Saturday Farmer’s Market in Ashland, Oregon

91FsOJ2naPL._SX425_

Passover is the week-long festival that celebrates the emancipation of the Jews from slavery in ancient Egypt. The story of the Exodus is described in the Bible (the Old Testament) in the Book of Exodus. Moses leads the Hebrews out of Egypt, across the Red Sea to Mount Sinai, where he is given the Ten Commandments and they spend 40 years in the desert before reaching the promised land of Canaan.

Dinner at The Stand in Encino, California

Dinner at The Stand in Encino, California

Thursday evening and it was decided that we would have dinner at The Stand on Ventura Boulevard (just west of Balboa) in Encino, in the beautiful San Fernando Valley, in city and county of Los Angeles, in the golden state of California.

13434752_1416579958368566_4525743957245295261_n

Dinner at The Stand in Encino, California

There’s a big lot with FREE parking, metered (8am-8pm Mon-Sat) street parking on Ventura Blvd and FREE street parking on the side streets.

Enter through the gates and the outdoor patio and then enter the restaurant through the covered patio. You’ll be greeted by the large Menu Board on the wall and (usually) a line of people waiting to order at the registers.

TIP: Know your order! Decide before arriving at the register and know what you want.

Dinner at The Stand in Encino, California

Everything is cooked and made to order. Once you place your order and pay, they will give you a number for your table and then you’ll have to decide whether to sit inside or outside.

It was a beautiful evening outside, but because it wasn’t crowded we chose to sit inside. They have nice outdoor seating, covered and uncovered, but you’re still Ventura Blvd adjacent and it can be noisy and/or crowded at lunch and during “rush hour” dinner time.

Burgers, Hotdogs, Sandwiches and Salads are the choices at The Stand. With lots of options, extras and side orders available. Burgers start at $7.50, hotdogs are ~$4, sandwiches and salads, desserts (good cobbler & ice cream) and drinks. They serve fountain beverages, bottled sodas and water, coffee, tea, Beer, Wine, milkshakes and floats!

On The Menu: Cheeseburger, onion rings, sweet potato fries and a chocolate milkshake with whipped cream. Our party also ordered a Polish Dog and a Grilled Chicken Salad.

Cheeseburger, onion rings, sweet potato fries & a chocolate milkshake w/whipped cream

We chose a table inside the small dining room and waited for the food to be delivered. After a brief waiting period and some nice conversation, our dinner arrived and we ate our food.

We read another review while we were composing this Blog that called it a “BlandBurger” and that about describes it. Too much bun. Not enough seasoning on the meat patty, and it just wasn’t cooked right. We used Bbq sauce and mustard and it was still pretty tasteless. The onion rings and sweet potato fries were great and the chocolate milkshake was perfect, but  we wouldn’t order the cheeseburger again and it was a real disappointment. The Polish dog and the grilled chicken salad both looked good and got good reviews.

We tried a taste of the vanilla fudge and a taste of the chocolate fudge. We were also given a “on sale Easter egg” robin’s egg maltball to try and then a pretzel stick dipped in caramel dipped in milk chocolate was offered when we mentioned we were a travel writer.

Everything we tasted was delicious! And everyone should try the chocolate caramel pretzel stick (we let it get a little soft, but not melty, by leaving it on the car seat at the beach).

Dinner at Uncle Bernie’s Delicatessen in Encino

I’m a nice Jewish boy from the San Fernando Valley and it’s Wednesday night, so let’s have a “nosh” at Uncle Bernie’s Delicatessen in Encino!

Dinner at Uncle Bernie’s Delicatessen in Encino – Deli  “To Go”

It used to be Fromin’s Deli (for years) and when they sold, they just changed the name and ownership. The menu is almost the same, the food is almost the same, some of the employees are the same, and the restaurant’s decor is exactly the same.

Uncle Bernie’s Delicatessen – Dining Room

When I was a young boy, we moved to Encino in the early 70’s, back before the valley and Ventura Blvd were fully developed.  It was a time of vacant lots. nurseries, a miniature golf course, The Oak Room, Monty’s Steak House, Jergen’s Market, Sam’s Liquor, Martex Pet Store, the Pony Express, and Lerner’s Gas station on the corner. Before there was a Plaza de Oro or a Town & Country shopping plaza, before the SavOn became Osco became CVS, before the SavOn Center was built….

There was Fromin’s Delicatessen (in the space now occupied by Versailles Cuban Restaurant) and we had a credit account. On Sunday morning I would walk down and pick up the order we called in: bagels, lox and cream cheese for brunch. I learned the difference between a phosphate and an egg cream at Fromin’s, enjoyed many corned beef sandwiches, and discovered the joy of “New York” Jewish Delicatessen food. It was a staple of our home menu when I was growing up. Delicious chicken & matzoh ball soup, fried matzoh brie, potato & egg noodle kugel, pastrami & beef tongue, chopped liver, brisket, knish, knadle, kasha, knockwurst, smoked herring & salmon, bialys, dill pickles, rice pudding, black & white cookies and halvah bars were always enjoyed.

From the Frominsdeli.com website (with a little editing):

In the early 60’s, Arnie Fromin opened up a small deli in Encino. His son, Dennis, worked alongside him for many years until getting the entrepreneurial bug to run his own restaurant. In 1974, he opened Sports Deli in Century City which quickly became a favorite of locals and celebrities alike. A few years later, Dennis opened Fromin’s Restaurant in Santa Monica, followed shortly by the new Fromin’s Restaurant in Encino.

While growing up, in order to visit his Dad who worked seven days a week at the family deli, he would “allow” Dennis to put on an apron and wash pots and pans and peel potatoes. That was Dennis’ start in the business. By age thirteen, Dennis was working behind the deli counter after school and on weekends, getting a real-world education that would serve him well the rest of his life. All three of Dennis children worked in the Encino location.

During the 80’s, Dennis opened up two additional delicatessens in Rancho Mirage and Simi Valley. But the stress of running five restaurants took its toll on Dennis’ health and he decided to sell off all of the locations except the Santa Monica and Encino restaurants. In 1990, his longtime friend, Maurice Solomon, joined him as a partner and took over the Santa Monica location. By 2003, they decided to sell the Encino location (now operating under the Uncle Bernie’s name with no connection to Fromin’s) and concentrate on the Santa Monica restaurant, which has been a landmark on Wilshire Boulevard for over thirty years.

When Fromin’s moved to the new location, we remained loyal customers.

Fromin’s Delicatessen at Ventura Blvd & White Oak Ave (from Loopnet.com)

There once was a Bagel Nosh and a Nathan’s Hot Dogs in the Plaza de Oro, the Oak Tree Deli opened and closed in the SavOn center, and Jerry’s Deli opened down Ventura Blvd at Petit Av when Dupar’s closed (and I think it was called something else between Dupar’s & Jerry’s). Label’s Table had a location in Tarzana (it moved to Topanga and Mulholland) and Mort’s Deli is still there next to Bea’s Bakery. Brent’s Deli is still in Northridge, but Solley’s on Van Nuys is now closed after all the years it was a valley hot spot for “NY deli”.

And finally they sold Fromin’s (after Arnie died it wasn’t quite the same) and changed the name. I’m glad not much has changed though, it always takes me back to my childhood.

Dinner at Uncle Bernie’s Delicatessen in Encino

There’s an extensive menu with lots of different food choices:

On the Menu: Hot Turkey open face sandwich with gravy, fries, cranberry sauce and a Dr Brown’s cream soda. My dining companion had a bowl of borscht and half a tuna salad sandwich on pumpernickel bread with cole slaw. And then we got a giant chocolate covered custard filled eclair and a big chocolate chip cookie for dessert.

A Big Bowl of Borscht with Sour Cream (Sorry, I don’t like borscht)

NOTE: I asked for dill pickles and extra gravy, but our server forgot to bring both!

Giant Chocolate Covered Custard Filled Eclair

So dinner was good, the service was okay, the food was what it was supposed to be, and we took the eclair and a big chocolate chip cookie “to go”. The prices are better than Jerry’s, so dinner for two with tip was around $40 plus $10 for dessert. – “Such a deal!”

NOTE: They also have complete dinner specials, “early-bird” specials and a “senior citizen’s” menu. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch and holiday dinners.

Ingredients:
Cooking Spray
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 squares unsweetened baker’s chocolate (shaved, not chipped)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
2 sticks butter (softened)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1-1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 cup (semi-sweet) chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat baking sheet with cooking spray.

Mix flour, baker’s chocolate, baking soda and salt in medium bowl and set aside.

Mix (cream) the butter and both sugars until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla, mix well.

Add the dry mixture to the butter mixture and mix well. Add the chocolate chips.
(substitute or add other flavored chips, nuts, M&Ms or other candy pieces if desired)

Roll the dough into 1-1/2 inch balls and place on cookie sheets. Press the dough down to about an inch thick with space between.

Happy Thanksgiving 2015!

Happy Thanksgiving 2015!

Thirty guests for the holiday feast this year! We host our large annual gathering of family, friends and friends of friends. Visitors to our home included folks from faraway places: Finland, France, Scotland, the Czech Republic and West Hollywood.

You can compare this year to last year’s pics (in the previous Blog post), it was another very good year for food. I am truly thankful for this bountiful feast and the family and friends I shared it with. I am truly thankful for many things, including you reading this blog!

Thanksgiving dinner,
Our annual food orgy,
A friendly feast!

Preparations begin early in the week and continue all the way until the meal is served. The party was called for 4:00pm pst on Thursday and we always allow time for our guests to arrive before the dining commences.

The turkeys are thawed and prepared the night before. This year we had two 18 pound organic turkeys, seasoned with a herb & butter rub under the skin. One bird cooks at our house and the other at my sister’s kitchen. She also makes the garlic mashed potato, chocolate bread pudding and fudge. This year her vegetarian friend was visiting so they made the summer squash as well.

And there was some wine and other beverages:

Thanksgiving 2015 – Wine and Finnish chocolate brought by our guests from Finland

Thanksgiving 2015 Dessert Menu:
Pumpkin, pecan and apricot pies (we also had an apple but didn’t bake it); chocolate chip cookies, 2 kinds of fudge, blondies, chocolate bread pudding & fresh whipped cream, Czech cake with marzipan, a chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream (someone brought a flourless chocolate cake but we didn’t even put it out) and Grandma’s Cherry Cheesecake!

Thanksgiving 2015 – the Dessert Table is waiting!

I did a little baking the night before as I mentioned in the previous Blog post:

And this year, by request, I baked my Grandma’s Cherry Cheesecake:

Thanksgiving 2015 – Grandma’s Cherry Cheesecake!

It was a great meal! And complete dessert overkill as usual. I had a full plate of tasty food for dinner and then only had a small piece of cheesecake and a couple pieces of fudge for dessert. And a good time and meal was had by all.

We have the whole process down and this year we used plastic (for dinner) and paper (for dessert) plates, so there was less to clean up and we saved some water in exchange for creating some additional trash.

I finished eating, helped with the clearing and clean up, watched the end of the Bears-Packers game and fell asleep. When I woke up, most of the final cleaning was done, the guests were gone and the tables and chairs were put away. So, BIG THANKS go out to my Step-Brother for helping out while I was napping!

It was an okay day for football. Detroit beat Philadelphia and Carolina beat Dallas, but Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers couldn’t finish and lost to Chicago, so I went 2 out of 3 on my picks. Bad news for Cowboy fans because Quarterback Tony Romo was seriously injured in the game and is out for the rest of the season. Sorry Bob.

Okay, we have “to go” boxes for our guests to take home leftovers from the feast if they are so inclined. I had cranberries with my brunch leftovers, but there wasn’t enough left for dinner the next day… we also sent most of the desserts home with our guests too.

Day After Leftovers for Brunch: turkey, stuffing, garlic mashed potato, cranberry sauce, gravy and cornbread muffins. (repeated for dinner without the cranberry)
