What Do Puppies Dream About?

Keeping me occupied! There are a lot of cute pics of the new girls sleeping. They are adjusting very well to their life. I’ve nicknamed them “Bandit and the Bear” and “Little Angel and Little Demon” and they already have their own distinct personality traits at nine weeks.

The reason there are not more pics of the girls playing or being active is because I need both hands (for each one actually) to keep them out of trouble. They are very active and move extremely fast! They are exploring their territory and testing everything with their mouths. I love watching them discover new things like dirt, mud, sticks, leaves and wind!

They are eating solid food and eating very well. Bandit has been here 2 weeks, Bear has been here for one. Housebreaking is going well. Hand training (No Bitey!) is going well. Pen training is just beginning: they slept together in the pen all night and we left them home alone and went out for a quick sushi dinner tonight (Sunday) and they did great once they stopped playing, puppy fighting and dueling for toys with each other!

So, Monday morning 5am PST, and here is the WEEKEND PUPPY UPDATE.

It was a good weekend. The new baby is adjusting really well and learning very fast. She is eating a lot of solid food, gaining weight and working on being housebroken. She is such a sweetheart with a great personality, very feisty, stubborn and playful. She is also a fierce little girl and still a little “bitey” (she tests how hard she can nip) because she is still teething, so she has lots of toys (of varying hardness) to chew on. And she’s really fast! Because of the circumstances, we try not to let her get far away when we’re outside, even in the secured side yards. And we’re not letting them in the big yard even during the day until we get a new fence. There’s also an owl that lives in the eucalyptus tree and she is so little we’re not taking chances.

Normally we crate train our new puppies to house break them, but the new baby doesn’t like being caged and is exhibiting some signs of cage trauma, so she is roaming free and has already learned how to let us know she wants to go outside. She is still having accidents inside, but she is learning fast! She is sleeping on the bed in the office at night and has learned to use the doggie steps to get up and down.

SUNDAY NIGHT! Another new puppy arrives!

We decided not to wait and got another new puppy! She is also a cavachon, from a different litter than the new baby, and actually a little larger. She had a long flight and arrived at LAX around 8pm. She is beautiful, but still in a little state of shock from the traveling  adventure. She ate and slept and met the other dogs and just went out for her first poop, then she ate again. Later today she’ll go to the vet for a thorough exam (the new baby had her exam the day after she arrived too).

Saturday night in the beautiful San Fernando Valley on Van Nuys Blvd near the Government Center (Courthouses, Police Station, Post Office, etc.) at Erwin St.

There’s a large dining room with tables and booths along the side walls. And of course there’s a long bar, and a very nice one too. they also have a very small stage for live music on Fridays and Satudays and this was one of those nights.

Live Music on a Small Stage on Friday and Saturday

The live music was good. Two guys, one on guitar and one on a kid’s drum kit, singing and playing classic rock tunes while we enjoyed our Mexican dinner.

We were seated in a booth without having to wait and presented with a “classic” Mexican restaurant menu and warm chips, red pepper salsa and a bean dip.

This being our first time here, we decided to compare the Fiesta platter, a favorite found on most appetizer menus.

Fiesta Platter!

We enjoyed the food! It was classic Mexican, very tasty and they have pretty good chips and salsa. The Fiesta Platter was done well, but the nachos could have been better. My dining companions enjoyed their choices as well and the prices are very reasonable! They have lots of fun cocktails and drink specials on and off the menu. We would return if we were in the neighborhood on a Saturday, but probably not on a weekday.

A large, tasty chicken burrito (“wet” ranchero sauce & melted cheese) with rice and beans inside and tortilla chips “to go” for dinner a few nights ago. Only ate half, then ate the other half the next day for breakfast.

Happy Birthday! Green Tea Ice Cream

NOTE: It was great dinner and I am truly thankful. However, the circumstances of the weekend made it impossible to actually enjoy the party in my honor. In case you missed the previous blogs, two of our dogs were killed Thursday night by coyotes in our fenced backyard. Pretty much everything related to dogs is a “trigger” for a wave of hard emotion (sadness, guilt, grief & anger) and my dinner companions kept talking about dogs, the tragedy, coyotes and wolf urine…. it was extremely uncomfortable from start to finish and not a happy distraction.

Going to be fun training her. It’s also really hard because waves of sorrow keep hitting me hard off and on too. So, it’s been an emotional roller coaster ride all day long but now we have a beautiful new puppy!

UPDATE: Tuesday, August 16, 2016 – End of Day 3

Tuesday Afternoon!

“So gently swaying thru the fairyland of love,
if you’ll just come with me and see the beauty of Tuesday afternoon”

5 days and I miss them so much! Day 3 with the new puppy and she is a fun and furry handful! I’m loving this little girl and she’s also a great distraction because it’s hard to be sad when you’re enjoying the innocence and exuberance of a new puppy discovering the world. My Big Boy is super depressed and hasn’t fully accepted the new girl, it’s still too soon for him, and he constantly on alert when we go outside. So he’s getting a lot of love, extra attention and daily special time too.

She’s so little!

UPDATE Thursday, August 18, 2016 – End of Day 7 (just before midnight)

She is adjusting well to her new home and exploring everything. She learns really fast and is just a beautiful little girl.

Thursday Morning!

So it’s been 8 days since the tragedy and we’re dealing with the loss, it’s really hard and everyday there are reminders and there’s an emptiness here without them…

The little puppy is the best distraction and she is getting constant attention and love. And she’s getting bigger already! She went to the vet on Monday and the results from her stool sample showed that she has giardia (an intestinal parasitic infection) and maybe an ear infection, so she is on a couple daily medications. She’s always hungry now and been eating well since the last update. She very active, feisty and fast. And very curious about the borders of the rooms and yards when she roams free.

The Big Boy has been very depressed and really misses his friends. He gets special time each day and we’ve been trying to get him to accept the new puppy. There was a little progress today but it’s still too soon for him and she’s still too little. She is fascinated by his big tail, but he is not amused when she attacks it. He’s being such a good boy and tolerating the new puppy’s attempts at play. He did growl at her a little today and backed her off once when she was biting on him.

Thursday night my two little girls were killed by coyotes in our backyard.

I loved my little girls beyond words and will treasure the memories and pictures of them. Two days later I am still totally devastated and overcome with grief at that loss of my babies and best friends. My third dog (the larger male) wasn’t hurt physically and that is my only comfort. I wasn’t even going to share this because of how horrible it is, but they were such beautiful, loyal, loving companions and so important to me that I’ll post through my tears. They had a great life and probably saved mine.

May the Four Winds blow them safely home.

Konstantin’s Piroshki Recipe!

Konstantin’s Piroshki Recipe (from the Renaissance Pleasure Faire)
From the article in “Sphere” magazine, “Come to the Faire” July 1975

Makes 10 Piroshkis
Ingredients:
1 package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
3/4 cup warm milk
1 Tablespoon sugar
1/2 tsp salt (1/2 tsp cinnamon – according to sources)
2 Cups all purpose flour
Beef Filling:
1 medium onion (fine chopped)
1 clove garlic (crushed)
1 Tablespoon butter or margarine
3/4 lean ground beef
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp white pepper
1 tsp dried dill weed
1 hard boiled egg (fine chopped)
Instructions:
Dissolve yeast in warm water in medium bowl. Stir in milk, sugar salt and enough flour to make dough easy to handle. Turn dough on to lightly floured board. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turn grease side up and cover with a towel. Let rise in warm place until it doubles ~ 45 minutes (Dough is ready if impression remains).
Make beef filling.
Punch down dough. Roll dough on floured board to 1/16 inch thickness. Cut into 10 5-inch circles.(It will be necessary to gather scraps and re-roll dough) Place 1/4 cup filling on each circle. Bring ends of dough together at center. Pinch edges together to seal so that Piroshki are plump in the center with tapered ends. Place Piroshki seam side down on greased baking sheets. Cover lightly with waxed paper and let rise for 45 minutes.
Heat oven to 375 degrees and bake until golden brown, 18 to 20 minutes. Serve hot with a dollup of sour cream or hot mustard if desired.
