HAPPY YEAR OF THE YIN SILVER METAL OX!

The first day is for welcoming the deities of the heavens and earth.
It is tradition to light fireworks and firecrackers, burn bamboo sticks
and make as much noise as possible to chase off evil spirits.

The first day is also a time to honor family elders and visit the oldest and most senior members of the extended families (parents, grandparents and great-grandparents).

The Chinese (LUNAR) New Year Festival runs for 15 days,

For Buddhists the first day is also the birthday of Maitreya Bodhisattva, the Buddha-to-be.
They also abstain from killing animals and meat consumption on the first day.

People born in the Year of the Ox are faithful and trustworthy.
They have leadership qualities and a tendency to be stubborn and judgmental.
They also stick to their routines and they are good workers.
They are cautious, and that helps them to avoid misfortune.

Asian American Art Museum in San Francisco

The San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival and Parade is the oldest and largest celebration outside of Asia, and the largest Asian cultural event in North America. Over 100 groups participate in the annual Chinese New Year Parade held since 1958. It is attended by ~500,000 people and watched by another 3 million television viewers.

“For over 5,000 years the Chinese have celebrated the awakening of spring with Lunar New Year festivities. In the 1860’s the Chinese in San Francisco started the Chinese New Year Parade as a way to educate their community about Chinese cultural customs. Today, San Francisco’s Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Festival and Parade – a two week celebration including a Flower Fair, Community Fair, Jamboree, Run, and the Miss Chinatown USA Pageant and Ball – is the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside of Asia.
A San Francisco tradition since just after the Gold Rush, the Parade continues to delight and entertain the over one million people that come to watch it on the street and hundreds of thousands more who watch the live broadcast…
Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, exploding firecrackers , and of course, the newly crowned Miss Chinatown U.S.A. and her court. A crowd favorite is the spectacular 268′ Golden Dragon (“Gum Lung”). It takes a team of over 100 men and women from the martial arts group, White Crane to carry this dragon throughout the streets of San Francisco.”

UPDATE: The San Francisco 2021 Chinese New Year Parade has been CANCELLED due to COVID-19 and concerns over large public gatherings. Instead a Parade Broadcast Special will air on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at 6 pm PST on KTVU. and a there will only be a few small live public events. Info: @ChineseParade

“The Dragon can ride mist and float on clouds in the sky, chase the storm and churn the waves in the sea, and summon wind and call for rain on the earth. More importantly, the Dragon symbolized the imperial power in the slave and feudal societies of China, and its image was exclusively used by the emperor.”

“Fai chun are traditional decorations that are frequently used during Lunar New Year.
People hang fai chun (red and gold paper signs with significant Chinese characters) on their doors to create a festive atmosphere. The phrases generally signify good luck and prosperity. Customarily, fai chun are written by hand, but for convenience, printed versions are mass-produced nowadays. The decorations are either square or rectangular in shape and can be displayed vertically or horizontally.”

According to ancient Chinese superstition, lighting fires and using knives is considered bad luck on New Year’s Day, so all food is usually cooked beforehand. It is also considered bad luck to use a broom during the New Year’s celebration.

The Pig is the twelfth of the Chinese zodiac animals. According to myth, the Jade Emperor decided the zodiac by the order in which each animal arrived to a party. The Pig was late because he overslept, arrived last and ended up number twelve.

The Pig is yin. The Pig is associated with the Earth element and the hours 9–11 at night.
Pigs are a symbol of wealth. Fat faces and big ears are also signs of good fortune.

Recent past years of the Pig: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, and 2007

Happy Thanksgiving, Let’s Feast! What’s on the menu?

WISHING YOU AND YOURS A VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING! CELEBRATE GRATITUDE!

It’s that time again. It’s TurkeyTime! This year we’re having 30 people for our traditional Thanksgiving dinner feast and then I’m invited to another smaller dinner party after that. It’s a fine time to be a foodie.

Pictures and the menu from last year’s feast: (see more in the previous Blog, link below)

Thanksgiving dinner menu: Roast turkey with gravy, cranberry sauce, garlic mashed potato, corn pudding, candied yams, carrot & yam puree, 2 kinds of stuffing, asparagus, brussel sprouts, creamed spinach and home baked challah bread. Red wine, white wine, coke, cherry coke and coffee to drink.

Depression? Questions to Ask – Before Giving Up!

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and depression may make you feel as if life isn’t worth living.

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, get help right away!

Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

Depression? Questions to Ask – Before Giving Up!

Are you hydrated? If not, have a glass of water.

Have you eaten in the past three hours? If not, get some food — something with protein, not just simple carbs. Perhaps some nuts or hummus?

Have you showered in the past day? If not, take a shower right now.

Have you stretched your legs in the past day? If not, do so right now. If you don’t have the energy for a run or trip to the gym, just walk around the block, then keep walking as long as you please. If the weather’s crap, drive to a big box store (e.g. Target) and go on a brisk walk through the aisles you normally skip.

Have you said something nice to someone in the past day? Do so, whether online or in person. Make it genuine; wait until you see something really wonderful about someone, and tell them about it.

Have you moved your body to music in the past day? If not, jog for the length of an EDM song at your favorite tempo, or just dance around the room for the length of an upbeat song.

Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days? If not, do so. Don’t be afraid to ask for hugs from friends or friends’ pets. Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; you’re not imposing on them.

Have you seen a therapist in the past few days? If not, hang on until your next therapy visit and talk through things then.

Have you changed any of your medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand? That may be screwing with your head. Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesn’t settle down.

If daytime: are you dressed? If not, put on clean clothes that aren’t pajamas. Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether it’s a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.

If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep? Put on pajamas, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes — no electronic screens allowed. If you’re still awake after that, you can get up again; no pressure.

Do you feel ineffective? Pause right now and get something small completed, whether it’s responding to an e-mail, loading up the dishwasher, or packing your gym bag for your next trip. Good job!

Do you feel unattractive? Take a goddamn selfie. Your friends will remind you how great you look, and you’ll help fight society’s restrictions on what beauty can look like.

Do you feel paralyzed by indecision? Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.

Have you over-exerted yourself lately — physically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually? That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether it’s physical rest, taking time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment.

Have you waited a week? Sometimes our perception of life is skewed, and we can’t even tell that we’re not thinking clearly, and there’s no obvious external cause. It happens. Keep yourself going for a full week.

Symptoms of Depression:

  • Feelings of sadness, emptiness, guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or unhappiness
  • Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, such as sex
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
  • Tiredness, fatigue and lack of energy, so that even small tasks take extra effort
  • Changes in appetite — often reduced appetite and weight loss, but also overeating and increased cravings for food and weight gain in some people
  • Anxiety, agitation or restlessness — for example, excessive worrying, pacing, hand-wringing or an inability to sit still
  • Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that are not your responsibility
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
  • Frequent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide
  • Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, get help right away!

Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

C'mon, this is funny!

C’mon, this is funny!

If you or someone you know is in crisis, there are places to get help. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available at 1-800-273-8255. You can also chat with them online at suicidepreventionlifeline.org/chat/.

Here are some common warning signs of suicide, as provided by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:

  • Talking about wanting to die
  • Looking for a way to kill oneself
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose
  • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Acting anxious, agitated or recklessly
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Withdrawing or feeling isolated
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
  • Displaying extreme mood swings

UPDATED 11-14-19: Did you know that if you text 741741 when you are feeling depressed, suicidal or anxious, a crisis worker will text you back and continue to text with you? Many people, especially younger folks, do not like talking on the phone and would be more comfortable texting. It’s a free service to ANYONE – teens, adults, etc. – who lives in the U.S. It’s run by The Crisis Text Line and is legit.

It’s ok to not be ok sometimes. People care about you and the world would not be the same without you in it. ❤️

NOTE: I was going to bake a cherry cheesecake, but because I knew there would be enough dessert and due to a lack of “baking enthusiasm”, it did not happen.

I hope you enjoyed seeing this meal as much as I did eating it! And there were leftovers…

And then the “TURKEY COMA” followed by a nice nap. I was invited to another party, but had to send my regrets. Too full, too tired and too late. It was a wonderful day.

After the 4th of July…Midsummer’s Daydream and Dinner at CPK!

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday weekend!

Fireworks! Celebrate America with explosives!

Fireworks! Celebrate America with explosives!

Family, Friends, Food, and Fireworks! Did you BBQ?

We had a small family barbecue dinner at home in the valley. Chose not to travel this holiday weekend and happy with that choice. I was invited to a big street party in Hawthorne on the other side of LAX that sounded fun, but it was a drive down the 405 freeway and it’s a Highway Patrol “maximum enforcement” weekend. Also, I don’t like to leave my dogs alone after dark on the 4th of July for obvious reasons.

On The Menu: Hamburger, chicken sausage on a bun, dill pickle, avocado, tortilla chips, sweet potato tortilla chips, sea salt & vinegar potato chips, watermelon and a coke. And then a giant fruit tart cake for dessert.

There was also a selection of olives, macaroni salad, and potato salad.

I wasn’t happy with the hamburger, so I got busy later after midnight and made a double cheeseburger with turkey bacon.

Today was the Monday after the weekend, a day to recover from the celebration, and then dinner at CPK (California Pizza Kitchen) again. Enjoyed a very nice dinner at the same restaurant last week, and had a coupon good on our next visit, so we went back again tonight.

On The Menu tonight: 1/2 of a Chinese chicken salad and a Hawaiian pizza with pepperoni, sourdough bread and a frozen mango lemonade.

Tried the frozen mango lemonade last week and it was cold fruity goodness! So I had it again, but decided to have different food items.

On The Menu last week: 1/2 of a BBQ chopped chicken salad and a BBQ chicken pizza (no cilantro and light onion), sourdough bread and a frozen mango lemonade.

They recently replaced the dry white bread and butter with fresh baked sourdough bread and oil. It is such an improvement! Something that doesn’t seem like a big deal, really changes the dining experience.

INTRODUCING ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S, THE QUANTUM OF THE SEAS!

ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S NEWEST SHIP, THE QUANTUM OF THE SEAS

Royal Caribbean's newest ship the Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s newest ship the Quantum of the Seas

The Sea is Calling. Answer it Royally.

The sea is calling.  It whispers your name, inviting you in.  Some barely hear the call over the noise of their lives.  Others answer it quietly by dipping a toe or wading ankle deep in its shore.  But going in halfway isn’t our way.

We believe in answering the call in a way that is as majestic as the sea itself.

When the sea calls with breathtaking views, we answer with balcony rooms big enough to take them in.  When the sea calls your name, we answer by knowing your name.  A sea that sparkles with light is answered with a Vitality Spa that fills you with light.  And when the sea calls with endless destinations, we answer with the best destination to see them all.  You could say answering the call of the sea is our calling.  And there aren’t enough anchors in the world to hold us back.

This explains why we’re the only global cruise line sailing every major sea in the world.

The Sea is Calling. Answer it Royally.

UPDATED March 2, 2017
Our good friend Ann O’Reilly (nee Collins) passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on February 22, 2017. Our thoughts are with her family and friends who loved her. We are shocked and saddened by her death and really can’t adequately express our feelings here.

REST IN PEACE ANNIE – May the Four Winds blow her safely home!
