Jerusalem Day is May 10th!
Celebrate the “Israeli national holiday commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over the Old City in the aftermath of the June 1967 Six-Day War.” (the holiday actually begins on the evening of May 9th)

6:45am: Sunday Sunday Sunday….. we didn’t sleep.  Insomnia.
We feel sh*tty this morning. We tried to sleep a bunch of times,
but we couldn’t get comfortable, and we couldn’t fall asleep.
Now it’s time to feed the dogs and do the morning stuff.

183621497_10225140098913408_7709998714562238998_n

7:30am: We took the dogs outside. We fed the dogs.
We took the dogs outside again. We got the newspapers.
We drank a little cran-raspberry juice.
No coffee yet, because we still feel sh*tty.
And we’re back in the Home Office with the dogs now.

Take Time to Smell The Roses! (copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

11:50am: We went to bed and slept for a couple hours and now we feel better.
We took the dogs outside. We made an iced espresso. We surfed the interweb.
We made our Mother’s Day phone calls and now we have the long Sunday ahead.
And it’s a beautiful day outside today. Maybe we’ll swimming in the cement pond:
pool

11:15pm: Recapping Sunday. We didn’t do anything important.
We didn’t even Blog today. But we did call our Mom again.
We took a nap. We took the dogs outside.
We slept some more, because we didn’t sleep last night.
We watched “Bar Rescue” all day on TV. (co-created by one of our ex-clients)
We surfed the interweb and watched youtube vids.
We took the dogs outside. The dogs got fed. We took the dogs outside.
We ate two toasted mini-bagels with cream cheese and a small dill pickle.
We fell asleep. We woke up and took the dogs outside.
Now were all chilling’ in the Home Office again.
And we need to eat something, like dinner. Leftovers we don’t want to waste?

On The Menu: Leftover Thai food. 2 BBQ spareribs and some twice fried rice.

On this day 1503, Christopher Columbus ‘discovered’ the Cayman Islands

On this day in 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific connected at Promontory Summit in Utah, and the Transcontinental Railroad was finished using the famous “Golden Spike”.

On this day in 1924, J. Edgar Hoover was appointed the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Washington DC.

7:45am: And it’s Monday again.
We woke up, we took the dogs outside, we fed the dogs, we took the dogs outside.
We got the newspapers. We drank a cup of espresso and ate two toasted croissants.

10:10am: We drank another cup of espresso and took the dogs outside again.
The housekeeper just arrived and she is going to clean. So we are going to hide.
We are chillin’ in the Home Office with the dogs now. Happy Monday.

On this day in 1954, Bill Haley and The Comets released
“Rock Around The Clock” (the theme from “Happy Days”) – A VERY BIG HIT IN 1955!
Here they are appearing on the “Ed Sullivan Show” on August 7, 1955:

One, two, three o’clock, four o’clock, rock
Five, six, seven o’clock, eight o’clock, rock
Nine, ten, eleven o’clock, twelve o’clock, rock
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
Put your glad rags on and join me, hon
We’ll have some fun when the clock strikes one
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
When the clock strikes two, three and four
If the band slows down we’ll yell for more
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
When the chimes ring five, six and seven
We’ll be right in seventh heaven
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
When it’s eight, nine, ten, eleven too
I’ll be goin’ strong and so will you
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
When the clock strikes twelve, we’ll cool off then
Start a rockin’ round the clock again
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
(written by Max C. Freedman and James E. Myers)

William John Clifton Haley, Jr. (aka the “Father of Rock and Roll”)
born July 6, 1925, Highland Park, Michigan, US
died February 9, 1981, Harlingen, Texas

Other songs by Bill Haley:
“See You Later, Alligator”, “Shake, Rattle and Roll”,
“Rocket 88”, “Skinny Minnie”, and “Razzle Dazzle”

Also on this day in 1910, Halley’s Comet made its closest approach to Earth!

5:00pm: Hey it’s FIVE O’CLOCK. We waited for the housekeeper to leave.
We took the dogs outside and we spent the afternoon chillin’.  One more week.
We took the dogs outside again. And the day went by relatively quick.
So, we just took the dogs outside again and now we’re back in the Home Office.
We haven’t eaten anything today, except for those croissants,
and we prepped some food and it’s waiting in kitchen. So let’s eat!

5:25pm: We ate. Meatless Monday. Okay.
On The Menu: Two toasted cheese sandwiches on sourdough.
And an iced espresso to drink. Drink Coffee. Drink Water. Eat Cheese.
184895988_4741346465891882_1824455710944196451_n

8:30pm: We got woken up from our nap by our cel phone…. F*CK.
We fell asleep after we fed the dogs. We took them outside before and after.
And then we crashed out for almost an hour an half with the dogs. F*ck.
So we’re almost awake again now.

11:05pm: Same news all day long. Blah blah Blah blah Blah.
We took the dogs outside again. We thought about food.
We didn’t eat. We made an iced mocha. Iced mocha lot.
And we took the dogs outside again. It’s a nice cool night in the SFV.
Maybe tomorrow we’ll go out and do some errands.

edddd
Guess what happened today? HAHAHAHAHA.
We got the mail, and we got some mail from the CA EDD.
We couldn’t get through to EDD on the telephone, so we emailed our contact at our Assemblyman’s office who helped us with our Claim problem (see our previous Blog Posts about Filing for California Unemployment, the Employment Development Department FAILS, and the criminal activity by Bank of America and their Executives). JUST TOTAL FRAUD.
But the Assemblyman’s staffer has a direct contact at EDD and helped us again!
We needed to Backdate our Claim, because we were originally late to file….
and today we received the claim forms for the weeks that needed claiming!
In fact DUPLICATE CLAIM FORMS! And they were weekly, instead of bi-weekly,
so we got FOURTEEN envelopes from EDD today,
with 14 claim forms, 14 cover letters, and 14 return envelopes.
184210541_4741347979225064_1858232460840437283_n
AND THEN WE CERTIFIED ONLINE!!!!! Paperless.
Because the payments get mailed faster.
MORE WASTE. MORE BAD MANAGEMENT! AND JUST PAR FOR THE COURSE.
WE DON’T HAVE THE FUNDS ADDED ELECTRONICALLY
TO THE BofA BANK CARD BECAUSE OF BofA AND OTHER FRAUD!

BIG THANKS TO CA ASSEMBLYMAN JESSE GABRIEL FOR ACTUALLY HELPING HIS CONSTITUENTS! BIG THANKS TO OUR CONTACT IN HIS OFFICE FOR SAVING US!

DO NOT TRAVEL! STAY THE FUCK HOME AND STAY HEALTHY!

NOTE: The CDC made a significant change to their COVID-19 guidelines last week.
Anyone infected with COVID-19 can spread it, even if they DO NOT have symptoms.
COVID-19 is aerosolized and can be transmitted at distances greater than six feet!

COVID-19 IS SPREAD IN THREE MAIN WAYS:

  1. Breathing in air when close to an infected person who is exhaling small droplets and particles that contain the virus. Inhalation of air carrying very small fine droplets and aerosol particles that contain infectious virus. Risk of transmission is greatest within three to six feet of an infectious source, but the virus is aerosolized and can be transmitted at distances greater than six feet (and in any poorly ventilated or enclosed space).
  2. Having these small droplets and particles that contain virus land on the eyes, nose, or mouth, especially through splashes and sprays like a cough or sneeze. Deposition of virus carried in exhaled droplets and particles onto exposed mucous membranes (“splashes and sprays”, such as being coughed on). Risk of transmission is greatest close to an infectious source where these exhaled droplets and particles are concentrated.
  3. Touching eyes, nose, or mouth with contaminated hands that have the virus on them. Touching mucous membranes with hands soiled by exhaled respiratory fluids containing virus or from touching inanimate surfaces contaminated with virus.

Cases of reinfection with COVID-19 have been reported, but are rare.
And COVID-19 can spread from people to animals in some situations.
Pet cats and dogs can become infected after close contact with infected people.

And the FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine for children 12-15 years old today.
Now we wait for the CDC to agree and say okay. Get them all vaccinated!

HAPPY YEAR OF THE YIN SILVER METAL OX!

The first day is for welcoming the deities of the heavens and earth.
It is tradition to light fireworks and firecrackers, burn bamboo sticks
and make as much noise as possible to chase off evil spirits.

The first day is also a time to honor family elders and visit the oldest and most senior members of the extended families (parents, grandparents and great-grandparents).

The Chinese (LUNAR) New Year Festival runs for 15 days,
The New Year Lantern Festival on February 26th is the final day of the festival.

People born in the Year of the Ox are faithful and trustworthy.
They have leadership qualities and a tendency to be stubborn and judgmental.
They also stick to their routines and they are good workers.
They are cautious, and that helps them to avoid misfortune.

Asian American Art Museum in San Francisco

The San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival and Parade is the oldest and largest celebration outside of Asia, and the largest Asian cultural event in North America. Over 100 groups participate in the annual Chinese New Year Parade held since 1958. It is attended by ~500,000 people and watched by another 3 million television viewers.

“For over 5,000 years the Chinese have celebrated the awakening of spring with Lunar New Year festivities. In the 1860’s the Chinese in San Francisco started the Chinese New Year Parade as a way to educate their community about Chinese cultural customs. Today, San Francisco’s Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Festival and Parade – a two week celebration including a Flower Fair, Community Fair, Jamboree, Run, and the Miss Chinatown USA Pageant and Ball – is the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside of Asia.
A San Francisco tradition since just after the Gold Rush, the Parade continues to delight and entertain the over one million people that come to watch it on the street and hundreds of thousands more who watch the live broadcast…
Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, exploding firecrackers , and of course, the newly crowned Miss Chinatown U.S.A. and her court. A crowd favorite is the spectacular 268′ Golden Dragon (“Gum Lung”). It takes a team of over 100 men and women from the martial arts group, White Crane to carry this dragon throughout the streets of San Francisco.”

UPDATE: The San Francisco 2021 Chinese New Year Parade has been CANCELLED due to COVID-19 and concerns over large public gatherings. Instead a Parade Broadcast Special will air on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at 6 pm PST on KTVU. and a there will only be a few small live public events. Info: @ChineseParade

“The Dragon can ride mist and float on clouds in the sky, chase the storm and churn the waves in the sea, and summon wind and call for rain on the earth. More importantly, the Dragon symbolized the imperial power in the slave and feudal societies of China, and its image was exclusively used by the emperor.”

People hang fai chun (red and gold paper signs with significant Chinese characters) on their doors to create a festive atmosphere. The phrases generally signify good luck and prosperity. Customarily, fai chun are written by hand, but for convenience, printed versions are mass-produced nowadays. According to ancient Chinese superstition, lighting fires and using knives is considered bad luck on New Year’s Day, so all food is usually cooked beforehand. It is also considered bad luck to use a broom during the New Year’s celebration.

Time for some HOMECOOKING! Or at least pictures of food cooked at our home.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert! We are grateful to be able to dine out and bring food in when we want. We are even more thankful that we have access to and can afford such wonderful food, when so many people in the world are hungry.

oliver

“Please Sir, I want some more.”

“Food, Glorious Food” is a song from the musical “Oliver!” The musical adaption of the Charles Dickens novel “The Adventures of Oliver Twist” the story of a young orphan who runs away to London in search of a better life.

Take just a moment to appreciate the food you eat. Be thankful you aren’t starving.

Enjoy these pictures of some of the good food we have prepared and eaten this summer:

Dinner Party at Cafe Bizou in Sherman Oaks

Dinner Party at Cafe Bizou in Sherman Oaks

A rainy Wednesday night and it was someone’s birthday! (not mine)

Dinner Party at Cafe Bizou in Sherman Oaks

We were going to have Indian food and a party at the house, but I suggested Dinner at Cafe Bizou instead! We made a reservation last week for a party of nine at 6:30pm. When we arrived the table was ready and waiting. Of course, we didn’t arrive all at once…

They have convenient Valet Parking on Ventura Blvd and there’s also parking in the rear. It’s also possible to find street parking because they’re not in the middle of restaurant row and I’ve parked in the bank lot across the street after hours on occasion.

The first thing you’ll notice when you enter is that it’s in a house that’s been remodeled as a restaurant. There’s a nice bar but the bar area is small, also functions as the waiting area, and the path of service runs through the bar to the dining room. The large dining room is divided into two spaces and each has a difference ambiance, but also the same.

They also have a “patio area” in front, which is enclosed, covered and heated at night. It’s a very nice place for an intimate and/or romantic dinner.

The food is great. The food is reasonably priced. They have a good selection of wine at a fair market price and a very reasonable corkage fee if you want to bring your own bottle(s).

We really like Cafe Bizou! It’s a very comfortable environment and the dress code is casual to dressy without comment. Diners in jeans, shorts and t-shirts sitting next to executives in coats and ties is perhaps too common an occurrence, but the restaurant really all about the great food and pleasant dining experience.

The service is excellent! The wait staff and busboys are constantly in motion, well trained and pretty attentive to the tables and guests’ needs. Refills and requests are handled promptly and the courses are timed out for dining at a relaxed pace.

Again, it’s very reasonably priced for fine dining and they have a nice selection of food! (Check out the menu above)

They are open for Lunch, Brunch and Dinner.
Reservations in advance are recommended because “you never know”.

We’ve been here before, and it’s always good fresh food. It wasn’t busy when we arrived, but by the time we finished it was. We enjoyed our dinner and I left the restaurant happy.

I’m going to post a complaint about the service tonight: We sat at a table, not at the sushi bar, and halfway through the meal our server told us she was going on break without really having someone pickup our table. We had to flag down other restaurant staff to get drink refills, tempura sauce and the check. And we still left her a nice tip.

UPDATED Friday, January 15, 2017:
Good Shabbos y’all! So, the puppies had their “lady parts” surgery on Tuesday and we’ve been babysitting them during the recovery. One of the pups had a bad reaction and is kinda freaked out, so we’ve been really stressed trying to keep her calm and not catatonic…

Puppies Resting Comfortably After “Lady Parts” Surgery

Well, we had luke warm Indian food last night and didn’t really eat anything today, so we went out a little before 11pm to Cho Cho San, the sushi place down the street that’s open until midnight. They told me I had to get my order in by 11:10, so I did and then I ate at the sushi bar, paid and came home. The pups are resting comfortably and I’m full and happy.

On the menu: Shrimp&vegetable tempura, Firefly roll (spicy tuna inside, albacore on top with ancho paper and chili oil), Baked Scallop California roll with eel sauce, a large hot sake and an iced green tea. Happy weekend!

Tokyo Sushi – Dinner in San Jose, California

Tokyo Sushi – Dinner in San Jose, California

Road trippin’ back down to Los Angeles, I arrived in San Jose at dinner time. My friends were still at the graduation ceremony, so I found a shopping plaza with many kinds of asian cuisine restaurants and went looking for food.

Tokyo Sushi in San Jose, California

Tokyo Sushi in San Jose, California

There was Pho, Hot Pots, Hot Wings, Chinese, Thai, and “Tokyo Sushi”. I settled on sushi, and sat at the sushi bar. I ordered a three item Bento Box dinner with teriyaki chicken, tempura mix (shrimp & vegetables), and a California roll. I also added a spicy tuna cut roll, and 2 orders of nigiri sushi (salmon and albacore). The dinner included miso soup, green salad, rice, a pot sticker and fruit. They brought me teriyaki salmon by mistake, so I let them take it back, and they brought me chicken.

The Golden State Warriors were playing basketball and the game was televised, so the restaurant was almost empty. I was alone at the sushi bar for the entire time I was there. The food was good, if not great and I really enjoyed the tempura. The damage was only $40 (with tip included) and I took most of the chicken teriyaki and cut rolls with me and shared the food with my friends at the graduation party later.

Sunday Brunch at the LUXE Hotel On Sunset – On Sunset Restaurant

Big Thanks to the LUXE Hotel On Sunset, the On Sunset Restaurant and LWH Hotels for the wonderful brunch! I was lucky and won brunch for 2 at the Tokyo Cerulean Hotel Reception at the LUXE On Rodeo (see past blogs, it was a great event!). I had to wait until after football season for a free Sunday, so today we went to collect my win and try their well reviewed Brunch.

I love this hotel. It’s a beautiful property! You can take the full photographic tour in my other blogs, there are a couple of links at the bottom of this page. This blog is just about the brunch and the delicious food and drink that we enjoyed today.

I checked in and was given a drink ticket which I quickly exchanged for a Moonlight Madness (Apple Pie “Moonshine” corn liquor, vodka, ginger ale, granny smith apple garnish) served in a small mason jar.  There were tray passed appetizers: Olive, sundried tomato, basil and mozzarella skewers; Buffalo-ranch cocktail shrimp with toothpicks; and marinated and grilled meatballs with toothpicks which were delicious.

There was a pretty good turnout, everybody was very social, and I met lots of new people.  It’s also great to put a face to the name on those emails you’ve been getting….

I want to come back and try a bunch of things on the menu.  Thumbs up for Spoonful!
