Route 66 originally began on Jackson Boulevard at Michigan Avenue in Chicago. (1926)
In 1933, the beginning (and ending) was moved east onto reclaimed land for the Chicago World Fair to Jackson Boulevard and Lake Shore Drive.
In 1955, Jackson Boulevard became a one way street west of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street became westbound US-66. However, the start of US-66 remained on Jackson Boulevard at Lake Shore Drive on Lake Michigan.

Adams Street at Michigan Avenue is currently marked as the starting point (but Route 66 never started there) and the intersection of Jackson Blvd and Michigan Avenue is marked as the end in Chicago.

Route 66 originally ended at 7th and Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles (1926). Now, Route 66 ends at Lincoln Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard in Santa Monica, California.

The “TOURIST ENDING” is the Will Rogers Plaque in the Palisades Park at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard and the official  “End of the Trail” sign (placed in 2009) at the Santa Monica Pier (opened in 1909).

In 1984, the final stretch of US Highway 66 in Arizona was decommissioned after the completion of I-40 north of Williams.  The highway was decertified by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation the following year in 1985 and US-66 was officially removed from the map.

The VW Bus was only the second product made by Volkswagen (the first was the Beetle). In 1972, the VW Beetle passed the Ford Model T and became the world’s best-selling car, with over 15 million automobiles produced.

In 1933, Hitler became Chancellor of Nazi Germany. He wanted new roads (the Autobahn) and an inexpensive, fuel-efficient, mass-produced automobile for the people. Ferdinand Porsche, an Austrian engineer, was commissioned to design an affordable small car. In 1938, work began on the Volkswagen factory, located in present-day Wolfsburg, Germany, but full-scale production didn’t begin until after World War II.

Before World War II, it wasn’t called a Volkswagen Beetle but instead was named the KDF Wagen, a reference to the Hitler Youth motto “Kraft durch Freude” or “Strength through Joy.”

Josef Ganz, a German-Jewish engineer developed and patented many concepts for the VW Beetle and his name was removed on purpose by the Nazis. Ganz faced lawsuits over his patents, and a halt to his benefits from his previous employers Mercedes-Benz, Adler and BMW. He lost his position as editor-in-chief of “Motor-Kritik” and the Gestapo arrested him for alleged blackmail of the industry. He was threatened with assassination, forced into exile and forgotten. He died from a heart attack, unmarried and childless, at age 59 in Australia in 1967.

Porsche’s Concept: “A lightweight, inexpensive, streamlined car with independent suspension and swing axles in the rear of the car” – helping navigate “rough roads,”

Allied bombing destroyed most of the VW plant, which produced military vehicles for the Nazis during WWII. After their defeat, the British Government decided the plant would be a benefit for West Germany if it resumed manufacturing the Beetle.

Janis Joplin’s Porsche 356c Cabriolet in the Lobby of the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live

Janis Joplin purchased a used 1964 Porsche 356c Cabriolet for $3500 from Beverly Hills car dealer Estes-Zipper in 1968. She paid Dave Richards, one of her roadies, $500 to give the Porsche a psychedelic face lift. Completed in one month and titled “The History of the Universe.” The car and its paint job (a base coat of Candy Apple Red with portraits of Big Brother and the Holding Company, her astrological sign Capricorn, “The Eye of God” design on the hood, butterflies, jellyfish and a Northern California scene on the side doors) became one of the most recognizable vehicles in San Francisco.

The Porsche was stolen in 1969 and partially repainted before being found.  When the stolen car was recovered, the paint job was restored because they were able to remove the new paint from the clearcoat with little damage to the original artwork underneath.

Janis Lyn Joplin aka “Pearl” RIP (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970)

After Janis’ death in 1970, the car was used by her manager Albert Grossman. And then in 1973 ownership of the car went to her siblings, Michael and Laura Joplin in Ohio, who shared it for about 30 years. Michael rebuilt the original engine and returned the car to the original dolphin gray color (although some say it was originally oyster white). Working from photographs, artists Jana Mitchell and Amber Owen, restored Dave’s original artwork in 1990 and the 4-speed manual transmission was rebuilt and restored. The family loaned the Porsche to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Janis was inducted in 1995 and it was exhibited in museums until 2015. We saw it and took the above photograph in the Lobby of the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live in Los Angeles in 2013 (see our previous Blog).

NOTE: Dec. 10, 2015 – A 1964 Porsche 356 that once belonged to the rock singer Janis Joplin sold at auction for $1.76 million (the highest price ever paid for any Porsche 356 at auction). The car had been expected to sell for between $400,000 and $600,000. The sale price includes a 10% commission for Sotheby’s auction house. According to the family, the proceeds from the auction will be used to support social programs in Janis’s memory.

Sotheby’s did not say who bought Janis’ car and the buyer has not come forward.

Janis’ Porsche at the “Driven by Disruption” Auction at Sotheby’s

Well, I just found a draft of a Downtown Los Angeles Blog from 2013 and the pictures were all laid out with captions. So I thought for the third year anniversary I would work it up a little and publish it for your entertainment.

I was invited down to L.A. Live in DTLA for lunch and a private tour of the Grammy Museum courtesy of AEG. I was working a deal to package their events with travel and destination specific tours. At the time when this was written I was a newbie travel advisor and set this deal with AEG up for the agency immediately. This lunch meeting was to discuss all the details and I’ll write more on the outcome later in this Blog.

The day included freeway traffic in both directions from the San Fernando Valley, driving around DTLA, parking at Staples Center and L.A. Live, a nice lunch at Rock’N’Fish and a private tour of the Grammy Museum and the AEG offices.

Lunch at Rock’N’Fish!  We shared a Calamari appetizer (no pic, but it was good), then I had the 1/2 rack of Baby Back Ribs with fries and a salad, and Creme Brulee for dessert.  The food was excellent!  The calamari and ribs were tasty and cooked perfectly, and the creme brulee was delicious too.

Photographs are not allowed inside the museum., but I was able to take a picture of the Janis car in the Lobby before taking a private tour. It’s a great space and the permanent and visiting exhibits were pretty spectacular!

The meeting was a great success! I had a terrific lunch and a private tour of the Grammy Museum. I was gifted a couple of FREE tickets to return another time on my own. I wasn’t able to tour the Staples Center because Rihanna was rehearsing for her concert that night (if I remember right, and we would get a private tour of Staples Center on my next visit). It was a good day downtown and they did comp my parking!

The deal included access to the Grammy Museum and the 200 seat performance space, AEG events at L.A. Live and Staples Center including the Kings, Clippers, and Stars games; the BET Experience and other concerts (including corporate CLUB BOXES) and the L.A. Galaxy soccer (fútbol) games. It was a major score! But, the best laid plans….la la la.

Downtown Los Angeles is the central area of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and features many of the city’s major arts institutions and sports facilities, sightseeing opportunities, a variety of skyscrapers and associated large multinational corporations, and an array of public art and unique shopping opportunities. Downtown Los Angeles is the hub of the city’s freeway network and Metro rapid transit system.

Staples Center, opened in 1999, has contributed immensely to the revitalization of Downtown, adding 250 events and nearly 4 million visitors per year to the neighborhood.  Since the opening of the Staples Center, the adjacent L.A. Live complex was completed, which includes the Nokia Theater, the Regency Theaters and the Grammy Museum.
