King Cotton Blues

King Cotton Blues
Lyrics by Robert Hunter
Music by Malcolm Welbourne (Papa Mali), Bill Kreutzmann, Matt Hubbard
as performed by 7 Walkers

Got the king cotton blues, that I can’t deny
I’ve always been in trouble, but, I never did know why
Some say it’s my attitude, others said my luck
Those that said my just deserts can take a flying fuck

Got the king cotton blues, right down to my core
I can take the licking, boys, stand up and ask for more
It ain’t because of courage, on account of being brave
I never saw much reason to avoid an early grave

[Chorus:]
King cotton blues boys, be it understood
Shotgun is too merciful, hanging is too good
Drowning’s too uncertain, poison is too slow
To snuff a worthless widow’s son whose time has come to go

Got the king cotton blues, reason to complain
All the local prostitutes, spit upon my name
I take out my handkerchief, and dust that shit away
Revenge don’t bring relief, boys, no matter what they say

Got the king cotton blues, price upon my head
A thousand bucks alive, and double if I’m dead
They don’t want to have to feed me, they know my appetite
Let’s head down to the bar afar, and pick another fight

[Chorus]

Got the king cotton blues when shit hits the fan
No shame to duck, boys, any chance you can
Take your absolution, at the whorehouse down the block
For those who disavow you, can wind the devil’s clock

Got the king cotton blues, every dog knows the tune
Every cat has a version, beneath the brightful moon
Take your revolution, and stick it upper class
Be kind to one another, and dip your lights when you pass

[Chorus]

Got the king cotton blues, that’s all I got to say
They done locked up the keys, and threw the house away
I’m just buying my time ’til they pop my red balloon
Feed me to the tigers, throw my leg across the moon

[Chorus]

King Cotton Blues by 7 Walkers with Willie Nelson:

7 Walkers (2009-2012) featured former Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann,
guitarist and singer Malcolm Welbourne aka Papa Mali,
multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard, and bassist George Porter Jr.
NOTE: Reed Mathis was an original member of 7 Walkers,
He played on the self-titled debut album (released on November 2, 2010)
He left the band due to touring commitments and was replaced by George Porter Jr..

And now a little King Cotton history:

51ddD7gIZ0L

“‘King Cotton’ is a slogan that summarized the strategy used before the American Civil War (of 1861–1865) by pro-secessionists in the southern states (the future Confederate States of America) to claim the feasibility of secession and to prove there was no need to fear a war with the northern states.” – wikipedia

slide_1

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll,
or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants.

Genus: Gossyplum – family: malvaceae

India is the world’s largest producer of cotton.
The five leading exporters of cotton in 2019:
(1) India, (2) the United States, (3) China, (4) Brazil, and (5) Pakistan.

The invention of the cotton gin lowered the cost of production,
leading to greater profits, and the expansion of cotton farming and slavery.

SLAVERY AND SLAVE LABOR – The real hands that built America!
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Monroe,
John Hancock, and many other “Founding Fathers” owned slaves.

August, 1619 –  First Slaves arrive in Jamestown, Virginia
20-30 enslaved Africans landed at Point Comfort
(now Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia)
Captain Jope and Mr. Marmaduke from the English warship ‘White Lion’
traded captives removed from the Portuguese slave ship, San Juan Bautista
to the Governor and Cape Merchant of Jamestown for food and supplies.

1662 – Slavery officially recognized as the statutory law of the colony.
Legislation passed to define the status of mixed-race (mulatto) children.
Children were considered the same status as their mother.
If the child was born to a slave, the child would be born a slave.

BLACKLIVESMATTER!
Acknowledge the history and legacy of slavery, the slave trade,
the failed reconstruction and post Civil War retaliation, sharecropping,
“The Great Migration”, the Klu Klux Klan, segregation, Jim Crow, and racism!

“Oh! Isn’t that a Dainty Dish to set before the King!”
by artist John McLenan (1827-1865)

This cartoon depicts General George B. McClellan delivering a live bombshell to the table of the British monarchy. The table top says “Virginia” while the body of it is made of cotton and the supports are “whiskey.” Standing nearby is Lord Palmerston pictured as a whiskey bottle (“Old Rye Prime Minister”). In the background is a slave atop a stack of cotton and a black servant commenting on the instabilty of the cotton stack. This is referencing Great Britiain’s policy of neutrality towards the American Civil War and the belief by many Northerners that it was merely a strategic position taken by the British to maximize their economic benefits. In reality, Palmerston viewed neutrality and the possible success of the Confederacy as lucrative economic possibilites for Great Britiain. This depiction is infering that McClellan and the Union Army will destroy the foundation of this economic plan (portrayed here as cotton) through their military successes.

The Triangular Trade in the 18th and 19th centuries:
Great Britain shipped goods to West Africa.
These goods were used to buy captured Africans.
The African slaves were shipped to the West Indies and the Americas
and exchanged for sugar, rum, and other goods.
And then these goods were shipped back to Great Britain.

“COTTON IS KING!”
unnamed

The “King Cotton” March was composed in 1895 by John Philip Sousa
for the Cotton States and International Exposition (1895).

The Cheese Shop Sketch

The Cheese Shop Sketch
by Monty Python’s Flying Circus

193488808_4827328387293689_3027348677766220419_n

NOTE: Friday was National Cheese Day! So we ripped and edited this sketch.
And then last night PBS had a special about “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” on.
So, here it is. Makes us laugh everytime! Cue the Bouzouki music.

INTERIOR: CHEESE SHOP
(a customer walks in the door.)

Customer (John Cleese): Good Morning.
Owner (Michael Palin): Good morning, Sir. Welcome to the National Cheese Emporium!
Customer: Ah thank you my good man.
Owner: What can I do for you, Sir?
C: Well, I was, uh, sitting in the public library on Thurmon Street just now, skimming through ‘Rogue Herrys’ by Hugh Walpole, and I suddenly came over all peckish.
O: Peckish, sir?
C: Esuriant. O: Eh?
C: ‘Ee I were all ‘ungry-like! O: Ah, hungry!
C: In a nutshell. And I thought to myself, ‘a little fermented curd will do the trick’, so, I curtailed my Walpoling activites, sallied forth, and infiltrated your place of purveyance to negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles!
O: Come again?
C: I want to buy some cheese.
O: Oh, I thought you were complaining about the bouzouki player!
C: Oh, heaven forbid: I am one who delights in all manifestations of the Terpsichorean muse!
O: Sorry?
C: ‘Ooo, Ah lahk a nice tune, ‘yer forced to!
O: So he can go on playing, can he?
C: Most certainly! Now then, some cheese please, my good man.
O: (lustily) Certainly, sir. What would you like?
C: Well, eh, how about a little Red Leicester.
O: I’m, a-fraid we’re fresh out of Red Leicester, sir.
C: Oh, never mind, how are you on Tilsit?
O: I’m afraid we never have that at the end of the week, sir, we get it fresh on Monday.
C: Tish tish. No matter. Well, stout yeoman, four ounces of Caerphilly, if you please.
O: Ah! It’s beeeen on order, sir, for two weeks. Was expecting it this morning.
C: ‘T’s Not my lucky day, is it? Aah, Bel Paese? O: Sorry, sir.
C: Red Windsor? O: Normally, sir, yes. Today the van broke down.
C: Ah. Stilton? O: No.
C: Gruyere? Emmental? O: No.
C: Any Norwegian Jarlsberger, per chance? O: No.
C: Liptauer? O: No.
C: Lancashire? O: No.
C: White Stilton? O: No.
C: Danish Blue? O: No.
C: Double Gloucester? O: (pause) No.
C: Cheshire? O: No.
C: Dorset Blue Vinney? O: No.
C: Brie, Roquefort, Pont-l’Eveque, Port Salut, Savoyard, Saint-Paulin, Carre-de-L’Est, Boursin, Bresse Bleu, Perle de Champagne? O: No.
C: Camembert, perhaps?
O: Ah! We have Camembert, yessir.
C: (suprised) You do! Excellent.
O: Yessir. It’s ah… it’s a bit runny.
C: Oh, I like it runny.
O: Well,.. It’s very runny, actually, sir.
C: No matter. Fetch hither the fromage de la Belle France! Mmmwah!
O: I…think it’s a bit runnier than you’ll like it, sir.
C: I don’t care how fucking runny it is. Hand it over with all speed.
O: Oooooooooohhh……..! (pause)
C: What now?
O: The cat’s eaten it.
C: (pause) Has he? O: She, sir.
(pause)
C: Gouda? O: No.
C: Edam? O: No.
C: Caithness? O: No.
C: Smoked Austrian? O: No.
C: Japanese Sage Darby? O: No sir.
C: You… do have some cheese, don’t you?
O: (brightly) Of course, sir. It’s a cheese shop, sir. We’ve got-
C: No no… don’t tell me. I’m keen to guess.
O: Fair enough.
C: Uuuuuh, Wensleydale. O: Yes sir?
C: Ah, well, I’ll have some of that!
O: Oh! I thought you were talking to me, sir. Mister Wensleydale, that’s my name.
(pause)
C: Greek Feta? O: Uh, not as such.
C: Uuh, Gorgonzola? O: No
C: Parmesan? O: No
C: Mozzarella? O: No
C: Pippo Creme? O: No
C: Danish Fimboe? O: No
C: Czech sheep’s milk? O: No
C: Venezuelan Beaver Cheese? O: Not -today-, sir, no.
(pause)
C: Aah, how about Cheddar?
O: Well, we don’t get much call for it around here, sir.
C: Not much ca–It’s the single most popular cheese in the world!
O: Not ’round here, sir.
C: (slight pause) and what IS the most popular cheese ’round hyah?
O: ‘Illchester, sir.
C: IS it?
O: Oh, yes, it’s staggeringly popular in this manusquire.
C: Is it?
O: It’s our number one best seller, sir!
C: I see. Uuh… ‘Illchester, eh?
O: Right, sir.
C: All right. Okay. ‘Have you got any?’ He asked, expecting the answer ‘no’.
O: I’ll have a look, sir.. nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnno.
C: It’s not much of a cheese shop, is it?
O: Finest in the district sir!
C: (annoyed) Explain the logic underlying that conclusion, please.
O: Well, it’s so clean, sir!
C: It’s certainly uncontaminated by cheese.
O: (brightly) You haven’t asked me about Limburger, sir.
C: Would it be worth it?
O: Could be.
C: Have you —SHUT THAT BLOODY BOUZOUKI OFF!
O: Told you sir…
C: (slowly) Have you got any Limburger?
O: No.
C: Figures. Predictable, really I suppose. It was an act of purest optimism to have posed the question in the first place……. Tell me:
O: Yessir?
C: (deliberately) Have you in fact got any cheese here at all?
O: Yes,sir.
C: Really?
(pause)
O: No. Not really, sir.
C: You haven’t.
O: No sir. Not a scrap. I was deliberately wasting your time, sir.
C: Well I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to shoot you.
O: Right-0, sir.
(The customer takes out a gun and shoots the shopkeeper)
C: What a senseless waste of human life.

“And now for something completely different…..”

A wee bit more Monty Python is necessary.

‘Ello, I wish to register a complaint.

He lies. He lies all the time. They broadcast soundbites that make him look good.
Fox News is trying to put a positive spin on the pandemic, comparing it to the flu,
(like it’s no big deal) and ALWAYS shilling for Trump….

As of Monday, March 16, 2020 at 11:15pm PST

THE STOCK MARKET (Dow Jones) DROPPED 3000 POINTS MONDAY (that’s 13%)!
The Stock Market dropped 2200 points at the open and trading was immediately suspended! It was another really bad day on Wall Street,
the biggest one day loss in history…. you might even call it “HISTORIC”
Screen Shot 2020-03-17 at 00.38.45
And then there was another Press Conference…..
(remember how he praised the stock market on Friday, Saturday & Sunday?)

“WHITE WASHING”

The longer Trump talked, the more the stock market dropped on Monday!
And why do all the doctors behind him look really scared?
But, someone must have slapped him awake, because he didn’t mumble today.
3000 points! Hannity and his Money Men must have called.
He said “maybe a recession” and BOOM. (Someone must have spanked him!)
“It’s not under control” and BOOM. And then more incoherent rambling.
MORE LIES, MORE PATTING HIMSELF ON THE BACK, MORE THANK YOUS,
and “We’re going to have a big celebration.” BOOM!

They’re talking economic relief for the airlines, hotel and cruise companies,
even the casinos are asking for a government bailout today!
Bars, clubs, restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses are closing.
Some won’t be back. Some will be bankrupt. Employees won’t get paid.
There weren’t any retail executives or corporate shills at the conference today.

And California is closed, Washington is closed,
Oregon is closed, New York is closed, and more states are closed.
Curfews, Executive Orders, State and Local Regulations for the Public Good!
San Francisco is on LOCKDOWN for 3 weeks! People can’t even go outside.
MGM and other hotel/casinos in Las Vegas have closed, but some are still open!
(Open: Caesars Resorts, Treasure Island, Tropicana, Venetian/Palazzo and the Strat)
Walt Disney World had a big closing night party with a huge crowd! BOOOOOO!
Ohio Health Dept cancelled the Tuesday Primary Election – postponed until June!
Canada and Europe instituted TRAVEL BANS (but not on US Citizens of course).
The Royal Shakespeare Company cancelled all shows! (London, Stratford & touring)
The 146th Kentucky Derby postponed from May 2nd to September 5th, 2020!
Most everyone else cancelled or postponed events today, if they hadn’t already yet.
Trump ordered “health screenings” at the major airports without a plan!
Huge Crowds! People were lined up for hours at the airports in close proximity!

AND THE UNITED STATES IS NOT PREPARED FOR THIS CRISIS!

MONDAY NIGHT AT THE HOME OFFICE!
Rainy day in Los Angeles and everything is closed. F*ck, we don’t want to go out.
Tuesday is actually DAY SIX of our self-isolation!
We had a general appointment at the hospital last Wednesday and there were a lot of sick people there, and that was a week ago. We decided to social distance ourself after that experience, and have only been out twice since to pick up food and run an errand.
Monday night we cooked dinner.
On The Menu: Big pot of chili, served with cheese, chopped onion, tortilla chips and a raw veggie plate, with cran-raspberry-orange juice to drink – stay home, stay healthy!

MARCH 1, 2020
(we posted this Blog on March 4, 2020 at 11pm)

On this date in 1973, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was released.

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

All that you touch And all that you see
All that you taste All you feel
And all that you love And all that you hate
All you distrust All you save
And all that you give And all that you deal
And all that you buy, beg, borrow or steal
And all you create And all you destroy
And all that you do And all that you say
And all that you eat And everyone you meet
And all that you slight And everyone you fight
And all that is now And all that is gone
And all that’s to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

The Dark Side of the Moon is the 8th studio album by Pink Floyd.
Recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios from May 1972 – January 1973
Engineered by Alan Parsons, and mixed with the help of producer Chris Thomas.
The famous album cover was created by English graphic designer George Hardie
(with input from Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis).

Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon: A Piece for Assorted Lunatics’
premiered at the Brighton Dome on January 20th, 1972.
And the album spent 937 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200!

30713886_2224118957614658_4811858256362209280_n
“Money” was Pink Floyd’s first Top 20 single in the United States. It reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1973. The 7/4 time signature (except for during the guitar-solo when it changes to 4/4), the iconic Roger Waters bass riff, David Gilmore’s ripping guitar lead, the saxophone solo by Dick Parry, and the sound loop made of cash registers and coins make it memorable and a true rock and roll masterpiece!

“There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it’s all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the sun.” – Abbey Road Doorman Gerry O’Driscoll

Tidal forces have slowed down the Moon’s rotation and so, the same side always faces Earth, a phenomenon called tidal locking. The other side, most of which is never visible from Earth, is therefore called the ‘Far Side of the Moon’.

Kilroy Was Here!

Kilroy Was Here!

kilroy

“Kilroy Was Here” engraved on the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C.

“Maybe you’ve bumped into Kilroy. He’s a bald (or balding) gentleman with a big nose, drawn peeking over a wall. Next to him is usually the phrase “Kilroy was here.” He can be found all over the world, and went viral long before social media or the Internet were around, finding his way through the theaters of war with American troops during World War II. (One of his most daring appearances may have been at the Potsdam Conference in 1945. During the summit, Harry Truman, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin had exclusive use of a VIP bathroom. One day, Stalin reportedly used the facilities, and came out demanding to know from one of his aides who Kilroy was, having found the drawing on one of the walls.)”

“Kilroy Was Here” is a WWII slogan and graffiti by the American Army, the drawing based on the British “Mr Chad”, and sometimes coupled with images of pregnant women.

1940s Vintage WWII “Kilroy Was Here” Hartland Plastics Pregnant Girl Figurine

“Kilroy doesn’t appear to have originated entirely with U.S. servicemen, though. A similar doodle, known as Mr. Chad, was scrawled throughout Britain as a comment on shortages and rations during the war. Chad was similar in appearance to Kilroy, but was accompanied by a different message: “Wot? No tea?” (or whatever other goods were in short supply at the moment). Chad predates Kilroy by a few years, and may have been the created by British cartoonist George Chatterton in the late 1930s. As best as anyone can tell, at some point during the war, American soldiers borrowed Mr. Chad’s image and married it to their own name and phrase, ‘Kilroy was here.'”

Kilroy became the U.S. super-GI who had already been wherever American soldiers went. It became a challenge for the troops to place the logo in the most unlikely places imaginable (on top of Mt. Everest and the Statue of Liberty, on the underside of the Arch De Triumphe and even scrawled in the dust on the moon)

Wisconsin Historical Markers: The Highground WWII Tribute: Kilroy Was Here

“If the man in the drawing was a variation of Mr. Chad, then where did the name Kilroy come from? While the Oxford English Dictionary writes Kilroy off as a mythical person, dozen of real people claimed to be the doodle’s namesake in 1946, when the American Transit Association (ATA) held a radio contest to establish the origin of the phrase. One of them was James J. Kilroy, who worked as at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts during the war inspecting the work done by others on the tanks and hulls of warships. As Kilroy explained to the ATA:

I started my new job with enthusiasm, carefully surveying every inner bottom and tank before issuing a contract. I was thoroughly upset to find that practically every test leader [the head of a work crew] I met wanted me to go down and look over his job with him, and, when I explained to him that I had already checked the job and could not spare the time to crawl through one of those tanks again, he would accuse me of not having looked the job over. I was getting sick of of being accused of not looking the jobs over and one day as I came through the manhole of a tank i had just surveyed, I angrily marked with yellow crayon on the tank top, where the tester could see it, ‘Kilroy was here.’ The following day, a test gang leader approached me with a grin on his face and said, ‘I see you looked my job over.’ I nodded in agreement.

Kilroy provided the ATA with corroborating statements from men he worked with at the shipyard, and said that he assumed that shipyard workers who had seen his mark and then joined the military took the phrase with them and began writing it in Europe. He won the contest and the grand prize, a full-size trolley street car. Just a few days before Christmas, the 12-ton car was delivered to Kilroy’s home in Halifax, MA, where it was attached to the house and used as living space for six of his nine children.”

“Kilroy Was Here” is written in two locations on the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

I’ve Been Everywhere Man!

I’ve Been Everywhere Man!
And now for a little traveling music…

e6ca841476b1b6dda30629fd5aba387d

Hank Snow “I’ve Been Everywhere!” (1962) produced by Chet Atkins
performed on the National Life “Grand Ole Opry” in 1965:

“I’ve been everywhere, man/I’ve been everywhere, man/
Crossed the deserts bare, man/I’ve breathed the mountain air, man/
Travel, I’ve had my share, man/I’ve been everywhere!”

I’ve Been Everywhere is a song which was written by Australian country singer Geoff Mack in 1959 and made popular by Lucky Starr in 1962. The song as originally written listed Australian towns. Original singer Lucky Starr released an EP called “Lucky’s Been Everywhere” that contained four different versions: United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

The North American version (with cities in United States and Canada) was sung by Canadian Clarence Eugene “Hank” Snow RIP (May 9, 1914 – December 20, 1999 and he became an American citizen in 1958), “I’ve Been Everywhere” was a number-one country hit in 1962 for “The Singing Ranger”. It was also sung by Australian singer Rolf Harris with English and Scottish cities in 1963 and by John Hore (later known as John Grenell) with New Zealand cities in 1966.

Hank Snow was a gifted songwriter and was elected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1978, and the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and the Nova Scotia Music Hall of Fame in 1979. In Canada, he was voted the top country music performer ten times and inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1985. A victim of child abuse, he established the Hank Snow International Foundation For Prevention Of Child Abuse and Neglect in 1976.

NOTE: In 1954 Hank Snow persuaded the directors of the Grand Ole Opry to allow a young Elvis Presley to appear on stage. Snow used Elvis as his opening act and introduced him to Colonel Tom Parker. In August 1955, Snow and Parker formed the management team Hank Snow Attractions and signed a contract with Presley but soon Snow was out and Parker had control of Elvis.

The Battle of New Orleans (as imagined) by Edward Percy Moran 1910

“In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in a town in New Orleans”

The Battle of New Orleans was the final major battle of the War of 1812.
It was fought between January 8 and January 18, 1815.

The Battle of New Orleans

Americans commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson (the future President of the United States) fought the British commanded by Admiral Alexander Cochrane and General Edward Pakenham. Pakenham and his second-in-command, Major General Samuel Gibbs, were both fatally wounded by artillery fire during the battle while on horseback.

The Death of General Pakenham – The Battle of New Orleans

The Americans had constructed three lines of defense to protect New Orleans, the first about 4 miles from the city along the Rodriguez Canal (from the Mississippi River to the cypress swamp). The British advanced early in the morning under the cover of fog. The fog lifted, leaving them exposed in the open and easy targets for the American artillery.

There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin’

In just twenty-five minutes, the British casualties totaled 700 killed, 1400 wounded and 500 were taken prisoner (after the battle ~500 British soldiers who pretended to be dead surrendered). American losses were only seven (7) killed and six (6) wounded.

“Yeah they ran through the briers and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn’t go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn’t catch ’em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!”

The Treaty of Ghent was signed in Ghent, Belgium on December 24, 1814. The Treaty was approved by British Parliament and signed by the Prince Regent (the future King George IV) on December 30, 1814. It took a month for the news to reach the United States during which time the Battle of New Orleans was fought. The treaty was ratified by the US Senate on February 17, 1815.

Twelfth Night!

Twelfth Night!
January 6, 2017

“On the twelfth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me

Twelve Drummers Drumming!”

“If music be the food of love, play on!”
-Duke Orsino Twelfth Night Act I, scene I by William Shakespeare

Nevermind the religion…
Twelfth Night on January 6th has always been the date we use to mark the end of the winter Holiday Season. Also, it’s the name of a Shakespeare play that we like. And if they’re going to sell Christmas for 3 months beforehand, we should get to appreciate and celebrate the entire Twelve Days of Christmas! This year (2017) Twelfth Night (January 6th) falls on a Friday, so we get to extend the holiday for one more weekend, even though we’re expecting a monster storm to hit hard in Los Angeles Saturday through Monday.

Originally a Catholic holiday, the Feast of the Epiphany, the actual Elizabethan festival of Twelfth Night became a day of revelry. Servants dressed as their masters, men dressed as women and women as men. The festive ritual and role reversal was based on the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia. It involved the antics of a Lord of Misrule, who before leaving his temporary position of authority, would call for entertainment, songs and mummery: comedic plays performed by costumed amateur actors (traditionally all male) at feasts and functions in exchange for money and/or food.

“Some are born great, some achieve greatness,
and some have greatness thrown upon them.”
– Feste, the Clown

Shakespeare’s comedic play “Twelfth Night, or What You Will” was written to be performed as a Twelfth Night entertainment. The earliest known performance took place at Middle Temple Hall on Candlemas night, February 2, 1602, the formal end of Christmastide in England. It may have been staged a year earlier in a private performance for Elizabeth I before the Court at Whitehall Palace on Twelfth Night, January 6th, 1601.

The influence of English folk tradition can be found in the play, particularly in Feste the clown’s songs and dialogue. Many elements are reversed in the tradition of Twelfth Night: a woman dressing as a man, and a servant imagining that he can become a nobleman. Shakespeare also chose to fictionalized Illyria, an ancient region in southern Europe on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, as the romantic setting for the story.

The Wisdom of Feste the Clown:jester-with-puppet

“Well, God give them wisdom that have it; and those
that are fools, let them use their talents.”

“Many a good hanging prevents a bad marriage”

“Foolery, sir, does walk about the orb like the sun,
it shines every where.”

“Better a witty fool than a foolish wit.”

“There is no darkness but ignorance.”

Feste’s Song (at the conclusion of Act V):

“When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.
But when I came to man’s estate,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
’Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate,
For the rain it raineth every day.
But when I came, alas! to wive,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
By swaggering could I never thrive,
For the rain it raineth every day.
But when I came unto my beds,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
With toss-pots still had drunken heads,
For the rain it raineth every day.
A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
But that’s all one, our play is done,
And we’ll strive to please you every day.”
