We are sitting in our Home Office (Doomsday Bunker) in our forced “social distancing” and self-isolating QUARANTINE, safe from infected sick people (because this virus might kill us). And this virus might kill our family and friends.
This virus will kill thousands of people.
CURRENT SCORE:
Reported CoronaVirus Deaths = 14717 humans and increasing!

NOTE: WE ARE REALLY SICK OF THE “NEWS MEDIA” TRYING TO PUT A POSITIVE SPIN ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THIS PANDEMIC AND FORCED QUARANTINE! THERE IS NOTHING FUN OR ENTERTAINING ABOUT THE LOSS OF PERSONAL FREEDOM AND THE THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH – PEOPLE ARE DYING! THE CONSERVATIVE NEWS IS STILL DOWNPLAYING THE THREAT AND SPOUTING RIGHT-WING PROPAGANDA AFTER CALLING IT A HOAX, A DEMOCRATIC TRICK, AND DOWNPLAYING THE EMERGENCY!

These states have “stay-at-home” PUBLIC LOCKDOWN orders:
California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana,

If all else fails, BLAME CHI-NA!

WHO IS ESSENTIAL NOW RICH FOLKS?
Nurses, Janitors, Truck Drivers, Store Clerks, Delivery People, etc.
These are the people holding it together for everyone.
They are all “At Risk” and most live paycheck to paycheck.

ET0G9R7XsAIPaeW

There are many other “low pay” workers not on this list that are also essential!

And what about TEACHERS? Right now millions of parents are discovering what it is like to have to take care of kids all day long, and teach them social skills, and educate them on “reading, writing and rithmetic” (good luck with that), and make sure they eat too.
Teachers have had to adapt to new teaching techniques without any preparation! Some families don’t have internet access or computers, and most are not prepared to “Home School” their children, because they weren’t educated properly. And most schools won’t reopen this year, so the educational gap between rich and poor just widened some more.

And don’t forget the “unskilled workers”.
Someone still has to dispose of the garbage and all the bodies.

The Senate could not reach an agreement on the emergency “Bailout Bill” again today. Republicans want to give billions to corporations without any conditions and Democrats want to give money to the people…. so a $500billion GOP slush fund is not going to work.
NOTE: EVERYTHING TRUMP SAYS IS A LIE!

RANT: DO NOT BAIL OUT THE CRUISE INDUSTRY!
The cruise industry is a huge polluter! There is so much waste in the travel industry! Yes all the cruise ships are flagged in 3rd world countries to avoid US regulations, taxes and labor laws. Most of the crews are from 3rd world countries and sign draconian contracts because they need to feed their families. Cruise ships are natural incubators for disease, so the idea that they would put sick people on cruise ships is insane! The cruise ships are one of the reason the virus spread around the world so fast! The cruise industry does not deserve a bailout, they have assets that will allow them to get no interest loans.

Q: How much money does it take to turn a Trumper into a Socialist?
A: $1000

MARCH 1, 2020

MARCH 1, 2020
(we posted this Blog on March 4, 2020 at 11pm)

On this date in 1973, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was released.

the-dark-side-of-the-moon-758x758

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

All that you touch And all that you see
All that you taste All you feel
And all that you love And all that you hate
All you distrust All you save
And all that you give And all that you deal
And all that you buy, beg, borrow or steal
And all you create And all you destroy
And all that you do And all that you say
And all that you eat And everyone you meet
And all that you slight And everyone you fight
And all that is now And all that is gone
And all that’s to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
– Pink Floyd “Eclipse”

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

The Dark Side of the Moon is the 8th studio album by Pink Floyd.
Recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios from May 1972 – January 1973
Engineered by Alan Parsons, and mixed with the help of producer Chris Thomas.
The famous album cover was created by English graphic designer George Hardie
(with input from Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis).

Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon: A Piece for Assorted Lunatics’
premiered at the Brighton Dome on January 20th, 1972.
And the album spent 937 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200!

30713886_2224118957614658_4811858256362209280_n
“Money” was Pink Floyd’s first Top 20 single in the United States. It reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1973. The 7/4 time signature (except for during the guitar-solo when it changes to 4/4), the iconic Roger Waters bass riff, David Gilmore’s ripping guitar lead, the saxophone solo by Dick Parry, and the sound loop made of cash registers and coins make it memorable and a true rock and roll masterpiece!

“There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it’s all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the sun.” – Abbey Road Doorman Gerry O’Driscoll

Tidal forces have slowed down the Moon’s rotation and so, the same side always faces Earth, a phenomenon called tidal locking. The other side, most of which is never visible from Earth, is therefore called the ‘Far Side of the Moon’.

“Be excellent to each other!” – “And Party On Dude!”

In 2018 Alan Parsons received the Grammy award for Best Immersive Audio Album after being previously nominated 13 times! And they also played at Burning Man! The band opened with about 50 minutes of hits and performed the entire album “I, Robot”, finishing up with an encore at Reverbia camp.

And so, because we missed them at Burning Man, we bought a ticket to the show!
Our original ticket was for the front row of the Mezzanine, and they were upgrading tickets because it was far from a sellout show. At first, we declined the upgraded ticket, but when we got to our seat, the band’s photographer was setting up a video camera directly in front of where we’d be sitting. So we found the General Manager and he gave us a good ticket in the Orchestra section (Row B).

The seat was excellent, and the seats on both sides were empty, so no stranger’s elbows, knees or other physical intrusions to contend with. And sitting right behind us was invited celebrity Adam Carolla (from KROQ radio, “The Man Show”, “Crankyankers”, “Loveline”, and his famous podcast) and his friend who was “with the band.”
NOTE: the friend was “Chatty Cathy” all through the show giving Adam a running commentary on the music, the band, and his connections…. luckily the music was loud enough that it pretty much drowned out their conversation. It was cool when Alan Parsons dedicated and played the song “La Sagrada Familia” during the show per Adam Corolla’s request and gave him a shout out.  Adam yells “YOU’RE WELCOME BITCHES!”

“How do you get to Vilshire?”

“Is that you John Wayne?” or is it Larry Flynt?
It’s the John Wayne statue in front of the 10 story oval shaped bronze colored Flynt Building at 8484 Wilshire Blvd and La Cienega Blvd in Beverly Hills, 90210. The land was once a miniature golf course owned by Mary Pickford in the 1930’s. Built in 1972, it was originally the Great Western Savings Bank building, and John Wayne was their TV pitchman. When he died in 1979 they erected the cowboy statue. Great Western sold the building to Larry Flynt and “Hustler” magazine in 1994 for $18.3 million, and then Flynt sold the building for $89 million in 2013 to the Douglas Emmett company, and signed a long term office lease with them.

THE SABAN THEATRE – 8440 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills 90210
The historic Art Deco Fox Wilshire Theatre was designed by architect S. Charles Lee and opened in September 1930. It was a 2500 seat movie palace with a stage for performance. In 1981 it was converted to a performance venue and in 2009 it was renamed the Saban Theatre (after a $5 million dollar grant from Haim and Cheryl Saban). The Temple of the Arts, a Jewish religious organization, has owned and operated the building since 2005. The building is on the National and State Registry of Historic Places and has also been designated a Beverly Hills Landmark. The lighting, sound, and event space was redone and the theatre now seats ~2000 people in the orchestra, mezzanine and balcony.

We arrived early and found metered street parking on La Cienega close to Wilshire! The meters weren’t active so we parked for FREE! We walked two blocks to the Saban Theatre and picked up our ticket at WillCall. There weren’t a lot of people out front, just people stopping before going in, and a couple of guys looking for a ticket to the show…. but it wasn’t sold out, so it wasn’t quite clear why they were looking for tickets.

Alan Parsons Live Project Merchandise For Sale

We went inside, cleared Security and the metal detectors, and entered the beautiful rotunda lobby. Beer and wine bar on the left, merchandise booth on the right, hard alcohol bar straight ahead, and Men’s room upstairs. We checked out the space, bought a small bottled water for $3.00 and used the restroom upstairs before it got busy. We also went to our seat in the Mezzanine and scoped out the Balcony while we were upstairs, and that’s when we encountered the band’s photographer. So we went downstairs, spoke with the Manager, and then went to our new seat in the Orchestra.

The Hard Alcohol Bar in the Lobby of the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills

It’s a beautiful proscenium arch theatre that’s been restored to reflect the original design by S. Charles Lee while being adapted for modern concerts and Broadway shows. The Art Deco interior was lit with purple and blue lighting to enhance the complex design details.

THE SHOW!
Started at a little late after 9pm and they played a fantastic 45 minute long first set. There was half hour intermission and then they played another great hour long second set with encore. The show ended just before 11:30pm.

The Alan Parsons Live Project at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills 2-7-2020

Such a talented group of gifted musicians! And they rocked! We had a conversation at Intermission with our seat neighbor about how good the band was, how some classic bands just don’t have it anymore, and how this was not the case with Alan Parsons. And the technical aspects of the show were also terrific. They had a great sound system and a good light show, but of course the music was the star of the show.

Check out the vid we shot (and also check out the other vids on our YouTube channel):

They are touring in support of their new music “The Secret” available on all formats now.

Is trying hard to learn their song
They serenade the weekend squire
Who just came out to mow his lawn
Another pleasant valley Sunday
Charcoal burning everywhere
Rows of houses that are all the same
And no one seems to care
See Mrs. Gray, she’s proud today
Because her roses are in bloom
And Mr. Green, he’s so serene
He’s got a TV in every room
Another pleasant valley Sunday
Here in Status Symbol Land
Mothers complain about how hard life is
And the kids just don’t understand
Creature comfort goals, they only numb my soul
And make it hard for me to see
Ah, thoughts all seem to stray to places far away
I need a change of scenery

“Dead in the Dome 2.0”
a concert with Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band
with Steve Kimock and DJ Logic
and Samskara at the Wisdome in DTLA.

NOTE: The concert was November 9th, 2019. We started this Blog Post and then it sat all through November-December, and now it’s January 2020. So we are finally posting it.

Jerry Garcia

The Jerry Garcia Band (JGB) is a San Francisco Bay Area rock band. It was founded in 1975 by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. It and his collaboration with David Grisman (Grateful Dawg) were the most important of his many side projects before his death in 1995. The JGB continues to tour with Melvin Seals and Steve Kimock.

Downtown Los Angeles! Somewhere near the Urth Cafe in a kinda sketchy part of the Arts District is WisDome.LA. It’s a collection of container buildings and geo-domes. Enter through a container Box Office and “Lobby”. The open air space and astroturf with psychedelic mood lighting puts you in the mood for “Dead In the Dome 2.0”!

The WisDome Facilities:

75380185_3202599259766618_1764428069059166208_n

The large Domes contain the exhibits and the performance venue. One had the Samskara visual art exhibit, one had mirrors, one just had psychedelic projections and music with cushions on the floor to sit and lie on, and one had the stage and projection setup for the band’s performance with dance space, chair seating and reclined VIP viewing sofa seats.

The restrooms (Banos) are in a portable trailer with tall stairs to negotiate and a swinging door that might knock you out. The VIP Section was fenced off and adjacent to a two-story container building, with the bottom floor seating available as a VIP lounge space and the upstairs used as the Artist Dressing and Green Room area. There was a vegan food truck and a cocktail bar serving food and drink. And there was a small Merchandise Dome and a few Vendor Tents and Tables set up outside selling cool “Shakedown Street” stuff. There was a cold Mediterranean food buffet inside the VIP.

And here is only a small sampling of the Visual Art:

NOTE: Samskara = Very trippy psychedelic art that was also interactive. The art changed colors on it’s own, depending on lighting and “mood” settings. And there’s an APP for viewing the art that adds a whole other dimension of psychedelia! It has to be seen to be experienced. There was also video art with both small, medium and very large screens for art viewing. And more cushions on the floor for sitting and lying down on while viewing. We also shot some video of the experience, so check it out!

Inside one of the Domes there was a giant kaleidoscope type projection set to music being projected, and unfortunately our pictures just don’t do the effects justice. They were very beautiful 3-D CGI graphics that moved and morphed. There was another Dome that had mirrors reflection different graphic patterns.

included a COLD vegan Middle Eastern vegan buffet and one drink ticket.

The JGB Band ROCKED! It was a great show musically! Melvin Seals and Steve Kimock played great and brought back sweet memories of Jerry as the band performed some JGB setlist staples:

Steve played so well, the band made him a permanent member a couple weeks later! Well deserved and a great addition to The JGB! There were a couple moments during the show that took me right back to seeing Jerry in the 80s at The Stone in San Francisco.

The projections were cool, and added to the experience, but the focus was on the band. the music, and the lightshow, and since we didn’t add any psychedelic enhancement to our experience, the visual effects were secondary to the concert experience.

NOTE: The concert was billed as a “2 Night Event”, but we only went on Saturday.

69674606_3202647699761774_4975157873643356160_n

NOW HERE IS THE THING! VERY IMPORTANT! AND ALSO A RANT!

We paid a lot more for the VIP experience and recliner sofa seats upfront near the stage. And when the concert started our viewing experience was ruined by the standing crowd that was allowed in front of the stage and in the aisle next to our low lounge seat.
And there were NO USHERS, STAFF OR SECURITY PEOPLE ANYWHERE! Seriously, we went looking and had to go to the Tech Staff at the sound/light/projection board and ask if there was anyone! We went outside to find someone and encountered a private security guard who told us that he wasn’t security for the concert, but he would try to find someone. So we went back and tried to enjoy the first set with the rude millennial jerkoffs who never saw Jerry standing in the aisle blocking the audience’s view of the stage and completely inconsiderate of anyone else. So, at the Intermission we went and found the PERSON IN CHARGE and told him what’s up. He was apologetic and responded to the problems and for the Second Set there were Ushers placed to keep the dance floor crowd on the dance floor at the back of the house. Of course, it was too little too late, and there still a crowd in front of the stage (and it’s always the tall people who do the one step right, one step left dance of course). The PERSON IN CHARGE told me they would refund my ticket, and they did!

Thank you WisDome.LA for the Tremendous Customer Service and satisfaction!

That being said, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SECURITY AT THE VENUE!
The Deadhead crowd was older and very well behaved, with the exception of the Millennials who never saw Jerry, and the lack of Security and easily identifiable Staff, was still a problem! We would not recommend anyone we know attend an event until they fix this problem! If there had been an Emergency or a Situation, it would have not gone well. Additionally the Door Security at the Box Office was almost non-existent: there was no search or surveillance security that we could detect. It’s a really nice facility and the concept is great, but we didn’t feel safe. And all it takes is one unfortunate incident that gets some press and no one will ever go there again…remember Westwood?

Urth Caffe in DTLA

After the show, we walked the two blocks back to our car. There is lots of street parking, but it fills up if there’s an event, and the neighborhood remains sketchy…. so we found a parking space across from the Urth Caffe (got lucky) because it’s well lit and there’s a lot of foot traffic. Also, they have a clean restroom without a line for use before and after the event, which is a definite benefit. And we drove home without incident.

Friday night, lots of traffic on the 405 and into Inglewood on the way. Parking was confusing and we ended up paying $30 to park far away near the SOFI Stadium still under construction. So we walked a long way to get into the Fabulous Forum.

80625576_3324160397610503_6678214480700112896_n

The doors were open and the show was starting when we arrived and the BULLS*T security check took a lot longer than it should have, even though there was no line! They had walk-through metal detectors and untrained staff working the tables….

81551301_3324217730938103_7274864448332890112_n

So we cleared the checkpoint and in we went, we missed the Truckin’ opener and didn’t even bother to go to our designated seat in the back nosebleeds. Instead we moved to the front and down into the side loge boxes and found an unoccupied seat with a great view of the band onstage during Alabama Getaway. It was actually two empty seats, so we had room to dance a little. And we enjoyed the view so much, that we went back after intermission and danced there for the second set too.

Have to admit that it was my first live Dead & Company show. Had not seen them live in person before, only via vids and live interweb transmissions, so being there was great! The show was a little slow in places for my taste and they noodled (improvised jam session) a whole lot. Kept thinking how much we miss Jerry Garcia, and especially how much we miss Brent Mydland and his keyboards/piano/organ and vocals.

Intermission! We headed for concessions and got a bag of nacho cheese Doritos and a bottled water ($4.50 + $5.50 = $10) and it took forever in a relatively short line…. we used the restroom and wandered around outside checking out the scene on the smoking patio.

Expensive Concessions at the Fabulous Forum

2nd Set TERRAPIN! They were teasing Dark Star all through the first set, so when they went into Lady With A Fan>Terrapin Station after Playing In The Band it really made our night! Oteil sang China Doll and they sandwiched Drums/Space inside The Other One. They closed out the set with a long Wharf Rat and rocking’ US Blues. And then they played Dark Star the following night (which we watched on the interweb).

They closed the show with an encore performance of Ripple (with Bob and John playing acoustic guitars) as a tribute to the late great Robert Hunter.  It was beautiful, and of course the audience always sings along! The show finished at one minute to eleven.

Cool guitars! Outside on the patio, they had more concessions, merchandise stands (with shirts and hoodies priced from $45-$100), and the Participation Row area. Win a guitar or bid and buy a guitar? Of course always for a good cause.

Trixie and Sunshine flew in over the audience in a biplane “The Dead Baron” built from the skeleton of the “Giant Joint”. We weren’t there, we watched it LIVE on the interweb.

NOTE: We started feeling sick with a sore throat and didn’t go out on New Years Eve because we didn’t want to expose any of our friends to our oncoming illness.

It was an easy drive from the San Fernando Valley to Malibu. There was only a little stopped traffic caused by the stoplight and left-turning cars at the intersection of Las Virgenes and Mulholland going through the Santa Monica Mountains to the beach. Our destination: Pepperdine University on the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) above the Pacific Ocean.

View of Malibu and the Pacific Ocean from Pepperdine at night

We parked for FREE in the shuttle lot and after a short ride we were at the Smothers Theatre picking up our ticket at WillCall. It was a beautiful evening at the beach! We arrived early, walked around a little, took some pictures of the campus, and then visited the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art next door and experienced the “It’s All Black & White” contemporary art exhibit for FREE! (pictures of the art in our previous Blog Post)

Lovely fountains, the Palm Court next to the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, steps that lead down to the lower campus and a Starbuck’s, the parking lot and the Smothers Theatre at the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts – Pepperdine University in Malibu.

And when they opened the house doors, we went to find our seat. Orchestra Row B, on the side aisle. The show started about 15 minutes late, and then it was magic time! Taimane has a beautiful voice  and she jams on the ukulele (and guitar)! She talked directly to the audience, introduced each section/song during the performance and created a intimate relationship with the audience. Her quartet were also amazing! She was accompanied by a guitar, violin and percussion (actually a trio) and two wonderful dancers who performed hula and haka dances during a few of her pieces. We enjoyed the show very much! We love LIVE MUSIC! And the performance was really fun.

One of the reasons we chose a seat on the side was in case video recording was allowed…. and it was! The lighting and our cheap cel phone camera made it difficult to get good pictures (as you can see, we had the same problem at Lebowskifest), but the videos we shot came out pretty good and did a good job of capturing the musical performance.

A couple interesting points: 1. The theatre space makes the performance different from a club venue or music stage, and the audience response was great, but somewhat subdued.
2. The actual show length was kind of short. They started late and played a short first set, then there was an intermission, and a longer second set.  And done before 10:30. There was time for more music (at least another song), and there could and should have been a little or a lot more music, and maybe less introduction. But for only $22 for the ticket we should just shut up, because it was a fabulous performance that we really enjoyed.

NOTE: Why does this always happen? The nice (old) couple behind me sat down and started talking…. season ticket holders? They knew nothing about the artist or the music.
And they had a wonderful experience! We know because they talked….

During Intermission and after the show, Taimane worked the “Merch” table, signing autographs and taking pictures with everyone! The other musicians and the dancers also came and mingled with the crowd and everyone was very friendly.

We rode the shuttle back to the parking lot and walked to our car enjoying the view of Malibu and the Pacific Ocean at night from the university heights. We once lived in the Pacific Palisades on the Pacific Coast Highway just south of Malibu with a panoramic view of the ocean and we really miss enjoying it 24/7.  We drove south on PCH and then back to the San Fernando Valley through Topanga Canyon. There was construction and we had to stop twice for traffic when it was just a single lane. There were too many slow drivers and one crazy tailgater, but we got home eventually without incident.

Our CUBICLE in the West Los Angeles Office

As a Hollywood Talent Manager we worked from the Home Office for over 10 years. It was a big change having to wake up, get ready and then drive to work to get to the office and our work desk in our cubicle space. Try doing the 405 Freeway Crawl for a year! It was only 12 miles, but it could take well over an hour to get from the Valley to West L.A. And the drive “over the hill” isn’t much better using the canyon roads, as we found out working at the Century City adjacent Talent Agency. It sucks to arrive at work already stressed out from the drive, and then to still have to be present and accounted for all day. And then stress out on the drive home in horrible traffic again after work…….

Agent, Agent, Agent! Three jobs in a row:
Commercial Real Estate (sales & leasing) Agent – nice cubicle in nice office as seen above.
Hollywood Talent Agent – had our own office, but it really was just a “private” cubicle.
Luxury Travel Advisor/Travel Agent – didn’t even get walls, just got an open desk space.

Milton: “I believe you have my stapler.”

And at present we are back in the Home Office, Right now, we are finishing this Blog Post in our bathrobe at 4:30am while drinking coffee and watching reruns (that we’ve already seen too many times) of “Two And A Half Men”.
