Summer in Los Angeles! ‘Tis the Season for Hot Pursuits & Car Chases!

Summer in Los Angeles! ‘Tis the Season for Hot Pursuits & Car Chases!

Yesterday there were two car chases involving the Los Angeles Police Department within an hour. The first was only broadcast for a little while, but was KRAZY out of control.  He was driving like a madman and had a couple of collisions along the way, almost hitting a pedestrian or two, until the suspect lost control making a turn on a surface street and crashed head-on into a telephone pole and steel fence.

Suspect in Custody:

Tiene un accidente!

And the second one was over before the helicopter arrived, with the suspect surrendering after running from the San Fernando Valley to Central LA.

Suspect in Custody:

Over before it began….

Two hot pursuits on TV in a hour is a good chase day, and there were also televised pursuits on Monday night and Tuesday night too.

BIG THANKS to the news and the helicopter pilots and reporters!
BIG THANKS to the LAPD for their hard work!

NOTE: The Police have helicopters and radios in addition to guns and a gang of armed uniformed (and undercover) soldiers. Chances are good you will go to jail if you attempt to run from them. However, everyday people still take their chances and for that we thank them for the entertainment.

Free Lunch Friday at the new Karl Strauss Brewing Co. in DTLA!

FREE LUNCH at the new Karl Strauss Brewing Co. in Downtown Los Angeles! (DTLA)

We were invited via email to a FREE meal on Friday!

One of the best perks of writing this Blog is that occasionally we are invited to experience cool events for free! “Training Day” at the new Karl Strauss Brewing Co. which just opened at 600 Wilshire in DTLA was a good one. Normally we wouldn’t make the trip and deal with traffic and parking downtown for just a free lunch, but we already had an appointment at the LA Auto Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday at 2pm! Bazinga!

15134734_1567597469933480_238076887190066121_n

Free Lunch at the Karl Strauss Brewing Co. in DTLA

We had a reservation for noon and traffic was good up until Hollywood Blvd, then it was stop and go into downtown at 11am as usual… we called from the car and let them know we might be late. We found street parking at a meter, walked a couple of blocks, arrived at ten minutes past noon and we were immediately seated by the hosts.

As you can see from the pics, it was busy and a lot of folks were enjoying a free lunch. They had also invited people who work in the neighborhood to sample the menu gratis. The service was excellent! There were a lot of very friendly people working hard and they were obviously going full speed for “Training Day”. So, I’ll take my hat off to Management for having a well trained and motivated staff, and have no complaints and only compliments about the service.

The “Training Day”Menu:

On The Menu: crispy brussel sprouts, salami/hard-boiled egg/cashews/apple plate, a Big Beer Burger with cheese and bacon, fries, an iced tea and a “Chocolate On Tap” (brownie/ice cream/whipped cream/chocolate and caramel sauce) for dessert!

NOTE: Traffic and Parking Sucks Downtown! We got lucky and after driving around downtown for awhile we found a meter a couple blocks from the restaurant. At $0.25 for every 5 minutes we paid for an hour and a half with quarters (the meters also take credit and debit cards for payment) and walked over for lunch. Use caution and always be aware when walking around Downtown Los Angeles, even during the day, because there have been numerous violent incidents involving the homeless, drug addicts and mentally ill individuals!

Best views in Los Angeles?

IMG05640-20130703-1200

Downtown Los Angeles from up high!

Q: Best views in Los Angeles? We will be visiting LA and want to take in the views! Ocean views, city views..from restaurants, hotels, parks, etc. Where are the best places to take some photos in LA? Thanks!

A: Great views of Los Angeles day or night?

The Standard and Skybar on Sunset Blvd and the Rooftop Bars/Pool Decks at the London West Hollywood Hotel, Montage Beverly Hills and Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive all have great views along with cocktails and food.

Nice views of Downtown at WP24 from the 24th floor bar and 25th floor restaurant (the WP stands for Wolfgang Puck), both the Elevate Lounge and the Rooftop at The Standard Downtown LA have excellent views.

If you can get into City Club on Bunker Hill (a private club on the top of the Wells Fargo building) there’s a men’s restroom with the best view!

The Music Center plaza has great views of DTLA, Cityhall and the DWP Building. The dancing fountains, the PEACE statue, and the architecture of Disney Hall, the Ahmanson, Mark Taper Forum and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion provide great scenery.

There’s a picnic area at the top of the Hollywood Bowl that has great views and it’s open during the day as a city park. You might also catch a (free) rehearsal if it’s the musical season.

Visit the Getty Museum for amazing views and amazing art. FREE just pay $10 for parking. Open late on Fridays.

Take a slow drive along Mulholland Drive for great views of the San Fernando Valley and West L.A. day or night. There are numerous turnouts and vista points between Hayvenhurst and Runyon Canyon Park.

Free things to do in Los Angeles?

Q: My girlfriend and I are traveling to LA for 6 days and we would like to know what free or cheap things there are to do in Los Angeles? We are kind of on a budget! We would also like to find out the best mode of transportation and areas to stay in!

A: “Cheap” thrills in L.A.? There’s so much stuff you can do that is free or “on the cheap” in Los Angeles! The Getty Museum is FREE, it cost $10-15 to park.

The Beaches in Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach are FREE, pay only for parking.

Griffith Park and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area have hundreds of miles of hiking trails. Parking and park fees vary. There are also many other places in L.A. for hiking, biking, picnicking, etc.

There are also any number of free public parks and other unique spaces to visit! Bergamot Station and The Brewery Artist Loftshave art galleries in addition to numerous other galleries throughout the city. Check and see if you’ll be in town for “FREE MUSEUM DAY” which varies by location, and some museums are always FREE, but alway encourage donations. The museums also have relatively inexpensive entry fees.

Visit the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Pier, Downtown Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, NoHo Arts District, Universal CityWalk, Old Pasadena, Venice Beach Boardwalk, Hollywood and West Hollywood. No entrance fees. Pay for parking and other activities.

UCLA, USC – University of Southern California, Art Center College of Design, California Institute of the Arts and other colleges have museums, art galleries and events that are also worth looking into too.

See my other answers for more things to do in Los Angeles!

I recommend that you rent a car rather than uber/lyft/taxi/public transport if you want to see and do a lot while you’re here. You really need a car to navigate the city.

Where is the walk of fame and how far is it from the airport in L.A.?

Q: This is my first time to LA and I was wondering where the walk of fame is and how far is it from the airport?

A: Where is the “Walk of Fame”? Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood!

The Walk of Fame runs from LaBrea to Gower and up Vine to the Capitol Records Building. You can see the stars’ hands and feet in concrete in the courtyard of (Grauman’s) Mann’s Chinese Theater, visit the Kodak Theatre and shop at Hollywood & Highland. Also in the immediate vicinity are Ripley’s, Madame Tussaud’s, Max Factor and the Hollywood Wax Museums. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the El Capitan Theatre and the Jimmy Kimmel Live studio/offices are just across the boulevard. There are also many restaurants, clubs, bars, retail and tourist gift shops in the neighborhood. The Musso and Frank Grill, Frolic Room, AVALON Hollywood (the old Hollywood Palace Theater), Pantages Theatre and The Egyptian Theatre are all very historic spots along the Walk of Fame.

How far is it from the airport?

Los Angeles International Airport in Inglewood is far away. And depending on the time of day, traffic and your chosen route, it can take 20 minutes or two hours. The LA Flyaway recently started a Hollywood Shuttle, but it’s timeliness because of traffic has been problematic.

Bob Hope Airport in Burbank is closer and the 170 and 101 freeways provide a direct route which can take 20 minutes or an hour depending on time of day, traffic or an event in Hollywood or at the Hollywood Bowl.

Best Steakhouse in Los Angeles?

Q: My first question would be about food! I’m searching for the best steakhouse that’s at par with CUT. Aside from Lawry’s, Morton’s, Mastro’s and Ruth Chris, do you know of any? Thanks in advance!

A: Great Steakhouse in Los Angeles? So many… here are a few:

BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood and Santa Monica

Craft in Century City (and CraftSteak at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas)

Le Sanglier in Tarzana, Larsen’s Steakhouse & Delmonico’s Steak and Lobster House in Encino and the Valley Inn in Sherman Oaks

Arnie Morton’s The Steakhouse – Burbank and Woodland Hills

and the Côte de Boeuf at Mélisse is exceptional!

The typical great night in bars and then club in LA

Q: We’ll be a bunch of friends and we wanna experience the now famous ‘LA Style’ nightlife! So let us know, no restriction at all. Where could we start to drink? Then have a cool dinner? Then drink again? And finally be in a nightclub all night long? Or in a house? or swimming pool? or… I don’t know, you’re the one. Thanks!

A: So you want a great night bar/club hopping in Los Angeles? I suggest you pick the nightclub first depending on your taste in music, atmosphere and cost. Check the LA Weekly for listings and reviews.

Pick your location: Hollywood or Downtown Los Angeles, Silver Lake or Koreatown (Los Angeles), West Hollywood or Beverly Hills, Santa Monica or Culver City? Staying in one area is easier than trying to motor from place to place on a busy night.

There are any number of bars and restaurants in all of the locations, again depending on your taste in food and drinks, atmosphere and cost. Pick your restaurant, most have a bar or beverage service. Pick your poison, designer cocktails or craft beer, absinthe or single malt whiskey?

Cover charge, cost of drinks or bottle service, parking and tips add up quickly. Choose nearby bars and restaurants, within walking distance if possible, to avoid traffic, parking charges and/or a DUI. Designate a sober driver or get a limo. Choose a supper club where dining at the restaurant gets you admission to the club.

Contact local club promoters and restaurants and let them know you have a group party, and see what they’ll offer you! VIP treatment, free drinks, bottle service, and other perks can be negotiated with a large party. Make sure you have reservations and are “On the List” because waiting in line to get in sucks.

Nice LA beach for swimming in July

Q: I will be staying in the Hollywood area for 5 days in July.  Any recommendations on a nice beach for swimming?  Thanks.

A: I recommend Zuma Beach and Malibu Beach north on Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica. There’s no beach close to Hollywood! Drive Sunset Boulevard from Hollywood to the Pacific Ocean and you’ll pass through West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, Beverly Hills, UCLA, Brentwood Villageand the Pacific Palisades on your way. When you get to PCH turn right and head up the coast to Malibu. Avoid “rush hour” or you’ll get caught in heavy traffic!

Bachelorette in LA

Q: Hi – I am looking for some advice on a killer bachelorette weekend in LA. 7 of us will be traveling together, and I would love recommendations on a good location, any bars or events, as well as hotels. At lot of us are from cities that provide accessible public transit – so if possible, we’d rather save on cab money and be in a central location. I’ve heard West Hollywood and Los Feliz are good neighborhoods. Has anyone had luck finding a hotel that accommodates a large party like ours? We would ideally like to spend about $1K for the two nights. One random note – the bachelorette really likes Harry Potter. Know of any “entertainers” that could accommodate? Thanks!

A: So you want a great Bachelorette weekend in Los Angeles? I suggest you pick the hotel and nightclubs first depending on your taste in music, atmosphere and cost. Talk to the Sales Manager at the Hotel to arrange a Group Rate! Check the LA Weekly for club listings and reviews.

Pick your location: Hollywood or Downtown Los Angeles, Silver Lake or Koreatown, or Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, or Culver City Staying in one area is easier than trying to motor from place to place on a busy night.

There are any number of hotels, bars and restaurants in all of the locations, again depending on your taste in food and drinks, atmosphere and cost. Pick your restaurant, most have a bar or beverage service. Pick your poison, designer cocktails or craft beer, absinthe or single malt whiskey?

NOTE: Avoid going to Comedy Clubs, most hate bachelorette parties.

How many police officers does it take to arrest a naked woman? After leading the LAPD, CHP, LA Sheriffs and Pasadena Police on a 100mph chase from Glendale to Thousand Oaks to Simi Valley to Pasadena to DTLA for over 2 hours, the female driver parked her SUV in the alley and wandered around the street (and she tried to get in the club and she was interviewed by a guy with a camera who followed her around) for 20+ minutes before the first LAPD officer finally arrived to arrest her! Then she stripped off her clothes and at least 10 other LAPD units arrived to see the naked suspect in custody. Your tax dollars at work while skid row and the rest of DTLA is left unprotected.

First Police Unit arrives and she strips off all her clothes

She had an incident at a family gathering and tried to hit her parents with the car before ramming several other cars. When police arrived she took the family SUV on a high speed pursuit on the 134 freeway to the 101 freeway north to the 23 freeway to Simi Valley and the 118 freeway east to Pasadena and then through Chinatown and Skid Row and finally to the location where the car chase ended and the real insanity begins.

The original incident happened at around 10:30pm just in time for the 11 o’clock news, all of whom bailed on the chase in order to switch to network late-night programming, although the internet feeds continued.  Thankfully, CBS 2 and KCAL 9 internet stream carried it to its conclusion.

She parked the car in the alley, waited on the street, tried to get into a club, waited on the street, tried to get into the club again. Then a stringer arrived and interviewed her, then she wandered around the block trying to avoid the stringer and tried to get in the club again as other people came out of the club and got involved. She wasn’t having anything to do with them and wandered around the street some more trying to avoid the stringer.

She stands naked and surrenders to the First Police Unit

When the first Police officers arrived she ran back into the alley when she saw them, then came back onto the street and stripped off all her clothes and surrendered. The first officers on scene approached her carefully, and they had her “laser-sighted” with tasers and sidearms, and then took her into custody on the sidewalk. They handcuffed her and placed a flannel shirt or blanket over her as many other units arrived on scene to see the “Naked Suspect” now under control. After holding her on the sidewalk, she threw off the blanket and then they walked her over to another police vehicle and had to pull her into the backseat.

NOTE: Even after a 2 hour long pursuit with speeds as high as 100 mph, there were no police behind her in DTLA and no units responding to her location for 20+ minutes. She was obviously a danger to herself and others, and in addition to her crazy behavior at the cause of the chase, she could have killed someone during or after the pursuit.

From Laist.com:

“The saga began sometime around 10:30 p.m. in Pasadena, when police responded to a 9-1-1 call from the woman’s parents for assault with a deadly weapon. Before her parents called Pasadena police, 32-year-old Simone Gonzalez allegedly attempted to run both of them over with a car. KABC reports that Gonzalez also hurled a brick through a window at her parents’ house, and rammed ‘a few’ of the cars parked on the property.

Police responded and discovered a “verbal altercation” situation at the Pasadena home. Gonzalez fled briefly in the family’s SUV, but returned to the house shorty thereafter. Pasadena Police officers spotted the SUV near the house and began to pursue….

…Gonzalez was eventually spotted in downtown Los Angeles around 12:30 a.m., trying to get inside a bar close to the intersection of 3rd and Main streets. LAPD officers responded and attempted to take Gonzalez into custody, though by the time police arrived she had begun removing her clothing.

Though police called off the chase, stringers followed Gonzalez into downtown. Their cameras were rolling as she stripped, capturing a disjointed monologue. Asked why she was running from police, Gonzalez replied that she was the police. “Ran from what? Ran where, sir? I am a trained policeman…You are a legal a slave trader. I am with the police everywhere,” she said.

Her parents mentioned to KABC that Gonzalez has a history of mental illness. Pasadena Police eventually arrested her for assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, felony evading, and felony vandalism.”

So how many police officers does it take to finally arrest a naked woman in DTLA?

How many cops does it really take to arrest unarmed immigration protesters in DTLA?  There are 25 officers in the camera frame and many more in the vicinity!

How many cops does it take to arrest unarmed protesters in DTLA?

We support our local, state and federal law enforcement officers! We truly appreciate the difficult and dangerous job they do and the protection they provide! There are absolutely times when prompt response and overwhelming force are called for and officers are there on the scene. Here are pics from three different pursuits: the first, a morning rush-hour chase, ended at the Reseda Blvd exit of the 101 freeway when the “Armed Subject” turned left off the freeway and then made a u-turn to double back and got stuck in traffic. Note the CROSSFIRE situation at the end of the chase and the overwhelming law enforcement response. The second chase, a 16 year old girl led a dangerous high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle across south Los Angeles until the car was disabled and she surrendered. The third, a Monday morning chase that ended on  5 freeway north at Atlantic in Commerce. Notice the overwhelming response by local law enforcement and a quick arrest at the end of all three.

Someone’s got a bad case of the Mondays!

End of Police pursuit in Panorama City on ABC. The car is disabled with a flat tire. Police have the suspect surrounded and he’s sitting in the car filling balloons and huffing nitrous while they watch! Here’s a pic in case you couldn’t visualize it:

Downtown Los Angeles 2013

Well, I just found a draft of a Downtown Los Angeles Blog from 2013 and the pictures were all laid out with captions. So I thought for the third year anniversary I would work it up a little and publish it for your entertainment.

I was invited down to L.A. Live in DTLA for lunch and a private tour of the Grammy Museum courtesy of AEG. I was working a deal to package their events with travel and destination specific tours. At the time when this was written I was a newbie travel advisor and set this deal with AEG up for the agency immediately. This lunch meeting was to discuss all the details and I’ll write more on the outcome later in this Blog.

The day included freeway traffic in both directions from the San Fernando Valley, driving around DTLA, parking at Staples Center and L.A. Live, a nice lunch at Rock’N’Fish and a private tour of the Grammy Museum and the AEG offices.

Here’s the Blog and please note the pics were shot with a Blackberry camera.

NOTE: Dec. 10, 2015 – A 1964 Porsche 356 that once belonged to the rock singer Janis Joplin sold at auction for $1.76 million. The car had been expected to sell for between $400,000 and $600,000. The sale price includes a 10% commission for Sotheby’s auction house.

NOTE: As you can see, there was a lot of the Blog laid out but never finished.

The meeting was a great success! I had a terrific lunch and a private tour of the Grammy Museum. I was gifted a couple of FREE tickets to return another time on my own. I wasn’t able to tour the Staples Center because Rihanna was rehearsing for her concert that night (if I remember right, and we would get a private tour of Staples Center on my next visit). It was a good day downtown and they did comp my parking!

The deal included access to the Grammy Museum and the 200 seat performance space, AEG events at L.A. Live and Staples Center including the Kings, Clippers, and Stars games; the BET Experience and other concerts (including corporate CLUB BOXES) and the L.A. Galaxy soccer (fútbol) games. It was a major score! But, the best laid plans….la la la.

Echo Park – Downtown Los Angeles, California

“Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares and go
Downtown, things’ll be great when you’re
Downtown, no finer place for sure,
Downtown, everything’s waiting for you
Downtown!”

Downtown Los Angeles is the central area of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and features many of the city’s major arts institutions and sports facilities, sightseeing opportunities, a variety of skyscrapers and associated large multinational corporations, and an array of public art and unique shopping opportunities. Downtown Los Angeles is the hub of the city’s freeway network and Metro rapid transit system.

Staples Center, opened in 1999, has contributed immensely to the revitalization of Downtown, adding 250 events and nearly 4 million visitors per year to the neighborhood.  Since the opening of the Staples Center, the adjacent L.A. Live complex was completed, which includes the Nokia Theater, the Regency Theaters and the Grammy Museum.

Jose Marti Monument at Echo Park Lake – Los Angeles, California

“Man loves liberty, even if he does not know that he loves it. He is driven by it and flees from where it does not exist.” ~ Jose Marti

José Julián Martí Pérez  January 28, 1853 – May 19, 1895

Born in Havana, Cuba, he was a poet, an essayist, a journalist, a revolutionary, a philosopher, a translator, a professor, a publisher and a political theorist. His writings and political activity became a symbol for Cuba’s bid for independence against Spain in the 19th century and he is referred to as the “Apostle of Cuban Independence.”

“El que tenga patria que la honre, el que no, que la conquiste.” (“Honor your country if you have one; and if you do not have one, struggle for it.”)

“Con todos y para el bien de todos” (“With all, and for the good of all.”)

In 1976, the city designated the intersection of Park Ave and Echo Park Ave “José Martí Square,” (plaza) to honor the the Cuban community of Los Angeles. Sculptor Sergio López-Mesa created the bust of José Martí, a Cuban writer and champion of Latin American identity whose poem from the book “Versos Sencillos” (“Simple Verses”) inspired the lyrics for “Guantanamera,” the definitive protest song of Cuba.

More Jose Marti quotes:

“Liberty is the right of every man to be honest, to think and to speak without hypocrisy.”
“A grain of poetry suffices to season a century.”
“Others go to bed with their mistresses; I with my ideas.”
“It is necessary to make virtue fashionable.”
“The struggles waged by nations are weak only when they lack support in the hearts of their women.”
“Charm is a product of the unexpected.”
“The vote is a trust more delicate than any other, for it involves not just the interests of the voter, but his life, honor and future as well.”
“Man has to suffer. When he has no real afflictions, he invents some.”
José Martí was killed in battle against Spanish troops at the Battle of Dos Ríos in 1895.  He is buried in Cementerio Santa Efigenia in Santiago de Cuba.
“No me entierren en lo oscuro/ A morir como un traidor/ Yo soy bueno y como bueno/ Moriré de cara al sol.” (“Do not bury me in darkness / to die like a traitor / I am good, and as a good man / I will die facing the sun.”)

US Bank Tower, Pedal Boats on Echo Park Lake & Downtown Los Angeles, California

US Bank Tower, formerly the Library Tower and First Interstate Bank World Center, is a 1018 ft skyscraper at 633 West Fifth Street in Downtown Los Angeles. It’s the tallest building in California, the 11th tallest building in the United States, the tallest west of the Mississippi River and the 65th tallest building in the world. (or thereabouts…) It’s 73 stories tall with two parking levels below ground. Construction began in 1987 and finished in 1989. The building was designed by Henry N. Cobb and architectural firm Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. It cost $350 million to build.

The Lady of the Lake Statue, Echo Park Lake & Downtown Los Angeles, California

On a concrete peninsula with benches facing the water, is a fourteen-foot Art Deco-style female statue. The official name is “Nuestra Reina de Los Angeles” (“Our Queen of the Angels”) but most people know her simply as the “Lady of the Lake.” Rendered in poured concrete, it was created in 1934 by Ada May Sharpless with funding from the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP). It stands on a pedestal box with four bas-reliefs featuring the Hollywood Bowl, L.A. Harbor, the San Gabriel Mountains and the Central Library.

The “Wooden Bridge” at Echo Park Lake – Los Angeles, California

Possibly the Oldest Bridge in Los Angeles County, it was built in 1896. The bridge was originally all wood but was replaced with steel sometime before 1960. The bridge is currently closed to foot traffic and there are large locked steel gates at both ends.

Palm Trees at Echo Park Lake – Los Angeles, California

NOTE: The City of Los Angeles spent a lot of money to “rehab” the park and they did a great job! However, the HOMELESS problem remains. A homeless man was camped under a tree when I parked, and another homeless man was passed out on the steps of an outbuilding with his overflowing shopping cart parked nearby.
