GRATEFUL DEAD! 50 YEARS!

GRATEFUL DEAD! 50 YEARS! “What a long, strange trip it’s been!”

GRATEFUL DEAD * 50 YEARS!

GRATEFUL DEAD * 50 YEARS!

50 years ago, Dec 4, 1965: Jerry, Bob, Phil, Bill & Pigpen first played music as the Grateful Dead, the house band for Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster’s Acid Test in San Jose, California!

Can You Pass the Acid Test? Nov 27, 1965 in Santa Cruz, CA

Can You Pass the Acid Test? Nov 27, 1965 at Ken Babbs’ Chicken Farm

“This is a One-of-A-Kind Poster, hand drawn, and not mass distributed for the event. It is likely the only one made, or at least, the only one that survived. At this point in the early acid test days, Posters and handbills were not being used to advertise events. Instead, small Posters were placed up in local coffee shops and hangouts around town, of which there were several up and down the bay, but the most prominent of these was a little place called the Catalyst. At the time, it was a lively coffee shop, but now it has moved up the street and small bands play there, as it has been turned into a club. This particular item was taken down by someone from the Catalyst Coffee Shop at the time. I spoke to Lee Quarnstrom, who worked at the Hip Pocket Bookstore in ’65, and lived at the Spread, and attended the event. Lee stated something extremely revealing to me in a private conversation when I visited with him. Lee stated, “The Hip Pocket Bookstore and the Catalyst were connected together. A person could walk from one to the other without ever going outside or leaving the building.” This statement reveals a lot. What it means is that this Poster could be the main advertising and only advertising for the first Acid Test event, besides the sign Norman Hartweg tacked onto the board that belonged to Babbs. Or maybe this was the sign? Either way, in my opinion, this is the most important piece of Acid Test history to survive. Truly Miraculous!”

“Never Trust a Prankster!”

The next acid test took place fifty years ago in the wee hours of Dec. 4, 1965 at Big Nig’s house, a rambling old Edwardian near downtown San Jose, after the Rolling Stones had played a show at the San Jose Civic Auditorium, a 3000 seat venue built in 1934, with the Dead and Kesey’s gang in attendance. After the Stones’ concert, the Pranksters passed out Crayon-lettered handbills for a house party. Their cryptic message was a street address and the words: “Can YOU Pass the Acid Test?” About 300 to 400 people showed up and the Grateful Dead played until the police broke up the party.

“NO LEFT TURN UNSTONED!”

It’s National Scotch Day! Have a drink.

Today is National Scotch Day! Have a drink.

National Scotch Day! (copyright 2014 JoshWillTravel)

National Scotch Day! (copyright 2014 JoshWillTravel)

From Wikipedia: Scotch whiskey, often simply called Scotch, is malt whiskey or grain whiskey made in Scotland. Scotch whiskey must be made in a manner specified by law.

All Scotch whiskey was originally made from malted barley. Commercial distilleries began introducing whiskey made from wheat and rye in the late 18th century. Scotch whiskey is divided into five distinct categories: single malt Scotch whiskey, single grain Scotch whiskey, blended malt Scotch whiskey (formerly called “vatted malt” or “pure malt”), blended grain Scotch whiskey, and blended Scotch whiskey.

All Scotch whiskey must be aged in oak barrels for at least three years and one day. Any age statement on a bottle of Scotch whiskey, expressed in numerical form, must reflect the age of the youngest whisky used to produce that product. A whiskey with an age statement is known as guaranteed-age whiskey.

As of 23 November 2009, the Scotch Whiskey Regulations 2009 (SWR) define and regulate the production, labelling, packaging as well as the advertising of Scotch whiskey in the United Kingdom. They replace previous regulations that focused solely on production. International trade agreements have the effect of making some provisions of the SWR apply in various other countries as well as in the UK. The SWR define “Scotch whiskey” as whiskey that is:

  • Produced at a distillery in Scotland from water and malted barley (to which only whole grains of other cereals may be added) all of which have been:
    • Processed at that distillery into a mash
    • Converted at that distillery to a fermentable substrate only by endogenous enzyme systems
    • Fermented at that distillery only by adding yeast
    • Distilled at an alcoholic strength by volume of less than 94.8% (190 US proof)
  • Wholly matured in an excise warehouse in Scotland in oak casks of a capacity not exceeding 700 litres (185 US gal; 154 imp gal) for at least three years
  • Retaining the colour, aroma, and taste of the raw materials used in, and the method of, its production and maturation
  • Containing no added substances, other than water and plain (E150A) caramel colouring
  • Comprising a minimum alcoholic strength by volume of 40% (80 US proof)

8 ounces unsalted butter, melted
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

I Love You Alice B. Toklas with Peter Sellers

“I Love You Alice B. Toklas” with Peter Sellers

OPTIONAL SUBSTITUTION TO MAKE ALICE B. TOKLAS BROWNIES:

Cannabutter

Recipe makes 1 pound

Ingredients:

1 pound of unsalted butter
1 ounce of cannabis – good to excellent grade is recommended

large saucepan

cheesecloth
spoon
Tupperware container with a lid
rubber band that will fit around the Tupperware

Instructions:

• Pour 2 inches of water into the saucepan and boil.

• Once boiling, add the butter into the saucepan, being careful that the butter does not burn. Once melted, turn the heat to low.

• Stir the cannabis into the butter, and simmer on low heat. Let simmer for at least 3 hours. The longer the simmer, the higher the potency. Make sure to stir often.
Strap 2 sheets of cheesecloth overtop the Tupperware bowl using the rubber band.

• Slowly pour the cannabis butter through the cheesecloth and into the Tupperware.

• Remove the cheesecloth, and ring-out any extra butter stuck in the cloth into the Tupperware.

Put the lid on the Tupperware and put it in the fridge until the water and butter separate. Carefully pour out the water—the remaining block is cannabutter.

Some Music Videos I Worked On:

FLASHBACK FRIDAY!

Let’s tale a little trip down memory lane…if I can remember.

mtvmoon

Music! Video! Combine the two and you have MTV when it was Music Television.

I used to work Freelance Production for film, television, video, commercials, theater and live events. Here are some of the Music Videos I worked on in the early 90s:

RIGHT CLICK ON LINK AND OPEN IN NEW WINDOW TO VIEW VIDEO

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – “Why Do I Keep F*ckin’ Up?”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKaDCP-wKr8

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – “Mansion On The Hill”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1WpgTzf8nk

Oil Factory Inc. Directed by Billy Poveda and Bernard Shakey Set PA, Runner, Driver, Grip and Art Department Shot both videos in a week at the Troubadour, a house on West Adams and in, around and under Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles.

Day 1: We set up at the Troubadour for the live performance shots. We had a small hiccup in production when Neil showed up. Billy the director thought that Neil would just lip-sync to audio playback but Neil wanted to perform it live, so we had to get a big P.A. system ASAP because Neil also wanted it LOUD. Once the speakers arrived, they played both songs live a bunch of times and shot a ton of film. It was pretty cool because Neil wanted to play to an audience, so I got to be as close as the cameraman is in the video to the live performance. And you have to hand to Crazy Horse (Ralphie, Poncho and Billy) because they rock hard and they were great guys to hang with! I also got to meet Larry, Neil’s Guitar Tech (who plays banjo in the “Heart of Gold” concert video directed by Jonathan Demme).

Days 2, 3 and 4: We shot in, around and under Queen of Angel’s Hospital. The hospital and chapel scenes were shot there. The gas station scenes (and a funeral procession that was cut) were shot around the neighborhood. Neil’s wife Pegi is the beautiful woman sitting with him in the limosine. And the steam tunnel shots were shot under the hospital and we had to get some serious air conditioning units because the lights and crew added to the already high temperature underground.

On Day 4 we went to prep the house for the next day. Day 5: We shot at a rundown house on West Adams hill. We had to clean it before we could dress it for shooting. I had to clean 10 years of dirt and grime off every windowpane in the house and the glass doors that Neil enters through. I couldn’t say, “I don’t do windows”. And then they wanted us to cover them with gauze! The shoot went late and the strike went into early morning before we wrapped. One of the most surreal moments of my life was sitting with Neil Young in his dressing room as his trainer worked him out and listening to him curse MTV for censoring his work. Later he would win an MTV Award for best video for his anti-sponsorship song “This Note’s For You!” Bernard Shakey is Neil Young, and he had a big hand in directing and editing the project. I think the video came out pretty good. But you decide for yourself.

(or any other large animals that might kill me and eat me, thank you very much) They had the tiger doped up and overfed, but at one point it decided it wanted to go “over there” and so the 800 pound tiger pulled it’s handler across the stage. Beautiful animal and the footage was cool, but I’ve always been against the exploitation of wild animals. Today they’d probably just CGI it in. “Never get out of the boat….a f*ckin’ tiger man!”
