The 145th Kentucky Derby 2019

The 145th Kentucky Derby – May 4, 2019
“May the Fourth Be With You!”

ky-derby

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race for three-year-old thoroughbreds, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May. The race is one and a quarter miles at Churchill Downs.  The race is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” for its approximate duration, and is also called “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winning horse.

“I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May….”

Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky, USA
Horse racing in Kentucky began in 1789, at the first race course in Lexington.
In 1875, Churchill Downs “Home of the Kentucky Derby” opened in Louisville.
The Kentucky Derby is the  longest continually running sporting event in the USA.
The racetrack occupies 147 acres and features a one-mile dirt racetrack and a seven furlong turf racetrack.

The Twin Spires, the symbol of the racetrack, on top the grandstands, are the most recognizable architectural feature of Churchill Downs. The spires were built in 1895, designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez.

“The sun shines bright on my ol’ Kentucky home….”
“My Old Kentucky Home” became the official state song of Kentucky in 1928.
In 1986 the word “darkies” was changed to “people”.

RUN FOR THE ROSES
Jerry Garcia

Run, run, run for the roses
Quicker it opens, the sooner it closes
Man, oh, man, oh, friend of mine
All good things in all good time
Reach for the sun, catch hold of the moon
They’re both too heavy but what can you do?
Reach for the stars, smack into the sky
You don’t want to live but you’re chicken to die
Oh, you’re chicken to die
Run, run, run for the roses
Quicker it opens, the sooner it closes
Man, oh, man, oh, friend of mine
All good things in all good time
Run for the money, caught short on the rent
Big ideas but the cash’s all spent
The trouble with love is its other face
You just want the club but you don’t want the race
No, you don’t want the race
Run, run, run for the roses
Quicker it opens, the sooner it closes
Man, oh, man, oh, friend of mine
All good things in all good time

THE RACE IS ON
Don Rollins

I feel tears wellin’ up
Cold and deep inside
Like my heart’s sprung a big break
And a stab of loneliness sharp and painful
That I may never shake
Now, you might say that I was takin’ it hard
Since you wrote me off with a call
But don’t you wager that I’ll hide the sorrow
When I may break right down and bawl
Now the race is on
And here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are goin’ to the inside
My tears are holdin’ back
They’re tryin’ not to fall
My heart’s out of the runnin’
True love’s scratched for another’s sake
The race is on and it looks like heartache
And the winner loses all
One day I ventured in love
Never once suspectin’
What the final result would be
How I lived in fear of wakin’ up each mornin’
And findin’ that you’re gone from me
There’s ache and pain in my heart
For today was the one I hated to face
Somebody new came up to win her
And I came out in second place

The Mint Julep, an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint and a sugar syrup, is the traditional beverage of the race. The historic drink can be served in an ice-frosted silver julep cup, but most Churchill Downs patrons sip theirs from souvenir glasses (first offered in 1939 and available in revised form each year since) printed with all previous Derby winners. Also, Burgoo, a thick stew of beef, chicken, pork and vegetables, is a popular Kentucky dish served at the Derby.

“I must….descant a little upon the mint-julep, as it is, with the thermometer at 100 degrees F., one of the most delightful and insinuating potations that ever was invented, and may be drunk with equal satisfaction when the thermometer is as low as 70 degrees.”
–
Captain Frederick Marryat’s diary (1838)

Derby Day! Have a Mint Julep!

HOT TIP:
Watch the Horses! (from the Churchill Downs website)

As with any athlete, physical appearances are an important factor in sizing up competition. Horse racing is no different, and what your eyes tell you about the horse can be a helpful tool in betting. Here’s just a few tips on what to look for as the horses come into the Paddock, but remember that, like your mom always said, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” It’s difficult to make judgments based solely on appearance.

  1. Ears – If the horse’s ears are pricked, meaning they are large and pointed up, and its head is high and confident, you can assume that the horse is alert, aware of their surroundings, and ready to race. You don’t want to bet on a horse that’s ears are flattened back, or hanging its head low and inattentive.
  2. Hair – Like humans, a good hair day goes a long way! While the horses are in the Paddock, take a good look at their hair. A nice shiny coat is an indication that the horse is in good condition; it’s a general sign of the horse’s health and well-being.
  3. Muscle Definition – Most super-star athlete have prominent muscles and horses are no different. Be sure to look for nice, toned muscles around the horse’s chest and rib cage area. You want to bet on a horse that has defined muscles near their rib cage, and isn’t overweight or carrying too much fat.
  4. Nerves – It’s natural to have some nerves before competition, but over anxious horses aren’t necessarily a good bet. Look at the horse’s behavior in the paddock, and look closely at the sweat on his/her coat. If the horse is too fidgety or sweating too much, then the horse may be wasting too much energy before it has even hit the racetrack.

Other Factors to Consider:
The odds of winning, race history, work-outs, the jockey, the trainer, expert advice, statistical records, post position, track condition, weather, and even the horse’s birthdate.

Have Fun!

Not every wager has to be a brain teaser! Plenty of fans win big by randomly picking a horse. Some people choose their lucky number, others draw a number out of a hat, and some select their favorite color jockey silk or favorite horse name. There are lots of fun ways to handicap a horse race, so choose the best method that works for you!

Nikola Tesla RIP (July 10, 1856 – January 7, 1943)

Nikola Tesla was a genius Serbian-American inventor, scientist, electrical and mechanical engineer, and futurist from Smiljan, Croatia.  There is a lot of information and history available online and in your local library, so we aren’t going to review his many accomplishments and inventions here. He did predict smart phones in 1926:

“We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket.” – Nikola Tesla, 1926

“BING!”

“Ned… Ryerson. “Needlenose Ned”? “Ned the Head”? C’mon, buddy. Case Western High. Ned Ryerson: I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson: got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn’t graduate? Bing, again. Ned Ryerson: I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore? Well?”

“Ned?”

February 2nd is always Groundhog Day!

“Don’t drive angry!”

The Groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as  the woodchuck (aka chuck, wood-shock, groundpig, whistlepig, whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk and, among French Canadians, siffleux), is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots.

“There is no way that this winter is *ever* going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don’t see any other way out. He’s got to be stopped.

“You want a prediction about the weather, you’re asking the wrong Phil. I’ll give you a winter prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life.”

Punxsutawney is the largest incorporated municipal borough in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. The largest Groundhog Day celebration in the United States takes place every February 2nd at Gobbler’s Knob with Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog, who predicts the weather. According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If Phil doesn’t see his shadow, there will be an “early spring.”

1886 was the first time that Groundhog Day appeared in the Punxsutawney newspaper and February 2, 1887, was the first official ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob.

2019: Punxsutawney Phil predicts an “EARLY SPRING”!

“This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.”

2019: EARLY SPRING!

“When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.”

Phil is kept in a special enclosure at the town library. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle takes care of Phil year-round and they script the Groundhog Day ceremonies in advance, with the decision on whether he’ll see his shadow made in advance.

logo-pgc
NOTE:
There is only one Punxsutawney Phil, and all other groundhogs are impostors!

Groundhog Day is rooted in a Celtic and Germanic tradition and the pagan holiday of Imbolc, also known as Candlemas. When German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania, they transferred the tradition to the local wildlife, replacing hedgehogs with groundhogs.

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Come, Winter, have another flight;
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Go Winter, and come not again.

“Groundhog Day” is a 1993 comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and stars Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a TV weatherman caught in a time loop during an assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event, repeatedly reliving the same day.
NOTE: The film was shot in Woodstock, Illinois, not Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

“Groundhog Day, The Musical” is also musical comedy stage play with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, and book by Danny Rubin. Based on the 1993 film of the same name.

Pic of the Day 13-MAY-13: Central Park, New York City, NY

ALICE IN WONDERLAND – Central Park, New York City, NY

“This sculpture is for children and meant to be climbed on!”

Alice and her cast of storybook friends found their way to Central Park in 1959, when philanthropist George Delacorte commissioned this bronze statue as a gift to the children of New York City. Inspired by the zany characters of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland, the sculpture was also meant as a tribute to his late wife, Margarita, who read Alice to their children. Engraved around the statue are lines from his nonsensical poem, The Jabberwocky.

The sculpture is a favorite among children, who love to climb atop it and explore its varied textures and hiding spaces. Through the years, thousands of tiny hands have literally polished parts of its patina surface smooth.

Created by the Spanish-born American sculptor José de Creeft, the piece depicts Alice holding court from her perch on the mushroom. The host of the story’s tea party is the Mad Hatter, a caricature of George Delacorte. The White Rabbit is depicted holding his pocket watch, and a timid dormouse nibbles a treat at Alice’s feet.

The United States Capitol, the meeting place of the U.S. Congress, in Washington D.C. sits atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall.  Like the federal buildings for the executive and judicial branches, it is built in the distinctive neoclassical style and has a white exterior.  The Capitol Grounds cover approximately 274 acres, with the grounds proper consisting mostly of lawns, walkways, streets, drives, and planting areas.
