Espresso is a type of coffee made using high water pressure and finely ground beans to produce a small, concentrated shot of brewed coffee.
Espresso is a coffee-brewing method of Italian origin, in which a small amount of nearly boiling water (about 190°F) is forced under 9–10 bars of pressure through finely-ground coffee beans.

193678331_4821246847901843_9190736391558185761_n

Espresso is coffee brewed under pressure and requires a dark roast with a fine grind.
When a shot of espresso is pulled, all of the components of the crushed coffee beans are extracted by the percolation of hot water through tightly packed and finely ground coffee.

8-ounces = 1 cup.
The exception is the standard (hot) mug-served cup of coffee measuring 6-ounces.
Today’s “cup” of coffee in the US is usually 4-ounces brewed using 5-ounces of water.

Caffeine blocks the inhibitory neurotransmitter adenosine, so the amount of other neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and dopamine) increases, leading to the enhanced firing of neurons in the human brain (a stimulant effect).

“It is “generally safe” for most people to consume three to four cups of coffee per day,
and that doing so may actually reduce the risk of certain health conditions.”

We are not a medical professional. We just LOVE coffee.
Overwhelming evidence has shown that when consumed in moderation (400mg of caffeine per day) four cups of coffee are safe for the general population. Federal dietary guidelines suggest three to five 8-ounce cups of coffee per day (up to 400 milligrams of caffeine) can be a part of a healthy diet.

SCIENCE!
Coffee contains nutrients, including riboflavin (B-2), niacin (B-3), pantothenic acid (B-5) magnesium, potassium, manganese, and various phenolic compounds (polyphenols are antioxidants).

Coffee can reduce the risk of liver cancer, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis.
Italian researchers found coffee consumption lowers the risk of liver cancer by ~40%.
Coffee may help protect against type 2 diabetes.
Coffee may also lower the risk of gallstone disease
Caffeine may help prevent Parkinson’s disease.

Coffee in moderation (two 8-ounce servings per day) may protect against heart failure and may lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Several studies show coffee drinkers have up to a 65% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Black coffee (without milk/cream) is very low in calories: only ~2 calories.
Of course adding milk, cream or sugar will increase the calories in the drink.

“Coffee is the most important meal of the day.”

Caffeine can improve mental performance:
focus, alertness, attention and concentration.
Caffeine in coffee is a mild stimulant for the CNS (central nervous system).
It is the best mood-lifting agent due to the antioxidants
and blocks mood-depressing chemicals in the brain.
And it has been associated with a lessened risk of depression.
Caffeine consumption may be associated
with an increase in the availability of dopamine receptors in the brain
Drinking at least two cups of coffee per day
promotes the greatest mental health benefits.

Caffeine can boost metabolic rate by 3–11% and can increase fat burning
by as much as 10% in obese individuals and 29% in lean people.
Caffeine can improve physical performance by 11–12%, on average,
and it increases adrenaline levels and the release of fatty acids from fat tissues.

NOTE: Pre-Northern Renaissance Faire in 1987, we worked mobile security during the week and our good friend Dave Coker was rebuilding the alestands that had been left to rot after the Living History Centre ran out of money for teardown in 1986. We had too much fun that summer! May his memory be blessing!

Irish Coffee
is a cocktail made with hot coffee, Irish whiskey, cream and sugar.
Ingredients:
1-1/3 oz (2 parts) Irish whiskey
1 oz (1½ parts) fresh cream
2-2/3 oz (4 parts) hot coffee
1 teaspoon of Brown sugar (or to taste)
Shaved, powdered, or liquid chocolate for garnish (optional)
Directions:
Make the coffee. Heat the coffee, whiskey and sugar; but do not boil.
Pour into a glass or coffee cup, stir, and top with (whipped) cream.
Garnish with chocolate (optional). Serve hot.

In a footed glass mug, add whiskey (Jameson’s is recommended but any good Irish whisky will do), add the brown sugar and stir, warm it slightly (do not boil), and then ignite the vapors. This will caramelize the sugar as well as warm the mug. Blow out the flame after about ten seconds and then fill the mug with a strong coffee. Leave a finger’s width of space at the top, add heavy whipped cream by laying the cream over the back of a spoon, so it floats on top.
NOTE: Caramelizing the sugar will make the drink taste much better!

White Russian (aka “a caucasian, man”)

mqdefault

“Do I drink White Russians all the time? …
The reason it was White Russians is you could have a lot more fun
with a White Russian than you can with say, a vodka soda.”
– Jeff Dowd, the real Dude inspiration

16387067_1669019309791295_8522988273719717196_n

White Russian

The traditional cocktail known as a Black Russian first appeared in 1949.
The drink becomes a White Russian – just add fresh cream or half and half.
Neither drink has any known Russian origin.
Both drinks are named for the vodka that is the primary liquor ingredient.

The White Russian was popularized by Jeffrey ‘The Dude’ Lebowski
(aka actor Jeff Bridges), in the Coen Brothers’ 1998 film “The Big Lebowski”
but the drink has been around since the mid 1960’s.

NOTE: Use an 80-proof vodka, mix a White Russian according to the recipe,
and it would be approximately 24 percent Alcohol by Volume (or 48 proof).

Friday! National Donut Day USA!

It’s Friday, June 3rd, 2016! We thought we might try to “live blog” the day.

My dogs and a couple guests Friday morning chillin’ on the backyard patio:

13325685_1404896769536885_2587781591561585860_n

What time does the poker game start?

Woke up and got out of bed. We had bacon, grapefruit, a glass of orange-pineapple juice and an iced espresso for breakfast, and then a dill pickle, some tortilla chips and another iced espresso later on.

Social Media Time! Set up this Blog and worked on our other Social Media platforms, went through the emails and did other stuff in the Home Office until lunchtime.

NOTE: We are now back on SnapChat! @JoshWillTravel

b2ap3_thumbnail_snapchat-for-business

We made a cheese quesadilla for lunch. It was quick and filling.

Dropped one of the dogs off at the pet groomer and then ran some local errands.

It’s National Donut Day 2016 in the USA! (see our previous Blog)
We went to get some donuts…

Dunkin’ Donuts at Ventura Blvd and Balboa Blvd

We stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts and there was a parking spot in front, but then when we got out of the car and walked over, the line was out the door!

LUNCHTIME RUSH! No Progress after 10 Minutes! Time to Bail!

We waited for about ten minutes without making progress or getting inside the doorway of the donut shop, so we bailed! Not very well managed if you ask me, offering a free donut with beverage purchase, and knowing there would be a rush at lunchtime…

So we drove a few blocks north on Balboa Blvd to Stop In Donuts at Victory Blvd. There was a parking spot in front and a pan handler in the lot.

Stop In Donuts at Victory Blvd and Balboa Blvd in Encino, California

There wasn’t a line (in fact it was us and the owner and her daughter alone in the shop) and so we bought a bag of donuts! Five donuts: Cinnamon Roll, Apple Fritter, 2 cake with chocolate frosting and a chocolate glazed with sprinkles for $6.30 cash and then they gave us a half dozen donut holes for free! (but we had to ask) And in tribute to Mitch Hedberg…THEY DIDN’T GIVE US A RECEIPT! (and we didn’t ask for one) Thanks Stop In Donuts!

Bag of Donuts from Stop In Donuts in Encino, California

We went to the local Post Office. Then instead of running our other errands we returned home because the temperature was 100 degrees in the San Fernando Valley and we wanted to bring the other four dogs inside the house and out of the afternoon heat.

Time to EAT the Donuts! Five donuts: Cinnamon Roll, Apple Fritter, 2 cake with chocolate frosting and a chocolate glazed with sprinkles for $6.30 cash and then they gave me a half dozen donut holes for free (not pictured)

Siesta! Afternoon nap time! Too hot for humans or dogs outside!

We woke up from our nap and it was still hot outside. The other dog was returned home from the pet groomer looking pretty and smelling nice.

Temperature at 6pm: 95 degrees! Hot in the San Fernando Valley Tonight!

Hot in the San Fernando Valley Tonight!

We fed the dogs, got ready to go out and then drove to NoHo. When we arrived there was food cooking on the grill! We drank a beer (Pabst Blue Ribbon) and waited for dinner time!

Texas BBQ Dinner in North Hollywood at a friend’s house:

Dinner is Served! Texas/NoHo BBQ: Ribs, Beans, Bread & a Dr Pepper

On The Menu: Texas BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Beans, Bread and Butter with a Dr Pepper!

Dinner was a total surprise, and we weren’t expecting to eat so well. We didn’t eat until late, and then after a little post dinner digesting, we drove home.

And then we logged on to the internet around midnight and got the BAD NEWS:

Jeb Bush had a good breakdown of everything that was wrong with Trump’s tweet: “It’s like eating a watermelon and saying ‘I love African-Americans”

Trump said this today at a rally in San Jose: “We had a case where we had an African-American guy who was a fan of mine….Look at my African-American over here. Look at him. Are you the greatest? You know what I’m talking about?”

Trump is a “Cheap Fraud!”
And federal judge Gonzalo Curiel, who Trump called “A Hater” and “we believe, Mexican” ordered the release of internal Trump University documents and also ordered that ‪‎Trump‬ will go to trial starting Nov. 28 in a civil case in which he is accused of defrauding students who attended. Former managers of  the for-profit school portray it as an unscrupulous business that relied on high-pressure sales tactics, employed unqualified instructors, made deceptive claims and exploited vulnerable students willing to pay.

“I believe that Trump University was a fraudulent scheme,” Mr. Schnackenberg wrote in his testimony, “and that it preyed upon the elderly and uneducated to separate them from their money.”

Trump is a Liar and a Con Man who uses “Veterans as Props to Get Votes”
“For four months, Donald Trump didn’t cut the check to veterans groups that he claimed he had, and had not raised the money he said he did. And he never would have, unless investigations by multiple outlets had exposed him.” Former US Marine Alexander McCoy organized a protest outside of Trump Tower, demanding that the billionaire “apologize for using Veterans as props to get votes while failing to keep his promises.” After weeks of media scrutiny about donations he promised to veterans groups, Trump held a news conference Tuesday. The Washington Post and the Associated Press reported Trump sent many of the checks after reporters began asking the campaign questions about the fate of the donations. The total also fell far short of the $6 million Trump had been bragging about.

First Amendment and The Constitution?
Trump insulted the Press during the news conference and ABC News’ Tom Llamas was branded a “sleaze” for asking about the gap between the $5.6 million and the $6 million in donations. His question: “You said you had raised $6 million. Clearly you had not. Your critics say you tend to exaggerate and have a problem with the truth.”

And a Trump campaign staffer and private security guard removed a Politico reporter from the San Jose rally on Thursday for reporting on the event without permission as violent demonstrations and protests erupted outside the venue.

Memorial Day Weekend 2016

Memorial Day Weekend 2016

US_Flag_Backlit

USA! The United States of America!

Memorial Day: A Day of Remembrance!
Originally it was called Decoration Day. A day when Americans went to cemeteries and placed flags or flowers on the graves of the war dead. It was a day to remember ancestors, family members, and loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice and died in service for the United States of America. Waterloo, New York, was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, but over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of the holiday. Decoration Day was created during the Civil War to honor the dead. It was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic: “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.”

Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years and many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of the day. At many cemeteries, the graves of American war dead are increasingly ignored or neglected while backyard barbecues and a three day weekend are now the only celebration of the holiday.

FRIDAY

Our “three day weekend” began on Friday afternoon.

On The Menu: 2 beef tacos, a cheese enchilada, Mexican rice, refried beans, a green salad with ranch dressing, fresh made tortilla chips & spicy salsa and a Dr Pepper.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!
Memorial Day Weekend in Los Angeles is a “Maximum Enforcement” period by local law enforcement to combat drunk driving. On our way to NoHo we saw LAPD Metro cops on motorcycles already patrolling the San Fernando Valley. Once again we were the designated driver, so we didn’t drink any alcohol before dinner or at the restaurant, so our friend could enjoy his beers and stay safe in North Hollywood.

SATURDAY

Chore Day! Laundry and Spring Cleaning! We spent most of the day trying to clean and get organized. We are on a mission to get rid of the clutter and stuff we don’t need.

We finished and posted a new Blog about the “Slugfest in Hollywood” on Tuesday: the Dixie Hollywood Hotel, Dinner at Susan Finegar’s Mud Hen Tavern and The Cure at the Hollywood Bowl”.

And a pretty boring Saturday night at home…

Dinner: Enchilada Nachos!

Dinner: Enchilada Nachos! Used the leftover Mexican food from last night: cheese enchilada cut up with the rice and beans and then more cheese over tortilla chips with taco bell hot sauce. “Life is short, make it saucy!”

And we watched “The Intern” with Robert Deniro and Anne Hathaway on HBO. A cute film about a 70 year old retired business man (played by Deniro) who interns for a successful online women’s clothing company owned by a young, overworked woman with an adorable young child and a “stay at home” husband (played by Hathaway). The cast is rounded out by a crew of young, nerdy “Tech Bros” and Rene Russo as the company masseuse.

It’s really a romantic comedy without the romance between Deniro and Hathaway, adding Rene Russo as the hot, younger old person and love interest. It was a fun movie with a great cast, but the happy ending was kind of lacking in resolution and could have been much better! Deniro got to chew on the scenery and play a custom tailored part and that’s what he’s great at. Hathaway is a terrific actress, and this role mirrors her part in “The Devil Wears Prada” as a young and successful working woman conquering adversity.

Hot Tamales!

We also did a little Periscope viewing too. We watched The Cure live from Washington and Steven Brody Stevens killing it and rockin’ comedy at the Improv on Melrose.

And then we worked on laying out this Blog until we got tired and fell asleep.

SUNDAY

We slept in and then made breakfast/brunch.

Sunday Breakfast – Bacon and Eggs!

Sunday Breakfast: Scrambled eggs with cheese & hot sauce, bacon, English muffins with peanut butter & raspberry jam, nectarine, orange juice and an iced espresso.

And we were going to do stuff today and then we turned on HBO and saw they were running a marathon of “The Pacific”, the under appreciated follow up to “Band of Brothers” in honor of Memorial Day. It’s a great period piece about World War II and the war against the Japanese. So, we didn’t watch all 10 hours, but we did watch…and worked.

Hot Dogs! Sunday afternoon with the dogs in the backyard:

We were invited to go to the movies, but passed because we didn’t want to see the film and we hate going to the theatre on weekends or holidays because there are just too many people, and all it really takes is one person with a cell phone to ruin the experience for me. So, we stayed at the home office and someone brought me dinner!

Sunday “To Go” Dinner delivered: Orange chicken, steamed rice, sautéed vegetables from The Cheesecake Factory and a Dr Pepper. Tasty “comfort” food makes me happy.

Sunday night “must see TV” on HBO: New episodes of “Game of Thrones”, “Silicon Valley” and a previously aired episode of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”

SPOILER ALERT!

“Hold the door!” We waited all week for this episode of Game of Thrones. Last week’s episode “The Door” was excellent. And sad. And emotionally involving. And as always, there are so many story lines running that each episode feels incomplete…
And so, with great anticipation we waited and watched this week’s episode.

Do you think Hodor will return as a wight?

NOTE: “Silicon Valley” is “genius” humor.
This week’s episode was pretty great. Oh the Bachmanity!

MONDAY – It’s Memorial Day!

Grapefruit, coffee, leftover cold orange chicken for breakfast and then back to bed…

The annual “Band of Brothers” marathon on HBO was interrupted by a LIVE televised Memorial Day Holiday High Speed Pursuit at noon!

Band_of_Brothers_poster

“Band of Brothers” is a 2001 American war drama based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1993 non-fiction book. It is based on the true World War Two story of the men of Easy Company from the US Army 101st Airborne division who fought in Europe during the war.

NOTE: We’ve seen “Band of Brothers” in it’s entirety a couple of times. So when a social media alert was broadcast about another LIVE high speed pursuit in Los Angeles, we switched over and began watching the car chase.

Memorial Day Holiday High Speed Pursuit in Southern California

The French Open was rained out so NBC stayed on the chase that started at about 10:30am… Stolen vehicle: a silver KIA Sorrento SUV with an “impaired” driver on surface streets in East Los Angeles. We picked up the pursuit at noon as the suspect got on the empty freeways and continued driving for almost 3 hours. NBC commentary was complete speculation and stupidity, so we switched over to ABC and then KCAL9 (our local CBS affiliate). Please just the facts, not ignorant newscaster’s uninformed opinions!

And Fox 11 had coverage too:

Memorial Day Holiday High Speed Pursuit in Southern California

At 1pm, KCAL 9 and FOX both cut off their news coverage and returned to regular programming, so we switched back to ABC and NBC because KTLA 5 News didn’t pick up the chase at all for their one o’clock broadcast. And just after 1pm he ran out of gas on the 405 near the Long Beach Freeway, smoked some more meth in the car and then surrendered without further incident to the California Highway Patrol.

Monday Lunchtime!

Monday Lunchtime! A bacon, lettuce and cheese sandwich on challah bread; dill pickle, celery, carrots, blueberries, red grapes and pineapple juice.

Afternoon CHILLIN’ in the backyard and more episodes of “Band of Brothers” while getting some work done in the office was how we spent the rest of the day.

Monday Memorial Day Holiday Chillin’ on the Backyard Patio

We worked, we cleaned, we played with the dogs.

And then we got hungry and went to see what ingredients we had for dinner. We decided to make some pasta and did a little fancy cooking in the kitchen:

Dinner on Monday: Spaghetti with garlic alfredo sauce, grilled chicken, stir-fried broccoli & sautéed onions and a coke.

Where did the three day weekend go? Mostly boring. We hope you had a good one!

REMEMBER THE FALLEN! Some gave all so you could BBQ in peace.
Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Taco Tuesday! Dinner at El Torito Mexican Restaurant in Sherman Oaks

Taco Tuesday! Mexican food at El Torito in Sherman Oaks.

Thinking about chips and salsa! We hit up the El Torito Mexican Restaurant at Ventura blvd and Van Nuys blvd. There’s a parking lot that’s always full, valet parking and (TIP) street parking available. If you get lucky, you’ll find a parking space in the lot. If you’re smart you’ll find street parking at a meter on Ventura blvd, Moorpark street or Van Nuys blvd.

Enter through the double doors and into the reception area. There’s a Taco Bar (and Lunch and Brunch) Buffet area and a hallway to the restrooms on the left. The Bar is ahead of you behind the hostess desk and the large dining room divided into three areas is to the right.

Dinner at El Torito Mexican Restaurant in Sherman Oaks

The Bar is usually busy, and on Tuesdays it is really crowded because of the Taco Tuesday $1.99 Taco special (It used to be $1.00) and the Taco Bar spread which is only available in the Bar area. It’s also very loud with music and conversation, so we decided on the regular menu and a comfortable booth in a quiet corner of the center dining room.

At the Bar at El Torito in Sherman Oaks

The Bar is pretty fun if you can find a seat. They have beer, wine and spirits. Usually there’s a tequila drink (margarita) on special or it’s “happy hour” and there’s always a game on the televisions and loud music playing.

Besides the Taco special and Taco Bar Buffet, they have a Bar Menu with appetizers and small plates and you can order off the regular menu in the Bar area as well.

Taco Tuesday! The Taco Bar Buffet at El Torito in Sherman Oaks

I haven’t tried the lunch buffet or Saturday/Sunday brunch in a long time, but it’s a pretty good value and a they have a lot of different choices available. A Mexican food buffet is always pretty good! Tacos, burrito makings, fajitas, enchiladas, tamales, rice, beans, desserts, fruit, salads, soups, salsas and more; and then breakfast foods, menudo, juices and pastries for the weekend Brunch buffets.

Center Dining Room at El Torito Mexican Restaurant in Sherman Oaks

The Dining Room is large and spacious, and divided into three areas. There are tables and large booths available. The menu is traditional Mexican (gringo-style) fare, but they recently upgraded the recipes and the food is very tasty and you get a lot of it!

The chips are made fresh and served warm with roasted pepper salsa. They’ll make fresh guacamole at your table if you order it. They have a good selection of appetizers, entrees and ala carte items. Not so much on dessert, only deep fried ice cream, flan and a tres leches cake. Free refills on soda and most other beverages and more chips and salsa too.

Happy Birthday! Mexican Birthday Song at El Torito Restaurant!

It wasn’t my birthday, but the waitstaff came over and sang to the table next to ours so I got a nice picture. The service was excellent! I didn’t have to look around for our waiter because he was checking in with us regularly. When I finished the coke, he was right there asking “would you like a refill?”. Every request was handle promptly and the Manager even came by to ask how everything was.

The prices are reasonable. The Buffets and Specials are a pretty good value if you’re hungry and want to eat a lot of food. Drinks are also pretty reasonable and some of the drink specials are excellent! You get a lot of food and we even got a AAA discount on the check!

It was a very good meal and a pleasant dining experience. Good food and lot of it. The service was excellent and it wasn’t too expensive. A Very Happy Taco Tuesday!
