Edison Steam Plant #3 in 1903 designed by John Parkinson

Do you like old buildings?

Built in 1903, originally it was the Edison Steam Plant #3 designed by John Parkinson

Then it was the Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery and company headquarters
Pabst Brewing Company, founded in 1844, was formerly known as Phillip Best Brewing Company and changed its name to Pabst Brewing Company in March 1889.

Since 1982, it has been the Brewery Artist Lofts & Studios in Downtown Los Angeles

NOTE: the Paradox Iron facade and signage is not original, it was a facade for the 1994 Bruce Willis film “Color of Night” and the interior was seen as the ACME Warehouse in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” The Brewery has also been used as a filming location for many other film, television and video projects over the years.

Free Lunch Friday at the new Karl Strauss Brewing Co. in DTLA!

FREE LUNCH at the new Karl Strauss Brewing Co. in Downtown Los Angeles! (DTLA)

We were invited via email to a FREE meal on Friday!

One of the best perks of writing this Blog is that occasionally we are invited to experience cool events for free! “Training Day” at the new Karl Strauss Brewing Co. which just opened at 600 Wilshire in DTLA was a good one. Normally we wouldn’t make the trip and deal with traffic and parking downtown for just a free lunch, but we already had an appointment at the LA Auto Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday at 2pm! Bazinga!

Free Lunch at the Karl Strauss Brewing Co. in DTLA

We had a reservation for noon and traffic was good up until Hollywood Blvd, then it was stop and go into downtown at 11am as usual… we called from the car and let them know we might be late. We found street parking at a meter, walked a couple of blocks, arrived at ten minutes past noon and we were immediately seated by the hosts.

As you can see from the pics, it was busy and a lot of folks were enjoying a free lunch. They had also invited people who work in the neighborhood to sample the menu gratis. The service was excellent! There were a lot of very friendly people working hard and they were obviously going full speed for “Training Day”. So, I’ll take my hat off to Management for having a well trained and motivated staff, and have no complaints and only compliments about the service.

NOTE: Traffic and Parking Sucks Downtown! We got lucky and after driving around downtown for awhile we found a meter a couple blocks from the restaurant. At $0.25 for every 5 minutes we paid for an hour and a half with quarters (the meters also take credit and debit cards for payment) and walked over for lunch. Use caution and always be aware when walking around Downtown Los Angeles, even during the day, because there have been numerous violent incidents involving the homeless, drug addicts and mentally ill individuals!

Road Trip pt. 2 – Daytrip to Santa Cruz, UCSC, McHenry Library & Lunch at the Seabright Brewery

Friday: Daytrip to Santa Cruz!

I was hoping to get an early start and then spend the day in Santa Cruz, but we were delayed and didn’t get going until almost noon. Ann drove us over Highway 17, through the Santa Cruz mountains and up to the University of California, Santa Cruz campus and McHenry Library. Our destination, the Grateful Dead Special Collection.

UC Santa Cruz’s McHenry Library is the home of the Grateful Dead Special Collection. The current exhibit is the “Words of the Grateful Dead”. You’re not supposed to take pictures, but here’s one of the exhibit hall showcasing many literary works. The archive is available online.

The Grateful Dead Archive Online (GDAO) is a socially constructed collection comprised of over 45,000 digitized items drawn from the UCSC Library’s extensive Grateful Dead Archive (GDA) and from digital content submitted by the community and global network of Grateful Dead fans. The Grateful Dead Archive Onlinewww.gdao.org

We toured the rest of the library, wandered around for awhile, and then drove around the campus.

We were hungry and drove through Santa Cruz to the Seabright Brewery in Capitola by the Sea. When we got there, the national league playoff game was on the TV. So, we enjoyed our lunch with a room full of happy San Francisco Giants fans.

The Avatars! “A Comfortable Skin” by Kristine Schomaker

I first fell in love with Kristine Schomaker’s Avatars at the Brewery Art Walk in downtown Los Angeles last year. While touring the open studios at the bi-annual event, I chanced upon the beautiful artwork and the multimedia presentation you see in this blog.

NOTE: My pictures don’t even do them justice! They really have to be seen up close!

The multimedia presentation, includes the Avatars, matching paintings (acrylic on canvas), an animated video projection with soundtrack, and her website and blog. The original genesis of the work comes from her experiences in the “Second Life” online virtual world.

And so last summer, when Kristine was showing three of the Avatars at the Art Party in Beverly Hills, I had to see them again in a proper “gallery setting”.

The Avatars have been since been displayed at UCLA, at the W Hotel in Hollywood,  Downtown, and most recently at Thursday night’s DTLA ArtWalk.

One has been sold to a lucky collector.

The next evolution is a photo series of the Avatars around town. City Hall, Hollywood, Barnsdell Park, the Beach, Griffith Park and more places. Do you have suggestions where she should take them?
