First time in New York City — highlights?

NOTE: This is another long dormant “unfinished draft” that was originally posted on another site and now has been updated and posted.

Manhattan, New York City, New York

Q: What would you recommend to do in the city for a first time visitor, and what deli would you say is the best?

A: What to do in New York City? It’s the Big Apple baby!
Start with Midtown and Lower Manhattan.

Put on your comfortable walking shoes, check the weather report, and hit the streets of NYC walking! There’s so much to see (people, places and things) and so much history on display as you walk around the city. We once walked from Central Park to Battery Park!

Visit Central Park! www.centralparknyc.org

Katz’s Delicatessen (the “When Harry Met Sally” Diner)

on the sw corner of Houston & Ludlow on the Lower East Side
Zagat gave Katz’s a food rating of 4.5 out of 5,
and ranked the restaurant as the number one deli in NYC in 2016.

Visit Broadway and the Theater District!
See a big budget “Broadway Musical”
See Times Square and eat at Sardi’s (make a reservation) to complete the experience!

Times Square with Vicki Winters @mybigfatmouth

If you’ve been following my Blog you know that I’m currently obsessed with the Periscope App. And why shouldn’t I be? Yesterday in addition to the usual suspects I scope, I watched Vicki Winters (@mybigfatmouth) cruising Times Square in New York City; Anika (@LiterallyAnika) on Go-Pro Gyro-coptering above Dubai and then onboard a party yacht at the Dubai Boat Show; The Who performing LIVE in concert from the sixth row in Toronto, Canada (Thanks @Concertaholics); Ms. Lauryn Hill LIVE rehearsing in the studio in West Hollywood, California (@Jay_Rosado_215) and then Sunrise at Stonehenge from inside the circle on the Salisbury Plain in England (Thanks Dan Snow @thehistoryguy) with a handheld and a DRONE CAMERA! Here are some screenshots:

Throwback Thursday – Flashback Friday again.

Throwback Thursday! Flashback Friday!

Feeling grateful as I look at old photographs. Remembering the many trips and vacations I was fortunate to take and the wonderful places I visited growing up. Here are just a few:

First time at Disneyland! In the Dome of the Monorail with cousin Danny 1970

Every year, Grandma would take all the grandkids to Anaheim for 2 days at Disneyland and a night at the Disneyland Hotel. Grandma also took me on many trips: Glacier National Park, Montana, Niagara Falls, Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton and all across Canada, London and Scotland. And of course Chicago and New York City:

New York City and Liberty Island with Grandma!

I also traveled a lot with my family. Vacations to New York, Washington D.C., Virginia and Philadelphia in 1976 during the nation’s Bicentennial; Hawaii, Big Sur, Yosemite and Sequoia national parks, Lake Tahoe and northern California, San Diego, the Grand Canyon and “Four Corners”, Chicago, Kenosha, a very weird Thanksgiving in Arizona, Mammoth, Palm Springs (where my Grandparents retired), Park City, Utah and even Las Vegas.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” ~ Mark Twain

HOUSE OF CHAN Cookbook 1952 & New York City Restaurant

The HOUSE OF CHAN Cookbook from 1952

“Life, like a cookie jar, would soon be empty if you continued to accept the good things it offers and put in no good things in return.”

House of Chan Cookbook by Sou Chan 1952

HOUSE OF CHAN Cookbook by Sou Chan 1952

“Sou Chan, son of a poor Chinese farmer, came to America twenty years ago and found his first job as dishwasher in a Chinese restaurant. Today he owns the famous House of Chan, located in New York but known from coast to coast for its delicious oriental food and for the genial hospitality of its host.”

The HOUSE OF CHAN Restaurant was located at 52nd St and 7th Ave in New York City in the space now occupied by Rosie O’Grady’s.

From the 1920’s to the 1950’s, 52nd Street between 5th Ave and 7th Ave was known as Swing Street and was home to a dozen of New York City’s best-known jazz clubs.

That area of northern Times Square was also one of the centers of popular music from the 40’s to the 60’s. It was home to both the Brill Building (1619 B’way) and several other buildings (1650 B’way and 1697 B’way) which were jammed with offices and studios of music publishers and songwriters like Carole King, Leiber and Stroller, and Neil Sedaka.
