Happy Chinese New Year 2017!

恭喜發財! Happy Chinese New Year 2017! 新年好呀!新年好呀!

“May all your wishes be fulfilled”

THE YEAR OF THE RED FIRE ROOSTER! 祝贺大家新年好!
(or Chicken, referring to barnyard fowl of either sex)

Roosters have these five virtues:
Literary skills, military prowess, courage, benevolence and trustworthiness

Roosters have these personality traits:
They are observant, hardworking, resourceful, courageous, talented and
trustworthy with a strong sense of timekeeping and responsibility at work

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year 2017!

The Spring Festival begins on Saturday, January 28 at midnight.
The first day is for welcoming the deities of the heavens and earth.
It is tradition to light fireworks and firecrackers, burn bamboo sticks
and make as much noise as possible to chase off evil spirits.

FIREWORKS! GUNG HAY FAT CHOY!

NOTE: The lunar year of the Rooster starts on January 28th.
The “Start of Spring” is February 3rd according to the Chinese solar calendar.

13887096_1202658543089330_6915378095758377602_n

The first day is also a time to honor family elders and visit the oldest and most senior members of the extended families (parents, grandparents and great-grandparents).

For Buddhists the first day is also the birthday of Maitreya Bodhisattva, the Buddha-to-be. They also abstain from killing animals and meat consumption on the first day.

“May you realize all your ambitions”

According to ancient Chinese superstition, lighting fires and using knives is considered bad luck on New Year’s Day, so all food is usually cooked beforehand. It is also considered bad luck to use a broom during the New Year’s celebration.

fireworks

FIREWORKS! HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Usually the best way to avoid bad luck is to wear red, but because the fire element for 2017 is RED, do not use red in your clothes and accessories! Red colored stones like ruby, garnet and pink topaz should also be avoided. Instead, use colors that complement red and the fire element. Earth colored items (browns or yellows) are most suitable. Purple and lavender colors will also be lucky. Amethyst and topaz will bring luck and success.

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year!

NOTE: There are 13 lunar months instead of 12, and 384 days in 2017. To keep the Chinese lunar calendar within half a month of the traditional solar calendar, there’s a leap month (a second lunar month 6 starting July 23rd) in The Year of the Rooster.

The Chinese Zodiac:

d399ceda2120452d80463134

The Chinese zodiac is a recurring 12-year cycle. Each year is represented by one of 12 animals. Sorry Roosters, those in their birth-sign year will supposedly have bad luck.

NOTE: You will need to work hard and be patient to achieve your goals this year! Maintain a positive frame of mind. Meditation will help keep you calm and serene.

“May your happiness be without limit”

Vintage Storage Find #2B – Disneyland Vacationland Summer 1977 Magazine (part 2)

Storage Find #2B – Disneyland Vacationland Summer 1977 Magazine (part 2)

NOTE: This Blog was originally written and constructed 12 JUNE 2014. This is the first time it’s been published. Enjoy!

I actually found this vintage Disneyland Vacationland magazine from 1977 before I found the “Sleeping Beauty” poster (see a previous blog) and have been posting pages on my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/joshwilltravel and sharing them with the Vintage Disneyland group. It was in MINT CONDITION and I was hesitant to even scan it for fear of damage.

In addition to the cover story on the Grand Opening of Space Mountain, the contents include articles on the Main Street Electrical Parade, the Golden Horseshoe Revue, “The Rescuers” and the Disneyland Costume Division. There are also vintage promotions for the Gerber Baby Center and Orville Reddenbacher Popcorn (both new additions in 1977) and cool retro ads for Disneyland, Wonder Bread/Hostess, GAF/Kodak and even other theme parks: Knotts, Magic Mountain, Lion Country Safari and Universal Studios.

It was just too cool not to share! So here is what I scanned:

Great vacation! Burning Man 2014 – The Man Burns Longtime!

Took the week off posting to the blog, but I’ve been armchair surfing the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert all week. Last night the Man burned, and smoldered, and smoked, and then finally fell.

Burning Man 2014 - Great Pic!

Burning Man 2014 – Great Pic! The Man and “Embrace” silhouetted against the desert sky

THE USTREAM WEBCAST COVERAGE SUCKED HARD!!! (and “F*ck your day!” if you think otherwise) YES I’M A CRITIC! And I’m going to trash the Ustream cast.

Someone suggested that if I wanted better coverage I should go out to the desert. I don’t disagree, and it would be really cool to be there, but alas I’m stuck here in Los Angeles sharing the experience with about 14000 people online (at peak viewing) and the camera operator doesn’t know how to focus the HD camera. There were 100% Technical Problems including not enough bandwidth and choppy streaming, MAJOR AUDIO PROBLEMS, loss of picture, loss of stream, terrible picture in picture that distracted from the burn, ZERO CREATIVITY!, and terrible camera technique. Learn how to FOCUS!

BEST MOMENT: At one point the picture cut to the guy operating the stream, a bearded hipster in coveralls, he looked up from the keyboard and saw that he was live on the web, made a great “surprise” face and then immediately switched the stream back. I hope someone got a screen shot of the guy’s video selfie, so we can post it!

Okay, so there you go. thanks to everyone who made the webcast happen, we really appreciate your effort, but unfortunately EPIC FAIL!

Burning Man 2014

Burning Man 2014 – The Man Burns!

I watched the webcast and wasn’t the only person who thought the coverage sucked.

And here’s the big kicker: It took over an hour for The Man to burn. There were fireworks, and a great conflagration, and then another 45 minutes or more of “smoldering man”, “standing man” and “boring man” before the effigy actually collapsed.

A much better burn happened on Friday afternoon when they burned the “Embrace” art! There are great pictures and cool video online of the fire. Check it out!

After the 4th of July…Midsummer’s Daydream and Dinner at CPK!

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday weekend!

Fireworks! Celebrate America with explosives!

Fireworks! Celebrate America with explosives!

Family, Friends, Food, and Fireworks! Did you BBQ?

We had a small family barbecue dinner at home in the valley. Chose not to travel this holiday weekend and happy with that choice. I was invited to a big street party in Hawthorne on the other side of LAX that sounded fun, but it was a drive down the 405 freeway and it’s a Highway Patrol “maximum enforcement” weekend. Also, I don’t like to leave my dogs alone after dark on the 4th of July for obvious reasons.

On The Menu: Hamburger, chicken sausage on a bun, dill pickle, avocado, tortilla chips, sweet potato tortilla chips, sea salt & vinegar potato chips, watermelon and a coke. And then a giant fruit tart cake for dessert.

There was also a selection of olives, macaroni salad, and potato salad.

I wasn’t happy with the hamburger, so I got busy later after midnight and made a double cheeseburger with turkey bacon.

Today was the Monday after the weekend, a day to recover from the celebration, and then dinner at CPK (California Pizza Kitchen) again. Enjoyed a very nice dinner at the same restaurant last week, and had a coupon good on our next visit, so we went back again tonight.

On The Menu tonight: 1/2 of a Chinese chicken salad and a Hawaiian pizza with pepperoni, sourdough bread and a frozen mango lemonade.

Tried the frozen mango lemonade last week and it was cold fruity goodness! So I had it again, but decided to have different food items.

On The Menu last week: 1/2 of a BBQ chopped chicken salad and a BBQ chicken pizza (no cilantro and light onion), sourdough bread and a frozen mango lemonade.

They recently replaced the dry white bread and butter with fresh baked sourdough bread and oil. It is such an improvement! Something that doesn’t seem like a big deal, really changes the dining experience.
