Gold Record for “Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida” by the Iron Butterfly

Dad was the Iron Butterfly’s manager and attorney.
I played at the band’s ranch in Topanga Canyon when I was little.
I also played piano at the age of five with Herbie Hancock when he stayed at our house.
I was backstage and under the bleachers when Black Oak Arkansas played Circus Circus in Las Vegas in the early 70’s.

Dad managed all of them and other famous artists while we were growing up in Los Angeles. It was not your ordinary childhood.

The band’s seminal 1968 album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is among the world’s 40 best-selling albums, with more than 30 million copies sold. Iron Butterfly is also notable for being the first group to receive an RIAA Platinum Award. It went to #4 on the U.S. charts.

In-a-gadda-da-vida honey,
Don’tcha know that I love you?
In-a-gadda-da-vida baby,
Don’tcha know that I’ll always be true?

Oh won’tcha come with me,
And take my hand?
Oh won’tcha come with me,
And walk this land?

Please take my hand…
Let me tell ya now.
In-a-gadda-da-vida honey,
Don’tcha know that I love you?

In-a-gadda-da-vida baby,
Don’tcha know that I’ll always be true?
Oh won’tcha come with me,
And take my hand?

Oh won’tcha come with me,
And walk this land?
Please take my hand…
Let me tell ya.

Two, three, four!
In-a-gadda-da-vida honey,
Don’tcha know that I love you?
In-a-gadda-da-vida baby,
Don’tcha know that I’ll always be true?

In early 1968, the band’s debut album Heavy was released after signing a deal with ATCO, an Atlantic Records subsidiary. All but Ingle and Bushy left the band after recording the album in late 1967. Faced with the possibility of the record not being released, they quickly found replacements in bassist Lee Dorman and guitarist Erik Brann (also known as “Erik Braunn” and “Erik Braun”) and resumed touring.

I almost went to Woodstock! This was a smash hit record in the Summer of Love 1968. Here’s the story from Wikipedia that I heard when I was growing up:

The band had been booked to play at Woodstock, the manager demanded that the Butterfly be flown in by helicopter, whereupon they would “immediately” take the stage. After their set, they would be paid and flown back to the airport. The manager was told that this would be taken into consideration and he would be called back. In truth, the demands were never given a second thought. Dorman later expressed regret at this turn of events, feeling the band’s career may have gone further had they played the festival. According to drummer Bushy, “We went down to the Port Authority three times and waited for the helicopter, but it never showed up”.

But I always heard that Dad had refused to let the band get on the helicopters unless they were paid first and that’s why we never got to Woodstock….

Here’s the truth. The band’s equipment and lightshow got stuck in the famous New York Throughway traffic jam and never made it to the location. The band was stuck in NYC (and needed a helicopter to get to the festival) and the staff at Woodstock had too many problems to deal with and said “f*ck you”, the helicopter never came and the band did not go to Woodstock.

Iron Butterfly “Ball” 1969

The gold record for this album is on the wall too. It went to #3 on the U.S. charts.

Gold Record for “Ball” by the Iron Butterfly

The next album, Ball, reached number three on the charts and went gold, but more lineup changes followed. In 1970, with Erik Brann gone, Iron Butterfly released their fourth studio album, Metamorphosis with two new members, guitarist/vocalist Mike Pinera (whose Blues Image had opened for the Butterfly’s Vida tour) and guitarist Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt.

“Metamorphosis” – the fourth studio album by Iron Butterfly, released August 13 , 1970.

The album managed to get into the top 20, but Doug Ingle quit the group shortly after its release. Without an organist for the first time in their history, the remaining four members cut a single, “Silly Sally”. It failed to chart and proved to be their last recording. The band broke up after playing a final show on May 23, 1971. Dorman and Reinhardt subsequently founded Captain Beyond.

Captain Beyond – “Captain Beyond” (self-titled) 1972

Captain Beyond was a rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1971. The original line-up was singer Rod Evans, guitarist Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt, bassist Lee Dorman, and drummer Bobby Caldwell. Evans was the original lead singer for Deep Purple best known for his vocals on their 1968 debut chart-breaker “Hush”. Reinhardt and Dorman had played in Iron Butterfly; Dorman, in particular, played on most of Butterfly’s early albums, including their 1968 breakthrough In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Caldwell had come to prominence playing with Johnny Winter.

The Book Find Club (1946)

The Book Find Club (1946)

Found this mailer card in an old book.

Here’s a little history>

The Book Find Club (1946):

In The Cultural Front, Michael Denning identifies the Book Find Club as a Popular Front institution. Its eclectic selection of books in 1946 covered the left side of the political spectrum from New Deal liberal to Stalinist. It also included books by writers not considered particularly political and was heavy on political exposes.
Its founder, George Braziller, fits the profile of the “proletarian intellectual.” He was a decade younger than most of the cohort and forced to drop out of high school in the tenth grade during the Depression. When he started the book club in 1940, he was 24 and working as a shipping clerk. According to an article on book clubs by John K, Hutchens that ran on the front page of the New York Times Book Review on March 31, Braziller’s initial capitalization was $25 and an inventory of remaindered books. By 1946 his club had 70,000 members and his eye for books allowed him to guarantee publishers a sale of 60,000 for the titles he chose, according to Hutchens. He would rent the plates and then manufacture his own editions, keeping costs very low. The article noted that he was offering his May selection, Arthur Schlesinger Jr.’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Age of Jackson to members at $1.35, less than half the price of the Little, Brown trade edition.
The April selection was Theodore Dreiser’s novel The Bulwark about the deleterious effects of material success on a Philadelphia Quaker family. It had been published posthumously. Dreiser was definitely to the left politically and John Howard Lawson, cultural commissar of the Hollywood wing of the Party, claimed to have won his deathbed return to the Communist Party, which he had left some years earlier. This week The Bulwark was on the Times best seller list although most critics agreed it was not the equal of the author’s best works.
Braziller had served in the Army in Europe. According to his later recollections his first postwar choice for the club was Arthur Miller’s novel Focus, the club’s February selection. This story about anti-Semitism was a first novel from Miller, who would soon become a famous playwright. At this time Miller was very active in left-wing cultural groups like Stage For Action. Charles Poore in the above linked New York Times review found the novel more a lecture on Antisemitism than a satisfying work of fiction. The display ad that ran in the Times for the club edition offered new members the additional free choice of one of the other recent club selections. They included:
Cross Section 1945, an anthology edited by Edwin Seaver of previously unpublished novelettes, stories and poems by 35 American authors. Cross Section came out annually between 1943 and 1948. Seaver was also an editor at Direction, a member of the literary left, a writer and advocate of the proletarian novel.
These Are the Russians a sympathetic but balanced profile of the Russian people by Michael Lauterbach, who had been the Time magazine Moscow correspondent in 1943 to 1944 after the Soviet defeat of the German Army. Here is the Time review.
A dual selection of The Folded Leaf, a critically hailed novel by New Yorker editor William Maxwell, identified in the ad as a coming of age story of a “sensitive boy” and Dark Legend, a true story by psychiatrist Frederick Wortham of a 17 year old who murdered his mother. The Folded Leaf is still in print. Wortham was famous for his later attacks on comic books as a cause of violent behavior in impressionable children.
The Plot Against the Peace was a piece of left wing political paranoia by Michael Sayers and Albert E. Kahn that warned that Nazis with friends in high places in the US were setting plans in motion for a third world war that would return them to power in Europe. This scenario was promulgated as fact at many meetings of the Far Left in 1946. This was the Stalinist conspiracy theory to counter the Right Wing conspiracy theory that saw the Communists running the State Department. Essentially it suspected anyone who criticized Stalin or the Soviet Union ‘s foreign policy of being in on the Fascist plot.
An ad that ran in May noted that among the books that had been Book Find selections in the past were:
Strange Fruit, Southern writer Lillian Smith’s controversial 1944 novel about an interracial affair. Jose Ferrer had directed a stage adaptation of the novel that had closed in January after a brief run on Broadway.
Undercover by John Roy Carlson (the pen name of Avedia Derounian) was an expose of anti-Semitism in the isolationist movement. Selections had appeared in several magazines before it was published as a book. Carlson’s investigation had been sponsored by the Friends of Democracy, a church group that sought to expose extremism on both sides of the political spectrum, and the Anti-Defamation League. Carlson had posed as a pro-fascist, anti-Semitic Italian-American and infiltrated a number of America First groups. His book linked the anti-Semites to several isolationist Senators and congressmen who retaliated by demanding that Derounian and the sponsoring groups be investigated as un-American. It was the top non-fiction best seller of 1944. In 1946 writing again as John Roy Carlson, Derounian published The Plotters. His brother Steven Derounian was a conservative Republican congressman from Long Island during the Nixon era and ardent supporter of Barry Goldwater.
George Washington Carver, a biography by Rackham Holt, was an uncritical hagiography that was published in 1943, the year the educator died, and helped enshrine his image in the postwar world.
Argentine Diary: The Inside Story of the Coming of Fascism was by Ray Josephs who had been a gossip columnist and news magazine stringer in Buenos Aires, While living in Argentina, he befriended a young actress, Eva Duarte, who became better known as Evita Peron. He used his inside connections to report on the political turmoil inside this ostensibly neutral country. He later became a prominent PR exec.
The Cross and the Arrow was a 1944 novel by screenwriter Albert Maltz about a Gestapo investigation of a minor act of sabotage in a small German village. In 1946 Maltz would become an unintentional center of controversy among his fellow Communists. In the February issue of New Masses he had written an article meant to be a refutation of the cultural policies of the recently deposed party leader Earl Browder. However, the article seemed to imply that Communist writers should have greater artistic freedom than they had under Browder. This greatly infuriated the rigidly Stalinist Party leadership. Maltz was subjected to a reeducation session conducted by John Howard Lawson and the rest of his Hollywood cell for daring to even suggest such a thing. Fully chastened, he recanted in an article published in both New Masses and the Daily Worker that April. Lawson’s group, including Maltz, became known as the Hollywood Ten when they were dragged before HUAC and then imprisoned for failing to cooperate with the committee.

The Book Find Club was one of many niche book clubs in the Forties that sought to emulate, on a smaller scale. the success of Book-of-the-Month Club and the Literary Guild. Book clubs accounted for much of book sales in 1946, particularly outside the major cities. Their influence extended well beyond their membership since club promotions usually turned their selections into top sellers in bookstores and department stores as well. The Book Find Club was among the more financially successful alternative clubs. In 1948 it had a big hit with Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead.

In 1955 Braziller, having sold the club to Time-Life, went on to found George Braziller Inc., a highly prestigious publishing firm known particularly for its books on art and architecture and for the acclaimed international writers in its stable.

Janis Joplin’s Porsche 356c Cabriolet in the Lobby of the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live

Janis Joplin purchased a used 1964 Porsche 356c Cabriolet for $3500 from Beverly Hills car dealer Estes-Zipper in 1968. She paid Dave Richards, one of her roadies, $500 to give the Porsche a psychedelic face lift. Completed in one month and titled “The History of the Universe.” The car and its paint job (a base coat of Candy Apple Red with portraits of Big Brother and the Holding Company, her astrological sign Capricorn, “The Eye of God” design on the hood, butterflies, jellyfish and a Northern California scene on the side doors) became one of the most recognizable vehicles in San Francisco.

The Porsche was stolen in 1969 and partially repainted before being found.  When the stolen car was recovered, the paint job was restored because they were able to remove the new paint from the clearcoat with little damage to the original artwork underneath.

Janis Lyn Joplin aka “Pearl” RIP (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970)

After Janis’ death in 1970, the car was used by her manager Albert Grossman. And then in 1973 ownership of the car went to her siblings, Michael and Laura Joplin in Ohio, who shared it for about 30 years. Michael rebuilt the original engine and returned the car to the original dolphin gray color (although some say it was originally oyster white). Working from photographs, artists Jana Mitchell and Amber Owen, restored Dave’s original artwork in 1990 and the 4-speed manual transmission was rebuilt and restored. The family loaned the Porsche to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Janis was inducted in 1995 and it was exhibited in museums until 2015. We saw it and took the above photograph in the Lobby of the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live in Los Angeles in 2013 (see our previous Blog).

NOTE: Dec. 10, 2015 – A 1964 Porsche 356 that once belonged to the rock singer Janis Joplin sold at auction for $1.76 million (the highest price ever paid for any Porsche 356 at auction). The car had been expected to sell for between $400,000 and $600,000. The sale price includes a 10% commission for Sotheby’s auction house. According to the family, the proceeds from the auction will be used to support social programs in Janis’s memory.

“Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.”

Sotheby’s did not say who bought Janis’ car and the buyer has not come forward.

READ THIS! Former National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis’ message regarding Trump:

READ THIS!

560709_10150644239038429_1556594351_n
From the Association of National Park Rangers (US)
Former National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis’ message regarding Trump:
16265304_10154671974088429_5576860841048156140_n

This morning former Director Jon Jarvis made this statement about recent events involving the National Park Service:

“I have been watching the Trump administration trying unsuccessfully to suppress the National Park Service with a mix of pride and amusement. The NPS is the steward of America’s most important places and the narrator of our most powerful stories, told authentically, accurately, and built upon scientific and scholarly research. The Park Ranger is a trusted interpreter of our complex natural and cultural history and a voice that cannot not be suppressed. Edicts from on-high have directed the NPS to not talk about “national policy”, but permission is granted to use social media for visitor center hours and safety. The ridiculousness of such a directive was immediately resisted and I am not the least bit surprised. So at Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta should we not talk about his actions to secure the rights to vote for African Americans in the south, or is that too “national policy”? At Stonewall National Monument in New York City, shall we only talk about the hours you can visit the Inn or is it “national policy” to interpret the events there in 1969 that gave rise to the LGBT movement? Shall we only talk about the historic architecture of the Washington, DC home of Alice Paul and Alva Belmont or is it too “national policy” to suggest their decades of effort to secure the rights of women can be linked directly to the women’s marches in hundreds of cities last weekend? And as we scientifically monitor the rapid decline of glaciers in Glacier National Park, a clear and troubling indicator of a warming planet, shall we refrain from telling this story to the public because the administration views climate change as “national policy”? These are not “policy” issues, they are facts about our nation, it is how we learn and strive to achieve the ideals of our founding documents. To talk about these facts is core to the mission of the NPS. During the Centennial of the National Park Service, we hosted over 300 million visitors (now that is huge) to the National Parks and most came away inspired, patriotic and ready to speak on behalf of the values we hold most dear. The new Administration would be wise to figure out how to support the National Park Service, its extraordinary employees and their millions of fans.”

NOTE: A freeze on federal government hiring was instituted on January 24, 2017 by executive order. The memo, which does not apply to military personnel, states that “no vacant positions existing at noon on January 22, 2017, may be filled and no new positions may be created, except in limited circumstances”

Trump put a freeze on federal government hiring, and it could seriously impact the National Park Service and the need to hire thousands of seasonal rangers and other employees for the summer! Beyond seasonal positions, there are many permanent positions that parks are trying to fill and people who have already been offered permanent jobs but haven’t begun working… this will definitely affect the visitor experience and park safety!

“O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties. Above the fruited plain!
America! America! G-d shed his grace on thee.”
– America the Beautiful
from a poem written by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893
(after a visit to Pikes Peak in Colorado)
music composed by Samuel A. Ward

Pikes Peak, named in honor of American explorer Zebulon Pike, is one of the highest summit of the Rocky Mountains in North America. The 14,115-foot mountain top is located in Pike National Forest, 12 miles southwest of downtown Colorado Springs. The summit of Pikes Peak is a high alpine environment with a polar climate due to its elevation. Snowfall is possible year round at the top and thunderstorms are common in the summertime. Pikes Peak, above 14000 feet, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

This Blog is about the magical Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire at Black Point Forest, Novato, in Marin County, California, just north of San Francisco, in the early to late 1980’s, produced by The Living History Centre (LHC) and the College of Renaissance Delights).

We have written about the Renaissance Faire before. You can read the previous Blogs “Phyllis Patterson RIP She Changed My Life” and “Return to the Paramount Ranch”, (and see pictures of) the old Southern Faire Site in Agoura.

“Make Ye Way! Make Ye Way!”

In 1582, journeyman monger Eric Bacon left his home in Chipping-under-Oakwood and joined Nicholas Worthington’s Company-of-Foote mercenary soldiers. He went to Flanders to fight the Spanish and on his return to the Shire he faithfully served her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth for two more years (1583-84) as a Royal Guard and Chair Bearer during the Queen’s Progress through the annual Harvest Faire. “G-d Save The Queen!”

Eric Bacon left Worthington’s Company-of-Foote honorably after the 1584 Harvest Faire. He joined The Fool’s Guild, became a follower of St. Stupid, and also “served” as the Lord Mayor’s Fool. For several years he was often seen walking the streets and wandering throughout the Shire after dark looking for trouble. He mysteriously vanished into the Woods of Holly in 1588, never to be seen again.

In Spring of 1980 we were introduced to the fun of working at the annual Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Southern California by an older high school friend. In late summer of 1981, we began “carpool” commuting each weekend from Los Angeles to Marin County to visit and work at the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire at Black Point, Novato in Summer (and still working at the Southern Faire in Spring) as a street actor.

Costume Crew

In 1982, we were first hired as an hourly CREW employee by the Costume Department for a promotional fashion show at the Old Globe Theatre in West Hollywood. We worked for the CREW Costume Department and continued to perform as a street actor first with the Mongers, and then with the Company-of-Foote, at the Northern Faire until 1985 when we began working for the Security Department as well as Costumes.

When we moved to Santa Cruz for college we commuted to both the Northern and Southern Faire (and also the Dickens’ Christmas Fair at the Fox Theatre in Oakland and Pier 45 in San Francisco) and we continued working for Living History Centre Security and Costume Departments until we graduated. We moved to Novato after college and worked the Northern Faire one more season in 1988, before moving back to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood. We continued to work Security at the Southern Renaissance Faire until 1994. We worked as a Walking Guard, Night Security, a Walking Lieutenant, Mobile Security (during the week on the Northern Lot in 1987), and then as Night Security and as the Front Gate Lieutenant after the Southern Faire moved from the Paramount Ranch in Agoura to Glen Helen Regional Park in Devore (San Bernadino), California in 1990.

Living History! Live Interactive Street Theatre! Hundreds of Costumed Performers!
The centerpiece of the the Northern Renaissance Faire was the daily parade, the “Queen’s Progress Through The Shire” to the Ben Johnson Stage for “The Queen Show” at 3pm each afternoon. Beginning at the Red Barn in the “Front of Faire”, Queen Elizabeth and her retainers would be joined by the Town Criers, the ER Band, the Nobles from the Royal Court, the Scots, the Irish, the Germans and the Guild of St. Cuthbert’s. Queen Elizabeth would be carried in “the Tudor Sedan” and guarded by the Company-of-Foote through the dense crowd to the stage. After the stage show, the Queen would continue with the parade to another destination within the Faire and/or return to the Red Barn staging area. On a few rare occasions we carried the Queen all the way through the Fairesite to “The End of The World” Alestand and back.

Guardshack – Black Point Forest, Novato (Dario took this pic)

This was written for the original fb photo album a few years ago:
“RPFN early 80s – I’m not sure how it happened but I blame Pugsly. I’m marching in the parking lot at Blackpoint dressed in blue and carrying a pike wheeling to the left and right. It’s hot. It’s dusty. How did this happen to me at the Faire? So I marched with the company ’82-’84? I was a rear wheel on the Tudor Sedan for the hottest summer in history (actually two years). Rory and I both agreed that there’s no better workout at the Faire than carrying the Queen from the Red Barn to the End of The World and back in 100 degree heat! For my time with the Company-of-Foote, I must admit it was a great time with great people and lots of great fun (from what I can remember). So for those who were there, THANK YOU! For those who came later or missed the party, here are some pics I collected from others. And for those who are no longer with us, you are missed and remembered by your friend and comrades in arms.” – JoshWillTravel

Many more of our dear Friends from the Renaissance Pleasure Faire have gone on to “Sky-Faire” too soon! We remember them all and there are too many to list here!

The “Neenster” wouldn’t be happy if we did a Blog about Northern Faire and didn’t include this amazing picture. It was taken at Monday Brunch on the lot while we were waiting for steak & eggs (as Reggie and Michael look on).

NOTE: FULL DISCLOSURE! None of the pictures in this Blog post are mine! (Well, okay there are a couple…) They were ripped from the interweb over the years to remind us of the past and now have been used to illustrate our story. Not all of the pics are from the 1983-84 period, again they are used with “artistic license” to visually tell the tale. They are included for educational purposes only and not for commercial gain. BIG THANKS to all the photographers, if you want credit pm me. Also, as a member of the Costume CREW, these pictures are a part of my professional resumé as well as my personal history.

Updated May 21, 2020: (thank you Jason)

Company of Foote was an old pike unit that had cashed in its pikes for muskets,
and gone tear-assing
around the low country looking for the shit.
They’ve given Spanish a few surprises in their time here.
What they were mopping up now
hadn’t even happened an hour ago.

PARTY AT GROUND ZERO!

PARTY AT GROUND ZERO!
written by Angelo Moore, Kendall Jones and John Norwood Fisher of Fishbone in 1985

maxresdefault.jpg

FISHBONE!

Fishbone! “Party At Ground Zero” music video directed by Henry Selick in 1985:

And Fishbone “Party At Ground Zero” LIVE at Fenders Ballroom, Long Beach, CA in 1987:

The song is about “Dancing around Armageddon” and having a good time without worry or concern….

Party at ground zero – A “B” movie starring you
And the world will turn to flowing – Pink vapor stew!
Johnny, go get your gun, for the commies are in our hemisphere today
Ivan, go fly your MIG, for the Yankee imperialists have come to play
Johnny goes to Sally’s house to kiss her goodbye
But Daddy says to spend the night
They make love ’till the early morning light
For tomorrow Johnny goes to fight
Johnny, Ivan, Ian, everybody come along for our nations need new heroes
Time to sing a new war song
[CHORUS]
Please do not fear ’cause Fishbone is here to say (say what?)
Just have a good time the stop sign is far away
The toilet has flushed and green lights are a ghost
And drop drills will be extinct
Speedracer cloud has come
They know not what they’ve done
Sin has just won
The planet is a crumb…
[CHORUS]

The term “Ground Zero” is generally used to mean the point directly above or below the earth’s surface closest to the detonation when a nuclear explosion takes place. The term is also used to mark the point of the most severe damage or destruction.

Inauguration Day has taken place on January 20 every year following a presidential election since 1937. Trump is scheduled to be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on January 20, 2017 around noon on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol. The president-elect and vice president-elect will both take the Oath of Office, followed by the inaugural address and the presidential procession and inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House.

The United States Capitol in Washington D.C.

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
– The Oath of Office of the President of the United States (as mandated by the United States Constitution in Article II, Section One, Clause 8)

More than 50 House Democrats are planning to boycott the inauguration in Washington D.C. after Trump’s divisive campaign, and most recently his twitter attack this week on civil rights activist Congressman John Lewis (after he called Trump’s victory illegitimate due to Russian interference in the election). And 200,000+ people are also expected in the city the day after for the Women’s March on Washington to protest Trump’s election.

Trump is scheduled to be sworn in on January 20, 2017

Our Thoughts on Trump’s Inauguration:

The President of the United States is the head of state and head of government elected by the citizens (well, actually the Electoral College) of the United States of America to a four year term of office. The president directs the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces the most expensive military (with the second largest nuclear arsenal) in the world.

NOTE: During the Cold War, a snack bar that used to be located in the open space in the center of the Pentagon was nicknamed “Cafe Ground Zero, the deadliest hot dog stand in the world.” Soviet satellites saw groups of military officers entering and exiting the hot dog stand at about the same time every day. They concluded that the stand was the entrance to an underground bunker.

“Rumor has it that during the Cold War the Russians never had any less than two missiles aimed at this hot dog stand. They thought this was the Pentagon’s most top secret meeting room, and the entire Pentagon was a large fortress built around this hot dog stand. They thought the officers were going to get their top secret briefings in a protected area, but really they were just going to get lunch” – Brett Eaton, an information and communications officer for Washington Headquarters Services

Cafe Ground Zero was torn down in 2006 and a new building was built in its place. The Pentagon was declared a national historic landmark in 1992 and the courtyard is one of five historically protected features of the building. The hot dog stand was replaced by a modern building of roughly the same size and exactly the same shape.

Construction of the Pentagon was completed in approximately 16 months at a total cost of $83 million. Ground was broken September 11, 1941 and the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943. The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

Designed by American architect George Bergstrom (1876–1955), the building is 77 ft tall, and each of the five sides of the building is 921 ft long  with a five-acre central plaza. It has five floors above ground and two basement levels. One of the world’s largest office buildings, the total square footage is about 6,500,000 square feet. More than half, 3,700,000 square feet is office space. The concentric rings are designated “A” through “E” from the center out with additional “F” and “G” rings in the basement. “E” Ring offices have the outside view and are generally occupied by senior officials. Supposedly, it’s possible for a person to walk between any two points in the Pentagon in less than seven minutes.

The Pentagon After 9/11

On September 11, 2001, exactly 60 years after the building’s construction began, American Airlines Flight Flight 77 (from Washington Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport) was hijacked and deliberately flown into the west side of the Pentagon at 9:37am, killing 189 people according to the official report. 59 civilians and 5 terrorists on the airplane were killed, as were 70 civilians and 55 military personnel in the building. The damaged sections of the Pentagon were rebuilt in 2002 and the occupants moved back in August. The Americas Heroes Memorial and a chapel opened in 2002 and is located where Flight 77 crashed into the building. The Memorial is open seven days a week, year-round and is the only place at the Pentagon where photography is permitted.

Armageddon as it is written in the Book of Revelation (the last book of the Bible’s New Testament) is the prophesied location of the gathering of armies for a final battle during the end times. According to the Book of Revelation, the purpose of this gathering of kings in the “place called Armageddon” is “for the war of the great day of G-d, the Almighty.” Also called the “Revelation to John” or the “Apocalypse” it is interpreted as either a literal or a symbolic location. The term is also used to refer to any “end of the world” scenario and the climax of the ongoing struggle between good and evil.

NOTE: In religion and theology, a revelation is the revealing or disclosing of some form of truth or knowledge through communication with a deity or other supernatural entity.
