The Man Burns in 2014!

Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. In this crucible of creativity, all are welcome……
Burning Man isn’t your usual festival. It’s a city wherein almost everything that happens is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the experience.

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

LAST YEAR WAS BETTER…. but we decided long ago that we weren’t going in 2018 and other circumstances have also prevented a possible last minute “grab and go” adventure.

This year’s Burning Man began with a huge BUMMER!

August 21, 2018 Statement on Police Activity on the Road to BRC:
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting intensive law enforcement operations on Highway 447 in Wadsworth and Nixon. Many of these stops progress into lengthy vehicle searches, and they are using dogs to inspect vehicles. We’ve been told this operation will continue throughout the week and possibly into next week, when the Burning Man event is officially underway….

“U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officers are stopping many vehicles traveling to the event. Reasons provided by officers for the traffic stops include: speeding, going too slow, not stopping at stop signs, crossing the centerline or even a tire touching the centerline, partially obscured license plates, and dim or non-functioning tail lights. These stops often involve police dogs and lengthy searches of vehicles. Many of our staff and volunteers report they were not breaking any traffic laws, but were stopped anyway.”

Harvey

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey wrote the Ten Principles in 2004

The 10 Principles of Burning Man

Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.

Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.

Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

MOVE BURNING MAN TO CALIFORNIA!

Move the Burning Man event to California and away from the BIA!

maxresdefault

Cuddeback Dry Lake Bed near Ridgecrest, California (not my pic)

There is a dry lakebed (Cuddeback Lake) near Ridgecrest, CA (BLM land) that could accomodate the Burning Man event. The economic impact of the event would be year round and millions of dollars for the county and state. The access and location would be much better than their current location and they wouldn’t have to deal with Nevada. I spoke with the CEO/President of the Chamber of Commerce and they would be interested in talking with Burning Man. Have a nice day.

UPDATE 10-22-18: So, yeah, it was a pretty dumb idea. But maybe someday….

LOVE YOUR MOTHER EARTH!

Earth (AKA “the World” or “the Globe”) is the third planet from the Sun and is the birthplace of humanity and the cradle of human civilization.

earth-day-2017-5650394117046272-s‘s Earth Day Doodle!

Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old. The oldest known rocks are about 4 billion years old (rocks older than 3 billion years are rare) and the oldest fossils of living organisms are less than 3.9 billion years old. With a radius of 3,959 miles, Earth is the biggest of the known terrestrial planets, and the fifth largest in our solar system.

17952696_1779166122109946_5749886090342499878_n

Planet Earth, Sol System, Milky Way Galaxy, Universe

71 Percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. Earth’s atmosphere is 77% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, with traces of argon, carbon dioxide and water (H20). Earth’s oceans have an average depth of about 2.5 miles and contains 97 percent of the planet’s water. Earth has a central (inner and outer) core, a rocky mantle and a solid crust.

The name “Earth” is at least 1,000 years old and it is the only planet whose name doesn’t come from from Greek or Roman mythology. The name is from Old English and Germanic origins and means “ground”.

Earth orbits the sun and completes one daily rotation every 23.9 hours. It takes 365.25 days to complete a one year trip around the sun.  The Earth’s axis is tilted 23.4 degrees to the plane of the planet’s orbit around the sun and this causes the cycle of seasons.

Earth is the only known planet that has a single moon. The moon is (an average distance of) 238,855 miles away from Earth.

We Can Run
by John Barlow & Brent Mydland

We don’t own this place though we act as if we did
It belongs to the children of our children’s kids
The actual owners haven’t even been born yet

But we never tend the garden and we rarely pay the rent
Most of it is broken and the rest of it is bent
Put it all on plastic and I wonder where we’ll be when the bills hit

We can run but we can’t hide from it
Of all possible worlds we only got one, we gotta ride on it
Whatever we’ve done we’ll never get far from what we leave behind
Baby we can run, run, run but we can’t hide

Well I’m dumping my trash in your back yard
Making certain you don’t notice really isn’t so hard
You’re so busy with your guns and all of your excuses to use them

Well it’s oil for the rich and babies for the poor
We’ve got everyone believing that more is more
If a reckoning comes maybe we’ll know what to do then

We can run but we can’t hide from it
Of all possible worlds we only got one, we gotta ride on it
Whatever we’ve done we’ll never get far from what we leave behind
Baby we can run, run, run but we can’t hide

All these complications seem to leave no choice
I heard the tongues of billions speak with just one voice
Saying just leave all the rest to me, I need it worse than you, you see
Then I heard the sound of one child crying

Today I went out walking in the amber wind
There’s a hole in the sky where the light pours in
I remember the days when I wasn’t afraid of the sunshine

But now it beats down on the ashphalt land
Like a hammering blow from God’s left hand
What little still grows
Cringes in the shade till the night-time

We can run but we can’t hide from it
Of all possible worlds we only got one, we gotta ride on it
Whatever we’ve done we’ll never get far from what we leave behind
Baby we can run, run, run but we can’t hide (….no, we can’t hide.)

READ THIS! Former National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis’ message regarding Trump:

READ THIS!

560709_10150644239038429_1556594351_n
From the Association of National Park Rangers (US)
Former National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis’ message regarding Trump:
16265304_10154671974088429_5576860841048156140_n

This morning former Director Jon Jarvis made this statement about recent events involving the National Park Service:

“I have been watching the Trump administration trying unsuccessfully to suppress the National Park Service with a mix of pride and amusement. The NPS is the steward of America’s most important places and the narrator of our most powerful stories, told authentically, accurately, and built upon scientific and scholarly research. The Park Ranger is a trusted interpreter of our complex natural and cultural history and a voice that cannot not be suppressed. Edicts from on-high have directed the NPS to not talk about “national policy”, but permission is granted to use social media for visitor center hours and safety. The ridiculousness of such a directive was immediately resisted and I am not the least bit surprised. So at Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta should we not talk about his actions to secure the rights to vote for African Americans in the south, or is that too “national policy”? At Stonewall National Monument in New York City, shall we only talk about the hours you can visit the Inn or is it “national policy” to interpret the events there in 1969 that gave rise to the LGBT movement? Shall we only talk about the historic architecture of the Washington, DC home of Alice Paul and Alva Belmont or is it too “national policy” to suggest their decades of effort to secure the rights of women can be linked directly to the women’s marches in hundreds of cities last weekend? And as we scientifically monitor the rapid decline of glaciers in Glacier National Park, a clear and troubling indicator of a warming planet, shall we refrain from telling this story to the public because the administration views climate change as “national policy”? These are not “policy” issues, they are facts about our nation, it is how we learn and strive to achieve the ideals of our founding documents. To talk about these facts is core to the mission of the NPS. During the Centennial of the National Park Service, we hosted over 300 million visitors (now that is huge) to the National Parks and most came away inspired, patriotic and ready to speak on behalf of the values we hold most dear. The new Administration would be wise to figure out how to support the National Park Service, its extraordinary employees and their millions of fans.”

NOTE: A freeze on federal government hiring was instituted on January 24, 2017 by executive order. The memo, which does not apply to military personnel, states that “no vacant positions existing at noon on January 22, 2017, may be filled and no new positions may be created, except in limited circumstances”

Trump put a freeze on federal government hiring, and it could seriously impact the National Park Service and the need to hire thousands of seasonal rangers and other employees for the summer! Beyond seasonal positions, there are many permanent positions that parks are trying to fill and people who have already been offered permanent jobs but haven’t begun working… this will definitely affect the visitor experience and park safety!

“O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties. Above the fruited plain!
America! America! G-d shed his grace on thee.”
– America the Beautiful
from a poem written by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893
(after a visit to Pikes Peak in Colorado)
music composed by Samuel A. Ward

Pikes Peak, named in honor of American explorer Zebulon Pike, is one of the highest summit of the Rocky Mountains in North America. The 14,115-foot mountain top is located in Pike National Forest, 12 miles southwest of downtown Colorado Springs. The summit of Pikes Peak is a high alpine environment with a polar climate due to its elevation. Snowfall is possible year round at the top and thunderstorms are common in the summertime. Pikes Peak, above 14000 feet, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

With the end of summer, I also have to end my “Summer Staycation” in the San Fernando Valley. It’s been great, although it’s been another extremely hot summer in Los Angeles.

Read my previous three previous Blogs about Burning Man!

I didn’t go to the Burning Man festival. I enjoyed it from the comfort of my home office, rather than brave the elements of the Nevada desert. And in fact, I was invited on a whole different kind of desert trip this weekend, and decided not to risk life and limb (literally) in northern Nevada.

Burning Man 2014 – The Temple Burn Epic Fail & More Playa Pics!

So disappointed with the ustream feed! The Man burned Saturday night and as per my previous blog it was a total failure. I was hopeful the Temple Burn on Sunday would be better.  It wasn’t, it was worse.

Burning Man 2014 - The Temple

Burning Man 2014 – The Temple

The Temple Burn Epic Fail

First, the music on the audio stream was incredibly inappropriate! Temple burn is a solemn ceremony, and the DJ showed ZERO RESPECT! I can’t even express how disrespectful it was. The DJ was even asking for listeners on the playa to bring him “a tasty adult beverage” on air during the Temple burn.  I hope karma finds him for his massive failure.

Second, the camera was zoomed out and out of focus, and the Temple burn was a little orange spot, even on my large monitor. They should use some of that Silicon Valley money and invest in decent broadcast equipment, coverage, and trained operators. FOCUS!!!!!

Again, thanks to everyone who made the webcast happen, with the exception of a DJ previously mentioned, we really appreciate your effort, but unfortunately EPIC FAIL! (x2)

Burning Man 2014 – The Man Burns Longtime!

Took the week off posting to the blog, but I’ve been armchair surfing the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert all week. Last night the Man burned, and smoldered, and smoked, and then finally fell.

Burning Man 2014 - Great Pic!

Burning Man 2014 – Great Pic! The Man and “Embrace” silhouetted against the desert sky

THE USTREAM WEBCAST COVERAGE SUCKED HARD!!! (and “F*ck your day!” if you think otherwise) YES I’M A CRITIC! And I’m going to trash the Ustream cast.

Someone suggested that if I wanted better coverage I should go out to the desert. I don’t disagree, and it would be really cool to be there, but alas I’m stuck here in Los Angeles sharing the experience with about 14000 people online (at peak viewing) and the camera operator doesn’t know how to focus the HD camera. There were 100% Technical Problems including not enough bandwidth and choppy streaming, MAJOR AUDIO PROBLEMS, loss of picture, loss of stream, terrible picture in picture that distracted from the burn, ZERO CREATIVITY!, and terrible camera technique. Learn how to FOCUS!

BEST MOMENT: At one point the picture cut to the guy operating the stream, a bearded hipster in coveralls, he looked up from the keyboard and saw that he was live on the web, made a great “surprise” face and then immediately switched the stream back. I hope someone got a screen shot of the guy’s video selfie, so we can post it!

Okay, so there you go. thanks to everyone who made the webcast happen, we really appreciate your effort, but unfortunately EPIC FAIL!

Burning Man 2014 – The Man Burns!

I watched the webcast and wasn’t the only person who thought the coverage sucked.

And here’s the big kicker: It took over an hour for The Man to burn. There were fireworks, and a great conflagration, and then another 45 minutes or more of “smoldering man”, “standing man” and “boring man” before the effigy actually collapsed.

A much better burn happened on Friday afternoon when they burned the “Embrace” art! There are great pictures and cool video online of the fire. Check it out!

On opening day Monday, heavy rain and hail muddied the playa and caused the organizers to close the gates due to BLM restrictions on vehicles. The gates may have been closed but the PARTY was in full force Monday night into Tuesday morning.
