Where to Eat and Drink for Cheap in Las Vegas!

Where to Eat and Drink for Cheap in Las Vegas!

IMG08491-20131113-1753

Welcome to Las Vegas (copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Las Vegas, Nevada!
FOOD AND BEVERAGE

Are you hungry? Are you thirsty?
Do you want to eat? Do you want to drink?
Back in the day, it was all about “butts in the seats”
as one Pit Boss at Caesars Palace used to say to us.
Rooms, Food, Drinks, Cigars, Entertainment, ALL OF IT WAS COMPED!
It was all about GAMBLING and MONEY ON THE TABLE (or in the slot machine).
The casino winnings paid for everything, and the customer (PLAYER) was king!
And even if you lost your entire bankroll, you had a great time in Las Vegas.
And now, they “nickel and dime” you everywhere. Resort Fees. Paid Parking.
Entertainment Fees and Taxes. Upgrade Fees. Pool Fees. Reservation Fees.
AND WHAT THE FUCK IS THE DEAL WITH THE $20.00+ COCKTAILS?
Room rates fluctuate like airline ticket prices, and aggregators sell the leftovers.

And back in the day, the ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT Buffet, and $1.99 Steak & Eggs,
were draws to bring people into the casino and keep the players fed and inside.
But now Las Vegas is an International Dining Mecca! Cheap eats are hard to find.
FOOD and BEVERAGE is a major expense for any Las Vegas vacation.
It’s hard to find good food at good prices, but inexpensive dining options
outside the food court and not “fast food” are all around town!

NOTE: The Pricing and Hours of Operation may vary,
and are alway subject to change at any time for any reason.
Always check to see if the location is open, if a reservation is required,
(their pandemic requirements), and confirm the pricing ahead of time!
And then you won’t be surprised.

Additionally, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic,
some restaurants and bars are CLOSING PERMANENTLY!
We removed two from this list today because they just went out of business.

IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO TIP RIGHT,
YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO DRINK IN A BAR
OR EAT IN A RESTAURANT!

Go to a Liquor or Convenience Store
and eat and drink in your hotel room.

NOTE: Walgreens, CVS, and ABC Stores $2.00 – $5.00 Beer
are much cheaper than the hotel stores and gift shops.
You can find all kinds of prepackage food and snacks
(and more things you may need),
along with cheap beer, wine, booze, and bottled water,
at the Chain Stores on The Strip and Downtown.

TIP: Get a hotel/motel room with a kitchen or kitchenette!
You can bring food with you or buy food at a market or store.
Prepare your own meals/snacks and save money on food.
Request a refrigerator for your Hotel room if not provided, and say you
have “special diet requirements” to avoid an additional “refrigerator fee”
(kosher, diabetic, vegan, etc., and the fee to avoid is usually $25.00).

Hotel Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Ingredients:
2 Slices of Bread (butter optional)
2 Slices of Cheese
Optional: add other ingredients like sandwich meat, onions, etc.
Directions:
Tinfoil – make a cheese sandwich, wrap it in tinfoil
Heat the Hotel iron provided in your room to high heat.
Use the hot hotel iron to “grill” the sandwich.
Do not use uncooked meats! If using butter, use it lightly.
Do not use the ironing board or any flammable surface for “grilling”
CAUTION: Make sure you have ventilation, or are using the bathroom fan,
and avoid burning the sandwich. Do not trigger the SMOKE/FIRE ALARM!
Be sure to unplug and let the iron cool completely before storing it away.

7:10pm: Nothing happened today.
On The Menu:
Turkey and cheese sandwich for lunch. Sushi for dinner.
Spicy tuna cut roll, California roll, and a rainbow roll

8:35pm: We took a short nap after dinner with the dog.
We woke up and made an iced espresso. And we drank it.
Drink coffee. Drink Water.
Now we are watching the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on TV.

More athletes and staff tested positive for COVID-19 today.

9:55pm: We cut up a sweet and juicy watermelon and ate some too.
Watching the Olympics and surfing the interweb tonight.

11:00pm: Wednesday night recap of Wednesday. It was HOT.
The dogs got fed, and they went outside, and they had a great day.
We got dressed and drove the car to the Sushi restaurant and picked up dinner.
And that’s about the most exciting thing that happened here today.
The gardener came. The pool guy came. We slept most of the day away.

There was a pursuit in Fontana this afternoon,
but it was pretty much slow speed and stupid.
In the end the police pulled her out of the car. Suspect in custody.
Screen Shot 2021-07-28 at 18.45.00

And there was another pursuit late last night!
Guy on a moped/mini-bike went for a long ride with the police behind him,
even went the wrong way on the freeway,
until he ended up in Whittier Narrows park where he WIPED OUT
and ended up in the dirt. Suspect in custody.

May the Four Winds blow him safely home.

Remembering the “Neenster” on the sixth anniversary of her final day on this world
which was actually the 25th-26th, so we are a couple days late….
She just sent us a message as a reminder, and she will never be forgotten.

International Tiger Day!

12:20am: We took the dog outside.
We made and ate a “banana split” for a satisfying midnight dessert.

On The Menu: 2 scoops of Haagen-Daaz vanilla ice cream,
a small frozen banana (sliced), chocolate syrup, and whipped cream
222962379_4982007605159099_6772987262295625413_n

4:02am: We are still awake. The dog is sleeping on the bed.
The other dogs are in the bedroom sleeping. It’s really quiet.
We slept all day and took a nap in the evening.
Our sleep cycle and sleep patterns are truly messed up.
Today is Thursday. “IS THIS A WEEKDAY?”

8:30am: We fell asleep with the dog after 5:00am.
We turned on a podcast, crawled into bed, and fell asleep.
We woke up around 7:15am.

Well, it seems someone was breaking into cars and prowling homes and yards down the street this morning around 4:00am while we were still awake in the Home Office. They never made it down to our end of the block, maybe because they were spooked by the newspaper delivery guy or maybe because the neighbors alerted. So we talked with a detective from the LAPD out in the street this morning. There was a Home Invasion the other night less than a mile away that made the TV news and the Citizen App, and there have been a few others in the mid-valley recently. A lot of local property crime, armed robberies, and violent crimes connected to the “unhoused” that live along Ventura Blvd and in the Sepulveda Reservoir. And organized gangs are back in the valley looking for targets and victims. Crime has been getting a lot worse in the San Fernando Valley recently. We chased a guy out of the driveway when he was trying to steal the Mercedes (that we were about to return the dealer) in November 2020 (read the previous Blog Post). And those guys were pros and probably connected to the construction crew working across the street, because we haven’t had any problems with sketchy characters since they finished, until last night.

There’s been an underground poker game running out of the house on the corner for a couple months, and there was a game the other night. Usually 20-30 nice cars parked on the cross street, and a “doorman” in the driveway, when they are playing at house. And that’s also the corner where the guys were prowling around last night. We live in a very  “crime-free” neighborhood for the most part, so we take notice of strangers and any criminal activity is cause for concern. The violent Home Invasions have a West LA LAPD TASK FORCE working on the investigation, so they were canvasing our street along with the regular West Valley Division detectives. FUCK. One more thing.

The dogs got fed. The dogs went outside.
We got the newspapers and made an iced espresso.
Drink Coffee. Drink Water. Be Vigilant.

9:35am: We just made another iced espresso and then
we left a message for the detective who left his card on our front door.

A Tsunami warning was issued for parts of Alaska this morning
after an earthquake with a magnitude of ~8.2 occurred off the coast.

11:15am: We took the dogs outside. We got the mail. The housekeeper is here.
And we are chilling’ with the dogs in the Home Office until she is finished.

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

3:15pm: Well, we took a nap with the dogs. The housekeeper left.
We took the dogs outside. We made another iced espresso. It’s HOT out.
And it’s Thursday afternoon. We have to keep reminding ourself.

5:40pm: FUCK. FUCK. FUCK. (at 5:00pm again)
The dogs went outside. The dogs got fed. The dogs went outside.

Recapping Thursday night.
Chopped chicken salad delivered. Ate half, saved half.
Fell asleep. Woke up. Took the dog outside.

BOMBSHELL NEWS!
Simone Biles, the US Gymnastic Champion, pulled out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics event for mental health reasons (and physical health reasons because a mistake on the uneven bars, vault, or balance beam can be very bad). Most people applauded her decision and it’s now really big media news. Some people didn’t support her decision, and some even made jokes (like Michael Ché) and now they’re the target of American “cancel culture”.
And then US Gymnast Suni Lee won the Gold Medal and became our newest “American Hero”.

12:30am: Time for dinner.
We had leftover salad, so we used it for tacos.
On The Menu: 2 chicken chopped salad tacos
228013841_4987695291256997_115587041296690013_n

9:05am: We were up all morning and fell asleep around dawn.
And then we woke up.
The dogs went outside. The dogs got fed. The dogs went outside.
We drank an iced espresso. Drink Coffee. Drink Water.
We took a shower. We got dressed.

10:30am: We ran a couple errands. We went to our PO Box.
We went to the bank, and we went inside.
We contacted one masked person behind thick acrylic, the teller.
It’s a beautiful day in the SFV and it’s going to be HOT again.
We drove home. We got undressed.
And now we’re wearing our sweat shorts again.

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

7:40pm: Recapping Friday. Good Shabbos! It was HOT today.
We ate a little green jello with whipped cream. Then we took a nap.
We slept all afternoon. The dogs got fed and went outside.
We made an iced espresso.

It’s Friday night again. Another weekend for a week without end.
Seriously, what the F*CK? And how is it the END OF JULY already?
Tempus fugit. Time flies.

8:25pm: And we just played “fetch” with the little boy for a half hour.

On The Menu: Cubano sandwich with garlic chicken, dill pickle, avocado,
carrot and celery sticks, watermelon, and cherries for dinner,
with cran-raspberry-orange juice and an iced espresso to drink.

Dogs, TV, Tokyo Olympics, the interweb, YouTube vids, and writing Blog Posts
on Friday night to stay busy and entertained in the Home Office.

Saturday, July 31, 2021 – the last day of July!

Where were you on this day in 1983?
Grateful Dead at the Ventura County Fairgrounds

116375158_3885986671427870_250261337903080909_n

10:11am: One more Saturday morning.
We were awake until after 6:00am this morning.
We drank an iced espresso. Drink Coffee. Drink Water.
We ate a quesadilla with avocado and salsa verde.
We woke up at 9:30am. And we need a nap already.
The dogs got fed. The dogs went outside.
10:40am: The newspapers and the mail made it inside.
We made an iced espresso and took the dogs outside again.
Now we’re chillin’ with the dogs in the Home Office
and we managed to fall down a Blues Brothers rabbit hole this morning.

“Briefcase Full of Blues” is the debut album by The Blues Brothers.
It was released on November 28, 1978, by Atlantic Records.
It was recorded live on September 9, 1978, at the Universal Amphitheatre
in Los Angeles, when the band opened for comedian Steve Martin.

THE “Good Ole” BLUES BROTHERS BAND!
Steve “The Colonel” Cropper, Matt “Guitar” Murphy (RIP), Donald “Duck” Dunn (RIP), Willie “Too Big” Hall, Elwood, “Joliet” Jake (RIP), Murphy Dunne, Tom “Bones” Malone, Alan “Mister Fabulous” Rubin (RIP), and “Blue” Lou Marini. With a special shoutout to Paul “the Shiv” Schaffer!

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

3:30pm: We took a nap with the dogs. We woke up.
We took the dogs outside and got a glass of juice.
And we just took the dogs outside again. And it is HOT.

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

5:35pm: We took another nap with the dog. And we just woke up.
The dogs got fed. The dogs went outside. We ordered a pizza delivery.
On The Menu: Extra-large pizza with sausage and meatball delivered!

9:00pm: And suddenly, we are not stressed anymore.

We drank an iced espresso. We entertained ourself with YouTube vids.
Now we’re chillin’ in the Home Office.

Watching the Bertcast with Bert Kreischer on Youtube:
kreischer

And we watched the film “Outlaws” on a Showtime network,
about a violent Australian motorcycle gang named The Copperheads.
AND WHY DID WE WATCH IT? WHY?
We wanted to see how bad it was going to be. And it was bad.
It was gritty and raw, (and really bad and boring too) with some good acting.
It was a lot more real than “Sons of Anarchy” which we enjoyed.
And it was almost “Cinema Verité”, shot like real life,
but really it was just amateur (headache-inducing) camera work.

131380806_10224007344355252_726853013807487886_n

5:45am: We were up all night again.
And we just posted our “New Recipes For 2020” and “CV! Part 92” Blog Posts.

9:30am: We are so tired. And now we’ve had our second cup of espresso.
We may have slept for two hours this morning between 6:00 and 8:00am.

11:00pm: Well, it’s been another day. ThrowbackThursday.
More frustration. And we didn’t sleep, so we were cranky all day.
And we still haven’t eaten yet today really.
All we had 2 toasted English muffins with butter and raspberry jam, and a small banana.
We put on pants and ran errands today. And really tried to avoid other people.
We slept this afternoon for a little bit, and then we fell asleep again this evening.
Now we are awake and hungry. And we want Latkes, but then we have to cook.

Latkes
And CHECK OUT OUR OTHER RECIPES! (in our previous Blog Posts)
Just posted a “New Recipes for 2020” Blog Post below.

Friday, December 18, 2020 – Hanukkah’s over. ‘Tis the Season!

48366207_2595143717178845_1850678515670712320_n

We are not going to do a Christmas music or Christmas Blog Post.
There’s no reason to celebrate the holiday this year.
TRUMP KILLED CHRISTMAS – just like he killed 310000+ US Citizen….

“Home for the Holidays” has a new meaning this year.
As in STAY THE FUCK HOME! No Christmas Parties Please.
We are invited to our friend’s annual New Years’ Eve Party…..
and we are not going this year. Sorry, not sorry. But still sorry.
We won’t be attending any parties this year. but thanks for the invites!
And you shouldn’t attend any parties, gatherings, dinners, or other events!
We are dreaming of Las Vegas, and we are not going! Vegas isn’t safe.
We are “safer-at-home” in Los Angeles, sheltering in place, and waiting.
We cancelled the housekeeper’s second day this week, extra day off for her.
And we’ll still pay her. We love her! She is family, not just domestic help.

On The Menu: Chicken chili super soft taco with avocado at 12:30am.
131992901_4320662274626972_3280824254464150243_o

10:45am: Hello Friday.
We slept. We woke up. We’ve had two cups of espresso.
We ate 2 toasted english muffins with butter and raspberry jam for breakfast.
The dogs got fed. We got the newspapers and the mail.

4:00pm: We slept for awhile. 11:00-1:00, 1:00-2:00, 2:00-3:00
Wow, 4 hours, waking up every hour or so and then going back to sleep.
The dogs got fed an early supper and they had a long beautiful day of play and napping.

131155270_10223989824837275_6898127772267718134_n

We finished binge-watching “The Good Lord Bird” limited series about John Brown on Showtime. Very well done. Ethan Hawke is excellent as the madman lunatic fanatic!
Great period piece (pre-Civil War), excellent cast and acting, excellent cinematography,
It was also very well written and well executed, with a “timeless theme” that is very timely for our current state-of-affairs and all things BlackLivesMatter and more. Thumbs up.

On The Menu: Dinner delivered from The Cheesecake Factory: orange chicken with rice and vegetables, Sante Fe salad, tiramisu cheesecake, and a coke to drink.
131982446_4320656564627543_3427954092374045270_o

11:30pm: Then we fell asleep after dinner and cheesecake…and woke up around 10:30pm.

And then we watched TV and surfed the interweb.
Friday night on the Las Vegas Strip – there are still a lot of people out on the weekends!
And the Showgirl Mafia is always at work!
The week before Christmas in Vegas sucks.
And then imagine this year for locals in Las Vegas,
after 10 months of Trump’s CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC.
(screenshot from the “Not Leaving Las Vegas” livestream, we are still safer-at-home)
Screen Shot 2020-12-18 at 19.40.35
We watched music video reaction vids on YouTube.
Last night Jamel_AKA_Jamal discovered Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers!
And he did the new Grateful Dead “Ripple” video too!
Today he was introduced to Sister Rosetta Tharp! LOVE THIS GUY!
And then we watched a guy build a luxury jungle outhouse out of jungle stuff
with a machete, stone axe, basket, clay pot, and a shovel tool too.

Good Shabbos! Stay healthy! Be happy!
Have a great weekend at home in your bubble.

3:30pm: Saturday recap.
We finally fell asleep around 5:30am.
And we woke up before 8:00am…
there were two deliveries before 8:00am this morning.
Dogs, newspapers, mail taken care of…
Laid down to take a nap and got woken up again:
Guy knocking on my door to try to sell me solar power on a Saturday
during a pandemic is just one reason
the “RING” doorbell needs a pepper-spray accessory. Just sayin’.

NFL Football on Saturday! Buffalo Bills v. Denver Broncos at Mile-High.
Denver is wearing their all orange “throwback” uniforms –
AND THEY SHOULD NEVER WEAR THEM AGAIN! Just UGLY.
“The Broncos are the only team with a turnover in every game.”
The first half, the Broncos sucked, and the Bills led 21-7.
Then Denver forgot to bring their game in the second half.
YES THE BRONCOS LOST AGAIN.
And Green Bay beat Carolina in the evening game.
We changed the channel, and fell asleep again before the game ended.
We slept until about 7:30pm.

131909251_10224009711094419_3218920318507754980_n

On The Menu: We had a quesadilla with salsa and juice to drink for breakfast.
Then for lunch, 2 Hotdogs with mustard, dill pickle, carrots&celery sticks, half an avocado, raspberries, strawberries, and red grapes.

Sunday, December 20, 2020 – SUNDAY! SUNDAY!

On The Menu: Chicken matzah ball soup, that we made earlier in the day
and we finally ate some just after midnight. It was delicious and filling.

We slept for a couple hours this morning.
We had a cup of espresso and went to bed around 6:00am. Woke up around 10am.
The dogs got taken care of, of course.
We woke up feeling okay, but our day went to hell pretty quick.
TRIGGERED. PTSD. Trying to keep control of our emotions.
Feeling very angry. Feeling trapped. Feeling FURIOUS! Not wrong to feel this way.
We have some unresolved issues, from our “happy” childhood, from teen adolescence,
and some wounds that will never heal – no matter how hard we want them to.
TOTALLY TRIGGERED!

On The Menu: Sunday Brunch! Breakfast for lunch.
2 eggs over medium, bacon, quesadilla with salsa and red grapes

5:00pm: and things are a little better now – calm is restored temporarily – Breathe in.
Breathe out. WE ARE NOT OK. We took a short nap, and slept through most of the second football game today. The Rams lost to the NY Jets here in an empty just-built billion dollar stadium in Los Angeles. Seriously, they were still building SOFI Stadium last December!

And now its time for the Cleveland Browns v. New York Giants game!
The dogs got fed and we went outside, and now we are all chillin’ in the Home Office.
We had another espresso and we did a little cleaning up during the second half.
We knew the Browns were going to win, and they dominated all game long.
And it’s just after 8:00pm, the game is almost over.
Browns 20, Giants 6, with less than 2 minutes left,
so we don’t think they’re going to stage a comeback.
And we’re hungry for dinner or something now.

317000+ US DEAD from Covid-19 as of today: December 20, 2020 at 6:28pm PST
(these numbers are always under reported, so there are even more dead Americans)

NOTE: We have been avoiding thinking about the news.
And everytime we go on Twitter we get really angry, so trying not to visit Twitter too.
But you can’t help but hear about what’s happening:
CoronaVirus Out of Control – Hospitals Overwhelmed (0% ICU Beds in Los Angeles)
Russia Hacked the US Government and US Industry. (NO RESPONSE from Trump)
Electoral College confirms Joe Biden won again.
Trump and the GOP Traitors still refuse to concede the election.
And it’s Christmas, so the network news won’t cover anything important.

Tuesday, May 5, 2020 – It’s Cinco de Mayo! STAYTHEFUCKHOME!

2:30am: We ate the chili dogs and fell asleep for a bit.
And when we woke up it was Tuesday morning around 1:00am!
We took the dogs out again and we are back in the Home Office.

11:30am: No one told me the gardeners were coming on Tuesday at 8:00am!
Of course, we were already awake, the dogs had already been outside and were fed.
So we got the newspapers and said “Good Morning” to the guys in the driveway.
They will be working in the backyard most of the day doing the hard labor stuff.
We had juice, an espresso, and a toasted bagel with cream cheese this morning.
We got the mail and we took the dogs out again a
nd now they’re asleep here in the Home Office.
Yeah, we’re hungry, and we could takea nap.
It’s a beautiful day today and it’s going to get HOT later.

2:15pm: Well, we didn’t eat, but we did take a nap for a little while.
And now it’s HOT and there’s a Hot Wind blowing. (Earthquake weather?)

And the day went by. So, we fed the dogs and we were outside in the sun.
The gardeners did a nice job clearing the backyard of stuff
and they pruned one tree all the way down to the sticks.

Tuesday 2020 Thoughts.. JANUARY 2020.

How was your day? How was your week? How’s your year been so far?
It’s already January 15th, so we are two weeks into the NEW YEAR right now!
Did you make a New Year’s Resolution? How’s that going?

No problemo.
We are banging out the Blog Posts, so check out the 2020 Blogs below!

We were very sick with a cold for the first week of the year, and we are still recovering as the second week ends tonight. We have been living in our pajamas, bringing in food and scrounging for what’s still in the fridge and pantry. So, we haven’t really been out of the house much to enjoy the lovely winter weather here in Los Angeles. We’ve been taking care of our dogs and watching the world go to Hell on television and the interweb. We’ll hold off on POLITICS in this Blog Post because Martin Luther King Jr Day is coming and we’ll put it all together next week. It’s actually all very upsetting and depressing.

We went back to Las Vegas in December 2019, right after Thanksgiving and just before the holidays began. And we can say that we are very happy that the holidays are over! It’s snowing again in Ashland, Oregon today. We don’t like to travel during the holiday season for all the obvious reasons and the weather in Los Angeles in the winter is much more human friendly, so we usually stay local and celebrate with family and friends.

We still haven’t posted the Oregon Eclipse and Burning Man 2017 Blog Post(s) yet.
And so we apologize for the long delay… the Blogs are laid out and constructed but still remain unfinished. They will see the light of your computer monitors soon, really.

Tijuana, “the Gateway to Mexico” is the westernmost city on the US-Mexico border south of California. Officially founded on July 11, 1889, Tijuana is the largest city in Baja California State and on the Gold Coast of the Baja Peninsula, and is the 6th largest city in Mexico. In 2015, Tijuana had a population of 1640000. More than fifty million people cross the border between Tijuana and San Diego every year (~300000 people per day).

My Way
by Paul Anka
So now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more much more than this
I did it my way.
Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exception
I planned each chartered course
Each careful step alone the by way
And more much more than this
I did it my way.
Yes there were times I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I face it all and I stood tall
And did it my way.
I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my fill my share of loosing
And the now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that and my I say
Not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no not me
I did it my way!

“Aloha” A Hawaiian word used when saying Hello or Goodbye.

The real meaning of “Aloha” in Hawaiian is that of Love, Peace, and Compassion.
“Aloha” means living in harmony with other people and the land with mercy, sympathy, grace, kindness, and a mutual understanding of respect.

How about a nice strong cocktail? We have to admit that we are not a big drinker.
We have friends who are really big drinkers. Really big. Maybe too big.
(unfortunately we have too many friends of blessed memory who once drank a lot)
We have never been a big consumer of alcoholic beverages, unless you count those four years of college. We really only drink “socially” when we are with other people at a restaurant or bar, a party or an event where everyone is drinking.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY!
KNOW WHEN TO SAY WHEN. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!

Clara Peller asks “Where’s The Beef?” in 1984

Beef is the name for meat from cattle.
Beef can be harvested from bulls, cows, heifers or steers.

“Let’s Play Know Your Cuts of Meat!” – David Letterman

Beef muscle (MEAT) is cut into roasts, short ribs or steaks.
Cuts: filet mignon, sirloin steak, rump steak, rib steak, rib eye steak, hanger steak, etc.
Some cuts are processed (corned beef and beef jerky) and trimmings are ground, minced or used in sausages. Blood is used in some varieties of blood sausage.
Other parts: the oxtail, liver, tongue, tripe from the reticulum or rumen, glands (the pancreas and thymus are called sweetbreads), the heart, the brain, the kidneys and testicles (called calf friesprairie oysters or Rocky Mountain oysters in the U.S.) are eaten too. Some intestines are cooked and eaten, but more often they are cleaned and used as natural sausage casings. The bones are used for making beef stock and gelatin.

Beef is the third most consumed meat in the world, accounting for about 25% of meat production worldwide (after pork 38% and poultry 30%).

“Where’s The Beef?”

Beef is first divided into primal cuts during butchering.
Primal cuts are large pieces of meat initially separated from the animal’s carcass.
Steaks and other subdivisions are cut from these basic sections.

How did “Where’s The Beef?” become a part of the American vocabulary and an all-purpose phrase questioning the substance of an idea, event or product?

clara_peller_publicity_headshot
Clara Peller (August 4, 1902 – August 11, 1987) was a manicurist and American character actress. Born on August 4, 1902 in Russia, she came to the United States at the age of 5 with an uncle and lived in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of 81, Clara starred in the 1984 “Where’s The Beef?” advertising campaign for Wendy’s restaurants, created by the Dancer Fitzgerald Sample advertising agency.
clara-peller

At age 80, Clara was hired as a manicurist for a television commercial set in a Chicago barbershop. Impressed by her no-nonsense manners and unique voice, the agency signed her. She was hard of hearing and had emphysema, which limited her ability to speak long lines of dialogue, and she appeared in many TV commercials. She first attracted attention as a comical cleaning lady in an ad for the new Massachusetts State Lottery game “Megabucks” in the late 1970s and later became a national cultural phenomenon  in a series of commercials for the Wendy’s Restaurant chain.

First aired on January 10, 1984, the Wendy’s commercial “Fluffy Bun” portrayed a fictional competitor “Home of the Big Bun” where three elderly ladies are complaining about an enormous hamburger bun containing a tiny hamburger patty. Two of the women comment on the size of the bun and they are interrupted by Peller’s character, who looks around in vain  while making the outraged demand: “Where’s The Beef?”

“Where’s The Beef?” became a catchphrase (before viral video) across the United States.
The actress made the three-word phrase a cultural phenomenon, achieved Andy Warhol’s “15 minutes of fame” and became an instant star. Sequels to the spots featured her yelling her famous line in various scenes and her face and the slogan were merchandised on shirts, hats, buttons, mugs, glasses, bumper stickers, frisbees, games, a commemorative plate, and all sorts of other products. Nashville songwriter and DJ Coyote McCloud wrote and performed a hit song entitled “Where’s the Beef?” released as a promotional single for Wendy’s featuring Clara Peller.

wheres-the-beef

“Where’s The Beef?” – The Game!

Wendy’s sales jumped 31% to $945 million in 1985 worldwide. Wendy’s Senior VP of Communications Denny Lynch said at the time that “with Clara we accomplished as much in five weeks as we did in 14½ years.” Former Vice-President Walter Mondale also used the line in his bid for the Democratic nomination in the 1984 presidential campaign.

The campaign ended in 1985 when Clara did a commercial for Campbell’s Prego pasta sauce, where she declares “I found it! I really found it!” After the Prego commercial aired, Wendy’s management decided to terminate her contract. Clara’s response: “I’ve made them millions and they don’t appreciate me.” Following her termination and the conclusion of the “Where’s The Beef?” campaign, Wendy’s suffered a 2 year sales slump and consumer awareness of the Wendy’s brand did not recover for another five years!

clarapeller

NOTE: According to an A&E biography, “Where’s The Beef?” was actually an error made by Clara who was supposed to say “Where’s all the beef?” And another story says the line was shortened because of her emphysema.

Clara was paid scale for the first commercial and claimed she only made about $30,000 from the commercials, but Wendy’s claimed she was paid about $500,000 for her work. Clara also appeared in other commercials, did interviews and guest spots (including a cameo on “Saturday Night Live” in April 1984), made other appearances, and she had a small role in the feature film “Moving Violations.”

Clara Peller died in on August 11, 1987, one week after her 85th birthday.

Memorial Day Weekend 2016

Memorial Day Weekend 2016

US_Flag_Backlit

USA! The United States of America!

Memorial Day: A Day of Remembrance!
Originally it was called Decoration Day. A day when Americans went to cemeteries and placed flags or flowers on the graves of the war dead. It was a day to remember ancestors, family members, and loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice and died in service for the United States of America. Waterloo, New York, was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, but over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of the holiday. Decoration Day was created during the Civil War to honor the dead. It was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic: “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.”

Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years and many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of the day. At many cemeteries, the graves of American war dead are increasingly ignored or neglected while backyard barbecues and a three day weekend are now the only celebration of the holiday.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!
Memorial Day Weekend in Los Angeles is a “Maximum Enforcement” period by local law enforcement to combat drunk driving. On our way to NoHo we saw LAPD Metro cops on motorcycles already patrolling the San Fernando Valley. Once again we were the designated driver, so we didn’t drink any alcohol before dinner or at the restaurant, so our friend could enjoy his beers and stay safe in North Hollywood.

SATURDAY

Chore Day! Laundry and Spring Cleaning! We spent most of the day trying to clean and get organized. We are on a mission to get rid of the clutter and stuff we don’t need.

We finished and posted a new Blog about the “Slugfest in Hollywood” on Tuesday: the Dixie Hollywood Hotel, Dinner at Susan Finegar’s Mud Hen Tavern and The Cure at the Hollywood Bowl”.

And a pretty boring Saturday night at home…

Dinner: Enchilada Nachos!

Dinner: Enchilada Nachos! Used the leftover Mexican food from last night: cheese enchilada cut up with the rice and beans and then more cheese over tortilla chips with taco bell hot sauce. “Life is short, make it saucy!”

And we watched “The Intern” with Robert Deniro and Anne Hathaway on HBO. A cute film about a 70 year old retired business man (played by Deniro) who interns for a successful online women’s clothing company owned by a young, overworked woman with an adorable young child and a “stay at home” husband (played by Hathaway). The cast is rounded out by a crew of young, nerdy “Tech Bros” and Rene Russo as the company masseuse.

It’s really a romantic comedy without the romance between Deniro and Hathaway, adding Rene Russo as the hot, younger old person and love interest. It was a fun movie with a great cast, but the happy ending was kind of lacking in resolution and could have been much better! Deniro got to chew on the scenery and play a custom tailored part and that’s what he’s great at. Hathaway is a terrific actress, and this role mirrors her part in “The Devil Wears Prada” as a young and successful working woman conquering adversity.

We also did a little Periscope viewing too. We watched The Cure live from Washington and Steven Brody Stevens killing it and rockin’ comedy at the Improv on Melrose.

And then we worked on laying out this Blog until we got tired and fell asleep.

SUNDAY

We slept in and then made breakfast/brunch.

Sunday Breakfast – Bacon and Eggs!

Sunday Breakfast: Scrambled eggs with cheese & hot sauce, bacon, English muffins with peanut butter & raspberry jam, nectarine, orange juice and an iced espresso.

And we were going to do stuff today and then we turned on HBO and saw they were running a marathon of “The Pacific”, the under appreciated follow up to “Band of Brothers” in honor of Memorial Day. It’s a great period piece about World War II and the war against the Japanese. So, we didn’t watch all 10 hours, but we did watch…and worked.

Hot Dogs! Sunday afternoon with the dogs in the backyard:

We were invited to go to the movies, but passed because we didn’t want to see the film and we hate going to the theatre on weekends or holidays because there are just too many people, and all it really takes is one person with a cell phone to ruin the experience for me. So, we stayed at the home office and someone brought me dinner!

Sunday “To Go” Dinner delivered: Orange chicken, steamed rice, sautéed vegetables from The Cheesecake Factory and a Dr Pepper. Tasty “comfort” food makes me happy.

Sunday night “must see TV” on HBO: New episodes of “Game of Thrones”, “Silicon Valley” and a previously aired episode of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”

SPOILER ALERT!

“Hold the door!” We waited all week for this episode of Game of Thrones. Last week’s episode “The Door” was excellent. And sad. And emotionally involving. And as always, there are so many story lines running that each episode feels incomplete…
And so, with great anticipation we waited and watched this week’s episode.

Do you think Hodor will return as a wight?

NOTE: “Silicon Valley” is “genius” humor.
This week’s episode was pretty great. Oh the Bachmanity!

MONDAY – It’s Memorial Day!

Grapefruit, coffee, leftover cold orange chicken for breakfast and then back to bed…

The annual “Band of Brothers” marathon on HBO was interrupted by a LIVE televised Memorial Day Holiday High Speed Pursuit at noon!

Band_of_Brothers_poster

“Band of Brothers” is a 2001 American war drama based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1993 non-fiction book. It is based on the true World War Two story of the men of Easy Company from the US Army 101st Airborne division who fought in Europe during the war.

NOTE: We’ve seen “Band of Brothers” in it’s entirety a couple of times. So when a social media alert was broadcast about another LIVE high speed pursuit in Los Angeles, we switched over and began watching the car chase.

Memorial Day Holiday LIVE Televised High Speed Pursuit:

Memorial Day Holiday High Speed Pursuit in Southern California

The French Open was rained out so NBC stayed on the chase that started at about 10:30am… Stolen vehicle: a silver KIA Sorrento SUV with an “impaired” driver on surface streets in East Los Angeles. We picked up the pursuit at noon as the suspect got on the empty freeways and continued driving for almost 3 hours. NBC commentary was complete speculation and stupidity, so we switched over to ABC and then KCAL9 (our local CBS affiliate). Please just the facts, not ignorant newscaster’s uninformed opinions!

And Fox 11 had coverage too:

Memorial Day Holiday High Speed Pursuit in Southern California

At 1pm, KCAL 9 and FOX both cut off their news coverage and returned to regular programming, so we switched back to ABC and NBC because KTLA 5 News didn’t pick up the chase at all for their one o’clock broadcast. And just after 1pm he ran out of gas on the 405 near the Long Beach Freeway, smoked some more meth in the car and then surrendered without further incident to the California Highway Patrol.

Monday Lunchtime! A bacon, lettuce and cheese sandwich on challah bread; dill pickle, celery, carrots, blueberries, red grapes and pineapple juice.

Afternoon CHILLIN’ in the backyard and more episodes of “Band of Brothers” while getting some work done in the office was how we spent the rest of the day.

Monday Memorial Day Holiday Chillin’ on the Backyard Patio

We worked, we cleaned, we played with the dogs.

And then we got hungry and went to see what ingredients we had for dinner. We decided to make some pasta and did a little fancy cooking in the kitchen:

Dinner on Monday: Spaghetti with garlic alfredo sauce, grilled chicken, stir-fried broccoli & sautéed onions and a coke.

Where did the three day weekend go? Mostly boring. We hope you had a good one!

REMEMBER THE FALLEN! Some gave all so you could BBQ in peace.
Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Chipotlé Burrito Test!

Chipotlé Burrito Test!

Believe it or not, I’ve never had Chipotlé. There are so many good Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley that chain restaurant “fast-food” from Chipotlé was never a “go-to” option.

We had a Coupon (and it was about to expire on May 1) for a FREE Burrito, Burrito Bowl or Order of Tacos at any Chipotlé Mexican Grill. And there’s one that opened up relatively recently in Encino on Ventura Blvd and we’ve wanted to try it for awhile now.

NOTE: We’ve been hesitant to eat at Chipotlé because of the recent “food-borne” illness news reports centered on the restaurant chain, which is why we call this a test.

So, Wednesday evening at 7pm we stopped and picked up an order “TO GO” for dinner on our way to our friend’s place in North Hollywood.

13116308_1376647532361809_2417342961082104252_o

There’s metered street parking on Ventura Blvd (8am-8pm) but you can’t park on the street between 4-7pm because it’s an ANTI-GRIDLOCK ZONE during “rush hour”, so there’s drive-in underground parking (which we can’t tell you about because we parked on the street just after 7pm).

The restaurant was clean and bright with a big letter “A” health rating on the front window which was good. It wasn’t very busy and there wasn’t any wait to order, which is always of concern at fast service restaurants where the food sits and waits for a customer.

The young guy behind the register said hello from across the empty front area as we entered. The young woman who prepared the order was very business-like and efficient, but not very friendly (and she shorted us on the steak…yes we noticed that sneaky move!) as she quickly made our Burrito Bowl.

13064764_1376647539028475_2550342718103513166_o

On The Menu: A Burrito Bowl with 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, 1/2 black beans, 1/2 pinto beans, 1/2 brown rice, 1/2 white rice, hot sauce, guacamole, lettuce and a large flour tortilla

NOTE: We read a food article about “How to get the best value at Chipotlé” which said that if you order the Burrito Bowl with 1/2 of each ingredient, you will get more food than if you order a Burrito or a Burrito Bowl with single ingredients. And of course you have to get the guacamole (on the side) for a “small additional charge”.

We exchanged the food for the coupon and took it “TO GO” We drove over to our friend’s place and ate after we arrived, so the food traveled in the car for about 15 minutes. We removed the lettuce from the bowl and heated the meat, rice and beans in the microwave for a minute to get it hot again. We emptied the contents of the bowl onto the tortilla, added the guacamole, took a few pics, rolled it up into a very large burrito and promptly ate the whole thing (except the lettuce, which we didn’t eat at all) and it was okay. Not great, but we were very hungry so it was good. And the price was right, it was FREE.

13064771_1376647535695142_6700720246015952416_o

“Rub-A-Dub-Dub Thanks For The Grub!”

We would eat there again, but it still wouldn’t be a first choice for “fast casual” Mexican food, It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great. It was okay and it was an okay value. There was a lot of food in that large burrito and we don’t feel sick the next day.

We like to cook fresh Mexican at home. We enjoy Cuban food from Versailles and casual Mexican food from El Torito and Poquito Mas. And every once in awhile we’ll eat at Taco Bell or Del Taco, although that doesn’t really count as Mexican or real food.

We like to eat at Mucho Mas in NoHo. And we also like to call, order and pick up a very large and tasty Chicken Burrito with rice and beans “Gringo Style” (with melted cheese and red sauce on top) from Las Fuentes Mexican Restaurant on Vanowen just east of Reseda Blvd in Reseda for about the same price as Chipotlé:

“No Shoes, No Shirt, No Dice!”

The place is a CLASSIC “gringo style” Mexican joint, with wagon wheel chandeliers and bunch of grapes lighting fixtures in addition to the neon exterior signage. Brick, plaster, wrought iron, wood and ceramic shingles with velvet paintings and “kitchy” rustic “South of the border” type decor combine to make you feel as if you’re actually in Mexico!

There’s a small bar with a dining area, an outdoor patio and an “L” shaped dining room with comfortable booths and wooden tables. The menu is traditional “gringo style” Mexican food with additional house specialties (there’s a menu page pic below).

Start with a shot of tequila or a margarita!

You get a lot of food for $13 and the drinks are very reasonably priced! They have beer, wine, hard alcohol and cocktails on the menu and nice food and drink specials during the week and at off hours.

We’ve been coming here regularly for a while now. The food is good, the prices are very reasonable, the service is pretty good, parking is free (there’s a small parking lot and plenty of street parking), it’s not too far from my friend’s house and we never have to wait for a table. So, if you’re in NoHo and hungry and want some good “gringo style” Mexican food, I would definitely recommend trying Mucho Mas!

Taco Tuesday! Dinner at El Torito Mexican Restaurant in Sherman Oaks

Taco Tuesday! Mexican food at El Torito in Sherman Oaks.

Thinking about chips and salsa! We hit up the El Torito Mexican Restaurant at Ventura blvd and Van Nuys blvd. There’s a parking lot that’s always full, valet parking and (TIP) street parking available. If you get lucky, you’ll find a parking space in the lot. If you’re smart you’ll find street parking at a meter on Ventura blvd, Moorpark street or Van Nuys blvd.

Dinner at El Torito Mexican Restaurant in Sherman Oaks

The Bar is usually busy, and on Tuesdays it is really crowded because of the Taco Tuesday $1.99 Taco special (It used to be $1.00) and the Taco Bar spread which is only available in the Bar area. It’s also very loud with music and conversation, so we decided on the regular menu and a comfortable booth in a quiet corner of the center dining room.

At the Bar at El Torito in Sherman Oaks

The Bar is pretty fun if you can find a seat. They have beer, wine and spirits. Usually there’s a tequila drink (margarita) on special or it’s “happy hour” and there’s always a game on the televisions and loud music playing.

Besides the Taco special and Taco Bar Buffet, they have a Bar Menu with appetizers and small plates and you can order off the regular menu in the Bar area as well.

Taco Tuesday! The Taco Bar Buffet at El Torito in Sherman Oaks

I haven’t tried the lunch buffet or Saturday/Sunday brunch in a long time, but it’s a pretty good value and a they have a lot of different choices available. A Mexican food buffet is always pretty good! Tacos, burrito makings, fajitas, enchiladas, tamales, rice, beans, desserts, fruit, salads, soups, salsas and more; and then breakfast foods, menudo, juices and pastries for the weekend Brunch buffets.

The chips are made fresh and served warm with roasted pepper salsa. They’ll make fresh guacamole at your table if you order it. They have a good selection of appetizers, entrees and ala carte items. Not so much on dessert, only deep fried ice cream, flan and a tres leches cake. Free refills on soda and most other beverages and more chips and salsa too.

Happy Birthday! Mexican Birthday Song at El Torito Restaurant!

It wasn’t my birthday, but the waitstaff came over and sang to the table next to ours so I got a nice picture. The service was excellent! I didn’t have to look around for our waiter because he was checking in with us regularly. When I finished the coke, he was right there asking “would you like a refill?”. Every request was handle promptly and the Manager even came by to ask how everything was.

The prices are reasonable. The Buffets and Specials are a pretty good value if you’re hungry and want to eat a lot of food. Drinks are also pretty reasonable and some of the drink specials are excellent! You get a lot of food and we even got a AAA discount on the check!

It was a very good meal and a pleasant dining experience. Good food and lot of it. The service was excellent and it wasn’t too expensive. A Very Happy Taco Tuesday!
