The 86 Rules of the Bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 86 Rules of the Bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bar at the Roof on Wilshire in West Los Angeles, California

First, a very important message for all my Friends:
PLEASE
DRINK RESPONSIBLY!
GET HOME ALIVE, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!
“KNOW WHEN TO SAY WHEN!”
“FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK!”

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE read these rules!!!

NOTE: We ripped these rules from the interweb.
“Learn it. Know it. Live it.”

1. If you owe someone money, always pay them back in a bar.
Preferably during Happy Hour.

2. Always toast before doing a shot.

3. Whoever buys the shots gets the first chance to offer a toast.

4. Change your toast at least once a month.

5. Buying someone a drink is five times better than a handshake.

The Casino Bar at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada

6. Buying a strange woman a drink is still cool. Buying all her drinks is really dumb.

7. Never bum more than one cigarette from the same person in one night.
NOTE: DON’T SMOKE CIGARETTES!

8. When the bartender is slammed, resist the urge to order a slightly-dirty,
very-dry, in-and-out, super-chilled half-and-half martini with a lemon twist.
Limit orders to beer, straight shots and two-part cocktails.

9. Get the bartender’s attention with eye contact and a smile.

10. DO NOT make eye contact with the bartender if you don’t want a drink.

227200841_2848826085380621_1411489795097638486_n

11. Unacceptable things to say after doing a shot:
“Great, now I’m going to get drunk.”
“I hate shots.”
“It’s coming back up.”

12. NEVER, ever tell your bartender they made your drink too strong.

13. If he makes it too weak, order a double next time. He’ll get the message.

14. If you offer to buy a woman a drink and she refuses, she does not like you.

15. If you offer to buy a woman a drink and she accepts, she still might not like you.

17626236_1750421021651123_3972512772980190229_n

The Bar at the Lakeside Cafe in Encino, California

16. If she buys you a drink, she likes you.

17. If someone offers to buy you a drink, do not upgrade your liquor preference.

18. Always have a corkscrew in your house.

19. If you don’t have a corkscrew, push the cork down into the bottle with a pen.

20. Drink one girly drink in public….
and you will forever be known as the guy who drinks girly drinks.

35870746_2302054819821071_8203050805629026304_n

21. Our parents were better drinkers than we are.

22. Never talk to someone in the restroom unless you’re doing the same thing:
urinating, waiting in line or washing your hands.

23. Girls hang out, apply make-up, and have long talks in the bathroom.
Men do not.

24. After your sixth drink, do not look at yourself in the mirror.
It will shake your confidence.

25. It is only permissible to shout ‘woo-hoo!’
if you are doing a shot with four or more people.

130304124242-big-lebowski-story-top

26. If there is a DJ, you can request a song only once per night.
If he doesn’t play it within half an hour, don’t approach him again.
If he does play it, don’t approach him again.

27. Learn how to make a rose out of a bar napkin.
You’ll be surprised how well it works.

28. If you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to drink in a bar.
Go to the liquor store.

29. If you owe someone twenty dollars or less, you may pay them back in beer.

30. Never complain about the quality or brand of a free drink.

1048525_677793648913871_47626874_o

Drink this.

31. If you have been roommates with someone more than six months,
you may drink all their beer, even if it’s hidden, as long as you leave them one.

32. You can have a shot of their hard liquor
only if the cap has been cracked and the bottle goes for less than $25.

33. The only thing that tastes better than free liquor is stolen liquor.

34. If you bring Old Milwaukee to a party, you must drink at least 2 cans
before you start drinking the imported beer in the fridge.

35. Learn to appreciate hangovers.
If it was all good times every jackass would be doing it.

Altitude Lounge in San Diego, California – Night

36. If you ever feel depressed, get a bartender’s guide
and then browse thru all the drinks you’ve never tried.

37. Try one new drink each week.

38. If you’re the bar’s only customer,
you are obliged to make small talk with the bartender.
Until he stops acknowledging you. Then you’re off the hook.
The same goes for him.

39. Never tip with coins that have touched you.
If your change is $1.50, you can tell the barmaid to keep the change,
but, once she has handed it to you, you cannot give it back.
To a bartender or cocktail waitress, small change has no value.

40. If you have ever told a bartender, “Hey, it all spends the same”
– You are a cheap ass.

The Bar at Kaleidoscope Pizzeria in Medford, Oregon

41. Anyone on stage or behind a bar is fifty percent better looking.

42. You can tell how hard a drinker someone is
by how close they keep their drink to their mouth.

43. A bar is a college, not a nursery. If you spill a beer, clean it up.
If you break a glass, wait for the staff to clean it up, then blame someone else.

44. Being drunk is feeling sophisticated without being able to say it.

45. It’s okay to drink alone.

George Thorogood LIVE – “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”
with Elvin Bishop at the Capitol Theatre on 7/5/1984

46. After three drinks, you will forget a woman’s name right after she tells you.
The rest of the night you will call her “baby” or “darling”.

47. Nothing screams ‘Gay’ louder than swirling an oversized brandy snifter.

48. Men don’t drink from straws. Unless you’re doing a Mind or Face Eraser.

49. If you do a shot, finish it. If you don’t plan to finish it, don’t accept it.

50. Never brood in a dance bar. Never dance in a dive bar.

The Bar at The Brickroom in Ashland, Oregon

51. Never play more than three songs by the same artist in a row.

52. Your songs will come on as you’re leaving the bar. (EVERYTIME!)

53. Never yell out jukebox selections to someone you don’t know.

54. Never lie in a bar. You may, however, grossly exaggerate and lean.

55. If you think you might be slurring a little, then you are slurring a lot.
If you think you are slurring a lot, then you are not speaking English.

funny_tough_lucky_drunk_leprechaun_sticker

56. Screaming, “SOMEONE BUY ME A DRINK!” has never worked.

57. For every drink, there is a 5% better chance you will get in a fight.
There is also a 3% better chance you will lose that fight.

58. Fighting an extremely drunk person when you are sober is HILARIOUS!

59. If you’re broke and a friend is “sporting you”,
you must laugh at all his jokes
and play wingman when he makes his move.

60. If you’re broke and a friend is “ragging on you”,
you may steal any drink he leaves unattended.

The Bar in Hollywood (that is no longer there)

61. Never rest your head on a table or the bar top.
It is the equivalent of voluntarily putting your head on a chopping block.

62. If you are trading rounds with a friend
and he asks if you want another, always say “YES”.
Once you fall out of sync you will end up buying more drinks than him.

63. If you’re going to hit on a member of the bar staff,
make sure you tip well before and after, regardless of her response.

64. The people with the most money are rarely the best tippers.

65. Before you die, single-handedly make one decent martini.

Classic Vodka Martini

228834318_4987623257930867_2767501640300164912_n

whining

66. Asking a bartender “what beers are on tap?”
when the tap handles are right in front of you, is just like saying “I’m an idiot.”

67. Never ask a bartender “What’s good tonight?”
They do not fly Scotch in “fresh from the coast” every morning.

68. If there is a line for drinks at the bar,
get your damn drink and step the hell away.

69. If there is ever any confusion, the fuller beer is yours.

70. The patrons at your local bar are your extended family,
your father, your mother, your brothers and sisters.
Except you get to sleep with these sisters. And if you’re really drunk…. mother.

Poolside Tiki Bar in Las Vegas!

71. It’s acceptable, traditional, in fact, to disappear during a night of hard drinking.
You will mysteriously reappear, and your friends will understand. If they even notice.

72. Never argue your tab at the end of the night.
Remember, you’re hammered, and they’re sober.
It’s like a precocious five-year-old arguing the super-string theory with a physicist.
99.9% of the time you’re wrong and, either way, you’re going to come off as a jackass.

73. If you bring booze to a party, you must drink it or leave it.

74. If you hesitate more than three seconds after the bartender looks at you…..
you do not deserve a drink.

75. Beer makes you mellow, champagne makes you silly,
wine makes you dramatic, and tequila makes you felonious.

filepicker-lNYJU0ySCiEn5ktXU881_tequila
“Jose Cuervo, you are no friend of mine.”

76. The greatest thing a drunk can do is buy a round of drinks for a packed bar.

77. NEVER preface a conversation with your bartender
with “I know this is going to be a hassle, but . . .”

78. When you’re in a bar and drunk,
your boss is just another guy begging for a fat lip. Unless he’s buying.

79. If you are 86’d, do not return for at least three months.
To come back sooner makes it appear no other bar wants you.

80. Anyone with three or more drinks in his/her hands has the right of way.

81. If you’re going to drink on the job, DRINK VODKA.
It’s the no-tell liquor.

82. There’s nothing wrong with drinking before noon.
Especially if you’re supposed to be at work.

83. The bar clock moves twice as fast from midnight to last call.

84. An engraved flask is one of the best gifts you can ever give.
And make sure there’s something in it.

85. On the intimacy scale,
sharing a quiet drink is between a handshake and a kiss.

86. You will forget everyone of of these rules by your fifth drink.

GBTA 2013 Convention in San Diego! (Global Business Travel Association)

17425046_1734680193225206_2974422028337419638_n

NOTE: For ThrowbackThursday and FlashbackFriday we found this Blog draft. We laid out all the type and captions back in 2013 and never added the pics or details. So we went to the files for collateral from the convention, found old travel picture files on our other laptop for pictures that were never seen and also went hunting for the pics that we had already downloaded or posted, then we filled in all the details we could remember and constructed this Blog! And even though the event happened in 2013 we still hope you will enjoy this Blog for TravelTuesday in 2017!

We were invited to attend the GBTA 2013 Convention as a “Hosted Buyer”, but we had prior commitments and could only attend the first and second day of the event. So we made a one-night hotel reservation and arranged to attend the “preview day” on Sunday and the first day on Monday.

Road Trip to San Diego! – Ride along with me!

It was a foggy Sunday morning when we woke up very early and hit the road to San Diego. We left the San Fernando Valley at 7am to avoid traffic and drove south on the 405 and 5 freeways for about three hours. We were successful and drove fast (we also took pictures as we went) but other drivers were driving really fast! We were really amazed at the speed of some of the cars passing us at very high speeds like we were parked.

We arrived in San Diego and found our hotel, the Embassy Suites Downtown, sometime after 9am. We found metered street parking two blocks away from the hotel which was FREE and available because it was Sunday. We walked over to the hotel, had breakfast at the complimentary buffet and got an early check in.

We went up to the room, checked it out and dropped our luggage. We set up the laptop, hooked into the hotel’s wi-fi and did our morning business via the internet and cell phone.

After a short time in the room, we walked over to the Hyatt Regency and caught the Free Shuttle to the Convention Center.

Sunday was a “preview” day, so it was not very crowded, just busy. There were a lot of people checking in and the vendors and staff were making preparations for the week ahead. The Exhibition Hall didn’t open until Monday, but we were invited to the “First-Timers” lunch and the Welcome Party at the Hilton on Sunday evening.

After lunch, we attended the “Going Global” session, walked around the Convention Center and then we walked to the shuttle pickup point, rode the shuttle back to the Hyatt and then walked back to our hotel. We cleaned up and enjoyed a free cocktail and complimentary appetizers at the Embassy Suites’ afternoon Happy Hour downstairs.

NOTE: It was a huge convention! Every hotel in San Diego remotely close to the Convention Center was at capacity and filled with Travel Agents, Vendors, Travel Writers and other attendees from all over the United States and other parts of the world. We commented on the size of the crowd to a staff person at the Convention Center and they just laughed because Comic-Con had been in town the week before and the size of GBTA convention wasn’t even close to the overflow crowd for Comic-Con.

We walked to over to Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Restaurant for the next party. It was a long “Las Vegas” walk just after dark along the Marina and Bayfront to get to Roy’s, but it was worth it! We immediately regretted eating at the Welcome Party Buffet, because there was an amazing assortment of incredible food at Roy’s!

There were all kinds of sushi and cut rolls, egg rolls, chicken and beef satay skewers, Hawaiian style ribs, other tasty appetizers and finger foods, fresh fruit and a lot of fancy desserts. We ate and drank and networked until it got too crowded inside the large restaurant and we didn’t take any pictures (except the one of the kitchen above). We left the party early and took a little food “to go” for later at the hotel. We didn’t want to do anymore walking or make the long dark walk back to the Hilton parking structure, so we negotiated with a pedal cab guy and survived a really fast and wild nighttime ride back to the hotel along the Bayfront for $10+tip.

We walked to our car and drove back to the Embassy Suites. We valet parked our car at the hotel and retired to our hotel room. We did some work, ate the “to go” food (ribs, sushi and little chocolate balls) after midnight and went to bed.

Monday morning, we were up early and we enjoyed the Embassy Suites’ breakfast buffet again. We took the food up to the room, ate and did some more work, and then packed up our stuff, went downstairs and had a second breakfast. After eating again we got our stuff and checked out of the hotel. We picked up the car from the valet, drove to over the Convention Center and paid to park there. Parking was $15 for all day until midnight.

GBTA 2013! – Embassy Suites Hotel Breakfast Buffet (in the room)

We arrived in time and got a pretty good seat for the Keynote Address and Lunch for 6000 people with a presentation and performance by singer/songwriter Jewel. All of the front area tables were “Reserved” so we took a seat at a forward table in the first section behind the front area. The hall at the Convention Center was massive! Lunch for 6000 is not an easy task!

On The Menu: iceberg lettuce salad, bread & butter, stuffed chicken breast with pesto sauce, vegetables, a fruit tart dessert and iced tea.

After lunch they opened the massive Exposition Hall which ran the entire length of the Convention Center and was filled with Vendors and Suppliers. There were also Vendor meetings scheduled for the afternoon. We walked a portion of the Exhibition Hall, collected brochures/information/swag and received invitations to events later on that evening and later in the week. It would have been impossible to cover the whole Exhibition Hall in one day, so we didn’t try. Instead we did what we could between 3-6pm and dropped all the promotional material in our car before beginning the evening activities.

GBTA 2013! – The Gaslamp District Sign in San Diego

The Gaslamp District!
The Historic Heart of San Diego is located across the street and train tracks from the Convention Center. Bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels and plenty of gift shops are within easy walking distance (unless you’ve already walked all day).

Let’s get this party started!
We were invited to eight different parties happening at different locations around the Gaslamp District and the Bayfront near the Convention Center.

Monday Party # 1 – Sunset cocktails and dinner at the Altitude Lounge

Our first invitation was for a party at the Altitude Lounge on top of the Marriott Gaslamp Hotel. We walked over to the Marriott Hotel next door to the Convention Center, but it was the wrong Marriott. So then we walked over to the Gaslamp District and found the right hotel. We ate and drank and watched the sunset from the rooftop patio.

Monday Party #2 –

GBTA 2013! – The Parking Spot Party at Lou & Mickey’s at the Gaslamp

We left the party and walked across the street and crashed The Parking Spot’s party at Lou & Mickey’s restaurant. We ate and drank and met the nice folks from The Parking Spot and told them we crashed their party. They didn’t mind. Their party ended early, and the place emptied as the crowd left for other parties that were just getting started.

Monday Party #3 – GBTA 2013 “AMPED” Party at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego!

GBTA 2013! – Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Guitar at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

We walked over to our next event: the AMPED party at the Hard Rock Hotel! We ate and drank and met a bunch of really nice people. It started slow but soon the crowd at the main bar was five people deep, the music was rockin’ and it got pretty hopping.

This party was on a very large rooftop patio, with several permanent bars, a couch area with fire pits and portable heaters, several floating bars and a bunch of buffet stations with a great selection of food. There was good music, of course, and a stage was set up for performance, but it didn’t get used until later. There was even a photo booth for taking pictures with silly wigs, hats and props.

We asked permission before taking these pics of one of the Go-Go Dancers on a raised pedestal (there were several). She said “Go ahead, I don’t see why not” and posed for the first one. And she was a fantastic dancer too!

Monday Party #4 – Level Skye Club at the Andaz Hotel in San Diego!

GBTA 2013! – The Bar at Level Skye Club at the Andaz Hotel in San Diego

We had one more party to check out or we would have just stayed at the Hard Rock, instead we left the hotel and walked over to Level Skye Club at the Andaz Hotel. We walked a lot and we were wearing our dress shoes, so by the end of the night our feet were really hurting. We were also tired from a long day at the convention and a long night of partying.
When we got to the club the upstairs was deceptively quiet because downstairs in the basement it was raging! The party at Level Skye was really “off-the-hook” with funky dance music and lots of light and a lot of drunk travel agents. Travel industry people love to party! Thanks American Express!

GBTA 2013! – Big Party at Level Skye Club in the Andaz Hotel Basement in San Diego

We didn’t eat or drink anything alcoholic because we still had to walk back to the car and drive home to Los Angeles. So, Monday late night we walked back to the car on sore feet before they closed the Convention Center Garage for the night (at midnight).

GBTA 2013! – San Diego Convention Center Parking ($15 all day – closes at midnight)

We drove back to Los Angeles on the 5 freeway north after midnight and hit a impossible “Stop-and-Go” traffic jam along the way because of construction at 2am in the morning.

When we finally made it home after 3am, we unloaded the car and crashed hard. We had a really good time, did a lot of business and networking, saw Jewel play live music, enjoyed our “budget” stay at the Embassy Suites, and ate and drank and danced and partied in San Diego for two days.

NOTE: We did a lot of walking, a whole lot of walking in our dress shoes, so next time we bring and wear more comfortable walking shoes.

GBTA 2013! – We did not attend GBTA 2014 in Los Angeles

FINAL NOTE: We finished this Blog and hit “PUBLISH” and it did not. WordPress lost the Blog and the draft(s) totally disappeared! We had to use Google Cache to rescue it and then we had to start over and rebuild the original Blog again. Total waste of time. There is a flaw (BUG) in the wordpress program, because when we went looking for help we found that this has happened to other people as well. So, please ENJOY THIS BLOG, a lot of time went into it.

UPDATED Wednesday March 29, 2017 – We posted this Blog yesterday!

We collected a bunch of FREE stuff in the short time we were there, two bags full of stuff actually! Most was promotional “paper”: sell sheets, pamphlets, maps and brochures. But there was some fun giveaway stuff and cool “incentives” for visiting certain booths.

We were given a “Swag” bag at check-in provided/sponsored by Delta and the padded bag was very nice. We recently found it in Storage (see our previous Blog about Storage) and we are now using it as a laptop bag.

UPDATED April 5, 2017 – TRAVEL TIP!
We found these “hospitality cards” (restaurant and bar coupons, freebies, come-ons, etc.) from the San Diego trip. We had so much FREE food and drink and were only in town for one night, so we didn’t use any of them. They can be found at the Concierge Desk at the San Diego Convention Center (and these are just a few of the ones available).

Great game! – Extra time! – Heartbreaking loss! – Belgium wins. Thank you and good night! Tim Howard played an amazing game as Goalkeeper, making 15 saves and keeping the U.S. in it until extra time. Too many opportunities for Belgium and too many missed opportunities for the United States. It was a good run, but now the U.S. is out of the competition. Congratulations Belgium. Good luck against Argentina.
