Where to Eat and Drink for Cheap in Las Vegas!

Where to Eat and Drink for Cheap in Las Vegas!

IMG08491-20131113-1753

Welcome to Las Vegas (copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Las Vegas, Nevada!
FOOD AND BEVERAGE

Are you hungry? Are you thirsty?
Do you want to eat? Do you want to drink?
Back in the day, it was all about “butts in the seats”
as one Pit Boss at Caesars Palace used to say to us.
Rooms, Food, Drinks, Cigars, Entertainment, ALL OF IT WAS COMPED!
It was all about GAMBLING and MONEY ON THE TABLE (or in the slot machine).
The casino winnings paid for everything, and the customer (PLAYER) was king!
And even if you lost your entire bankroll, you had a great time in Las Vegas.
And now, they “nickel and dime” you everywhere. Resort Fees. Paid Parking.
Entertainment Fees and Taxes. Upgrade Fees. Pool Fees. Reservation Fees.
AND WHAT THE FUCK IS THE DEAL WITH THE $20.00+ COCKTAILS?
Room rates fluctuate like airline ticket prices, and aggregators sell the leftovers.

And back in the day, the ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT Buffet, and $1.99 Steak & Eggs,
were draws to bring people into the casino and keep the players fed and inside.
But now Las Vegas is an International Dining Mecca! Cheap eats are hard to find.
FOOD and BEVERAGE is a major expense for any Las Vegas vacation.
It’s hard to find good food at good prices, but inexpensive dining options
outside the food court and not “fast food” are all around town!

NOTE: The Pricing and Hours of Operation may vary,
and are alway subject to change at any time for any reason.
Always check to see if the location is open, if a reservation is required,
(their pandemic requirements), and confirm the pricing ahead of time!
And then you won’t be surprised.

Additionally, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic,
some restaurants and bars are CLOSING PERMANENTLY!
We removed two from this list today because they just went out of business.

IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO TIP RIGHT,
YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO DRINK IN A BAR
OR EAT IN A RESTAURANT!

Go to a Liquor or Convenience Store
and eat and drink in your hotel room.

NOTE: Walgreens, CVS, and ABC Stores $2.00 – $5.00 Beer
are much cheaper than the hotel stores and gift shops.
You can find all kinds of prepackage food and snacks
(and more things you may need),
along with cheap beer, wine, booze, and bottled water,
at the Chain Stores on The Strip and Downtown.

TIP: Get a hotel/motel room with a kitchen or kitchenette!
You can bring food with you or buy food at a market or store.
Prepare your own meals/snacks and save money on food.
Request a refrigerator for your Hotel room if not provided, and say you
have “special diet requirements” to avoid an additional “refrigerator fee”
(kosher, diabetic, vegan, etc., and the fee to avoid is usually $25.00).

Bread + Cheese +tinfoil +hot hotel iron = Grilled Cheese Sandwich!

Hotel Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Ingredients:
2 Slices of Bread (butter optional)
2 Slices of Cheese
Optional: add other ingredients like sandwich meat, onions, etc.
Directions:
Tinfoil – make a cheese sandwich, wrap it in tinfoil
Heat the Hotel iron provided in your room to high heat.
Use the hot hotel iron to “grill” the sandwich.
Do not use uncooked meats! If using butter, use it lightly.
Do not use the ironing board or any flammable surface for “grilling”
CAUTION: Make sure you have ventilation, or are using the bathroom fan,
and avoid burning the sandwich. Do not trigger the SMOKE/FIRE ALARM!
Be sure to unplug and let the iron cool completely before storing it away.
NOTE: The hot iron will toast the bread and melt the cheese,
but will not be hot enough to cook uncooked meats.
Use extreme caution when using an iron in a Hotel/Motel room!

The 86 Rules of the Bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 86 Rules of the Bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1962618_852343718125529_614231841_n

The Bar at the Roof on Wilshire in West Los Angeles, California

First, a very important message for all my Friends:
PLEASE
DRINK RESPONSIBLY!
GET HOME ALIVE, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!
“KNOW WHEN TO SAY WHEN!”
“FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK!”

12802699_1332033296823233_6943918907687785246_n
The Bar at El Torito Mexican Restaurant in Sherman Oaks, California

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE read these rules!!!

NOTE: We ripped these rules from the interweb.
“Learn it. Know it. Live it.”

1. If you owe someone money, always pay them back in a bar.
Preferably during Happy Hour.

2. Always toast before doing a shot.

3. Whoever buys the shots gets the first chance to offer a toast.

4. Change your toast at least once a month.

5. Buying someone a drink is five times better than a handshake.

11850704_1196763267016904_1315773691200648750_o

The Casino Bar at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada

6. Buying a strange woman a drink is still cool. Buying all her drinks is really dumb.

7. Never bum more than one cigarette from the same person in one night.
NOTE: DON’T SMOKE CIGARETTES!

8. When the bartender is slammed, resist the urge to order a slightly-dirty,
very-dry, in-and-out, super-chilled half-and-half martini with a lemon twist.
Limit orders to beer, straight shots and two-part cocktails.

9. Get the bartender’s attention with eye contact and a smile.

10. DO NOT make eye contact with the bartender if you don’t want a drink.

227200841_2848826085380621_1411489795097638486_n

11. Unacceptable things to say after doing a shot:
“Great, now I’m going to get drunk.”
“I hate shots.”
“It’s coming back up.”

12. NEVER, ever tell your bartender they made your drink too strong.

13. If he makes it too weak, order a double next time. He’ll get the message.

14. If you offer to buy a woman a drink and she refuses, she does not like you.

15. If you offer to buy a woman a drink and she accepts, she still might not like you.

17626236_1750421021651123_3972512772980190229_n

The Bar at the Lakeside Cafe in Encino, California

16. If she buys you a drink, she likes you.

17. If someone offers to buy you a drink, do not upgrade your liquor preference.

18. Always have a corkscrew in your house.

19. If you don’t have a corkscrew, push the cork down into the bottle with a pen.

20. Drink one girly drink in public….
and you will forever be known as the guy who drinks girly drinks.

35870746_2302054819821071_8203050805629026304_n

21. Our parents were better drinkers than we are.

22. Never talk to someone in the restroom unless you’re doing the same thing:
urinating, waiting in line or washing your hands.

23. Girls hang out, apply make-up, and have long talks in the bathroom.
Men do not.

24. After your sixth drink, do not look at yourself in the mirror.
It will shake your confidence.

25. It is only permissible to shout ‘woo-hoo!’
if you are doing a shot with four or more people.

130304124242-big-lebowski-story-top

26. If there is a DJ, you can request a song only once per night.
If he doesn’t play it within half an hour, don’t approach him again.
If he does play it, don’t approach him again.

27. Learn how to make a rose out of a bar napkin.
You’ll be surprised how well it works.

28. If you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to drink in a bar.
Go to the liquor store.

29. If you owe someone twenty dollars or less, you may pay them back in beer.

30. Never complain about the quality or brand of a free drink.

1048525_677793648913871_47626874_o

Drink this.

31. If you have been roommates with someone more than six months,
you may drink all their beer, even if it’s hidden, as long as you leave them one.

32. You can have a shot of their hard liquor
only if the cap has been cracked and the bottle goes for less than $25.

33. The only thing that tastes better than free liquor is stolen liquor.

34. If you bring Old Milwaukee to a party, you must drink at least 2 cans
before you start drinking the imported beer in the fridge.

35. Learn to appreciate hangovers.
If it was all good times every jackass would be doing it.

17630157_1746798775346681_535497256891119372_n

Altitude Lounge in San Diego, California – Night

36. If you ever feel depressed, get a bartender’s guide
and then browse thru all the drinks you’ve never tried.

37. Try one new drink each week.

38. If you’re the bar’s only customer,
you are obliged to make small talk with the bartender.
Until he stops acknowledging you. Then you’re off the hook.
The same goes for him.

39. Never tip with coins that have touched you.
If your change is $1.50, you can tell the barmaid to keep the change,
but, once she has handed it to you, you cannot give it back.
To a bartender or cocktail waitress, small change has no value.

40. If you have ever told a bartender, “Hey, it all spends the same”
– You are a cheap ass.

12963795_1361871460506083_5297857950801665437_n

The Bar at Kaleidoscope Pizzeria in Medford, Oregon

41. Anyone on stage or behind a bar is fifty percent better looking.

42. You can tell how hard a drinker someone is
by how close they keep their drink to their mouth.

43. A bar is a college, not a nursery. If you spill a beer, clean it up.
If you break a glass, wait for the staff to clean it up, then blame someone else.

44. Being drunk is feeling sophisticated without being able to say it.

45. It’s okay to drink alone.

George Thorogood LIVE – “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”
with Elvin Bishop at the Capitol Theatre on 7/5/1984

46. After three drinks, you will forget a woman’s name right after she tells you.
The rest of the night you will call her “baby” or “darling”.

47. Nothing screams ‘Gay’ louder than swirling an oversized brandy snifter.

48. Men don’t drink from straws. Unless you’re doing a Mind or Face Eraser.

49. If you do a shot, finish it. If you don’t plan to finish it, don’t accept it.

50. Never brood in a dance bar. Never dance in a dive bar.

11350594_1144724742220757_3554107128058292553_n

The Bar at The Brickroom in Ashland, Oregon

51. Never play more than three songs by the same artist in a row.

52. Your songs will come on as you’re leaving the bar. (EVERYTIME!)

53. Never yell out jukebox selections to someone you don’t know.

54. Never lie in a bar. You may, however, grossly exaggerate and lean.

55. If you think you might be slurring a little, then you are slurring a lot.
If you think you are slurring a lot, then you are not speaking English.

funny_tough_lucky_drunk_leprechaun_sticker

56. Screaming, “SOMEONE BUY ME A DRINK!” has never worked.

57. For every drink, there is a 5% better chance you will get in a fight.
There is also a 3% better chance you will lose that fight.

58. Fighting an extremely drunk person when you are sober is HILARIOUS!

59. If you’re broke and a friend is “sporting you”,
you must laugh at all his jokes
and play wingman when he makes his move.

60. If you’re broke and a friend is “ragging on you”,
you may steal any drink he leaves unattended.

61. Never rest your head on a table or the bar top.
It is the equivalent of voluntarily putting your head on a chopping block.

62. If you are trading rounds with a friend
and he asks if you want another, always say “YES”.
Once you fall out of sync you will end up buying more drinks than him.

63. If you’re going to hit on a member of the bar staff,
make sure you tip well before and after, regardless of her response.

64. The people with the most money are rarely the best tippers.

65. Before you die, single-handedly make one decent martini.

Classic Vodka Martini

228834318_4987623257930867_2767501640300164912_n

1/2 oz dry vermouth

For a shaken martini:
Fill a shaker with ice. Add vodka and vermouth. Shake until chilled.

66. Asking a bartender “what beers are on tap?”
when the tap handles are right in front of you, is just like saying “I’m an idiot.”

67. Never ask a bartender “What’s good tonight?”
They do not fly Scotch in “fresh from the coast” every morning.

68. If there is a line for drinks at the bar,
get your damn drink and step the hell away.

69. If there is ever any confusion, the fuller beer is yours.

70. The patrons at your local bar are your extended family,
your father, your mother, your brothers and sisters.
Except you get to sleep with these sisters. And if you’re really drunk…. mother.

Poolside Tiki Bar in Las Vegas!

71. It’s acceptable, traditional, in fact, to disappear during a night of hard drinking.
You will mysteriously reappear, and your friends will understand. If they even notice.

72. Never argue your tab at the end of the night.
Remember, you’re hammered, and they’re sober.
It’s like a precocious five-year-old arguing the super-string theory with a physicist.
99.9% of the time you’re wrong and, either way, you’re going to come off as a jackass.

73. If you bring booze to a party, you must drink it or leave it.

74. If you hesitate more than three seconds after the bartender looks at you…..
you do not deserve a drink.

75. Beer makes you mellow, champagne makes you silly,
wine makes you dramatic, and tequila makes you felonious.

filepicker-lNYJU0ySCiEn5ktXU881_tequila
“Jose Cuervo, you are no friend of mine.”

76. The greatest thing a drunk can do is buy a round of drinks for a packed bar.

77. NEVER preface a conversation with your bartender
with “I know this is going to be a hassle, but . . .”

78. When you’re in a bar and drunk,
your boss is just another guy begging for a fat lip. Unless he’s buying.

79. If you are 86’d, do not return for at least three months.
To come back sooner makes it appear no other bar wants you.

80. Anyone with three or more drinks in his/her hands has the right of way.

Smuggler’s Cove Tiki Bar in San Francisco, California

81. If you’re going to drink on the job, DRINK VODKA.
It’s the no-tell liquor.

82. There’s nothing wrong with drinking before noon.
Especially if you’re supposed to be at work.

83. The bar clock moves twice as fast from midnight to last call.

84. An engraved flask is one of the best gifts you can ever give.
And make sure there’s something in it.

85. On the intimacy scale,
sharing a quiet drink is between a handshake and a kiss.

86. You will forget everyone of of these rules by your fifth drink.

Monday, July 19, 2021 – It’s the 200th day of the year!

mktplmonpromo

On this day in AD 64, The Great Fire of Rome begins
and it rages on for six days, and destroys half of the city.

On this day in 1943, during World War II,
Rome was bombed by 500 Allied Aircraft.

Today is the 87th Anniversary of The Original Farmer’s Market in Los Angeles.
Located at Fairfax and 3rd in Hollywood/West Hollywood.

1:20am: We finally got hungry enough to make some food at 1:00am.
On The Menu: BBQ steak (rib-eye) & jack cheese w/sautéed onions
on a toasted sesame bagel with a dill pickle
215880535_4951030291590164_2092221714362353656_n

2:15am: So, we’ve been bouncing back and forth between TV and the interweb.
Podcasts, YouTube, “Dune”, documentaries, news, “Two and a Half Men”, etc.
And we binge-watched the first season of “The Mandalorian” on Thursday.

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

8:15am: We woke up around 6:30am. We took the dogs outside.
We fed the dogs. We took the dogs outside. We got the newspapers.
We drank an iced espresso. Drink Coffee. Drink Water.
And now we’re awake and in the Home Office. Fuckin’ Monday morning.
Read our previous Blog Post “A Case of the Mondays?”

9:10am: We took the dogs outside again.
We drank another iced espresso.
We ate a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese.

12:20pm: We took the dogs outside. We scooped the poop. We got the mail.
We put more water in the swimming pool…. but there might be a leak.
That’s a big problem if the pool is leaking! And it’s also really HOT outside.
!HACE MUCHO CALOR!
The housekeeper is here cleaning. The dogs are in the bedroom.
And we have local errands to run that we should have finished an hour ago.
Fuckin’ Monday.

208805362_1576678796010034_8356502406251992041_n

3:40pm: Well, after spending a HOT time outside, we got a case of the “fuckits”.
And we said “FUCK IT” and then we got undressed and took a nap.
No errands today. The housekeeper finished and left. We slept for a little bit.
We woke up and took the dogs outside. Now chillin’ again in the Home Office.
And we’ll do those errands tomorrow. Maybe.

There’s a brush fire burning in Flores Canyon in Topanga near Malibu….
(and at 6:30pm it’s pretty much contained)

There was a pursuit! First he’s going to rob someone with a machete,
then he’s going run from the police, hit a couple spike strips, still try to get away,
and then smoke a cigarette while the LAPD waits to arrest him.
Surrender when you feel like it. Suspect in custody.

6:30pm: We took a nap with the dogs. We woke up. We prepped their supper.
We took the dogs outside. We fed the dogs. We took the dogs outside.
It’s still really HOT out. We drank another iced espresso.

10:30pm: Fleas! And now we have fleas. The little girl just got a flea bath.
She went on vacation and came back with fleas….  we don’t have words.
Can’t deal with biting insects. And can’t deal with the other dogs right now.

217496361_4949536761739517_3742050912911376299_n
More athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 in Japan.
(71 cases among athletes, staff, and support personnel)
The Olympics will go forward despite the CoronaVirus Delta Variant
and rising case numbers in Japan and worldwide.
(1071 New Cases in Tokyo yesterday = case numbers are rising!)

NOTE: The TSA screened 2.2Million passengers yesterday (Sunday).

Tuesday, July 20, 2021 – Happy Birthday Bob!

On this day in 1969, Humans walked on The Moon. (maybe)
Neil Armstrong: “That’s one step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

We ate that crappy meat pie for dinner.
And then we got hungry after midnight for some good food.
So, we banged out some real dinner at 1:00am.

On the Menu: Steak soft taco with salsa verde
219661105_4956138294412697_2869069672080848085_n

We woke up early. The dogs went outside. The dogs got fed.
And the dogs have fleas. We watched the launch on TV this morning.

6:35am: Blue Origin “First Human Flight” (civilian space flight)
Amazon Billionaire Jeff Bezos and 3 other humans went for a ride.
A REALLY EXPENSIVE RIDE. 66 miles high, under 11 minutes.
What was the purpose? Why? And seriously, they didn’t go to space.
They went to an imagined distance that we call “space”. And they didn’t die.
220073538_10215915990207575_1351813359309672544_n
And Sir Richard Branson with “Virgin Galactic” shot his wad last week.

NOTE: When Bezos did land, the crowd around the ‘capsule’ was incredibly white.
White guys wearing cowboy hats and popping bottles of champagne in the dirt,
the only people of color we saw were the media people covering the event.

“Jeff Bezos’ recreational space trip cost $2,540,000 per minute,
and we’re still arguing about whether the billionaires need to be taxed.”
– Robert Reich

WEARAFUCKINGMASK! And wear it all the time.
The “rules” for mask wearing are ridiculous! On here, off there….
Indoors. Outdoors? WHO IS SAFE? Where are you safe?
99.5% of current COVID-19 DEATHS are unvaccinated people.
Too many people are still not fully vaccinated.
The Delta Variant is spreading rapidly. Now over 80% of cases.

Screen Shot 2021-07-23 at 03.28.09

7:30am: We are in a weird space this morning.
8:00am: We just washed the other little girl. She got a nice flea bath.
And we are also doing a load of laundry with all the cage bedding.

8:40am: Watched the Jeff and Mark Bezos interview with Anderson Cooper earlier.
Now watching the exact same interview with Michael Strahan EXACTLY THE SAME!
SAME QUESTIONS. SAME ANSWERS.
Total Circle Jerk.

9:30am: We took the dogs outside. And now they’re all in the Home Office.

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZ.

4:15pm: We took a nap with the dogs. We woke up and took the dogs outside.
We played with them and had them in the Home Office. They’re all good today.
It’s HOT. We wasted another day. How is it after 4:00pm already?
We made/ate some lunch.

On The Menu: Chicken and cheese street tacos on corn tortillas
with salsa verde and guacamole and an iced espresso to drink.
217573146_4956137814412745_2533019810220447312_n

7:50pm: Okay, here’s the Tuesday update.
The dogs went outside. The dogs got fed. The dogs went outside.
We surfed the interweb and fell asleep for a little bit.
JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZ. We woke up around 11:00pm.
We made and ate dinner after midnight….sometime around 1:00am.
On The Menu: Bone-in rib-eye steak with sauteed onions, steamed broccoli,
and shoestring potatoes, with cran-raspberry-orange juice

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

5:30am: We fell asleep for a little bit and woke up around 4:30am.
We started binge-watching “The Mandalorian” season 2.
6:45am: The dogs went outside. The dogs got fed.

7:35am: We made an iced espresso. Drink Coffee. Drink Water.

219290875_10222999720813987_6786578080903487255_n

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZ.

10:20am: We went back to bed. We woke up.
And there’s a pursuit on right now!
Burglary suspect driving a BMW around Upland, California.
He parked and bailed into a backyard under some trees.
Now he’s surrounded and hiding…. We made an iced espresso.
212089828_4958437664182760_4018819267505602672_n
11:20am: Well, everyone cut away from the yard to yard search.
So, we may or may not hear what happened. And that sucks.
When the media cuts away and then it’s over before it’s over.
The helicopters run out of gas, and there’s no backup to cover.
We are left wondering and fully unsatisfied without a conclusion.
So, now, on with our day. UPDATE: Suspect in custody.

Harvey Weinstein is back in Los Angeles to face more charges here.
RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT. Harvey raped and got away with it for years.
He was already convicted in New York and will die in prison,
and his lawyers just pleaded “Not guilty” in Downtown LA…. SCUMBAG.

There’s MASSIVE FLOODING in Germany and in China! Climate change is real.
Wildfires are burning throughout the western United States.
Northern California and Oregon are ON FIRE again.
DROUGHT and BURN CONDITIONS are the worst they’ve ever been.

JoshWillTravel: ZZZZZZZZZZ.

3:15pm: We took a nap. We woke up and took a nap. We ate half a dill pickle.
And the gardener came. (leaf blower) We woke up. We made an iced espresso.

ANOTHER PURSUIT!
Chattering like hens, speculating, talking shit about stuff they don’t know about,
totally irresponsible journalism! JUST REPORT THE FACTS AND DON’T GUESS!

Got off the 110 in Pasadena, the Pasadena PD tried a PIT Maneuver and popped the rear tire.
The guy tried to get away, got back on the freeway, tire gave out, slow speed pursuit, and then the gut hit two freeway signs and then a highway divider. Stopped. Trapped. And he quickly surrendered. Suspect in custody.
Screen Shot 2021-07-21 at 16.04.20

4:30pm: “You are the father.” Maury never gets old…. really?
Switch to the local news. It’s HOT. And it might rain on Monday.

5:20pm: The dogs went outside. The dogs got fed.
We took a nice hot shower. We had a pizza delivered.
We did a load of laundry. We did a little organizing.

92439123_1216567998719680_9141907193128288256_o

On The Menu: BBQ chicken pizza from CPK
and some frozen chocolate custard for dessert later.

8:25am: We are awake. Hello Thursday morning. How is it Thursday?
We got woken up by the trash truck out front and the little dog in the bed.
We took the dog outside. We went into the kitchen. We took the dog outside.
We made and drank a cup of espresso. Drink Coffee. Drink Water.

11:30am: We drank an iced espresso. The housekeeper is here.
The dogs are in the Home Office with us and they are napping now.
It looks like a dog bomb went off up in here. “The Dog Days of Summer”

7:40pm: Recapping Thursday afternoon and evening now.
We meant to do the errands we didn’t do on Monday, then Tuesday….
but we got a case of the “fuckits” and didn’t do anything again today.
We joined the club for a late lunch. Then we fell asleep around 5:30pm.
We just woke up and made an iced espresso.
The dogs went outside. The dogs got fed. The dogs are chillin’.
On The Menu: Club sandwich with sweet potato fries and frilly toothpicks:

THIS IS A MILESTONE. We started this Blog in February of 2013.
Yes, we have a “Seven Year Itch” and sometimes think about not blogging,
but it has been valuable to our experience during four months of Forced Lockdown.
(There are currently 50 Parts to our CoronaVirus! daily diary – read them!)
We thought about all the restaurants we “reviewed” and how they have to change their entire business model or go out of business. We thought about all the travel companies, vendors, and travel consultants we know that don’t have any business right now.
AND FUCK THE AIRLINES, HOTEL COMPANIES, CRUISE LINES AND CASINOS!

“Say what you will about science…”

Logic follows clearly defined rules and tests for critical thinking. Logic also seeks tangible, visible or audible proof of a sound thought process by reasoning.

Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) invented logic. He wrote the first known treatises of logical theory and taught the first logic classes in history. He was a student of Plato who was a student of Socrates.

The 2 types of logical arguments:
deductive and inductive reasoning provide evidence of the truth

logic

Science is the study of the natural world through observation and experiment.

Science is a systematic and logical approach to discovering how things in the universe work. It is the body of knowledge accumulated through discoveries about all the things in the universe.

Science is valued because the application of scientific knowledge helps satisfy many basic human needs and improve quality of life and standards of living.

“Science affects us all, every day of the year,
from the moment we wake up,
all day long, and through the night”

From Scot Nery’s Blog:
We can trick people into really enjoying themselves and paying for fun. We just need to accept that they’re probably not going to pay for the fun directly. Here are some things to consider for the way we package fun entertainment.

  • coolness. people want something that’s cool and coolness can be expensive
  • social status. Like a selfie museum, it’s not always about being cool. It could be about looking valueable as an employee, or seeming like you fit in
  • memorable experience. A vacation is an example.
  • edifying experience. Maybe it’s educational or strengthening?
  • something expensive PLUS. The Palazzo circus show promotes themselves as a gourmet dinner plus entertainment.
  • connection to fame. See someone famous and be tricked into having fun
  • stress relief. If you ask adults why they play video games, they’re more likely to say this reason than simply that it’s fun, because stress relief is important
  • kids fun. if we give a kid something fun to do, it can be joyful to watch and also take away our headache for a little bit.
  • brand engagement. A good tv commercial is fun and it also is worth money to the brand because audiences deem it attention-worthy.

The scientific method is a method of investigation involving experimentation and observation to acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and answer questions.

tumblr_oycsqzBRbh1vy747uo1_500

Scientific method involves making conjectures (hypotheses), deriving predictions from them as logical consequences, and carrying out experiments or empirical observations based on those predictions. A hypothesis is a conjecture, based on knowledge obtained while seeking answers to the question.

The 3 principles of scientific thinking
The scientific method is practiced within a context of scientific thinking, and scientific (and critical) thinking is based on three things:
1. Using empirical evidence (empiricism), data collected through direct observation and/or experimentation. Observations are based on specific events that have already happened and can be verified by others as true or false.
2. Practicing logical reasoning (rationalism),
3. Possessing a skeptical attitude (skepticism) about presumed knowledge

The 9 steps of the scientific method in order
The scientific method and consists of the following eight steps:
1. Objective observation (remain totally value free when studying; try to remain totally unbiased in all investigations and experiments)
2. Ask a testable question,
3. Gather information and background research,
4. State a hypothesis (and make predictions based on it),
5. Design and perform the experiment and test the hypothesis (and predictions),
6. Collect data and make conclusions,
7. Draw conclusions and report,
8. Evaluate (and use the results to draw conclusions and refine the hypothesis, make new hypotheses and/or predictions)
9. Publish findings (optional).

source

When conducting research, scientists use the scientific method to collect measurable, empirical evidence in experiments related to a hypothesis (often in the form of an if/then statement), the results aiming to support or contradict a theory.

Scientific knowledge allows us to develop new technologies, solve practical problems, and make informed decisions

Five skills scientists use in observation to learn about the world:
(we observe objects and events using all of our five senses)
1. communicating,
2. classifying,
3. measuring,
4. inferring,
5. predicting.

It’s poetry in motion
She turned her tender eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
Mm, but she blinded me with science
She blinded me with science
And failed me in biology, yeh yeh
Now uh, huh huh
When I’m dancing close to her
Blinding me with science, science
Science
I can smell the chemicals
Blinding me with science, science
Science
Science
Mm, but it’s poetry in motion
And when she turned her eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
She blinded me with science
She blinded me with science
And failed me in geometry
When she’s dancing next to me
Blinding me with science, science
Science
Mmm mmm, mmm mmm, mmm
I can hear machinery
Blinding me with science, science
Science
Huh, it’s poetry in motion
And now she’s making love to me
The spheres’re in commotion
The elements in harmony
She blinded me with science
She blinded me with science
And hit me with technology
Good heavens Miss Sakamoto, you’re beautiful
I, I don’t believe it
There she goes again
She’s tidied up and I can’t find anything
All my tubes and wires
And careful notes
And antiquated notions
But, it’s poetry in motion
And when she turned her eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
Unh, she’s blinding me with science
She blinded me with science
She blinded me with SCIENCE!

Hash House A Go Go at The LINQ in Las Vegas, Nevada

Just up the escalator from the casino at The LINQ hotel is a “trending” restaurant, the Hash House A Go Go, that we have heard talked about and wanted to check out. Monday afternoon we were hungry and cruising the fabulous Las Vegas Strip and decided to have an early dinner.

Hash House A Go Go has four locations in Las Vegas. They are originally from San Diego and they have single locations in Reno and a couple other states.

Celebrity autographed menus are framed and posted in the landing area/lobby/overflow waiting room at the top of the elevator, with a merchandise display and menu board. There is also a Selfie Machine that will take your pic and post it to social media for free.

“Twisted Farm Food”
They have a very large menu. Most everything is served 24/7.
And they charge La$ Vega$ $trip Ca$ino prices.
Definitely a “tourist trap”, but the food was good.

THE SPECIAL LAMINATED MENU: (with cocktails and souvenirs for sale)

On the Menu: Burger with 2 patties stuffed with cheese, bacon, avocado, side of crispy fries and coffee to drink. We asked for BBQ sauce (and they charged us an additional $1 – TOTAL BULLSHIT charging for condiments!).

Our friends shared the French Toast and a fruit plate, and we took the leftovers back to the resort after dinner and some more fun. And the service was not great.

The food was good and the portions are huge! The coffee was advertised as “bottomless” but the waitress didn’t come back to refill it, so we asked for a cup of coffee “to go” before leaving.

NOTE: Souvenir Hash House A Go Go mug from the LINQ in Las Vegas.
It was only an extra $3 with a cup of coffee (cheap), and it came in a box that didn’t quite fit the mug because of the way it’s slanted. The coffee was served in a regular cup along with the food. But the mug doesn’t say “Las Vegas” on it, so what’s the point?

Bought the mug “sight unseen” from the menu. Was bummed it didn’t say Las Vegas when we unboxed it the next morning. But then what’s $3 dollars more when you’re throwing your money around in Las Vegas? BIG THANKS TO FRANK!

Back from Las Vegas.
A fun trip to “Sin City”
Happy to be Home!

JOSHWILLTRAVEL! And travel to Las Vegas last week is what we did.*

*well, it wasn’t last week…. more like last month. Tempus fugit!

We were invited (very last minute) to our friend Frank’s 65th Birthday Adventure:
(via a series of text messages)
– Come to Vegas if you want we have extra rooms
– We arrive Wed and lots of different rooms. Party on Saturday
– The party at Topgolf should be good even if you dont golf. Has a private pool for us
– Then we got a big cabana by our pool Friday Saturday and Sunday

So, let me think about it….. and Road Trip to Vegas!
Left the beautiful San Fernando Valley at 1:30am on Thursday morning.
Highways to Las Vegas: 101north-134west-210west-10west-15north
We drove a rental truck, a no-frills silver Nissan Frontier, with unlimited miles.
No traffic! Driving 285 miles at night with the truckers on I-15 north.

“World’s Tallest Thermometer” in Baker, California

Stopped along the way in Baker, California, for gas and to see the “World’s Tallest Thermometer” once again lighting the side of the 15 freeway. It was “non-operational” for many years, but has been repaired and now it is again a beacon at night on the desert highway.
NOTE: Gas prices were “too f*ckin’ high” in Baker!

Arrived at South Point Hotel and Casino before 6am on Thursday.

We have always heard good things about the SouthPoint. People regularly recommend their buffet as being very good. They were also recently featured in the Showtime series “Action” about legal sports gambling, so as we rolled into town we decided to stop there.

Self Parking at SouthPoint is FREE. We parked outside, instead of in the structure, and it was only a short walk to the Casino entrance. We had to go to the High Limit Slots counter to get a Player’s Card because the Club Desk doesn’t open until 7am. We played some blackjack and a little video poker and won a little money.

We also earned 300 club points which entitled us to “spin the wheel” and we won 5000 points (so we cashed them out for $15.00), wandered around the casino, and then headed for their Breakfast Buffet.

NOTE: Get the SouthPoint Player’s Card and the Breakfast Buffet is only $9.95 + tax
(Really nice breakfast buffet for ~$11.00 + $5.00 tip for our server/waitperson)

Wyndham Grand Desert Resort

Parked near Tower 3, walked to registration at Tower 2 and Checked In.
Our friends had the rooms reserved and a quick phone call was made, our ID was checked, and we were handed a keycard and welcome instructions. We walked back to Tower 3 and met one of our friends in the lobby. She gave us the “nickel tour” of the resort property and showed us the adult pool and the cabana they had reserved for our party weekend. We walked back to Tower 3 and grabbed our luggage and weekend supplies out of the truck and rode the elevator upstairs.

The SMELL in the hall.
Okay, something died. rotting trash beyond rotting. it was terrible. really terrible.
FOR THE WHOLE TIME! It was disgusting. It reeked. It stank.
Yes, we complained. And they tried to mitigate the smell with deodorizers and sprays, but they should have called for sanitary cleanup immediately. They were really good about apologizing and they gave our hosts credit for the inconvenience.

The Sweet Suite!
Tower 3, Room 392 at the Wyndham Grand Desert Resort:

Happily, the smell was only in the hallway. Once inside the room, a “lock-out” connecting room, adjacent to the first room our hosts stayed in…. they moved to the Presidential Suite, and her brother moved into their room. More on that later.

Each room had a nice kitchen area, living room space and private bedroom and bath. Mine was a little smaller than the room next door which also had a bar and bar seating in the living room space. I was very happy with the accommodations and also the fact that it was FREE! My hosts were treated to drinks, gifts and other forms of thanks all week long in appreciation for the invitation.

After the little tour of the resort the it was nappy time. Then once we were awake and active again, we joined our friends for a quick visit to the TopGolf mega-entertainment center across the street. We met our friends in the inside bar and had a cocktail while they finished their food (we were still full from the morning buffet).

Our friend’s birthday party was scheduled for Saturday afternoon in the Chairman’s Suite, complete with private pool and lunch buffet, so they went to check it out.  More on that party later……
We wandered around and toured the massive four deck facility. There were lots of bar and seating areas, and a public pool area with lounges, private cabanas and a “swim-up” bar. There were televisions and monitors everywhere, and really big multi-screens by the pool and in the gathering and game areas. And there were a ton of people having fun at midday on Thursday! The Golf Area has private driving areas for rent, with computer monitoring, that tracks your ball and gives you distance, replay, and other fun golf info. And of course there is plenty of food and beverage service available everywhere.
Just mind the warning signs and watch for errant golf balls and clubs!

And then back across the street to the resort.
Our friends moved their stuff to the Presidential Suite with a Private Veranda and we hung out there and waited for them to get settled in.

FRIDAY at the Wyndham

Good morning! Cabana Time!
Our Large Private Party Cabana in the shade for Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Large Private Party Cabana in the shade for Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Friday, Saturday and Sunday began the same way each day: Tiki drinks for brunch! And some kind of food from the resort kitchen, along with snacks we brought from the room.

AND THEN CLICK AGAIN TO VIEW THE PIC AT FULL SIZE!

The cabana was equipped with a nice television and a noisy ceiling fan, and the public smoking area was right next door and there was a public cabana in that area. Most of the pool cabanas were positioned in the sun, and must have been really hot inside, while our cabana was on the other side and in the shade set back but facing the adult pool area.

Dinner time on Friday, and we had a meeting in the Presidential Suite to decide where to go to eat. There are many choices, so the group reviewed them, and eventually decided to go to Burger Bar (inside the Luxor Hotel, which we didn’t know at the time).

NOTE: Everything we did took a long time to get it together and actually do it. It wasn’t a problem, and we resolved to just ride along and see what happens (most of the time).

And then it started raining. A real Desert Storm! And a wet Friday night.
One of our new friends was the non-drinking designated driver, and he was a cool dude. But his driving was not cool. And it was dark and wet and it took a long time to get there. And then we toured the parking lot, for a long time, before finally parking.

We made our way into the Luxor and found the Burger Bar. Basically a $20 hamburger without anything else, so we decided to go spend our money at The Peppermill instead.

A good time was had by all! We enjoyed our dinner and drinks at The Peppermill. Frank had a big Scorpion drink (in a glass, not a bowl) and the rest of us had a few different drinks from their cocktail menu too.

One more drive around Vegas in the rain and back to the resort. We survived! We returned to the Presidential Suite and then back to our suite in the other tower. We decided to take a hot bath and then sleep in the next day.

On The Menu: Tacos (chicken, steak and pork), Sliders (cheeseburgers, battered fish and pulled pork), chips with salsa and guacamole, salads, and of course more tiki cocktails!

The party was a lot of fun, we got out drink on, and there was too much food! We ended up taking a lot of it back to the resort afterwards. There was golfing (unlimited balls, or something like that) and swimming too. The pictures are just a sample before it got crazy wild.

A beautiful day at TopGolf Las Vegas!

Saturday Night in Vegas!

And so we returned to the resort and hung out until it got dark. We decided our next destination would be (more) Tropical Cocktails at Frankie’s Tiki Room!

Saturday Night on the Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada

After the wild road trip on Friday night, we decided we would drive to Frankie’s and meet the crew there. We cruised past The Strip and downtown to the bar.

More cocktails! Famous tiki drinks! And it was really dark inside.
Here are some pics:

We enjoyed a Mai Tai and then there was a lot of conversation and more drinks. We moved around from our table in the cabana to a seat at the bar. Lots of kitsch and weird decor to see, even in the dark. Eventually, they decided to return to the resort and we decided to go back to The Strip and have some Las Vegas fun.

We drove to The Wynn, Las Vegas Hotel and Casino – FREE SELF PARKING!

The Wynn is a beautiful property! And it was crowded, which was nice. We played a little and wandered around taking in the different areas of the casino and environs. We had some luck and cashed out and drove back to the resort and went to bed.

SUNDAY (Mother’s Day) morning after waking up and getting ready, we walked over to the Presidential Suite for Breakfast/Brunch and more Cabana Time! It was a leisurely day of drinking and hanging out. There may have been an afternoon nap involved.

So we were volunteered to cook and we grilled some steaks for dinner at 9:30pm on Sunday at the community BBQ Grills. There’s a curfew for cooking at 10pm, so we had to be quick! We took them upstairs and enjoyed a great meal on the private veranda (and of course, there were more cocktails).

Then we went on a mission to The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” Sign!
It was designed by Nevada-born graphic designer Betty Willis (1923-2015) in 1959.
60428662_2841116725914875_2867779852864323584_n

“The rounded diamond shape of the sign was inspired by the Goodyear logo and the idea for the starburst came from the one in Disneyland’s emblem, which to her meant a happy destination. The seven silver dollars were a symbol of good luck for visitors entering the world’s gambling capital. (Betty) Willis’s design was never trademarked.”

The sign was built by a small local company Western Electric Displays Inc, aka Western Neon. Western Neon was bought by YESCO (Young Electric Sign Company) and they have maintained the sign ever since. The original sign has been rebuilt, restored, and recognized as a cultural and historic landmark for the City of Las Vegas over the years.

Safe and legal public access to the sign was finally made possible in 2008, when parking spaces and a pedestrian walkway were finally constructed. Clark County and the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office had the sign listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

NOTE: It was “Helldorado Days” a big holiday in the State of Nevada. There was a parade on Saturday and the Rodeo and other events were happening all weekend in downtown Las Vegas and on Fremont Street. So, we didn’t go there.

Old Vegas! Glitter Gulch!

We returned to the resort and stayed up until MONDAY morning!
“It’s HOT in the Hot Tub!”
And sometime before dawn we hit the Jacuzzi and Pool! (the pool and jacuzzi at Tower 3 are open 24 hours) It was very Early AM, at Tower 3, after it was cleaned, before the crowd and we were almost alone.

We had stayed up all night and after our adventures we finally decided to try out the 24 hour pool and jacuzzi in our Tower. The pool area was empty except for one couple, so we waited until they were out of the water and then we moved in. We spent about a half hour enjoying the warm, bubbly spa, and swam in the cool pool until the calm was interrupted by two small children and their mother….. as we left the pool area at 6am the mother was screaming at the children in the shallow end of the pool, “Get over here dammit, you pulled this sh*t all yesterday, I’m not gonna have it today!”

Went up to the room and took a hot shower, ate some leftover tacos, and went to bed.
Requested and was given a late checkout time of 12 noon via the telephone.

And then,
Housekeeping knocked on my door three different times between 9:30 and 11am!
AND THERE WAS A “DO NOT DISTURB” SIGN HANGING ON THE DOOR HANDLE!
They also started cleaning the other half of the “lockout suite” and made noise like they were doing construction next door, making it impossible to sleep.

NOTE: We complained and Dan, the resort manager, gave us a $50 credit to use at our choice of restaurants “off-property” at a Caesars Hotel (there was a list of restaurants to choose from at each hotel) for our inconvenience and also took care of our friends who invited us. That’s real good hospitality!

Checked out of the Wyndham and drove back over to the Wynn. FREE Self Parking again.

We walked to the Palazzo and Venetian, then went outside, crossed Las Vegas Blvd and went over to the Mirage. It was a beautiful day, but it was too hot of course.

We visited the MLife desk, and asked about a MyVegas room rate. They offered us a Monday night room for $63.00 + taxes and the ridiculous resort fee, so we passed.

We walked through the Forum Shops to Caesars Palace and enjoyed the weirdness!

Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino was once the best place to stay and play in Las Vegas. Then they turned it into “Disneyland”, and they threw away all the class and quality that made it great. And then they added RESORT FEES and PAID PARKING.

We went to Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill and got a seat a the bar, but when we looked at the menu there was nothing that we wanted to order…. so we thanked them and left. We wandered around Caesars enjoying the sights while trying to decide where to eat.

Then we decided on dinner at Rao’s Italian Kitchen, Las Vegas at Caesars Palace!

On The Menu: Good bread, an excellent Caesar salad and their tasty meat lasagna.
We ate the salad and half of the lasagna and bread, and had the other half packed “to go”.
No drinks or wine because we were driving later, so only ice water with dinner.

It was getting dark after dinner, so we started walking back, watched the sunset behind Caesars Palace across the street, and then stopped at Harrah’s and the old Casino Royale on The Strip.

And then we walked back to the Wynn. We enjoyed our after dinner walk at night and took in the sights along The Strip on our way back. We returned to our car and hit the road. Destination: Los Angeles.

Stopped at the new Mega-Gas Station Terrible’s Road House on the way back to California and filled up the gas tank and emptied mine. They have 100 pumps for “rush hour”, but the place was almost empty when we stopped in around 10pm on Monday night.

It was a quick stop, with lots of light and easy highway access. After getting gas, we took some pics and then got back in the rental truck and made a non-stop, no traffic, night drive back to Los Angeles. Home again before 2am. Had a really fun trip!

The Battle of Puebla during the Second French intervention in Mexico (the French-Mexican War 1861-1867), took place on May 5th, 1862, near Puebla City, Mexico. The outnumbered Mexican Army of Benito Juárez defeated the invading French forces of Napoleon III. France controlled Mexico until 1867, until Mexican troops overthrew the government. The Mexican victory at Puebla is celebrated every year on the fifth of May.
