2:22pm: Monday! Monday, Monday! Well, it was a helluva weekend newswise.

We were up most of the early AM as usual and we didn’t really sleep much. The dogs were impatient this morning and we took them outside and then fed them breakfast and then we were outside. And we did some chores today: laundry, dishes, vacuuming, scoop the poop, etc.

And the housekeeper came and cleaned and we took a long nap with the dogs.
We woke up and we took them outside again. It’s a beautiful day!
HOT, but not as hot as yesterday or last week.
And the housekeeper finished and left, and the dogs are napping.
We are back in the Home Office setting up this Blog Post for Monday.

We ordered a pizza delivery for dinner.
On The Menu: Extra-large pizza with sausage and meatball

Comet Neowise 2020

Have you seen the “once in a lifetime” Comet Neowise?
We have been looking for it every night this week, and still haven’t seen it.
Light pollution, the marine layer, and the urban landscape are to blame.
We really want to see it before it disappears, once in a lifetime and all.

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 – TravelTuesday! NotGoingAnywhereToday

9:20am: We’ve been up all morning again. We took care of the dogs (breakfast and outside stuff) and got the newspapers. We’ve had two cups of espresso, so ZING.

The guys are here to paint the house! Because it needs painting, that’s why!
So, today they are power washing the whole house, and then they’ll be back to start painting this week. But today, already found out that there’s one door that needs weatherstripping….. a little water got in. And it sounds like a drive-thru car wash in the Home Office right now.

115902431_3858874214139116_3867864148354659518_o

10:45am: So, we heated up some leftover pizza for breakfast.
The guys are working around the house pretty fast! We found a couple more leaks too.
We spent most of the hour with the dogs, so they wouldn’t freak out too much.
And now they’re napping in the other room, now that the guys have moved to the other side of the house.

2:45pm: FUCK YOU TRUMP! FUCK YOU ABC POLITICS!

Trump’s “New Tone” – FUCK YOU!

5:30pm: High Speed Pursuit!
This one started in our neighborhood! Lots of helicopters in the air too!
This one was CRAZY! The LAPD had two opportunities to stop it, and it was really dangerous! 100 MILES AN HOUR ON SURFACE STREETS!
The news choppers lost him in the marine layer in Rancho Palos Verde, but the suspect was in custody not too long after. We don’t know how it ended.

10:00am: The painters are here.
They told me 8:30am yesterday, but 10am is cool, right?

There are a lot more protesters in Portland, Oregon tonight!

We watched the Portland, Oregon protest last night for a few hours
and then slept for a few hours. We woke up really early of course.
We took care of the dogs and we got the newspapers as usual.
We had a cup of espresso and we just posted last weekend’s Blog Post.
So, we are adding today (Wed) and updating Monday and Tuesday.

We also updated our Blog Post “Bob Thomas, Renaissance Man” which is getting a lot of traffic because of the Nike-Grateful Dead Athletic Shoe release.  AND FUCK NIKE!
It’s just another CA$H-GRAB! They’re totally $elling out! $110.00 – $140.00 a pair!
Turning into Corporate Shills! Buy another CD box set please! They need the money!
NOTE: If you want to see pictures of their ugly fuckin’ shoes, go to our Blog Post!

On The Menu: A “crispy” steak burrito with rice, cheese, avocado, salsa verde and crushed tortilla chips for breakfast, because we didn’t make it for dinner last night.

3:00pm: The gardeners just finished. They had to work around the painters, and the chaos caused by yesterday’s steam cleaning. Today the painters are masking and spraying the base color, and they did almost half of the house.
We just woke up from a nice nap.
We got the mail, and moved our car, and then made an iced espresso.
It’s HOT again today. And we moved our car again. And we were outside with the dogs.
And now we’re chillin’ in the Home Office, and we can hear the painters outside.
There’s plastic sheeting on the doors and windows, so we are sealed inside right now.

Getting down with Josh Daniels Grateful Band streaming LIVE on Facebook. DAY 128!
Josh Daniels solo from home and HE ROCKS HARD everyday and it’s great music!
And now Steve Wariner “Wariner Wednesdays” and Billy Strings LIVE from City Winery in Nashville too!

107914501_3693260730690720_8819227229757536091_n

7:00pm: The painters finished for the day. We took the dogs outside and they got fed.
And then we scooped the poop and cleaned up the yard a little. Everything is moved around and there’s work stuff (paint, equipment, tools, etc.) everywhere. It’s a mess.

And now we’re getting hungry.

FUCK.

We watched the Portland, Oregon protest LIVE again. The number of protesters gets bigger every night now that the Feds have started attacking American VOTERS!

Screen Shot 2020-07-26 at 18.59.08

And the Mayor of Portland (and he’s also the Police Chief) made an appearance, held a press conference, then went through the crowd to the fence and barrier in front of the Federal Courthouse (which is new tonight). And he and his security detail were soon teargassed along with the rest of the protesters LIVE on cameras. The militants in the crowd started yelling profanities and were verbally terrorizing the Mayor, and started to get the crowd riled up with the chant “F*CK TED WHEELER!” So after a round of teargas and with the threat of an angry mob, the Mayor and his security guys pushed their way through the crowd, maybe got hit by an egg or two, and retreated to the Portland Building nearby. Later that evening after midnight, the Portland Police labeled it a riot and moved in on the protesters too. GOOD PHOTO OP TED, it made all the news feeds!

CALIFORNIA IS F*CKED!

Thursday, July 24, 2020

The painters started at 8:00am. The doors and windows are covered in plastic wrap.
The dogs got taken care of, they got fed and we were outside a few times when the painters weren’t in the little yard and we took then out front on the leash when they were in the backyard. The housekeeper came again today and we isolated in the Home Office while she was here. We got the newspaper and the mail.
And then nothing happened all day.

Opening Day for Major League Baseball today.
Just want to take a moment to say F*CK BASEBALL!
And F*CK THE DODGERS/SPECTRUM/SPORTSNET too!
I bet, two weeks until there’s an outbreak.
And sports are just a distraction from what’s important now!

SATURDAY AFTERNOON NO BUENO.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON NO BUENO.

TRIGGER-WARNING

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): a mental health condition that’s triggered by a traumatic or terrifying event – either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares or unwanted memories of the trauma, severe anxiety, depression, avoidance of situations that bring back memories of the trauma, anger, insomnia, heightened reactions, panic attacks, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

NOTE: Triggered by a situation that was not of my making, extra frustrating because I  knew it might happen and gave a warning, and then my warning was ignored.

WARNING_CORRECTIVE_ACTION_LABEL_100_X_100MM-page-001

Saturday – some time after 2pm:
I can’t focus. I can’t stop crying.
I’m going back and forth between uncontrollable anger and uncontrollable sadness.
Trying to countdown from 10 and can’t make it past 8….
For someone always “in control” this is beyond uncomfortable.

I’m starving because I didn’t have dinner last night and I want to make steak tacos, but as I was pounding the meat a few minutes ago I lost all interest in making food. And as I was losing it again, I thought maybe writing about how I was feeling would help, if not me maybe someone else.

My stomach is growling and bubbling with anxiety, and have a headache that feels like my head is in a pressure cooker, I’m feeling incredibly stressed and also ready to jump into a fight, but there’s no one here but me. And my heart feels like its gonna pop out of my chest like the creature in “Alien”….

There’s football on TV and I don’t care. The sound is off and I’m not able to pay attention to it. And I’m still on the verge of crying. Which is probably better than being balled up in bed weeping like I was 30 minutes ago before I went into the kitchen to make food.

KEEP IT TOGETHER. KEEP IT TOGETHER. KEEP IT TOGETHER.
IT IS NOT A JOKE.
The condition may last months or years, with triggers that can bring back memories of the trauma accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions.

There are sirens from far away that set me off. I can hear them because I was sitting here in silence, and it’s a beautiful day outside, and the windows are open… but I can’t enjoy the beautiful day and I’m fucking sad. A few hours ago I was raging. Full of anger.
I still want to break something. Or grab a hammer or baseball bat and go to work.
But that’s not allowed.

Taking a lot of deep breaths and keep closing my eyes. And the fucking plumber is here fixing a toilet, so I can’t leave, not that I want to, but I can’t. And he keeps setting of the Ring chime to remind that he’s here fixing the toilet for hours.

And now I’m starving again with a fucking headache and the Ring chime keeps ringing. And now I’m crying again. KEEP IT ToGETHER.
It’s 5:01pm on Saturday. It should have been a nice day.
TOTAL FUCKING BUZZKILL.

Thinking, “should I edit this?” as I read what I wrote……. NO, just gonna leave it alone.
Probably won’t ever get published. PTSD is real. Depression is a killer.

Maybe we should talk about the weather. Out of the corner of our eye, I noticed football was over and boxing was beginning, so I changed the channel to the news and turned on the volume and it was the weather. Now it’s commercials. Volume off again.

Back to sitting here in silence, well not exactly, because the birds are making noise outside the window and the fucking plumber is still here.
Okay going to try food again. That will help with the headache I expect.
KEEP IT TOGETHER. Still just sitting here. 5:15pm
And now we’ve calmed down some, and we feel totally exhausted again. And our neck hurts from the stress. And the news is back on with the sound on and it’s the weather again on another channel. Timelapse of the Aurora Borealis in Finland… wow, we’d like to see that. news and commercials. MUTE.
Do we want food? I have to feed the dogs. 5:25pm

84346923_3439339252759283_4194373887707840512_o

6:50pm UPDATE: The plumber finished. I thanked him and he left.
I fed and took care of the dogs and then made food. It had a calming effect.
Steak soft tacos with fresh guacamole and cran-raspberry juice for dinner.
Dogs are happy, and resting quietly. I feel better now.
THIS IS NO JOKE. Keep it together. Breathe.

WARNING_CORRECTIVE_ACTION_LABEL_100_X_100MM-page-001

NOTE: Our calm was restored, and the situation was corrected at 9pm. It was a very difficult day. I continued to work on this Blog Post but did not edit the original section.

People with PTSD are dangerous! There is a risk after the traumatic event of personality changes with serious individual and social consequences.

Update Monday February 17, 2020:
It took almost a day to recover (yesterday) and to return to “normal” and we are still feeling some after effects from Saturday’s freakout. Reviewing and reflecting on our feelings and trying to process it all. You don’t know about PTSD until you’ve been there.

Today is Friday the 13th, 2017!

“I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair… Borne, like a vapor on the summer air!”
“Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair” by Stephen C. Foster

The fear of the number 13 has been given a scientific name: “triskaidekaphobia” and the fear of Friday the 13th is “paraskevidekatriaphobia” or “friggatriskaidekaphobia”.

Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition.
stream_img

Friday, October 13, 1307: To free himself from his debts, Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of the Knights Templar. He tortured them into admitting heresy and then burned many of them at the stake.

The first documented mention of the day can be found in Henry Sutherland Edwards’ 1869 biography of Italian composer Gioachino Rossini (known for “The Barber of Seville” 1816 and “The William Tell Overture” 1829), who died on Friday, November 13th, 1868 in Paris, France:

“He was surrounded to the last by admiring friends; and if it be true that, like so many Italians, he regarded Fridays as an unlucky day and thirteen as an unlucky number, it is remarkable that on Friday 13th of November he passed away.”

“Friday the Thirteenth” a 1907 book written by American businessman Thomas Lawson, may have further perpetuated the superstition. In the story, an unscrupulous broker takes advantage of the superstition to create a Wall Street panic on Friday the 13th.

On “Black Friday” September 24, 1869 a failed plot to corner the market at the New York Gold Exchange and left many wealthy investors broke. Jay Gould and James Fisk (aka The Gold Ring) tried to buy as much gold as they could to drive up the price. The plot was discovered, President Ulysses S. Grant released $4 million worth of gold into the market, the price of gold dropped and the speculators were ruined.

“When Black Friday comes I’m gonna dig myself a hole
Gonna lay down in it ’til I satisfy my soul”
“Black Friday” by Steely Dan

Biblical origins: Jesus was crucified on Good Friday. There were 13 guests at the Last Supper the night before the crucifixion. Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, has been named as “the 13th guest”.

Norse mythology traces the superstition back to a story of a banquet at Valhalla where Loki, the demi god of mischief came unannounced as the 13th guest and caused chaos.

According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina,  17 to 21 million Americans suffer from Fear of Friday the 13th. Symptoms range from mild anxiety and a nagging sense of doom to full-blown panic attacks.

Many businesses (like airlines and casinos) suffer from severe losses on Friday the 13th. Most high-rise buildings, hotels and hospitals don’t have a “13th floor” and most airports avoid having gates with the number 13. In many countries, having 13 people at the dinner table is considered bad luck.

There is little evidence that Friday the 13th is actually an unlucky day. Studies have shown that Friday the 13th has little or no effect on events like accidents, hospital visits and natural disasters.

8aae904ade5c08874c200ceb8e1cc9d5

Friday 13th is a lucky day in many Spanish speaking countries. Instead Tuesday the 13th (13 Martes) is considered the unluckiest day. The ancient Greeks also consider Tuesday (and especially the 13th) an unlucky day. Friday the 13th is also considered a lucky day for children to be born on.

Alfred Hitchcock, “the master of suspense”, was born on August 13, 1899. His directorial debut was the film “Number 13” in 1922.

There will be another Friday the 13th this year (2017) in the month of October.

Stephen C. Foster (July 4, 1826 – January 13, 1864)

Stephen C. Foster died on January 13, 1864 at the age of 37. Born on July 4, 1826 in Lawrenceville (now Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania. He is known as “The Father of American Music.” He wrote over 200 songs, primarily parlor and minstrel music, including “Oh! Susanna” (the anthem of the California Gold Rush) “Camptown Races” “My Old Kentucky Home” (became the official state song of Kentucky in 1928) “Old Folks at Home” (became the state song of Florida in 1935 and the lyrics were modified as the times changed) “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair” “Old Black Joe” and “Beautiful Dreamer” (released after his death)Many of his songs had Southern themes, yet Foster never lived in the South and visited it only once in 1852. Three Hollywood films have been made of his life: “Harmony Lane” (1935), 20th Century Fox’s “Swanee River”  with Don Ameche (1939) and “I Dream of Jeanie” (1952). Stephen Foster Memorial Day is a United States Federal Observance Day according to Title 36 of the United States Code. It was made law in November of 1966 and was first celebrated in 1967.

“I came from Alabama with my banjo on my knee,
I’m goin’ to Louisiana, my true love for to see,
It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry,
The sun so hot, I froze to death. Susanna dont you cry.
Oh Susanna! Oh, don’t you cry for me!
I’ve come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee.”

Russian Sculptor Peter Ganine designed and patented a floating toy “uncapsizeable duck” in 1949 (US Patent 153426 & 153514, over 50,000,000 were sold) which closely resembles the rubber ducky we have today. The rubber ducky was inducted into the New York Toy Hall of Fame in 2013 (founded in 1998, the New York Toy Hall of Fame has only inducted 52 other toys). According to a 1973 “Sesame Street” calendar, Rubber Duckie’s Birthday is on January 13. Duckie made his debut in a February 1970 episode.

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968)

Monday, January 16, 2017 – Martin Luther King Day Federal Holiday
Commemorates the birthday of American civil rights leader Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., (born Michael King Jr.) on January 15, 1929 and celebrates his life, achievements and civil rights legacy. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. The federal holiday was created in 1983 and first observed in January 1986. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. was dedicated in 2011.

From the King Center website (www.kingcenter.org):
“On this day we commemorate Dr. King’s great dream of a vibrant, multiracial nation united in justice, peace and reconciliation; a nation that has a place at the table for children of every race and room at the inn for every needy child. We are called on this holiday, not merely to honor, but to celebrate the values of equality, tolerance and interracial sister and brotherhood he so compellingly expressed in his great dream for America.”

MLK’s “I HAVE A DREAM” Speech
Delivered on August 28, 1963 at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C to over 250,000 people on the National Mall. the speech was originally written as a homage to Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and was timed to correspond with the 100-year centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation.

“I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today.”

NOTE: Martin Luther King Jr. was named “Man of the Year” by TIME magazine in 1963, and was the youngest person ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The full speech did not appear in writing until August 1983, 15 years after his death, when a transcript was published in The Washington Post. The Library of Congress added the speech to the United States National Recording Registry in 2002. The National Park Service dedicated an inscribed marble pedestal to commemorate the speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 2003.

Escoffier’s Classic Peach Melba Recipe

16003219_1645775008782392_5014917064702479616_n

Escoffier’s Classic Peach Melba Ingredients

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups water
1 ¾ cups sugar
2 tbsp lemon juice
½ tsp vanilla extract
4 peaches (fresh fruit is preferred, but canned peaches will work)
1 pint vanilla ice cream (or substitute frozen yogurt or dairy-free)

Raspberry Sauce:
1 ½ cups fresh raspberries
2 tbsp confectioner’s sugar
½ tbsp lemon juice

Instructions:
1. Combine water, sugar, lemon juice and vanilla extract in a large saucepan. Heat on low until sugar has dissolved. Increase heat to medium and bring to a boil. Cook at boiling for about 3 minutes and then return to simmer.
2. Cut the peaches in half. Place in the sugar syrup and poach about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Test with a knife to determine if they are done and when finished poaching, place them on a plate to cool.
3. After the peaches have cooled, peel off the skin and remove the pits.
4. For raspberry sauce: combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender and puree until very smooth. Strain through a colander and into a bowl.
5. Assemble the dessert by placing 2 peach halves in a bowl along with a scoop of ice cream. Spoon raspberry sauce on top and serve immediately.

Depression? Questions to Ask – Before Giving Up!

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and depression may make you feel as if life isn’t worth living.

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, get help right away!

Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

Depression? Questions to Ask – Before Giving Up!

Are you hydrated? If not, have a glass of water.

Have you eaten in the past three hours? If not, get some food — something with protein, not just simple carbs. Perhaps some nuts or hummus?

Have you showered in the past day? If not, take a shower right now.

Have you stretched your legs in the past day? If not, do so right now. If you don’t have the energy for a run or trip to the gym, just walk around the block, then keep walking as long as you please. If the weather’s crap, drive to a big box store (e.g. Target) and go on a brisk walk through the aisles you normally skip.

Have you said something nice to someone in the past day? Do so, whether online or in person. Make it genuine; wait until you see something really wonderful about someone, and tell them about it.

Have you moved your body to music in the past day? If not, jog for the length of an EDM song at your favorite tempo, or just dance around the room for the length of an upbeat song.

Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days? If not, do so. Don’t be afraid to ask for hugs from friends or friends’ pets. Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; you’re not imposing on them.

Have you seen a therapist in the past few days? If not, hang on until your next therapy visit and talk through things then.

Have you changed any of your medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand? That may be screwing with your head. Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesn’t settle down.

If daytime: are you dressed? If not, put on clean clothes that aren’t pajamas. Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether it’s a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.

If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep? Put on pajamas, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes — no electronic screens allowed. If you’re still awake after that, you can get up again; no pressure.

Do you feel ineffective? Pause right now and get something small completed, whether it’s responding to an e-mail, loading up the dishwasher, or packing your gym bag for your next trip. Good job!

Do you feel unattractive? Take a goddamn selfie. Your friends will remind you how great you look, and you’ll help fight society’s restrictions on what beauty can look like.

Do you feel paralyzed by indecision? Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.

Have you over-exerted yourself lately — physically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually? That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether it’s physical rest, taking time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment.

Have you waited a week? Sometimes our perception of life is skewed, and we can’t even tell that we’re not thinking clearly, and there’s no obvious external cause. It happens. Keep yourself going for a full week.

Symptoms of Depression:

  • Feelings of sadness, emptiness, guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or unhappiness
  • Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, such as sex
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
  • Tiredness, fatigue and lack of energy, so that even small tasks take extra effort
  • Changes in appetite — often reduced appetite and weight loss, but also overeating and increased cravings for food and weight gain in some people
  • Anxiety, agitation or restlessness — for example, excessive worrying, pacing, hand-wringing or an inability to sit still
  • Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that are not your responsibility
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
  • Frequent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide
  • Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, get help right away!

Overlapping haikus (for a friend)

What the f*ck is up?
Your haiku is depressing.
Stop with the bullsh*t.
I hope you feel better now.
Don’t try suicide.
Why do you need a semi-colon?
You have survived.
You are loved by many.
Have a nice today.

UPDATED 11-14-19: Did you know that if you text 741741 when you are feeling depressed, suicidal or anxious, a crisis worker will text you back and continue to text with you? Many people, especially younger folks, do not like talking on the phone and would be more comfortable texting. It’s a free service to ANYONE – teens, adults, etc. – who lives in the U.S. It’s run by The Crisis Text Line and is legit.

It’s ok to not be ok sometimes. People care about you and the world would not be the same without you in it. ❤️
