ūüĆľūüíõ Hello, I’m a dandelion.
A lot of people call me a weed but I’m a friend and come to help you!
When you see me, remember that I’m the ONLY one who wants and can grow in that particular spot. Because:
Either the soil is too compact / hard / stomped and I want to loosen it for you with my roots.
Or there is too little calcium in the soil – don’t worry, I will replenish that for you with the dying of my leaves.
Or the soil is too acidic. But I will also improve that for you if you give me the chance.
Or a mixture of the above reasons, of course. ūüėä
I’m here because your soil needs my help so best you let me grow without disturbing me! When everything is fixed, I will disappear again, I promise!
Are you trying to remove me prematurely with my root? However meticulous you are, I will return 2x as strong! Just until your soil is improved.
You can even tell by my growth at which stage my help is at. If my leaves are flat on the ground then I’m far from ready but if they all reach up then I’m already a long way on my way.
Something completely different is that I am 1 of the first bloomers in spring so I will announce spring / summer for you.
During the day when it’s hot, I open my flowers but in the evening when it cools off I close them again quickly. In fact, if it’s not hot enough during the day I won’t open them at all!
My flowers are the first food for insects after hibernation and unlike most other plants, I have pollen AND nectar, not merely one OR the other! And I am generous with them! ūü§™ūüėČ
My flowers are even delicious for you people by the way, did you know? I used to be called ′′honey (or gold) of the poor′′ because my flowers are so sweet in e.g. jam, sauce or salad! The internet is full of recipes Рcheck them out.
But wait until the end of May or later before you start picking and even then, don’t pick everything yet! The biodiversity and bees will be very grateful!

Dandelions are an herb that is native to Europe.
Dandelions can be found in mild climates
in temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere.

Taraxacum officinale is the most common species.
The common dandelion is a flowering herbaceous perennial plant.
The scientific study of the genus is known as taraxacology.

The English name comes from the French dent de lion ¬†(lion’s tooth)¬†
referring to the shape the leaves.

Dandelions are edible and high in nutritional value (vitamins, minerals and fiber).
All parts of the plant (flower, leaf, stem, and roots) can be eaten cooked or raw.
The roots can be dried, ground, and used to make tea.
Dandelions are available as packaged herbal supplements
(capsules, extracts, oils, and tinctures).
Dandelions contain high levels of the antioxidant beta-carotene and polyphenols.

Reduce cholesterol
Regulate blood sugar
Reduce inflammation
Lower blood pressure
Aid weight loss

Five ways to consume Dandelions:
  1. Dandelion green salad
  2. Sauteed Dandelion greens (cooking eliminates some of the bitter taste)

  4. Baking with Dandelion petals
  5. Dandelion root tea (and coffee substitute)

Dandelion tea acts as a diuretic and increases urine output.
It has also been used to improve appetite and soothe minor digestive ailments.

Dandelions have low toxicity and are safe for most people.

People with allergies to other plants like ragweed may also be allergic to Dandelions.
And people with sensitive skin may experience contact dermatitis (a rash or hives).

“A BIG BAG OF SICK”
We are working our way through it with two boxes of Kleenex.

Yes, we got our Flu Shot this year.
And now we are SICK with a Cold to start the new year.

We are at HOME. Being SICK = No Fun!
We stayed in on New Years Eve because we weren’t feeling well.

It starts in the throat, then moves to the head and nose….
SO CONGESTED! Want to sleep but can’t because we are so congested.

Running nose, watering eyes, headache, chills and sweats…
And there’s a mean cough and lots of phlegm and mucus too.

Drinking juice, water and tea,
And the chicken soup was good.

UPDATE Friday 9am: We slept a little, but still feeling sh*tty….
and Friday 2pm: This sickness has officially kicked my ass.
and Saturday 8am: Feel much better this morning!
We slept and when we woke up the cold was pretty much gone. And you know you are really sick when you don’t want to finish the sushi or bacon in front of you.

Our friend Master Sushi Chef Hiro-san previously owned Sushi Hirosuke in Encino and Kabuki Sushi in Northridge, and now he operates Sushi Ichiban Kan, located on Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills (actually it’s in Tarzana between Corbin and Winnetka).

The dining room is large, spacious and warm. The sushi bar has about 14 seats. There is a waiting area/lobby by the front door and host desk. Street parking (metered 8am-8pm) and free parking in a small lot off the alley in the rear is available.

Sushi Bar or Table? In addition to the regular menu, they have Monthly and Daily Specials, a Special Roll Menu and a Sushi Menu. They also do food “to go” and catering for parties.

Beer, wine and (hot & cold) sake are available with lunch or dinner.

ON THE MENU: Spicy tuna & spicy yellowtail cut rolls, baked scallop California roll, yellowtail-albacore-freshwater eel sushi, an order of “volcano”, a nigiri (mixed) sushi plate: albacore, tuna, yellowtail, salmon, mackerel, octopus, shrimp, tomago (egg), California roll, tuna and cucumber cut rolls and a coke.

My opinion is that this is the best sushi place in the San Fernando Valley and one of the best in Los Angeles. Hiro-san is a Master Chef and he gets the choice fish at the market. Everything they serve is wonderful, flavorful and super-fresh! It’s a little more expensive than most of the sushi restaurants in the valley, but it’s less expensive than most of the Westside and Hollywood places, and better quality than almost all others.

We’ve been here before, and it’s always good fresh food. It wasn’t busy when we arrived, but by the time we finished it was. We enjoyed our dinner and I left the restaurant happy.

I’m going to post a complaint about the service tonight: We sat at a table, not at the sushi bar, and halfway through the meal our server told us she was going on break without really having someone pickup our table. We had to flag down other restaurant staff to get drink refills, tempura sauce and the check. And we still left her a nice tip.

Good Shabbos y’all! So, the puppies had their “lady parts” surgery on Tuesday and we’ve been babysitting them during the recovery. One of the pups had a bad reaction and is kinda freaked out, so we’ve been really stressed trying to keep her calm and not catatonic…

Well, we had luke warm Indian food last night and didn’t really eat anything today, so we went out a little before 11pm to Cho Cho San, the sushi place down the street that’s open until midnight. They told me I had to get my order in by 11:10, so I did and then I ate at the sushi bar, paid and came home. The pups are resting comfortably and I’m full and happy.

On the menu: Shrimp&vegetable tempura, Firefly roll (spicy tuna inside, albacore on top with ancho paper and chili oil), Baked Scallop California roll with eel sauce, a large hot sake and an iced green tea. Happy weekend!

Thai Food! 

First time dining at the Sri Siam Cafe, a “Hole in the Wall” Thai Food restaurant in a mini-mall on the corner of Coldwater Cyn and Vanowen in North Hollywood. Everything was stellar! The portions were large and the prices were very reasonable. Each dish was done just right, super tasty and delicious. I give this establishment a big thumbs up!

On The Menu: Crispy rice salad (lettuce wraps), chicken satay with peanut sauce, cucumber salad and toast, yellow curry with duck, shrimp & egg pancakes, crispy spicy trout and a Thai iced tea with no cream.

Dinner at Sri Siam Cafe last night was terrific! The food was great, we’ve been back a few times now, and this time I brought a friend.

We had a very nice dinner party at Sri Siam Cafe on Friday night:

On The Menu: Crispy rice with pork, beef panang and steamed rice, chicken satay with cucumber salad and toast, pad Thai noodles with chicken, green curry chicken, tom kai soup and a Thai iced tea (no cream). There were three other dishes that I didn’t eat and we cancelled two other dishes that they didn’t bring. So much food, so full.

We were going for dinner tonight at Sushi Hirosuke and instead found this sad news taped to the door:

My friend Hiro, the sushi chef, opened this place in the early 90s and we used to have dinner here twice a week. He sold it to a nice couple who ran it for a long time. It was a good place, not great, but it was reasonably priced, local, and always good enough.

My friend Hiro-san now owns the amazingly awesome Sushi Ichiban Kan in Tarzana (you can read about it and see the pictures in my previous blogs).

There’s a lot of sushi competition in the neighborhood! On Ventura Boulevard, between Sepulveda and Reseda, there are more than fourteen sushi restaurants: Katsu-ya, Midori, Yamato, Benihana’s, Okamura, Cho Cho San, Dancing Wasabi, Octopus, Four on Six, Sushi Ajito, Crazy Tokyo, Sushi Tsune, Makoto, and¬†our new destination for dinner¬†Gyoro Gyoro Izakaya Japonaise Encino.

Upstairs in the mall where they shot “The 40 Year Old Virgin” is a new Japanese restaurant. I had heard nice things about it, but this was my very first time dining there. Ride the escalator or elevator to the third floor, enter the restaurant and enjoy the asian food and drink experience.

The Restaurant!

Tuesday at 7pm, the place was empty. When you enter through the restaurant you are greeted at the Host Desk by the Giant Face seen below. ¬†There’s a glass enclosed covered patio with a nice view of Ventura Blvd, the Sushi Bar area and a Dining Room area. We sat inside in a booth, which was too low for the table, wasn’t very comfortable for my back, and felt very cramped and claustrophobic. I did have a view of the glass enclosed kitchen, but could only see the grill from where I was seated.¬†

It’s a very pretty restaurant, done in very modern Japanese design. We were seated, greeted and provided with drinks while we perused the menu and decided on our food choices. They have a massive menu with sushi, salads, rolls, entrees, sides, and desserts….and it’s very confusing. They also have an ala carte sushi and sushi roll menu and a yakitori menu with all kinds of traditional (chicken, beef, vegetables) and weird things (intestines, livers, and other parts) grilled on a skewer. Mark those menus with a pencil.

The prices are VERY REASONABLE!!! You can eat a lot of different things, share them, try stuff you might never try if you feel adventurous, and just have a really big meal Japanese meal for a good price. The drink prices are also GREAT!

ON THE MENU: hot sake, cucumber with sesame sunomono, grilled shishito pepper, avocado & negitoro (spicy tuna), fried calamari, spicy tuna roll, Wisconsin roll (salmon and crab), sushi – salmon, yellowtail and albacore, potstickers, chicken meatball and pork kalbi skewers and an iced green tea. We also ordered the live Uni pasta, roasted eggplant side, and a big Spicy Tuna and Rice bowl (we asked for brown rice, but got steamed white rice instead).

Everything was good! The fish was good quality, fresh and tasty. The cooked stuff was also done right. The fried calamari was excellent! I also enjoyed the spicy tuna dishes quite a bit. The avocado and negitoro was a good choice. Next time I’ll have the pork kalbi salted instead of sauced and forget about the cucumber and sesame sunomono.

They’re open late weeknights, and really late on Fridays and Saturdays, so I might have to go back soon….

Great Dinner at Sushi Ichiban Kan in the Valley!

Far away from the Westside and Hollywood and Santa Monica and Downtown, in the west end of the San Fernando Valley, is one of my favorite restaurants: Sushi Ichiban Kan.

The restaurant is beautiful, from the front to the back, and the parking is FREE! ¬†Or at worst, you’ll have to park at a meter (which now run until 8pm) on Ventura. ¬†We went to dinner early, parked in the rear and entered through the back door. ¬†We were greeted and seated and then the real fun began

Dinner tonight was fantastic! ¬†Everything was fresh. ¬†Everything was prepared beautifully. The service was friendly and efficient. ¬†I’ve known the owner and masterchef Hirosuke and his wife for twenty years and have followed him from Kabuki in Northridge, to Hirosuke in Encino, and now to the new restaurant Ichiban Kan on Ventura Blvd in Tarzana, between Corbin and Winnetka. ¬†Trust me, if you love sushi it is definitely worth the trip from wherever you are.

On the menu tonight: stuffed shitaki mushrooms stuffed with creamy crab starter, miso soup, green salad, spicy tuna and blue crab handrolls (with no rice), an assorted sashimi combination (with tuna, albacore, yellowtail, salmon), assorted tempura and an iced green tea.

It’s not cheap, but it’s not “over the top” expensive. ¬†You can get a lot worse and pay a lot more at other places. ¬†This is top of the line fish, that rivals Nobu, and it’s a real value for sushi lovers. ¬†Be sure to tell Hiro-san that I sent you!
