PUMPKIN TIME! 

Pumpkin and Pumpkin Seeds

Q: Is Pumpkin a vegetable or fruit?

A pumpkin is a winter squash plant. Cucurbita pepo is the most common pumpkin.
They are round with a smooth, slightly ribbed skin, and most often they are orange.

A: Pumpkin is a FRUIT because it’s an edible seed-bearing structure of a flowering plant. Many fruits that are not sweet, like tomatoes, beans, green peppers, avocados, etc. are mistakenly called vegetables.

Hollowed Out Pumpkin (with seeds and pulp removed)

Pumpkin, when sliced and cut, can be roasted, puréed into soup or baked into pies.
The pumpkin seeds are also edible and highly nutritious.

Toasted Pumpkin Seeds!
Separate seeds from pulp using a colander and a bowl. The seeds float. Clear the pulp. Rinse seeds and pat dry (as dry as possible). Combine in a bowl with olive oil and salt.
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Place seeds on foil or on a sheet. Bake for 20-30 minutes.
Spice as desired. (We used curry-ginger-cayenne-salt-brown sugar on these)

Pumpkin is high in vitamins and minerals and low in calories. It’s a great source of beta-carotene, a carotenoid that is converted into vitamin A. Pumpkin also contains the antioxidants alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and many others, which may protect cells against damage by free radicals. These compounds are linked to lower risks of stomach, throat, pancreas and breast cancers. Pumpkin is high in vitamins A and C, which can help boost the immune system. It is also a good source for of vitamin E, iron and folate which strengthen immunity as well. Pumpkin also has potassium, vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants, which have been linked to heart and other health benefits.

Food, Glorious Food!

Time for some HOMECOOKING! Or at least pictures of food cooked at our home.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert! We are grateful to be able to dine out and bring food in when we want. We are even more thankful that we have access to and can afford such wonderful food, when so many people in the world are hungry.

“Food, Glorious Food” is a song from the musical “Oliver!” The musical adaption of the Charles Dickens novel “The Adventures of Oliver Twist” the story of a young orphan who runs away to London in search of a better life.

Take just a moment to appreciate the food you eat. Be thankful you aren’t starving.

Dixie’s Orange Bread!

Good Morning! Testing this Orange Bread recipe for a Facebook group.
It really helps if you have an ancient California orange tree with ripe fruit ready!

Good Morning! Fresh California Oranges!

We seeded and juiced two oranges, then cut the peel/rind from one. Outer peel and just a little inside peel/rind. We cut it into thin strips and then chopped it fine before using it. The rind cooks off and leaves little flecks of the orange peel in the bread.

It’s a good recipe, but it needs a little tweaking. We used 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/2 brown sugar this time. And we are going to try melting the butter, and adding a teaspoon of baking soda and a dash of vanilla next time.

UPDATED Friday, March 15, 2019:
We did some Friday morning baking and made Orange Bread Take 2. As we mentioned above, we tweaked the recipe this time. Changes: one teaspoon baking soda, one teaspoon baking powder, added one teaspoon vanilla extract, melted the butter first, and used 1/2 cup fresh OJ and 1/4 cup cran-raspberry juice. Baked it for only 50 mins. And it came out much better!

PREGAME:

Super Bowl 50 – LEVI Stadium in San Jose, California

We don’t care who wins,
but we would like the New England Patriots to lose today.

We procrastinated and waited until this morning to do our party shopping.
So, we made an early Supermarket run for groceries and party supplies:

We weren’t sure what we were going to serve.
We planned on hot dogs (defrosted from the freezer).
We also thought wings and meatballs. So, that’s what we did.
Guacamole (had 2 ripe avocados), check. Chips, pretzels, etc., check.
We also did some of our shopping for the week.

We prepped the food, cooked the meatballs and then the wings,
made hotdogs for lunch and settled in for the Pre-Game Show.

Superbowl Sunday! Let’s get this party started!

LUNCH!

 

GAME TIME FOOD!

Watermelon!

ON THE MENU: 2 hotdogs with mustard, onions and cheese on Hawaiian bread buns! Watermelon! Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, kiwi fruit and red & green grapes. Hot Wings! Crudité: celery, carrots, persian cucumber with ranch dressing and dill pickles. Meatballs with marinara sauce! Fresh made guacamole! Tortilla chips, pretzel sticks, pistachio nuts, cool ranch Doritos, BBQ kettle potato chips, teriyaki beef jerky, milk chocolate Milano cookies and peanut M&Ms. Coca-Cola, Dr Pepper, cran-raspberry-orange-pineapple juice and iced espresso.

ITALIAN MEATBALLS (with Marinara Sauce):

Mix 1/2 lb ground beef, 1/2 lb pork sausage (we used links and removed the casings), chopped onion, bread crumbs and spices: black pepper, salt, garlic powder, minced garlic, and Italian seasoning in a medium bowl. Roll into golf ball sized meatballs.
Heat a large pan with a little olive oil to medium heat and brown the meatballs turning so all of the outside is seared but the inside is still slightly uncooked. Remove from pan and let sit for 5-10 mins. Warm marinara sauce in a pan and add meatballs, rolling them in the sauce until they are completely coated. Remove from pan and let sit for 5-10 mins.
Add cornstarch to the marinara sauce and drippings and stir until it thickens.
Pour sauce over meatballs.
Bake meatballs in the oven at 300 degrees for 5-10 mins before serving.

HOT WINGS (with celery, carrots and ranch dressing):

10 wings (cut up with the ends trimmed off)
Mix 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 tsp cayenne powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder and 1/2 tsp salt in a large bowl. Coat wings completely and place in the refrigerator for an hour.
Heat oil and deep fry the wings. Place on paper towels to drain.
In a separate bowl mix 1/2 cup melted butter, 1/2 cup of Frank’s Red Hot Sauce (or other hot sauce), a dash of black pepper, a dash of garlic powder. Dip each wing in sauce and place on baking sheet. Bake in oven at low heat for 15 mins on each side, then broil for 2 mins on each side. Serve with ranch dressing, extra sauce, celery and carrots.

NOTE: To be honest, we watched the game and commercials while enjoying the food and the Super Bowl party. We did LIVE POST all the scoring plays on our personal facebook timeline as they happened, but it was so we could get the pics for this blog, which we are writing at Midnight long after the game is over.
We recorded it, so we are watching it again as we write this Blog.

The New England Patriots Won Super Bowl 51 in Overtime 34-28.

“Turn out the lights, the party’s over!”

The Atlanta Falcons choked and lost the game in the Second Half. The New England Patriots beat them by a touchdown in Overtime making what looked like a complete “blowout” in the First Half into an exciting game in the Second Half. Tom Brady led his team to the WIN and Atlanta was unable to respond after the early 3rd Quarter touchdown.

The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its sour to semi-sweet fruit. Happy Thanksgiving 2015!

Thirty guests for the holiday feast this year! We host our large annual gathering of family, friends and friends of friends. Visitors to our home included folks from faraway places: Finland, France, Scotland, the Czech Republic and West Hollywood.

You can compare this year to last year’s pics (in the previous Blog post), it was another very good year for food. I am truly thankful for this bountiful feast and the family and friends I shared it with. I am truly thankful for many things, including you reading this blog!

Thanksgiving dinner,
Our annual food orgy,
A friendly feast!

Preparations begin early in the week and continue all the way until the meal is served. The party was called for 4:00pm pst on Thursday and we always allow time for our guests to arrive before the dining commences.

The turkeys are thawed and prepared the night before. This year we had two 18 pound organic turkeys, seasoned with a herb & butter rub under the skin. One bird cooks at our house and the other at my sister’s kitchen. She also makes the garlic mashed potato, chocolate bread pudding and fudge. This year her vegetarian friend was visiting so they made the summer squash as well.

Two 18 pound organic turkeys, gravy, two kinds of stuffing, garlic mashed potato, corn pudding, yam puree, asparagus, creamed spinach, mixed grilled vegetables, summer squash, fruit compote, cranberry sauce and cornbread muffins.

Pumpkin, pecan and apricot pies (we also had an apple but didn’t bake it); chocolate chip cookies, 2 kinds of fudge, blondies, chocolate bread pudding & fresh whipped cream, Czech cake with marzipan, a chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream (someone brought a flourless chocolate cake but we didn’t even put it out) and Grandma’s Cherry Cheesecake!

It was a great meal! And complete dessert overkill as usual. I had a full plate of tasty food for dinner and then only had a small piece of cheesecake and a couple pieces of fudge for dessert. And a good time and meal was had by all.

We have the whole process down and this year we used plastic (for dinner) and paper (for dessert) plates, so there was less to clean up and we saved some water in exchange for creating some additional trash.

I finished eating, helped with the clearing and clean up, watched the end of the Bears-Packers game and fell asleep. When I woke up, most of the final cleaning was done, the guests were gone and the tables and chairs were put away. So, BIG THANKS go out to my Step-Brother for helping out while I was napping!

It was an okay day for football. Detroit beat Philadelphia and Carolina beat Dallas, but Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers couldn’t finish and lost to Chicago, so I went 2 out of 3 on my picks. Bad news for Cowboy fans because Quarterback Tony Romo was seriously injured in the game and is out for the rest of the season. Sorry Bob.

Okay, we have “to go” boxes for our guests to take home leftovers from the feast if they are so inclined. I had cranberries with my brunch leftovers, but there wasn’t enough left for dinner the next day… we also sent most of the desserts home with our guests too.

Change is necessary and inevitable. And for restaurants and bars in Ashland, change is a common occurrence. And so it goes, say goodbye to Alex’s and hello to the Brickroom!

Exposed red brick walls give this place it’s name, the wood floor and furniture with the granite bar and a lot of lights, give this place a clean and comfortable decor.

I wandered in around 9:30pm on a Tuesday evening. Things were pretty quiet and there was a small crowd at the bar. The end of the Dodgers’ game was on television and the Dodgers were winning (oh, the irony).

I ordered a “Stoli rocks with a couple splashes of pineapple juice” and then ordered a small basket of fries to soak up the alcohol.

The small crowd was lively but not unruly and everyone was having a good time.

I enjoyed being able to walk in and find a seat at the end of the bar. I’m told they have live music, and that the place gets crowded on the weekend or when they have a good band.

I stayed long enough (about an hour) to sip my drink, eat the fries and check out the new joint on the Plaza. It’s a nice place, not a dive bar, and it has a friendly vibe. The food and drink are reasonably priced, they have a good menu and non-alcoholic drink options. The drink was potent, the fries were terrific and the service was good.

There is also an outside patio upstairs on the backside of the building on Guanajuato Lane, a pedestrian walkway along Ashland Creek. It has awnings for shade and a nice view of the water and green landscape of Ashland Creek Park.
