Stan Lee RIP

Stan Lee (Stanley Martin Lieber) 1922-2018 RIP
Comic book writer, editor, and publisher.
Editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, and later the publisher and chairman.

Stan Lee (the Man) has died at age 95.
Thanks for the imagination and entertainment!
May the Four Winds blow him safely home.
“Nuff said.”

Sold my entire collection in the late 1990s. Mostly Marvel runs of X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Fantastic Four, The Avengers, The Defenders, Daredevil, Conan, Amazing Spiderman, and many more titles. Stan Lee was a childhood hero, long before there were any big budget movies. Still have a couple boxes here at the home office, some random books, a few collectors issues and 3 “Giant-Size” issues.

Still have a few books in the office….

Stan Lee attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx (New York) in the 1930s.

1930s: DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx

He began his comic book career as an office assistant and inkwell filler, at Timely Comics in New York in 1939 before it was renamed Marvel Comics. He served in World War II and returned to his job after the war.

1940s: Stan Lee in World War II – Assignment: “Playwright”

Beginning in the 1960s, Stan “The Man” Lee wrote a monthly column “Stan’s Soapbox” in Marvel’s Bullpen Bulletins. He ended each column with the catchphrase “Excelsior!” and it became his trademark motto. Written in 1968:

Money To Burn at Marvel Comics!

“He’s a comics legend, with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. When Marvel sold to Disney in 2010 for $4 billion, he personally pocketed a cool $10 million, and tours the world as its ambassador emeritus.” – Mark Ebner, Daily Beast

It was well known that Stan Lee has made a cameo appearance in every Marvel production (film, television, animation, etc.):

Stan Lee’s favorite appearance was as himself in Kevin Smith’s film “Mallrats”:

[Upon meeting Stan Lee]
Brodie : The Thing! Is his dork made out of orange rock like the rest of his body?
Stan Lee : I don’t know. It’s a superhero secret.

“Mallrats” starring Stan Lee!

Stan Lee’s final published essay appeared as the introduction to the book We Spoke Out: Comic Books and the Holocaust, by Neal Adams, Rafael Medoff, and Craig Yoe (IDW / Yoe Books, 2018). We Spoke Out features Holocaust-related comic book stories, with superheroes from Marvel: Captain America, the X-Men and Captain Marvel.

Introduction and Afterword by Stan Lee

Stan Lee died with an estimated worth (in dollars) of $50 – $70 million!
He is survived by his daughter JC Lee and a “questions of elder abuse” and mismanagement of his finances and other business affairs…..

November 16th – Statement from Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment:

“With great power there must also come — great responsibility!”

Doug Loves Movies Challenge 366!

Doug Loves Movies Challenge 366 for 2016!

Comedian Doug Benson invites his friends to sit down
and watch 366 movies in 365 days! @DougBenson

DOUG LOVES MOVIES! #DLMChallenge #366Movies #365Days #365Movies

Doug Benson (screenshot from Periscope)

So, we decided at the end of 2015 to accept the DougLovesMovies 366 Movies Challenge and we succeeded in watching well over 366 films (plus a few HBO & Netflix mini-series, too much election news coverage, the MLB Playoffs/WorldSeries and NFL Football Regular Season Games) in 2016!

We began the challenge on January 2nd and finished watching our “366th film” on December 30th. We kept a list as we watched, but ultimately forgot (for several reasons) to write some down. It wasn’t easy and we don’t recommend it, but we did it, it was fun and now we’re done with it.
