The 145th Kentucky Derby 2019

The 145th Kentucky Derby – May 4, 2019
“May the Fourth Be With You!”

ky-derby

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race for three-year-old thoroughbreds, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May. The race is one and a quarter miles at Churchill Downs.  The race is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” for its approximate duration, and is also called “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winning horse.

“I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May….”

Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky, USA
Horse racing in Kentucky began in 1789, at the first race course in Lexington.
In 1875, Churchill Downs “Home of the Kentucky Derby” opened in Louisville.
The Kentucky Derby is the  longest continually running sporting event in the USA.
The racetrack occupies 147 acres and features a one-mile dirt racetrack and a seven furlong turf racetrack.

The Twin Spires, the symbol of the racetrack, on top the grandstands, are the most recognizable architectural feature of Churchill Downs. The spires were built in 1895, designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez.

“The sun shines bright on my ol’ Kentucky home….”
“My Old Kentucky Home” became the official state song of Kentucky in 1928.
In 1986 the word “darkies” was changed to “people”.

RUN FOR THE ROSES
Jerry Garcia

Run, run, run for the roses
Quicker it opens, the sooner it closes
Man, oh, man, oh, friend of mine
All good things in all good time
Reach for the sun, catch hold of the moon
They’re both too heavy but what can you do?
Reach for the stars, smack into the sky
You don’t want to live but you’re chicken to die
Oh, you’re chicken to die
Run, run, run for the roses
Quicker it opens, the sooner it closes
Man, oh, man, oh, friend of mine
All good things in all good time
Run for the money, caught short on the rent
Big ideas but the cash’s all spent
The trouble with love is its other face
You just want the club but you don’t want the race
No, you don’t want the race
Run, run, run for the roses
Quicker it opens, the sooner it closes
Man, oh, man, oh, friend of mine
All good things in all good time

THE RACE IS ON
Don Rollins

I feel tears wellin’ up
Cold and deep inside
Like my heart’s sprung a big break
And a stab of loneliness sharp and painful
That I may never shake
Now, you might say that I was takin’ it hard
Since you wrote me off with a call
But don’t you wager that I’ll hide the sorrow
When I may break right down and bawl
Now the race is on
And here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are goin’ to the inside
My tears are holdin’ back
They’re tryin’ not to fall
My heart’s out of the runnin’
True love’s scratched for another’s sake
The race is on and it looks like heartache
And the winner loses all
One day I ventured in love
Never once suspectin’
What the final result would be
How I lived in fear of wakin’ up each mornin’
And findin’ that you’re gone from me
There’s ache and pain in my heart
For today was the one I hated to face
Somebody new came up to win her
And I came out in second place

The Mint Julep, an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint and a sugar syrup, is the traditional beverage of the race. The historic drink can be served in an ice-frosted silver julep cup, but most Churchill Downs patrons sip theirs from souvenir glasses (first offered in 1939 and available in revised form each year since) printed with all previous Derby winners. Also, Burgoo, a thick stew of beef, chicken, pork and vegetables, is a popular Kentucky dish served at the Derby.

“I must….descant a little upon the mint-julep, as it is, with the thermometer at 100 degrees F., one of the most delightful and insinuating potations that ever was invented, and may be drunk with equal satisfaction when the thermometer is as low as 70 degrees.”
–
Captain Frederick Marryat’s diary (1838)

Derby Day! Have a Mint Julep!

HOT TIP:
Watch the Horses! (from the Churchill Downs website)

As with any athlete, physical appearances are an important factor in sizing up competition. Horse racing is no different, and what your eyes tell you about the horse can be a helpful tool in betting. Here’s just a few tips on what to look for as the horses come into the Paddock, but remember that, like your mom always said, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” It’s difficult to make judgments based solely on appearance.

  1. Ears – If the horse’s ears are pricked, meaning they are large and pointed up, and its head is high and confident, you can assume that the horse is alert, aware of their surroundings, and ready to race. You don’t want to bet on a horse that’s ears are flattened back, or hanging its head low and inattentive.
  2. Hair – Like humans, a good hair day goes a long way! While the horses are in the Paddock, take a good look at their hair. A nice shiny coat is an indication that the horse is in good condition; it’s a general sign of the horse’s health and well-being.
  3. Muscle Definition – Most super-star athlete have prominent muscles and horses are no different. Be sure to look for nice, toned muscles around the horse’s chest and rib cage area. You want to bet on a horse that has defined muscles near their rib cage, and isn’t overweight or carrying too much fat.
  4. Nerves – It’s natural to have some nerves before competition, but over anxious horses aren’t necessarily a good bet. Look at the horse’s behavior in the paddock, and look closely at the sweat on his/her coat. If the horse is too fidgety or sweating too much, then the horse may be wasting too much energy before it has even hit the racetrack.

Other Factors to Consider:
The odds of winning, race history, work-outs, the jockey, the trainer, expert advice, statistical records, post position, track condition, weather, and even the horse’s birthdate.

Have Fun!

Not every wager has to be a brain teaser! Plenty of fans win big by randomly picking a horse. Some people choose their lucky number, others draw a number out of a hat, and some select their favorite color jockey silk or favorite horse name. There are lots of fun ways to handicap a horse race, so choose the best method that works for you!

CURRENT ODDS: The Patriots are favored by 2-1/2 points, with an Over-Under of 56.5

The Patriots have not scored a touchdown in the first quarter in 8 previous Super Bowl appearances! New England has only scored 3 first-quarter points in the 8 previous Super Bowl games! They have been shut out in the first-quarter every Super Bowl except for last year against the Philadelphia Eagles, when they kicked a field goal.

C.J. Anderson, the Rams star Runningback, has an old tendency to fumble under pressure. Jared Goff is the youngest Quarterback to play in the big game. Will “Super Bowl Nerves” be a major factor in the Rams’ game play?

NOTE: This game is billed as a rematch of Super Bowl XXXVI, played in 2002.
First-year quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots upset the St. Louis Rams quarterbacked by Kurt Warner 20-17 at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1) Take A Knee protest = Cops please stop killing unarmed African Americans,
2) Racist NFL owners won’t hire Colin Kaepernick as QB for starting the protest,
3) Racist propaganda targeting Colin Kaepernick hits the internet,
4) Nike hires Colin Kaepernick and angry racists burn Nike merchandise
Trump condemned Colin Kaepernick and other players joining the protest, incorrectly claiming they are protesting the national anthem and the American flag…
the discussion is over. The persecution is RACIST. The belittling of an African-American sports figure for political gain based in hatred is what this is about. Dividing the country is what this is about. Hate for a person of color is what this is about. That’s all.

“THE FIX IS IN!” Rams-Saints Pass Interference “No-Call”
“whenever officiating is part of any kind of discussion post-game, it’s never a good outcome for us.” ~ NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (10 days after the game)

USATSI_12030881_168384135_lowres_0

Rams – Saints Pass Interference “No-Call” on January 20, 2019

The NFL’s Senior VP of Officiating Al Riveron spoke to New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton after the game and said that pass interference should have been called against Rams’ defenseman Nickell Robey-Coleman for the early hit on Saints’ receiver Tommylee Lewis. Robey-Coleman was fined for an illegal hit, but Commissioner Roger Goodell did not overturn the result of the game or order all or part of the game to be replayed.

“Listen, we understand the frustration of the fans. I’ve talked to coach Payton. The team, the players, we understand the frustration they feel right now, and we certainly want to address that” ~ NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (10 days after the game)

Tom Brady is 41 years old. Jared Goff is 24 years old. If the Patriots win, Brady will become the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, a record currently held by Peyton Manning (he was 39 in 2016 when the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers).

“He became a man the day of the greatest game he ever played. Everything he ever knew about common decency and morality he learned that day in December from Alan “The Horse” Ameche; and today in the Superbowl he would earn his wings. The crowd had assembled; a crowd of America’s elite. Toyata salesmen from all around the country—orientals and even those suspected of being orientals—stacked on the thirty yard line watching him sweat and wipe caked blood from his face. The Gallow brothers—Ernest and Julio—party guys who had skinned a few Mexicans and forced them to carry them on their shoulders down to the pre-game tailgate parties at the colosseum. The Pepsi and Coca Cola bottlers of America—Coke adds life; It’s the real thing—bombarded by missiles; flying flaming matchbook covers. The waterheads from General Motors up in the top seats where they belong; getting the worst of the pollution. All sorts of weird motherf*ckers were at the game.”

Gladys Knight performed the national anthem beautifully at Super Bowl 53. The seven-time Grammy Award winner and Atlanta native is best known for her hits “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “That’s What Friends are For”. There were rumors that she might be joined by The Pips, but that didn’t happen.

We made a pot of chili in the morning and had some for breakfast. Then we went to the market and bought our party supplies. We came home and prepped the food and then enjoyed the pre-game telecast and Super Bowl Sunday pre-party food and fun.

The game was really boring. The Patriots led 3-0 at halftime. The halftime show was terrible. The commercials were pretty bad, with only a couple of exceptions.
Not much to say about the commentary or pre-show. (F*ck Trump and his soft interview)
CBS’s visual coverage of the game was good. They had lots of cameras, effects, and no technical difficulties to speak of, but again the game was really boring.

The Rams were out-coached and out-played, but managed to stay in the game until the 4th quarter, when the Patriots finally scored a touchdown and then sealed the win with a an interception and field goal. FINAL SCORE: Patriots 13, Rams 3 (B-O-R-I-N-G)

Sad ending for a sad football season, marred by racial and political issues, and too many BAD F*CKING CALLS AND “NO CALLS” by the officials. The recent rule changes have hurt the game and the judgement calls by the referees have raised a lot of questions…..

Would it have been a better game if the Patriots beat the New Orleans Saints?

“Super Sunday. Dawn. My recollections of the last twelve hours are very dim. All that I know for certain is that shortly after I checked in, two third-world drug abusers disguised as hotel employees forced their way into my room; ransacked it, drank all my liquor, did all my drugs, stole my dinner. If the security precautions aren’t beefed up at this hotel; I’m looking for safer accommodations. It’s a sad state of affairs when this reporter has to go heavily armed to breakfast.”

“We also know our officials are human, we also know that they’re officiating a game that moves very quickly and have to make snap decisions under difficult circumstances,” he said. “And they’re not going to get it every time. As I say, they’re human.”
~ NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (10 days after the game)

Free Stuff to do in Vegas?

Q: Are there free things to do in Vegas?

A: Lots of Free Things to do in Las Vegas!

Walk the The Strip and the Fremont Street Experience downtown. Lots of “Only in Las Vegas” things to see day or night!

Visit Circus Circus Hotel & Casino (great for kids).

Watch the Fountains of Bellagio (and visit the Bellagio Gardens) and catch the Volcano eruption at The Mirage. Walk around the The Venetian, the MGM Grand Las Vegas, The Cosmopolitan or any of the other large resorts.

Most of the Casino lounges still have live entertainment. The Carnaval Court at Harrah’s is happening. The Rio Hotel & Casino has live music in the Masquerade Bar on Friday and Saturdays.

Art and architecture at City Center, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign, Wildlife habitat (flamingos) at the Flamingo Las Vegas, Auto collection at The Quad Resort & Casino (get free tickets on the website), the Downtown Container Park giant treehouse, and visit the Ethel M Chocolate Factory & Cactus Garden.

Window shop at Forum Shops at Caesars, The Grand Canal Shoppes or the Fashion Show mall.

Visit the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon or The Valley of Fire.

Best tips and casinos for first time gambler?

Q: First trip to Vegas, and I have some money set aside to gamble. I’m fairly new to gambling, so what’s a good overall strategy for a first timer? Best casino’s and games to play? Any tips to help my luck? Thanks!

A: Most of the Casinos in Las Vegas have programs where they will teach you how to play the table games and basic strategy. Just ask at the “Player’s Card” desk and always get a Player’s Card at the casino to earn “Comps” and other freebies while gambling.

Read a few good books, watch a DVD or two, go online and learn from the pros via youtube, etc. before you go!

Craps!

Craps!

Best games to play: Blackjack, Craps and Baccarat have the best odds for the player with basic strategy. Keno, Slots and Video Poker will give you the longest play for your money. Again read a book or watch a tutorial to learn about finding the best odds on the games!

Worst games to play: Roulette, Spin the Wheel/Wheel of Fortune and all the other weird table games. And any game where you don’t know the rules, basic strategy and the odds against you.

Best advice for the first time gambler: set a budget for how much you are willing and can afford to lose! Leave your ATM card at home and win or lose just have fun. (Losing sucks)

NOTE: The Big Las Vegas Strip casinos require larger minimum bets for table games, and the table minimum will increase depending on time/day/crowd/event. Find lower table minimums Downtown on Fremont Street and at the smaller “off-strip” casinos. Your money and your play time will last longer!

Birthday weekend in Vegas- where to stay?

Q: My friends and I going to Vegas for my birthday over Labor Day weekend! We need a place to stay that isn’t outrageously expensive, but has a lot going on. We’d like to stay in a hotel that has daytime pool parties. There are 5 of us and we’re open to getting two rooms or a suite, if it’s worth it. Any suggestions?

A: Las Vegas on Labor Day Weekend?

Try The Cromwell, the newest boutique hotel on the strip. It used to be Wild Bill’s and before that it was the Barbary Coast. Located center strip at Flamingo and Las Vegas Blvd. Drai’s is located in the hotel, so you get your choice of pool party, club night or after-hours. Hotel guests get VIP line access.

Just fully renovated! Everything is fresh and new.

Las Vegas Blvd "The Strip" at night

Las Vegas Blvd “The Strip” at night

You’re across Las Vegas Blvd from Caesars Palace Hotel & Casino and The Mirage Hotel & Casino and the volcano. Next door to Harrah’s Las Vegas, Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, The Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino, The Quad Resort & Casino soon to be renamed The LINQ after the giant ferris wheel. Across Flamingo is Bally’s Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, Paris Hotel And Casino, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, the Bellagio Hotel and fountain, and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

There’s lots to see and do within “walking distance”, which will save you on cab fare and waiting. Great restaurants, spas, clubs, shows and other diversions at any of the above resorts. you can also access the monorail at Bally’s or the Flamingo.

Las Vegas Blvd "The Strip" at night - The Flamingo

Las Vegas Blvd “The Strip” at night – The Flamingo

Make reservations in advance (and do it by telephone rather than online and always get the name of the person you talk to!) because everything will be crowded!

NOTE: Bring sneakers for walking and then switch to heels when you arrive at your destination. Use a Big purse and plastic bag.

Avoid the MGM, it’s too big and the service is only ok.

Bachelor party venues

Q: One of my best buddies is getting married next year and as a groomsman, I’ve been tasked being one of the organizers for his bachelor party.  Here’s the thing: none of us groomsman are really party animals, so we really have no idea where to start, but we just know that we want our buddy to have a good time and that we want to go to Vegas, just for the experience. Any ideas on which venues to start looking at and/or bachelor party-type activities?

A: Bachelor Party in Las Vegas! Do you want the full blown “Hangover, part 4” or just a good time?

First, how many people will be attending? Do you have hotel reservations? Do you want to have dinner, go clubbing, go drinking, go strip clubbing, hit an ultra-lounge or three, see a show, do some gambling, ride a roller coaster, or maybe shoot automatic weapons?

Or do you want to really get wild?

You can get a nice package deal with the hotels if you have a large group (sometimes, all you need is a block of five rooms). Hotel rooms, dinner, and entertainment can all be arranged, contact the group sales manager.

Rent a limo or party bus if you want to travel around, beyond walking distance. There are companies that can arrange the whole evening, just know that they are probably getting “kickbacks” from the party venues. NOTE: Be sure to shop around, negotiate for the best deal and extras, and always check safety and consumer reports before booking with any company!

You are on your own for strippers, escorts & hookers.

Good luck and be safe.

We stopped for gas and to stretch our legs somewhere between Barstow and Vegas, and I ate the strawberry glazed donut…it was a good donut, but they make such a fuss about them, I guess I expected something more.

The drive was without incident, and we arrived in Las Vegas and drove directly to our destination. We stayed both nights at The Palazzo Hotel at The Venetian-Palazzo Resort.

Best casinos for a first time gambler?

Q: Best casinos for a first time gambler? First trip to Vegas, and I have some money set aside to gamble. I’m fairly new to gambling, so what’s a good overall strategy for a first timer? Best casino’s and games to play? Any tips to help my luck? Thanks! – Neil B.

A: Most of the Casinos in Las Vegas have programs where they will teach you how to play the table games and basic strategy. Just ask at the “Player’s Card” desk and always get a Player’s Card at the casino to earn “Comps” and other freebies while gambling.

4f8d874fe4b067794ba2b3bf_pm9

Read a few good books, watch a DVD or two, go online and learn from the pros via youtube, etc. before you go!

GOOD LUCK!

04-MAY-13: Kentucky Derby Day!

May 4, 2013

May 4, 2013 – Louisville, Kentucky

Derby Day!

The Kentucky Derby has been run every year since 1875!

Derby Day! Have a Mint Julep!

Derby Day! Have a Mint Julep!

“I must….descant a little upon the mint-julep, as it is, with the thermometer at 100 degrees F., one of the most delightful and insinuating potations that ever was invented, and may be drunk with equal satisfaction when the thermometer is as low as 70 degrees.” – Captain Frederick Marryat’s diary (1838)

Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs

Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs – Louisville, Kentucky

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race for three-year-old thoroughbreds, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May. The race is one and a quarter miles at Churchill Downs.  The race is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” for its approximate duration, and is also called “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winning horse.

“The sun shines bright on my ol’ Kentucky home….”
“My Old Kentucky Home” became the official state song of Kentucky in 1928.
In 1986 the word “darkies” was changed to “people”.
