12:00Noon: High speed pursuit in Los Angeles! CRAZY NUTS!
Two hours of wild driving! 95 mph on surface streets!
2 suspects in custody. Great chase! That had everything: speed, accidents, wrong way on the freeway, disabled slow speed chase, and a foot bail with cops swarming them.
Now it’s time for lunch.

On The Menu: 2 hotdogs with mustard and cheese, dill pickle, avocado, celery, carrots, raspberries, red grapes, and an iced espresso to drink,

  • Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella reopens May 22 with mandatory face coverings
  • Tortoise Rock Casino in Twentynine Palms will also re-open on May 22

Good Morning! It’s Saturday! It’s Memorial Day Weekend!
STAYTHEFUCKHOME! Don’t go anywhere. Don’t BBQ with friends!
Don’t Travel! Don’t visit the Beach! Just STAYTHEFUCKHOME!

We fell asleep around midnight, woke up around 3:00am
And we binge watched the rest of the first season of “Lilyhammer” on Netflix,
and then didn’t go back to bed until about 9:00am.
And then we didn’t sleep well, and the dogs were barking,
and the gardener did come today to do more work in the front.

12:45pm: It’s a beautiful day today. Happy Saturday.
We ate 2 hotdogs and a dill pickle for lunch and drank an iced espresso.

Pier 45 in San Francisco burned today.

Happy Sunday! He’ll be here all week.

2:30am: We fell asleep from exhaustion and woke up at 12:30am. We didn’t eat dinner. We were only up briefly, and then went back to sleep.
4:00am: We are awake again. We woke up, we were up for a bit and then we went back to bed.
8:30am: And we are awake again. The dogs barking woke us up, and the dogs barking again kept us up. And now the dogs are barking again….. and now we have a headache.

And it’s going to be HOT (and beautiful) today
and even hotter all this week here in the SFV:

Sunday! Sunday! The Last Zoom Supper!

NOTE: We were all over the place emotionally this weekend, and this Blog Post probably reflects that condition. We don’t go back and edit, re-edit, after we post usually, so please enjoy my misery and anger mixed with weekend entertainment….

Human impact on the environment, due to overpopulation, overconsumption, pollution, and proliferation of technology, has pushed the planet into a new geological epoch known as the Anthropocene. There are just too many people for the environment to sustain! The depletion of non-renewable natural resources is a major problem.

Culling the herd: (cull means to select or gather)
1. Literally, to separate or remove (and usually kill) inferior animals out of a herd so as to reduce numbers or remove undesirable traits from the group as a whole.
(When population densities get too high, they can become diseased)
“Removing some animals from a population creates more space and food for those that are left, and can disrupt social controls on breeding. Survival, reproduction and immigration all increase as a result, and the population quickly rebounds.”

43000+ Reported Cases and 2040+ Reported Deaths in Los Angeles County

97000+ REPORTED DEATHS of UNITED STATES CITIZENS as of Sunday, May 24, 2020
343000+ REPORTED DEATHS WORLDWIDE (and the actual number is higher)

Monday, May 25, 2020 – MEMORIAL DAY!

100898167_2911212375652462_4103308297426173952_n

Good morning. Well, not really. The Little Boy had a problem this morning sometime between 3:00am and 7:00am, and we woke up and had to take care of him. He may need to go to the vet, but because of the holiday, it would be the Emergency Animal Clinic today…. so we are watching him, he is active and happy, he had a bath, and ate chicken and rice for breakfast, and he wants to play, and we want him to rest. We don’t take chances, and if he gets any worse we’ll take him to the Doctor.

US_Flag_Backlit

USA! USA! USA!

The United States flag is in mourning until noon on Memorial Day (4 U.S. Code §7m). When in mourning it should be half-staffed or, in the case of angled flagpoles or other cases where half-staffing is not practical, adorned with a mourning drape, as below, where the tail ends are as long as the flag. All other flags should be half-staffed (or not flown) until noon.

STAYTHEFUCKHOME!

Baking Banana Bread! So, a little time in the kitchen, we had bananas on the brink, so we whipped up a loaf, baked in hour and it’s really good.

And Cornbread too! We meant to make it last week to go with the chili, but the milk was bad and we didn’t want to go to the market. So since we were baking, we decided to try a thin cornbread, rather than muffins or the cake-style we usually make. And it turned out okay, needs a little work, but it will be good with the last of the chili or a little butter and jam later this week.

4:30pm: Good afternoon. Well we fell asleep and got woken up by our cell phone.
Call it an incomplete nap. We checked on the dogs and everything seems to be cool.
It’s HOT outside. They weren’t kidding when they said there was going to be a heat wave.

7:00pm: And the dogs are fed. And we were outside. And we took care of fixing most of the morning stuff. And the Little Boy is doing fine. We are still checking him out for any problems, but he has been fine all day and we are changing his food until he’s better.

Let’s say you woke up with a terrible cough, a fever, and severe body aches. Immediately, you rush to the doctor and unfortunately, you’re diagnosed with COVID-19. For the last two weeks, you’ve been unaware that you were infected and you’ve ignored “the rules.” You’ve gotten together with some close friends for pizza, had a few people over, even visited a park and a beach. You figured, “I don’t feel sick. I have the right to keep living my normal life. No one can tell me what to do.”
With your diagnosis, you spend the next few days at home on the couch, feeling pretty crappy; but then you’re well again because you’re young, healthy and strong. Lucky you. But your best friend caught it from you during a visit to your house, and because she didn’t know she was contagious, she visited her 82-year-old grandfather, who uses oxygen tanks daily to help him breathe because he has COPD and heart failure. Now, he’s dead.
Your co-worker, who has asthma, caught it too, during your little pizza get-together. Now, he’s in the ICU, and he’s spread it to a few others in his family, too–but they won’t know that for another couple of weeks yet.
The cashier at the restaurant where you picked up the pizza carried the infection home to his wife, who has MS, which makes her immunosuppressed. She’s not as lucky as you, so she’s admitted to the hospital because she’s having trouble breathing. She may need to be placed in a medically-induced coma and intubated; she may not get to say goodbye to her loved ones. She may die surrounded by machines, with no family at her bedside.
All because you couldn’t stand the inconvenience of a mask; of staying home; of changing your familiar routines for just a little while. Because you have the right, above all others rights, to continue living your normal life and no one, I mean no one, has the right to tell you what to do.

#WearAMask = It’s not about YOU!
#StayHome = It’s not about YOU!
#GetTested = It’s not about YOU!

White Chocolate Bread Pudding
Bread pudding is considered the “apple pie” of South Louisiana. Because of heavy French influence, crusty French bread is available. Just milk and eggs, combined with leftover bread and the addition of white chocolate sweetens up this Southern dessert.

Ingredients:

  • 9 ounces Bakers white chocolate
  • 3 (10-inch) loaves French bread
  • 4 whole eggs
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 4 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
Slice French bread into 1/2 -inch thick round croutons and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, combine eggs and egg yolks.
Using a wire whisk, whip until well-blended and set aside.
In a large saucepan, combine whipping cream, milk and sugar.
Bring mixture to a low simmer then add white chocolate.
Using a wire whisk, stir until chocolate is completely melted.
Remove pot from heat and, stirring quickly, add whipped eggs to the cream mixture.
Blend thoroughly to keep eggs from scrambling.
In a 9″ x 13″ baking dish, place bread slices in 2 to 3 layers.
Pour 1/2 of the cream mixture over the bread, allowing it to soak up most of the mixture prior to adding the rest.
Using your fingertips, press the bread gently allowing the cream mixture to be absorbed evenly into the bread.
Pour remaining cream mixture over the bread and repeat process.
Cover dish with aluminum foil and allow to soak a minimum of 5 hours prior to baking.
Bake, covered, for approximately 1 hour then remove foil and bake 45 additional minutes or until top is golden brown.

This bread pudding is actually better if chilled in the refrigerator overnight, after baking, then cut into squares and heated in individual portions in the microwave.

You may wish to create a white chocolate sauce for topping the bread pudding by combining 8 ounces of melted white chocolate and 3 ounces of heavy whipping cream. This may be done in a double boiler or microwave.

PREP TIME: 2 Hours SERVES: 6-8

The Paris Baguette for dessert! They have pastries and cakes and all kinds of good baked stuff! And they have food (sandwiches, and other eats), and coffee too.
But it’s all about the pastries.

Located in Encino in the Encino Town Center (aka Town & Country) Shopping Mall, there’s a big parking lot that’s usually pretty busy.  But once you enter, it’s a cafe, clean, no frills, with lots of light inside. It also smells pretty wonderful with all the baked goods.

Outside there’s an open patio, raised above the level of the sidewalk that fronts on Ventura boulevard. Not really good for conversation because of traffic, but a good place to sit and people watch and also view the busy activity at the Encino Commons.

Dixie’s Orange Bread!

Good Morning! Testing this Orange Bread recipe for a Facebook group.
It really helps if you have an ancient California orange tree with ripe fruit ready!

Good Morning! Fresh California Oranges!

We seeded and juiced two oranges, then cut the peel/rind from one. Outer peel and just a little inside peel/rind. We cut it into thin strips and then chopped it fine before using it. The rind cooks off and leaves little flecks of the orange peel in the bread.

It’s a good recipe, but it needs a little tweaking. We used 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/2 brown sugar this time. And we are going to try melting the butter, and adding a teaspoon of baking soda and a dash of vanilla next time.

Fresh Baked Orange Bread! Serve Warm with Butter

UPDATED Friday, March 15, 2019:
We did some Friday morning baking and made Orange Bread Take 2. As we mentioned above, we tweaked the recipe this time. Changes: one teaspoon baking soda, one teaspoon baking powder, added one teaspoon vanilla extract, melted the butter first, and used 1/2 cup fresh OJ and 1/4 cup cran-raspberry juice. Baked it for only 50 mins. And it came out much better!

Thanksgiving Feast 2017

It’s the holiday season again, so that means it’s time for our annual Thanksgiving party and feast. It was warm and sunny, just another beautiful day in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles and Southern California, and time for a celebration. We always wonder why people want to face traffic and crowds to travel to miserable weather for the holidays when they can have summer here in late November and December!

We had about 20 guests this year (family and friends) and the party started an hour earlier at 3pm in the afternoon. The agenda for the evening (as always) is welcome, drinks and appetizers as the meal prep is finished, and then dinner and dessert served buffet style.

Thanksgiving 2017 – Pretty Flowers!

Would you like to start with an adult beverage?

On The Menu: 2 large turkeys, 3 kinds of stuffing, corn pudding, creamed spinach, asparagus, cauliflower & brussel sprouts, garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potato & carrot puree, homemade challah bread, cranberry sauce, and dessert. I made Grandma’s Cherry Cheesecake (big hit!), a Costco apple pie, a pumpkin pie, 3 kinds of cookies, 2 kinds of fudge and lots of booze. We also baked cornbread & muffins (see our previous Blog Post) and froze them, but there was too much food so we didn’t serve them and they will be saved for another day (or days as there are 4 batches in the freezer). And there was a bread and hummus appetizer which we didn’t eat because who wants to fill up on bread and garbanzo bean paste before a fantastic meal like this?

Thanksgiving Feast – Dessert! 2017

We usually make our Grandma’s Cherry Cheesecake for the Thanksgiving Feast.

Last year we didn’t. So everyone asked about cheesecake and they were sadly disappointed… and then we got some good Jewish guilt for the holiday. This year, by “royal decree” we were instructed that there had to be cheesecake and we did some “midnight baking” without big mixing bowls (because they were all in use for meal prep). And so there was Grandma’s Cherry Cheesecake for dessert, and it was a Big Hit and everyone was very happy!

NOTE: We are so blessed to have it so good! We are so thankful for our friends and family, and the wonderful food we have to eat, and all the modern conveniences that are usually taken for granted everyday. We also think of the less fortunate living on our city streets without homes and food and hope you will too this holiday season.

Also Thanksgiving means NFL FOOTBALL all day long on a Thursday!

THANKSGIVING TRADITION! “ALICE’S RESTAURANT” by Arlo Guthrie
“You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant (exceptin’ Alice)”

Tuesday Night Dinner at Fabrocini’s Italian Kitchen in Tarzana, CA

Tuesday Night Dinner at
Fabrocini’s Italian Kitchen
in Tarzana, CA

We are back! We wrote a new restaurant Blog post. Enjoy!

20106339_1892239410802616_8335271460111985673_n

Fabrocini’s Italian Kitchen in Tarzana, CA

We were just going to go to CPK (California Pizza Kitchen) but the parking lot was full, which indicated the restaurant would be crowded and busy, so we detoured to Fabrocini’s Italian Kitchen just two blocks away on Ventura Blvd (near Reseda Blvd) in Tarzana and we were glad that we did.

We really like this restaurant! We’ve been here before and it’s always really good. Good food, good service, good atmosphere and pretty good prices. They have free parking in the rear and there is ample metered street parking (8am-8pm everyday except Sunday).

We arrived without a reservation and were seated immediately. The dining room was busy and there were several large family parties, but unlike CPK, the noise was not a factor at all. It’s not a very big place occupying two store front windows, with the open kitchen on one side and the dining room on the other. They do good business (lunch, dinner, catering and delivery), and they also have beer & wine on premises.

20156047_1892446964115194_3990100615201505800_n

Fabrocini’s Open Kitchen and Dining Room

There are pictures of all things Italian on the walls and the Dodgers game was on the television in the dining room (as reflected on the pic below).

NOTE: We are still boycotting the Dodgers and Time-Warner/Spectrum/SportsNetLA (see the previous Blog) but it was on and we didn’t pay attention because we currently don’t care about Major League Baseball until we can watch the Dodgers games on television FOR FREE.

A GOOD dinner!  The service (waitstaff & busboy) was excellent and the management strives to make sure everything is beyond satisfactory. We should add that although our intention was to eat at CPK, the experience at Fabrocini’s was much better! We still like CPK, but the difference in the quality of food, service and care between a family owned restaurant and a huge corporate chain is exemplified in this comparison. And we should also mention, the cost wasn’t very different and there wasn’t a “loyalty club” discount involved, so we didn’t have to show them our phone or give them a code.

NOTE: Don’t fill up on bread and salad or appetizers, because the entrees are large and delicious! They also have good desserts but we didn’t indulge this time.

Berry Panna Cotta & Berry Sorbet at Gio Cucina Napoletana Italian Restaurant

Thursday evening and time for another happy birthday dinner! Neapolitan Italian Food at Gio Cucina Napoletana in Encino. We’ve eaten here before and the food has always been excellent. Tonight’s dinner was a lovely dining experience and the meal was great.

The restaurant is located on the 2nd Floor of a small shopping center/mini-mall on Ventura Blvd and in addition to the small storefront dining room and kitchen there is a large outdoor patio available for dining.

There is limited free parking in the shopping center’s front and rear lots and metered (8am-8pm) street parking available.

The restaurant has been here for years and the food is made with only fresh ingredients. The pasta and gnocchi is made from scratch. They offer rice pasta as a substitution for the “gluten free” diner and have a number of vegetarian options on the menu.

There’s a nice selection of appetizers, vegetable soups and fancy salads (and they have a Caesar Salad that’s off the menu but easily ordered with or without anchovies). There’s pizza, pasta, meat and fish entrees on the menu and always creative daily specials on the whiteboard in the dining room. If you like lasagna, try their beef or chicken lasagna.

We got there early and chose to sit inside. We had the dining room all to ourselves for most of our meal. It got busy inside just as we were finishing up.

Everything is made to order and you can almost watch them cook from across the dining room. Fresh baked bread and olive tapenade are offered as a starter. They have a nice selection of wine by the bottle or glass to choose from and their desserts are very tasty.

This picture and cutout from Valley Magazine was above our table in the dining room and provides a wonderful description of the restaurant and the dining experience:

Dinner at Gio Cucina Napoletana Italian Restaurant in Encino

“Gio’s Cucina Napoletana is a tiny restaurant with a big heart. Toques off to chef and owner Roberto Castellanos, who cooks with olive oil rather than butter, makes pasta from scratch and bakes mini-loaves of killer bread for each table. From his minuscule open kitchen, Castellanos presides over a menu of variety and quality. His dairy-free pureed vegetable soups have deep, rich flavor. His radicchio, endive, fennel and shaved Parmesan salad could pass muster at a  far fancier restaurant. And his homemade spaghetti with seafood in white wine-tomato sauce with roasted garlic is hearty, tasty,old-fashioned fare. I’ve yet to try the cracker thin pizza, but it’s next on the list. Prices are reasonable, making it easy to go back.” – Valley Magazine May-June 2008

On The Menu: Meat Lasagna, 1/2 Caesar Salad, fresh baked bread with olive tapenade, fried calamari with marinara sauce, berry panna cotta & berry sorbet, tiramisu and a coke

NOTE: There was also lobster & vegetable risotto and mushroom & vegetable pasta as the other entrees (not pictured). Both dishes received excellent reviews!

NOTE: We sent the fried calamari back. It was pan fried, not deep fried, in a very light batter and two of us were fine with the preparation, but two of us didn’t like it.

Here’s a pic of one of the best dishes we ordered at a previous dinner: Hawaiian Prawns with spaghetti, garlic and olive oil:

Beef Lasagna at Gio Cucina Napoletana

My old college friend Kent came out to the valley and took me to dinner. We went to Gio Cucina Napoletana and had some great Italian food. Carpacchio, fresh baked bread and olive tapenade, fried calamari, Caesar salad, beef lasagna, tiramisu, red wine (cabernet sauvignon) and a coke. So much fun.

Feel Awful? Have a Falafel! Here’s a Falafel Recipe:

Feel Awful? Have a Falafel!

Falafel-Mediterranean

Falafel is a deep-fried ball or patty made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both. Falafel is a traditional Middle Eastern food, commonly served in a pita, which acts as a pocket, or wrapped in a flatbread known as lafa; “falafel” also frequently refers to a wrapped sandwich that is prepared in this way. The falafel balls are topped with salads, pickled vegetables, hot sauce, and drizzled with tahini-based sauces. Falafel balls may also be eaten alone as a snack or served as part of a meze tray (assortment of appetizers). Falafel is a common dish eaten throughout the Middle East. The fritters are now found around the world as a replacement for meat and as a form of street food. (from wikipedia)

Here’s a Falafel Recipe:

1 cup dried chickpeas (and/or fava beans)
1/2 large onion, roughly chopped (about 1 cup)
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon salt
1/2-1 teaspoon dried hot red pepper
4 cloves of garlic
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon baking powder
4-6 tablespoons flour
Soybean or vegetable oil for frying

Chopped tomato for garnish
Diced onion for garnish
Diced green bell pepper for garnish
Sliced pickle for garnish
Avocado (sliced or salad) for garnish
Tahina sauce and/or Hot Sauce
Pita bread

Preparation
1. Put the chickpeas in a large bowl and add enough cold water to cover them by at least 2 inches. Let soak overnight, then drain. Or use canned chickpeas, drained.
2. Place the drained, uncooked chickpeas and the onions in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Add the parsley, cilantro, salt, hot pepper, garlic, and cumin. Process until blended but not pureed.
3. Sprinkle in the baking powder and 4 tablespoons of the flour, and pulse. You want to add enough bulgur or flour so that the dough forms a small ball and no longer sticks to your hands. Turn into a bowl and refrigerate, covered, for several hours.
4. Form the chickpea mixture into balls about the size of walnuts, or use a falafel scoop, available in Middle-Eastern markets.
5. Heat 3 inches of oil to 375 degrees in a deep pot or wok and fry 1 ball to test. If it falls apart, add a little flour. Then fry about 6 balls at once for a few minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Cooking a nice steak dinner!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Cooking a nice steak dinner!

This Blog entry is about FOOD. Good Food! Food that’s good for you!
If you’re not into reading about a nice steak dinner, please move along.

It was a beautiful Sunday in the San Fernando Valley today. The weather was great! The first Sunday after football is always the hardest… but a beautiful day makes it easier.

Valentine’s Day is such a rip-off holiday. So, instead of going out and paying triple for dinner, I decided to cook a really nice holiday feast.

On the Menu: Teriyaki bone-in ribeye steaks, baked potato, steamed broccoli and carrots, green salad with ranch dressing, challah bread, red wine and a coke.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Cooking a steak dinner!

Defrosted a couple of bone-in ribeye steaks, prepped the potato, yam & vegetables and then made the salad. Timed it out perfectly and everything was done just right.

Nothing fancy, just a nice dinner at home.

Sauteed the red onions, marinaded the meat and pan cooked the steak. One steak cooked rare, one cooked medium rare. (leftovers for tomorrow: steak and eggs maybe?)

Very happy with the final results! Better than most restaurants and a lot less expensive.
