Saturday, April 24, 2021 – Saturday!

4:20am: We slept for a few hours and then we woke up early, before 4:00am.

8:45am: We went back to bed.
The dogs got fed, the dogs went outside.
We drank a cup of espresso.

We watched “History Detectives” – an episode we’ve seen before on Rock and Roll stuff.
It features Bob Dylan’s Fender guitar from Newport ’65, a couple of Beatles’ autographs, and a Frank Zappa art piece. Great episode.

The 2012 episode found out that the airplane pilot’s daughter had the guitar in New Jersey, and after a legal battle, she sold the Stratocaster at auction. Indianapolis Colts owner and Rock and Roll collector, Jim Irsay bought Dylan’s Newport guitar in 2013 for $965,000.

Irsay also bought Jerry Garcia’s one-of-a-kind “Tiger” guitar, made by Doug Irwin, at auction for $957,000 in 2002, and spent Five Million Dollars on some of David Gilmore’s guitars when they were auctioned for charity a few years ago. He has an amazing collection.

10:05am: We took the dogs outside again. We made another cup of espresso.
And then we cut up a pineapple, and ate a couple pieces.

12:25pm: We are chillin’ in the Home Office with the dogs again.
We took them outside and now they’re napping.
We made another cup of espresso and ate brunch/lunch.
On the Menu: toasted onion bagel with lox and cream cheese, dill pickle,
celery & carrot sticks, Italian salami, and a black&white cookie

 

4:45pm: We took a long nap with the dogs. Then we took the dogs outside.
And we just made a cup of espresso.

5:20pm: SO FUCKING TIRED OF THIS SH*T.

And a piece of fancy chocolate cake for dessert

Sunday, April 25, 2021 – Sunday! Oscar! Oscar! Sunday!

8:15am: Sunday morning. Dogs got fed. Dogs went outside.
We drank a cup of espresso and some orange juice.  Drink Coffee. Drink Water.
We ate a toasted onion bagel with cream cheese.

12:10pm: SUNDAY! SUNDAY! And we have liftoff.
We went back to bed and slept for a little bit. And then there was barking…..
We took the dogs outside. And now we are fully chill. But we are hungry too.
Choreboy is about to arrive, and now there’s some stuff to do around the house.

So, Choreboy did two loads of laundry and scooped all the poop.
He cleaned out the fridge, which was already pretty empty.
And then he did some dishes. He’ll be back tomorrow most likely for more.
It’s cold, and gray, and windy outside today.
We ate a toasted egg bagel with peanut butter and raspberry jam for lunch.
And we made some popcorn and drank a coke during the Oscars.

Okay, here’s one for #StorySunday (on Monday):
Way back in the mid 1980s, we started gambling in Reno, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. And then we started working in the Hollywood film industry in 1989, and we met Frankie Valli and a old school “Friend of Frank’s” comedian named Joey Villa. Joey was friends with Meshulam Riklis and his wife Pia Zadora. Riklis was a corporate raider who bought the Riviera in 1973. Our friend Joey was booking the comedy room at the Riviera and also appearing in the “Splash” Revue stage show for many years, so when we visited him in Las Vegas in 1991, it was all VIP fun and a big party with Perry Como in the Penthouse. It was Old School Vegas, with real mobsters, and black tie glamour, at the Riv. “And now it’s all gone” They blew it up and tore it down, and now it’s a parking lot for the expanded LV Convention Center. Vegas just eats its own. So, we have a matching set of souvenir Riviera mugs, and ashtrays, and matches and even mini shampoo bottles from the many hotel stays. And sometimes we stayed next door at the El Morrocco/La Concha Motel or at another Strip hotel. And so we found this mug when thrifting, right before they announced the closing and demolished the hotel in 2015. We have so many crazy Las Vegas stories. They moved the Crazy Girls bronze statue to Planet Hollywood, so you can still see rub their butts for good luck. 2:50am: Hello Monday morning, we’re up early. We fell asleep with the dogs for a little bit.
Not sure how long. It’s too early. So, we thought we’d update this Blog Post…. 

4:45am: Two hours later. And we decided to try to watch Disney/PIXAR’s “Soul” again.

NOTE: “Soul” was great. It was beautiful. And it had a great Disney ending.

11:55pm: Recapping Monday. Nothing happened.
We didn’t mean to take the day off, but it happened.
The dogs got fed. The dogs went outside. We got the newspapers and the mail.
The housekeeper came. We took a nap with the dogs. We drank espresso.
Drink coffee. Drink water.
It was a nice day outside. And now it’s overcast and drizzling a littlest midnight.
We ate a toasted bagel with cream cheese for lunch. And we just made dinner.
On The Menu: Mac’n’cheese just before midnight (and we are done now)

8:05am: We drank a cup of espresso. Drink Coffee. Drink Water. Damn the Man!

8:55am: Okay, now we have to get ready. we actually have to do something today.

 8:10pm: Recapping Thursday. We went to our new dentist.
Our old dentist retired, and we didn’t like the dentist he sold his practice to,
so we found a new dentist. And we had our first exam and cleaning today.
WE RODE IN AN ELEVATOR WITH ANOTHER PERSON!
For the first time in over a year, we rode in an elevator on the way in.
And we walked down the stairs on the way out.
We talked to strangers (the hygienist and nurses, and our new dentist)
for an extended period of time during the exam. It was really weird to be around other people.
And while we were unmasked in the office, we were sitting next to a germ-killing machine in the exam space. We also called from the parking lot before coming up to the office.
They were wearing masks and PPE, the office was clean and we felt pretty safe.
If you read our previous Blog Post about our exam with the other (new) dentist last week,
this was far and away a much better and much less panic-inducing experience.

It was a beautiful day outside today too. Warm and sunny.
We took a shower in the morning and put on pants and shoes,
we drove our car around the neighborhood a little bit.
And we filled up our gas tank….. and HOW IS GAS $4.00 A GALLON? WTF?

So then we went home and took a nap with the dogs. We drank an iced coffee.
We ate a quesadilla with salsa. We drank an iced coffee.
We were outside with the dogs more than twice. We fed the dogs their supper.
How did it get to be 8:30pm?
And now let’s play “What’s for Dinner?” – we need to eat something soon.
And we still need to celebrate Rex Manning Day properly.

So, now let’s talk about CA EDD and BofA:
California Unemployment TOTAL FAIL and Bank of America’s CRIMINAL FRAUD!

The story so far: We finally filed for unemployment. We verified with ID.me again.
Our claim was approved and our account was funded with our first two weeks, and then our second two weeks of payments. And we received our EDD Debit Card.
WE COULD NOT ACTIVATE THE EDD DEBIT CARD on the BofA website.
We spent hours on the phone and on hold going around and around with EDD and BofA.
We were told by EDD that the hold on the account was released and BofA was notified.
We were told because of backlog, it could take 10-14 days for BofA to be notified.
WE MAILED A REQUEST FOR CHECKS TO BE MAILED BY EDD – Must Remove BofA!

We sent many messages and emails to EDD and BofA.
We filed online complaints with the FTC and FBI.
We called our Congressman, State Senator, and State Assemblyman too.
We contacted someone in the Assemblyman’s office who said they would help us!
We received a misspelled and confusing message from EDD that changed our check request back to EDD DEBIT CARD….
An EDD DEBIT CARD THAT WE CANNOT ACTIVATE!
and we cannot contact anyone at EDD or BofA to help us…..
Tony for BofA Regulatory Complaints called from an unidentified 877 toll number…
and left a message. We have called back twice and left messages on his voicemail.
We are still waiting for him to call again.
AND WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE EDD DEBIT CARD TO BE ACTIVATED!
So, today we called the Assemblyman’s office again
(after messaging EDD again and leaving another message for Tony at BofA),
They are working remotely in the Assemblyman’s office, so we left a message with the office staffer, and then our contact called us back pretty quick, and told us she didn’t previously have our phone number or email….????) We told her our story of EDD FAILURE, sent her an email with a screenshot of the EDD message, and our wonderful contact said she would get back to us by the end of the day today! She has contacts at EDD and someone at BofA who can maybe do something.

We received an email from our contact in reply to the email and screenshot we sent her.

The Lantern Festival is the final day of the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year celebration.
A traditional food for the Lantern Festival is a round rice ball filled with sweet red bean paste, sesame paste, or peanut butter called “Yuanxiao” and/or “Tangyuan”.

Louis B. Mayer co-founded Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios in 1924, and for 30 years, he was the most powerful producer and studio executive in Hollywood.

Accused rapist Harvey Weinstein is one of the most award-winning producers in history. Films he was involved in at Miramax and The Weinstein Co. won 81 Academy Awards and (in 2015) he was second only to Steven Spielberg in the number of times thanked in Oscar acceptance speeches. Weinstein was expelled from the Academy, Hollywood, and the entertainment industry following numerous sexual assault and sexual harassment allegations going public last year. The Academy’s Board of Governors voted in an emergency meeting to remove Weinstein and said in a statement:
“We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.”

Robert Opel a conceptual artist, photographer, gallery owner, teacher, and gay rights activist “streaked” the Academy Awards on live television. He ran onstage nude flashing a peace sign at the 46th award ceremony in 1974.

David Niven, the Host of the show (interrupted while introducing Elizabeth Taylor):
“Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen…. Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”

After running offstage, Opel put on a jumpsuit and blended in with the reporters. When he was caught, he wasn’t arrested, he was taken backstage and gave a press conference.

Accountants from PricewaterhouseCoopers count all the ballots, oversee Academy elections (as well as the Oscars) and they also do the Academy’s taxes.
The Academy has used sealed envelopes to protect the names of the winners since 1941.

Julia Phillips, Producer & Author April 7, 1944 – January 1, 2002

Julia Phillips was the first female producer to win an Academy Award for Best Picture for “The Sting” in 1974. And at age twenty-nine, at the time, she was also the youngest person to win an Oscar for Best Picture. She also produced “Taxi Driver” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” with her husband Michael Phillips. In 1991, she wrote the book “You’ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again” a revealing tell-all memoir about her experiences in Hollywood.

The Halloween traditions originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. During Samhain the souls of those who had died wold return to visit their homes, and those who died during the year were believed to journey on to the otherworld. When the Romans conquered the Celts in the first century, they added some traditions (like bobbing for apples) from the festivals of Feralia and Pomona, celebrating the passing of the dead and the goddess of the harvest respectively, to the ancient holiday.

The outnumbered Mexican Army of Benito Juárez defeated the invading French forces of Napoleon III. France controlled Mexico until 1867, until Mexican troops overthrew the government. Recipe: Ahi tuna (cut into cubes), chopped onion, chopped celery, avocado, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, garlic powder, red pepper, and red pepper flakes
Mix ingredients together in a bowl, adding avocado last. Enjoy!

The Groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as  the woodchuck (aka chuck, wood-shock, groundpig, whistlepig, whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk and, among French Canadians, siffleux), is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots.

Punxsutawney is the largest incorporated municipal borough in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. The largest Groundhog Day celebration in the United States takes place every February 2nd at Gobbler’s Knob with Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog, who predicts the weather. According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If Phil doesn’t see his shadow, there will be an “early spring.”

1886 was the first time that Groundhog Day appeared in the Punxsutawney newspaper and February 2, 1887, was the first official ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob.

Phil is kept in a special enclosure at the town library. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle takes care of Phil year-round and they script the Groundhog Day ceremonies in advance, with the decision on whether he’ll see his shadow made in advance.

NOTE: There is only one Punxsutawney Phil, and all other groundhogs are impostors!

Groundhog Day is rooted in a Celtic and Germanic tradition and the pagan holiday of Imbolc, also known as Candlemas. When German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania, they transferred the tradition to the local wildlife, replacing hedgehogs with groundhogs.

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Come, Winter, have another flight;
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Go Winter, and come not again.

“Groundhog Day” is a 1993 comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and stars Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a TV weatherman caught in a time loop during an assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event, repeatedly reliving the same day.
NOTE: The film was shot in Woodstock, Illinois, not Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

“Groundhog Day, The Musical” is also musical comedy stage play with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, and book by Danny Rubin. Based on the 1993 film of the same name.

Filming location for “Boogie Nights”

Just another Donut store in the San Fernando Valley? Yes, and NO!
It was the location for the climatic scene in the film “Boogie Nights” where Don Cheadle’s character Buck Swope is caught in the middle of a robbery and shootout.

And they have really tasty Donuts and Pastries!

On The Menu: DONUTS! Chocolate custard filled, chocolate bar, raspberry jelly filled, a cinnamon roll and a Napoleon pastry “to go”.
