Happy Cinco de Mayo! It’s May the 5th! Celebrate!

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Mexico’s Independence Day (from Spain) is celebrated on September 16.

IT’S TEQUILA TIME! Tequila is the general name for a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, produced in the specific region surrounding the city of Tequila, 40 miles northwest of Guadalajara and in the highlands (Los Altos) of the central western Mexican state of Jalisco. Mexican law states that Tequila can only be produced in the state of Jalisco and in certain places in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas.

Blended Margarita

The two basic categories of tequila are mixtos and 100% agave. Mixtos use no less than 51% agave, with other sugars making up the remainder. Mixtos use both glucose and fructose sugars. Tequila is usually bottled in one of five categories:

  • Blanco (“white”) or plata (“silver”): white spirit, unaged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation, or aged less than two months in stainless steel or neutral oak barrels
  • Joven (“young”) or oro (“gold”): unaged silver tequila that may be flavored with caramel coloring, oak extract, glycerin, or sugar-based syrup. Could also be the result of blending silver tequila with aged and/or extra-aged tequila.
  • Reposado (“rested”): aged a minimum of two months, but less than a year in oak barrels of any size
  • Añejo (“aged” or “vintage”): aged a minimum of one year, but less than three years in small oak barrels
  • Extra Añejo (“extra aged” or “ultra aged”): aged a minimum of three years in oak barrels, this category was established in March 2006.

Strawberry Margarita!

The traditional margarita uses Tequila, Cointreau and lime juice, though many variations exist and a large number of tequila drinks are made by adding fruit juice. The International Bartenders Association (IBA Official list of Cocktails) standard is 7:4:3, that is, 50% tequila, 29% Cointreau and 21% fresh lime juice

The standard margarita is a cocktail consisting of tequila, triple sec and lime or lemon juice, often served with salt on the rim of the glass. The drink is served shaken with ice (on the rocks), blended with ice (frozen margarita) or without ice (straight up).

Margarita:
1 ounce tequila
Dash of Triple Sec (or Cointreau)
Juice of 1/2 lime or lemon
Pour over crushed ice and stir. Rub the rim of a stem glass with rind of lemon or lime, spin in salt. Take care to moisten only the outer rim and apply the salt on it. The salt should just coat the rim and never mix into the cocktail. Add fresh fruit or juice for more flavor!

TEQUILA!

Tequila Sunrise:
3 oz (6 parts) Orange juice
1-1/2 oz (3 parts) Tequila
1/2 oz (1 part) Grenadine syrup
Pour the tequila and orange juice into glass over ice. Add the grenadine, which will sink to the bottom. Do not stir. Garnish and serve on the rocks in a collins glass.

~ A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Act 4, Sc 2

In 1989, we traveled to Stratford-upon-Avon and London, England as a consultant to Homer “Murph” Swander’s “Theatre in England” (associated with UC Santa Barbara).

We saw 13 plays in 3 weeks at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s theaters in Stratford, and at The Pit, the National and Barbican in London. We saw Mark Rylance perform the title role of “Hamlet” in pajamas in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the role of Romeo in “Romeo & Juliet” in The Swan Theatre. We also saw “Two Gentlemen of Verona”, “Cymbeline”, “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” and many other non-Shakespearean classical performances. We even saw Dustin Hoffman perform Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice” in London (his first time doing Shakespeare on stage).

NOTE: While in Stratford-upon-Avon, we had the pleasure to meet and drink with many of the RSC actors after the performances at the Falcon Hotel Bar across the street from the theatre. In addition, some of the RSC actors spoke, performed and answered questions at scheduled daytime meetings of our travel group. We also toured Broughton Castle.

Going to Hawaii? Save a Dog’s Life!

Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Air Canada and Aloha Air Cargo say dogs can accompany returning flyers on a nonstop flight to Seattle, Portland, San Diego or Oakland and be delivered to shelters on the mainland for adoption!

10911460_1058551390838093_157341414843803767_o

The Kauai and Maui Humane societies are seeking passengers returning from Hawaii to escort a dog or two to the mainland on their next trip. These transfer programs help save dog’s lives by sending them to Washington, Oregon and California animal shelters rather than being euthanized…

All you do is sign up and they travel back with you. Volunteers on both ends handle all the logistics. The Kauai and Maui shelters pay the discounted rate given by the airline and will provide the dog crate, as well as the necessary medical papers. All you have to do is show up for your flight as scheduled, they’ll do the rest!

Contact them with your flight date & destination:

V-O-T-E spells VOTE! “Rock The Vote” 1990 – Censorship is UnAmerican!

V-O-T-E spells VOTE! “Rock The Vote” 1990
CENSORSHIP IS UNAMERICAN!

(this has a been a public service announcement)

rock-the-vote

So here’s a little personal history from the late 1980’s and early 90’s.

I graduated from UCSC in 1987 with a degree in Theatre Arts, and moved to Novato in Marin County, north of San Francisco. After living and working in the Bay Area for a year, I returned to Los Angeles to work in the entertainment business.

My very first “Hollywood” job as a Production Assistant (PA) was for a company called Highlight Commercials in 1989. I worked for them on the first “Rock the Vote” PSAs for Virgin Records with Iggy Pop and Anthony Kiedis (and a bunch of other celebrities) on the Chaplin Stage at A&M Records in Hollywood. I was paid $50 a day for three days of work.

Virgin Records “Rock the Vote” Campaign – “Censorship is UnAmerican!” PSAs for MTV with Iggy Pop and Other Celebrities – Press Photo & Copy 1990

This is a still from the first “Rock the Vote” Censorship is UnAmerican video campaign in 1990. I was the Production Assistant wrapping the cellophane tape around Iggy Pop! Filmed in 1989 on the Chaplin Stage at A&M Studios (now Henson Studios) in Hollywood with Iggy Pop, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Kiedes, Justine Bateman, Louis Perez, Blair Underwood and others. Oh, and yes, CENSORSHIP IS STILL UNAMERICAN!

I found a rundown/synopsis of the some of the PSA shoot:

3:49 Iggy Pop reads First Amendment: As he reads, he is gradually having tape wrapped around his body. At the end, the tape covers his mouth. “Express yourself. Vote.” (I was the guy wrapping Iggy in the tape!)

NOTE: I finally found the Iggy Pop PSA! The page has links to all the spots!

5:49 Justine Bateman: “You might as well be invisible if you don’t vote. You’ve got everyone telling you what to do. You don‘t want people telling you what to see. Express yourself. Vote. It’s your life, it’s your world.”

6:50 Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Higher Ground music video plays. “If you love your freedom, fight censorship. Express yourself. Vote.”

7:50 Anthony Kiedis: “Most beautiful and powerful ingredient in America – freedom of speech.”

“Rock The Vote” – Censorship is UnAmerican PSA – Virgin Records 1990

In 1989, a group of Virgin Records executives began the “Rock the Vote” campaign in response to the Recording Industry’s Parental Advisory Labeling and Tipper Gore’s attempt to censor American music. The campaign partnered with MTV and the most popular, outspoken and controversial artists of the time to rally young voters to protect the First Amendment of the Constitution and encourage more people to vote.

Madonna’s 1990 PSA eclipsed all the other Celebrity Spots. Draped in an American flag, Madonna, flanked by two male dancers in cutoff denim shorts, raps an acapella version of “Vogue” about the First Amendment and replaces the lyrics with “get up and vote!”

NOTE: The next job I worked for Highlights was a Lady Stetson perfume commercial.

History of THE PMRC and CENSORSHIP in the 1980’s:

The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was a committee formed in 1985 with the goal of increasing parental control over the access of children to music deemed to be violent or sexually suggestive. The committee was founded by four women: Tipper Gore, wife of Senator and later Vice President Al Gore; Susan Baker, wife of Treasury Secretary James Baker; Pam Howar, wife of Washington realtor Raymond Howar; and Sally Nevius, wife of Washington City Council Chairman John Nevius. They were known as the “Washington wives”

The PMRC began in 1984 after Tipper Gore, along with her daughter Karenna, heard Prince’s song “Darling Nikki”, which appears on the soundtrack to the film Purple Rain, contains references to sex and masturbation (“I knew a girl named Nikki/I guess you could say she was a sex fiend/I met her in a hotel lobby/Masturbating with a magazine”). Rap music of the mid to late 80s, especially artists that were deemed violent, particularly Ice-T and Run DMC furthered their influence in American politics. Ice-T was personally accused by Tipper Gore with support from the PMRC for the increasing rates of violence against police officers in Los Angeles in the late 80s.

The PMRC also released the “Filthy Fifteen”, a list of the 15 songs they found most objectionable:

1 Prince “Darling Nikki” Sex
2 Sheena Easton “Sugar Walls” Sex
3 Judas Priest “Eat Me Alive” Sex
4 Vanity “Strap on Robbie Baby” Sex
5 Mötley Crüe “Bastard” Violence
6 AC/DC “Let Me Put My Love into You” Sex
7 Twisted Sister “We’re Not Gonna Take It” Violence
8 Madonna “Dress You Up” Sex
9 W.A.S.P. “Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)” Sex/Language
10 Def Leppard “High ‘n’ Dry (Saturday Night)” Drug and alcohol use
11 Mercyful Fate “Into the Coven” Occult
12 Black Sabbath “Trashed” Drug and alcohol use
13 Mary Jane Girls “In My House” Sex
14 Venom “Possessed” Occult
15 Cyndi Lauper “She Bop” Sex

The PMRC also advocated against supposed subliminal backmasking in records and (incorrectly) accused bands including Iron Maiden, Styx, Rush, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Kiss and Queen of backmasking to promote Satanism and/or drug use.

In August 1985, 19 record companies agreed to put “Parental Guidance: Explicit Lyrics” labels on albums to warn of explicit lyrical content. Before the labels could be put into place, the Senate agreed to hold a hearing on so-called “porn rock”. This began on September 19, 1985, when representatives from the PMRC, three musicians–Dee Snider, Frank Zappa, John Denver–and Senators Paula Hawkins and Al Gore testified before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on “the subject of the content of certain sound recordings and suggestions that recording packages be labeled to provide a warning to prospective purchasers of sexually explicit or other potentially offensive content.”

The U.S. travel community has collectively marked the event in a number of creative ways, from staging local rallies and conducting media outreach to securing proclamations and resolutions from local legislative bodies. Each year, localized events are presented in cities, states and travel businesses nationwide to champion the power of travel.

This year’s theme is “Travel Effect”:

This theme aligns with the current industry-wide campaign to prove the benefits of travel.

Research studies on travel’s positive effect on relationships, health, education, meetings and more, provide opportunities to tailor messaging about the impact of travel. Access current economic impact data, including a state-by-state interactive map, to spotlight the Travel Effect in your area.

In 2014, Travel Effect will broaden its focus to examine America’s “Day Off Deficit” and explore what it could mean to individuals, businesses and the economy if U.S. workers were motivated to use more of the time off they’ve earned and deserve. Stay tuned for new research in the coming weeks.

Champion the Benefits of Travel! Travel Rally Day is Tuesday, May 6!

Travel Rally Day is a concerted effort to demonstrate travel’s positive impact on local workers, businesses and economies – and, of course, on personal lives of travelers. Individual events are staged in cities nationwide during National Travel and Tourism Week.

The goal of Rally Day is to unite the local travel community with its supporters and publicly represent the importance of travel to media and elected officials.
