Louis B. Mayer July 12, 1884 – October 29, 1957

Louis B. Mayer co-founded Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios in 1924, and for 30 years, he was the most powerful producer and studio executive in Hollywood.

#MeToo

Accused rapist Harvey Weinstein is one of the most award-winning producers in history. Films he was involved in at Miramax and The Weinstein Co. won 81 Academy Awards and (in 2015) he was second only to Steven Spielberg in the number of times thanked in Oscar acceptance speeches. Weinstein was expelled from the Academy, Hollywood, and the entertainment industry following numerous sexual assault and sexual harassment allegations going public last year. The Academy’s Board of Governors voted in an emergency meeting to remove Weinstein and said in a statement:
“We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.”

“It’s time for Oscar to take center stage,
This guy’s had work done, he never shows his age,
He’s ninety-two now, but still all the rage,
That’s why the Oscar, that is why the Oscar,
That’s why Oscar is a champ!

The Streaker at the Oscars!

Robert Opel a conceptual artist, photographer, gallery owner, teacher, and gay rights activist “streaked” the Academy Awards on live television. He ran onstage nude flashing a peace sign at the 46th award ceremony in 1974.

David Niven, the Host of the show (interrupted while introducing Elizabeth Taylor):
“Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen…. Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”

After running offstage, Opel put on a jumpsuit and blended in with the reporters. When he was caught, he wasn’t arrested, he was taken backstage and gave a press conference.

We like Sally Field!

“And I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me.”

(She also won a Best Actress Oscar for “Norma Rae” in 1980)

“Who knows who will win the Oscar,
Only Price-Waterhouse can say,
So, if you want the answers…
…May I have the envelope please!”

Accountants from PricewaterhouseCoopers count all the ballots, oversee Academy elections (as well as the Oscars) and they also do the Academy’s taxes.
The Academy has used sealed envelopes to protect the names of the winners since 1941.

HALLOWEEN 2019

HALLOWEEN 2019 (Still on October 31st, for now)

TRICK OR TREAT?

“When hinges creak in doorless chambers
And strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls
Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still
That is the time when ghosts are present
Practicing their terror with ghoulish delight”

Halloween, also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve is still on October 31st for now.

“When witches go riding, and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers, ’tis near Halloween.”

Try carving a Pineapple!

Julie Driscoll sings “Must Be the Season of the Witch!” with Brian Auger in 1968>

The Halloween traditions originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. During Samhain the souls of those who had died wold return to visit their homes, and those who died during the year were believed to journey on to the otherworld. When the Romans conquered the Celts in the first century, they added some traditions (like bobbing for apples) from the festivals of Feralia and Pomona, celebrating the passing of the dead and the goddess of the harvest respectively, to the ancient holiday.

“Trick or treat, bag of sweets, ghosts are walking down the street.”

The Battle of Puebla during the Second French intervention in Mexico (the French-Mexican War 1861-1867), took place on May 5th, 1862, near Puebla City, Mexico. The outnumbered Mexican Army of Benito Juárez defeated the invading French forces of Napoleon III. France controlled Mexico until 1867, until Mexican troops overthrew the government. The Mexican victory at Puebla is celebrated every year on the fifth of May.

DUDEISM: Come join the slowest-growing religion in the world, Dudeism.
An ancient philosophy that preaches non-preachiness, practices as little as possible, and above all, uh…lost my train of thought there.
Anyway, if you’d like to find peace on earth and goodwill, man, we’ll help you get started.
Right after a little nap.

NOTE: There are some states and counties that are very undude. First check with the County Clerk where the ceremony is to be performed to confirm or disconfirm whether Dudeist ceremonies are cool and legal.

It’s Groundhog Day!

“It’s Groundhog Day!” (again)

27540957_2122516084441613_6899595018586655408_n

“BING!”

“Ned… Ryerson. “Needlenose Ned”? “Ned the Head”? C’mon, buddy. Case Western High. Ned Ryerson: I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson: got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn’t graduate? Bing, again. Ned Ryerson: I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore? Well?”

“Ned?”
giphy

February 2nd is always Groundhog Day!

groundhog-day

“Don’t drive angry!”

The Groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as  the woodchuck (aka chuck, wood-shock, groundpig, whistlepig, whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk and, among French Canadians, siffleux), is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots.

ocQliaf

“There is no way that this winter is *ever* going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don’t see any other way out. He’s got to be stopped.
….And I have to stop him.”

EXTREME COLD ACROSS THE UNITED STATES! Stay warm!

“You want a prediction about the weather, you’re asking the wrong Phil. I’ll give you a winter prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life.”

giphy

Punxsutawney is the largest incorporated municipal borough in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. The largest Groundhog Day celebration in the United States takes place every February 2nd at Gobbler’s Knob with Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog, who predicts the weather. According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If Phil doesn’t see his shadow, there will be an “early spring.”
Groundhog-Day-2019-1719337

1886 was the first time that Groundhog Day appeared in the Punxsutawney newspaper and February 2, 1887, was the first official ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob.

2019: Punxsutawney Phil predicts an “EARLY SPRING”!

“This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.”

636530926151934233-no-shadow

2019: EARLY SPRING!

“When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.”

Phil is kept in a special enclosure at the town library. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle takes care of Phil year-round and they script the Groundhog Day ceremonies in advance, with the decision on whether he’ll see his shadow made in advance.

logo-pgc
NOTE:
There is only one Punxsutawney Phil, and all other groundhogs are impostors!

Groundhog Day is rooted in a Celtic and Germanic tradition and the pagan holiday of Imbolc, also known as Candlemas. When German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania, they transferred the tradition to the local wildlife, replacing hedgehogs with groundhogs.

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Come, Winter, have another flight;
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Go Winter, and come not again.

51152749_10157084825523054_3041125231147089920_n

“Groundhog Day” is a 1993 comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and stars Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a TV weatherman caught in a time loop during an assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event, repeatedly reliving the same day.
NOTE: The film was shot in Woodstock, Illinois, not Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
groundhog-day-poster

“Groundhog Day, The Musical” is also musical comedy stage play with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, and book by Danny Rubin. Based on the 1993 film of the same name.

The video for “Say No More (Mon Amour)” was shot in one day at Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina. Originally, it was meant to be just 17 seconds of dance moves, but it was so good, they just went ahead and filmed the entire music video.

Rex Manning was a fictional pop star (played by the very talented actor Maxwell Caulfied) in the 1995 film Empire Records.

Doug Benson (screenshot from Periscope)

WE LOVE MOVIES TOO DOUG!
So, we decided at the end of 2015 to accept the DougLovesMovies 366 Movies Challenge and we succeeded in watching well over 366 films (plus a few HBO & Netflix mini-series, too much election news coverage, the MLB Playoffs/WorldSeries and NFL Football Regular Season Games) in 2016!

We began the challenge on January 2nd and finished watching our “366th film” on December 30th. We kept a list as we watched, but ultimately forgot (for several reasons) to write some down. It wasn’t easy and we don’t recommend it, but we did it, it was fun and now we’re done with it.

[shouted repeatedly while smashing a car with a crow bar]
This is what happens when you f*ck a stranger in the ass!

“You see what happens, Larry?!
This is what happens when you f*ck a stranger in the ass Larry!
[Proceeds to smash up what he wrongly believes is Larry’s new Corvette]
This is what happens, Larry! You see what happens Larry?!
You see what happens when you f*ck a stranger in the ass?!”

SPOILER ALERT:
The Dude’s car is stolen, with the real ransom money briefcase still inside…
The car is found by the police without the ransom money, and the Dude reclaims it. Later, the Dude finds the homework assignment of a high school student named Larry Sellars (he’s flunking Social Studies) inside. Taking this to mean that Larry was the one who stole the car, Walter and The Dude go to his house, believing Larry has also stolen the money. When Larry refuses to respond to Walter and the Dude’s threats, Walter wrecks a new sports car parked outside which they assume Larry bought with the money.
