Gathering at the MainStage Clearing

On Sunday we went out to the Paramount Ranch in Agoura, California for the annual Renaissance Faire Reunion and it was a beautiful day!

We saw old friends and walked the site.

We uploaded about 200 new pics of people and places from the past and from our Sunday adventure. Everything was very green! It was cloudy and then clear, so there are a lot of great pics from the gathering.

We said hello to our friends as we walked up the hill and almost at the same time the musicians began to play old Faire songs while others grouped around them and began to sing along.

Billy and Richard announced that they had created “Friends of the Paramount Ranch”

The “Friends of Paramount Ranch” is now a non-profit under Ernie Fishbach’s corporate umbrella and the Park Service wants to add the history of the Ren Faire to the official Paramount Ranch history (or something like that, watch the video – contact Billy Scudder or Richard Beard for all the details if you want to volunteer)

NOTE: There was some action, and then they went dark. Not sure what is happening with “Friends of the Paramount Ranch” as of February 11, 2018.

HAAPPY SAAINT PAATRICK’S DAAY!

HAAPPY SAAINT PAATRICK’S DAAY!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! MARCH 17th is always St. Patrick’s Day!

“Wherever you go and whatever you do,
May the luck of the Irish be there with you.”

“Here’s to being single… Drinking doubles… And seeing triple!”

First, a very important message for all my Friends:
PLEASE
DRINK RESPONSIBLY!
GET HOME ALIVE, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!
“KNOW WHEN TO SAY WHEN!”
“FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK!”

“May the rocks in your field turn to gold.”

Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebration held on March 17, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (385–461), the patron saint of Ireland.

irish-flag

“May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rains fall soft upon your fields.”

Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast holy day in the early 17th century and is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival!

“May the leprechauns be near you,
To spread luck along your way.
And may all the Irish angels,
Smile upon your St. Patrick’s Day.”

shamrock-irish-dance-clipart-cliparthut-free-clipart-VyiX8l-clipart

“Here’s to a sweetheart, a bottle, and a friend.
The first beautiful, the second full, the last ever faithful.”

“To all the days here and after
May they be filled with fond memories, happiness, love and laughter.”

Historically, religious restrictions (due to Lent) on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for Saint Patrick’s Day, which led the holiday’s tradition of alcohol consumption.

Holiday celebrations involve going to church, public parades & festivals, parties known as cèilidhs, consumption of alcohol, drinking green beer and/or Irish whiskey with friends, prominent displays and “the wearing of the green” and/or shamrocks (three and four leaf clovers).

“May you taste the sweetest pleasures that fortune ere bestowed,
and may all your friends remember all the favors you are owed.”

“May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty.”

“Four blessings upon you…
Older whiskey, Younger women, Faster horses, More money”

Fresh beer

“It is better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow
than to spend tonight like there’s no money!”

Saint Patrick’s Day has become an International Holiday with parades and celebrations around the world. They get drunk in Tokyo, Japan too!

“May your mornings bring joy
and your evenings bring peace…
May your troubles grow less
as your blessings increase!”

“A bird with one wing can’t fly.” (So have another drink!)

The Notre Dame Leprechaun is the official mascot of the Fighting Irish sports club at the University of Notre Dame since 1965. It was designed by artist Theodore W. Drake for $50 in 1964.

The Fighting Irish logo is a side view of The Leprechaun with his fists up, ready to fight. The live version is a student dressed in a cutaway green suit and Irish country hat. He carries a shillelagh (a wooden club), leads cheers, interacts with the crowd and supposedly brings magical powers and good luck to the team. (“RUDY! RUDY! RUDY!”)

Lead to the happiest heights
And the highway you travel
Be lined with green lights.”

March 2017!

“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” – Thomas Fuller, 1732

March is the third month of the year.
The name comes from Mars, the Roman G-d of War.

Astrologically speaking, in March,
Leo (the Lion) is the rising zodiac sign and by April, it’s Aries (the Goat).

12801377_1326055424087687_3426608033148370077_n

The saying is simply an observation of the common seasonal pattern: March is the transition between winter and summer, usually starting with stormy weather and becoming mild later.

MARCH (verb or noun): walk in a military manner with a regular measured tread
synonyms: walk, hike, trek, tramp, slog, troop, stride, step, pace, tread, trudge, tromp, parade, file, process (see our previous Blog “The Company-of-Foote”)

Mario V. RIP

Rest in Peace Mario.
He danced at my wedding! He was the Life of the Party and so full of life. I love this pic! He wasn’t afraid to be “that guy” and he always had a good time and made sure the people around him did too. He loved to make people laugh! Always a joke, or a story, or a “Don Rickles” insult to make someone smile.
And Mario and Virginia were always there for their friends for as long as I’ve known them (35 years). My deepest condolences to the whole family.
May the Four Winds blow him safely home.

Obituary of Mario Veneroso (with just a little editing)
Mario Louis Veneroso (1958 – 2017) of Simi Valley, beloved husband, father, brother, friend and mentor to so many, has gone on to eternal rest. Originally from Garden Grove, California, Mario was a skilled engineer, photographer, scuba diver and trail-blazer. He loved good scotch and to be in nature, especially Yosemite. He was generous with all he had (especially humor) and his advice was sought and valued by those who knew him. He has gone to join his mother and father, Mary and Mario, and his brother, Matthew. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, his children, Christina, Nicholas, and Teresa, and his siblings, Michele, Marc, and Martin. Funeral services are on Friday, March 10th. If you cannot join, please feel free to raise a glass in his honor.

NOTE: We had a really good time at New Years Party and it was great to see everyone, having a “last chance” with an old friend (without knowing it) makes it seem bittersweet. And then he blocked me on facebook because of politics (he was a Trump supporter) which is “just like Mario”…….  two old friends in two weeks, tell them you love them now.

Leprecauns are Irish fairies usually seen as little red-bearded men, wearing green coats and hats, who enjoy practical jokes and mischief. They are solitary creatures who make and mend shoes and have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If captured, they often grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom.

There were 15 groups represented and information tables with sign up sheets, petitions, and stuff for sale (donations). Lots of people were gathered both as participants and spectators. It was very reminiscent of Santa Cruz in the 1980’s.

Is it expensive to island hop in Hawaii? In a word: YES.

Q: Is it expensive to island hop? My fiance and I are coming to the big island for a work trip for 3 days and are looking to extend our trip a couple days. Is it expensive to fly from the big island to Maui? ~ Katie C., Huntington Beach, CA

A: Yes Katie, it is expensive to island hop in Hawaii.

Consider not only the cost in money (airfare, bag fees, transfers, tips, etc.), but in time. Inter-Island travel time is short, but you’ll lose a day at the airport, getting a rental car and checking in to a new hotel.

There’s so much to do on the The Big Island Hawaii:

Watch the sunrise/sunset from the top of Mauna Kea. You can go skiing if there’s snow (and then head for the beach afterwards).

Spend a whole day at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park! Visit the Kīlauea Volcano. Try a tasting at the Volcano Winery, buy a bottle of wine and drive through the lava fields to where the molten lava spills into the ocean. Have dinner at Hawaii Volcano House Hotel and/or stay overnight with a view of the crater.

Drive around the island and visit the green sand beaches at South Point in Kalae, the southern most point in the United States. There are lots of places to stop, eat and shop along the way.

Hike Akaka Falls State Park home of two majestic waterfalls and lush tropical gardens. Visit Rainbow Falls and see historic Hilo.

Rainbow Falls - Hilo, Hawaii (copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Rainbow Falls – Hilo, Hawaii (copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Snorkel Keauhou Bay and and other spots along the Kona coast, you might get to swim with endangered sea turtles.

Visit the Waipio Valley and “cowboy country”. Have a steak dinner. Go horseback riding. There are lots of places to visit, eat, shop, etc.

Snorkel Honaunau Bay and visit Pu’uhonua O Honaunau Park.

Take a snorkel cruise to the Captain Cook Monument or go whale/dolphin/manta ray watching. Go to a Luau w/dinner & entertainment.

A beautiful Waikoloa sunset on the Big Island of Hawaii (copyright 2010 Joshua Weisel)

Visit some of the other amazing Resort Hotels! Hilton Waikoloa Village, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, etc. See Petroglyphs, tropical gardens, art, etc. for free.

These are just a few suggestions, there is so much to do and see on the Big Island Hawaii (you wouldn’t be able to do it all in three days if you weren’t working) that isn’t on this list. And of course, take time to just relax and DO NOTHING. Lay on the beach or by the pool and sip umbrella drinks, that’s an essential part of the Hawaiian experience.

NOTE: You can also spend a week on Maui and not see everything, so consider visiting another island on a return trip.

Dinner at Gyoro Gyoro Izakaya Japonaise Encino

Dinner at Gyoro Gyoro Izakaya Japonaise Encino

We were going for dinner tonight at Sushi Hirosuke and instead found this sad news taped to the door:

Gyoro Gyoro (copyright 2104 JoshWillTravel)

Sad News! Sushi Hirosuke RIP (copyright 2104 JoshWillTravel)

My friend Hiro, the sushi chef, opened this place in the early 90s and we used to have dinner here twice a week. He sold it to a nice couple who ran it for a long time. It was a good place, not great, but it was reasonably priced, local, and always good enough.

My friend Hiro-san now owns the amazingly awesome Sushi Ichiban Kan in Tarzana (you can read about it and see the pictures in my previous blogs).

There’s a lot of sushi competition in the neighborhood! On Ventura Boulevard, between Sepulveda and Reseda, there are more than fourteen sushi restaurants: Katsu-ya, Midori, Yamato, Benihana’s, Okamura, Cho Cho San, Dancing Wasabi, Octopus, Four on Six, Sushi Ajito, Crazy Tokyo, Sushi Tsune, Makoto, and our new destination for dinner Gyoro Gyoro Izakaya Japonaise Encino.

Upstairs in the mall where they shot “The 40 Year Old Virgin” is a new Japanese restaurant. I had heard nice things about it, but this was my very first time dining there. Ride the escalator or elevator to the third floor, enter the restaurant and enjoy the asian food and drink experience.

The Restaurant!

Tuesday at 7pm, the place was empty. When you enter through the restaurant you are greeted at the Host Desk by the Giant Face seen below.  There’s a glass enclosed covered patio with a nice view of Ventura Blvd, the Sushi Bar area and a Dining Room area. We sat inside in a booth, which was too low for the table, wasn’t very comfortable for my back, and felt very cramped and claustrophobic. I did have a view of the glass enclosed kitchen, but could only see the grill from where I was seated.

It’s a very pretty restaurant, done in very modern Japanese design. We were seated, greeted and provided with drinks while we perused the menu and decided on our food choices. They have a massive menu with sushi, salads, rolls, entrees, sides, and desserts….and it’s very confusing. They also have an ala carte sushi and sushi roll menu and a yakitori menu with all kinds of traditional (chicken, beef, vegetables) and weird things (intestines, livers, and other parts) grilled on a skewer. Mark those menus with a pencil.

The prices are VERY REASONABLE!!! You can eat a lot of different things, share them, try stuff you might never try if you feel adventurous, and just have a really big meal Japanese meal for a good price. The drink prices are also GREAT!

ON THE MENU: hot sake, cucumber with sesame sunomono, grilled shishito pepper, avocado & negitoro (spicy tuna), fried calamari, spicy tuna roll, Wisconsin roll (salmon and crab), sushi – salmon, yellowtail and albacore, potstickers, chicken meatball and pork kalbi skewers and an iced green tea. We also ordered the live Uni pasta, roasted eggplant side, and a big Spicy Tuna and Rice bowl (we asked for brown rice, but got steamed white rice instead).

Everything was good! The fish was good quality, fresh and tasty. The cooked stuff was also done right. The fried calamari was excellent! I also enjoyed the spicy tuna dishes quite a bit. The avocado and negitoro was a good choice. Next time I’ll have the pork kalbi salted instead of sauced and forget about the cucumber and sesame sunomono.

They’re open late weeknights, and really late on Fridays and Saturdays, so I might have to go back soon….
