets bad at this time of day.  Hollywood (at the intersections of Highland/Franklin, Hollywood/Highland-Cahuenga-Vine, Sunset/Highland-Cahuenga-Vine) needs pedestrian walkway/overpasses like they have in Las Vegas!

I could have valet parked, but instead self parked in the concrete dungeon at Hollywood & Highland across the street.  First two hours are only $2 with validation vs. discounted $6 for valet parking at the hotel.  Validations can be obtained from most of the merchants with a purchase or you can get one for FREE at the Visitor’s Information Desk.

Travel Tip: REMEMBER WHERE YOU PARKED!  The levels are color coded but once you’re on the escalators, it’s easy to forget or get confused because the doors and floors are not clearly labeled and the parking levels are as large as a football field.  Also, be sure to AutoPay before returning to your car.

I walked past the street performers and crowds on The Walk of Fame in front of the Dolby, El Capitan, and Chinese Theaters at Hollywood and Highland.

And then I crossed Hollywood Boulevard to the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

Because I entered from Hollywood Boulevard instead of from the valet parking portico, I had to go down one flight of stairs, through the basement hallway, and up the stairs on the other side of the hotel to check-in.

The Hollywood Expo was held in the Lobby and Roosevelt Room (where the first Academy Awards were held).  The hotel was completely renovated and is beautifully restored.  It has retained it’s historic decor and atmosphere while providing all the amenities of a first class property.

There was food and drink provided by some of the vendors (and two drink tickets for the full bar).  I had a hotdog from Pink’s, steak slices from BLT Steak, a mini thai shrimp salad, a cream puff from Panos Pastries, a little piece of red velvet cheesecake, a slice of pizza from Village Pizzeria, ice cream from Baskin Robbins, and a hamburger slider from the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.  There were other food vendors including Togo’s sandwiches, Fabiolus Cafe, event caterers and even a “shot from a block of ice” with ultra premium liquors that I did not sample.

I met Johnny Depp! (but he looked a little stiff and waxy and didn’t even say hello)

The costumed women from the Hollywood Carnavale were definitely the “Best Dressed”!

And Hollywood Politicians had vendor tables and were in attendance too.

The event ended about 8pm and I walked back to the parking garage.  Of course I took a few pictures on my way back.  Hollywood Blvd at Night is always very interesting!

Hollywood Blvd and the courtyard in front of the Chinese Theater wasn’t very crowded for whatever reason, so I had to take a few more pictures:

And even though it wasn’t Oscar night, it’s always fun to walk the Academy Awards path.

Down the escalator, paid the AUTOPARK, back to the car, out of the garage and onto Highland.

Hollywood knows how to throw a trade show!  There was lots of SWAG, food, drink, candy, and stuff but it wasn’t overwhelming.  I was there for about two and a half hours, met a lot of people who want to do business and collected their business cards, product information, and lots of fun stuff!

Best swag: there wasn’t really anything great.  I asked for a bottle of the Hula Girl mixer, which was great blended with ice and rum, but they were being super tight even at the close of the show and wouldn’t give it up (and I still gave them a mention here).

Best food: the Pink’s hotdog without having to wait in line, the steak from BLT Steak and the delicious cream puff from Panos Pastries!

I had a good time while I ate, drank and met some good people at the event.  It was definitely worth the price of parking.  NOTE: the first two hours at Hollywood&Highland are only $2 with validation, but if you go over two hours they stick you with an additional $4 charge.  It cost $6 and I didn’t have to tip the valet, so it’s still the least expensive parking in Hollywood!
