Let’s Play “REMEMBER WHEN”
In the not so distant past…..
Home computers (the Radio Shack TRS-80, the Commodore PET and the Apple II) entered the market in 1977 and only became common in the 1980s. Even then, a 1985 study found during a typical week 40% of adult computer owners did not use their computers at all. Most systems included the BASIC programming language on the system ROM.
Remember Floppy Disks? Remember Dial-up Modems?
AmericaOnline began in 1983 as Control Video Corporation, didn’t change it’s name until 1989, and in 1993 was truly able to provide public internet access for Windows clients.

Remember the Dictionary? Remember Books and Newspapers?
NO CELL PHONES!
The first handheld mobile phone was demonstrated by Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing 4 and a half pounds. In 1983, the DynaTAC 8000x became the first commercially available handheld mobile phone.
Remember the Landline, the Pager (“Beeper”) and PayPhones?
We can still remember rotary telephones from our childhood! In the days before push buttons, you had to wait for the rotary dial to return to the fixed position before dialing the next number! And there was NO CALL WAITING and NO CALLER ID and NO REDIAL, so if you got a busy signal you would have to dial the whole number again! And if it was really important you had to call the Operator and make an “Emergency Breakthrough”….
NO CDs or DVDs!
Compact Disc (CD), introduced in 1982, could store much more data than a personal computer hard drive, which would typically hold 10 MB at the time. DVD (“digital versatile disc” or “digital video disc”) is a digital optical disc storage format invented in 1995.
Remember Cassette Tapes, Boomboxes and Walkmans?
Vinyl Albums! 8-Track Tapes?
Netflix Inc is an American multinational entertainment company founded on August 29, 1997 in Scotts Valley, California.
Remember renting VHS tapes at the Video Store (Blockbuster)?
Remember cable and network TV?
MTV launched on August 1, 1981! The original programming format was music videos hosted by television personalities called VJs (“video jockeys”). The concept itself had been around since 1966, when major record companies began supplying the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation with promotional music clips to play on air at no charge because most artists wouldn’t make the long trip to New Zealand to appear live.
The first Starbucks was opened in the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, on March 31, 1971, by three partners who met while they were students at the University of San Francisco. Starbucks Corporation is now the leading roaster, retailer and marketer of specialty coffee in the world. Its operations include more than 7300 coffee shops and kiosks in the United States, and around 3000 more in 34 other countries.
Peet’s Coffee & Tea is a San Francisco Bay Area based specialty coffee roaster and retailer founded in 1966 by Alfred Peet. He started Peet’s Coffee, Tea & Spices as a single store in 1966 on the corner of Walnut and Vine in Berkeley, California (where it is still located). Peet’s introduced the Bay Area and U.S. coffee retailing to darker roasted arabica coffee, such as French roast and grades appropriate for espresso drinks, and served as the model (and original coffee bean supplier) for Starbucks.
