Dinner at the Texas Roadhouse BBQ in Medford, Oregon

Our first night in Ashland, we had the fine idea to drive up to Medford (only about 20 minutes north on the 5 freeway) to the Texas Roadhouse BBQ for a big dinner.

Dinner at the Texas Roadhouse BBQ in Medford, Oregon

The first thing you’ll notice about the Texas Roadhouse BBQ is the decor. Lots of wood, brick, neon beer signs, farm and western chotckes, and more wood.

“New Country Rock” on the Jukebox at the Texas Roadhouse BBQ

The second thing you’ll notice is the noise… it’s very loud inside! The place is always busy and full of people. The hard wood surfaces and concrete floor amplify the noise and they play LOUD “New Country” music throughout the restaurant.

Shelled Peanuts at the Texas Roadhouse BBQ in Medford, Oregon

On The Menu: BBQ baby back pork ribs, bone-in ribeye steak with fries, side of chili, dinner salad, bread & butter, salted shelled peanuts and a coke.

The food was good. The steak was done right. They boil their ribs and they boiled these a long time. If you like boiled BBQ ribs you’ll probably like theirs. The portions are large, there are lots of side items to choose from, and it’s good “country music” time. If you don’t like loud country music, best to find another restaurant. It’s a good concept and the waitstaff will keep on dancing for your enjoyment!

Historic Downtown Cambria, California

Historic Downtown Cambria, California

Sunday afternoon on our walk around Cambria we discovered a lot of history!

So, we took a lot of pictures. Here’s a Blog with pictures of some of the historic buildings we saw: the Santa Rosa Church Chapel and Cemetery, the Cambria Historical Museum inside the Guthrie-Bianchini House, the Cambria Chinese Temple & Greenspace Creekside Reserve are functioning tourist attractions, while the Bluebird Inn Motel, the Bonomi House, the Taylor House, the Squibb House and many others have been restored and repurposed as commercial buildings housing retail businesses.

Chipotlé Burrito Test!

Chipotlé Burrito Test!

Believe it or not, I’ve never had Chipotlé. There are so many good Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley that chain restaurant “fast-food” from Chipotlé was never a “go-to” option.

We had a Coupon (and it was about to expire on May 1) for a FREE Burrito, Burrito Bowl or Order of Tacos at any Chipotlé Mexican Grill. And there’s one that opened up relatively recently in Encino on Ventura Blvd and we’ve wanted to try it for awhile now.

NOTE: We’ve been hesitant to eat at Chipotlé because of the recent “food-borne” illness news reports centered on the restaurant chain, which is why we call this a test.

So, Wednesday evening at 7pm we stopped and picked up an order “TO GO” for dinner on our way to our friend’s place in North Hollywood.

13116308_1376647532361809_2417342961082104252_o

There’s metered street parking on Ventura Blvd (8am-8pm) but you can’t park on the street between 4-7pm because it’s an ANTI-GRIDLOCK ZONE during “rush hour”, so there’s drive-in underground parking (which we can’t tell you about because we parked on the street just after 7pm).

The restaurant was clean and bright with a big letter “A” health rating on the front window which was good. It wasn’t very busy and there wasn’t any wait to order, which is always of concern at fast service restaurants where the food sits and waits for a customer.

The young guy behind the register said hello from across the empty front area as we entered. The young woman who prepared the order was very business-like and efficient, but not very friendly (and she shorted us on the steak…yes we noticed that sneaky move!) as she quickly made our Burrito Bowl.

13064764_1376647539028475_2550342718103513166_o

On The Menu: A Burrito Bowl with 1/2 chicken, 1/2 steak, 1/2 black beans, 1/2 pinto beans, 1/2 brown rice, 1/2 white rice, hot sauce, guacamole, lettuce and a large flour tortilla

NOTE: We read a food article about “How to get the best value at Chipotlé” which said that if you order the Burrito Bowl with 1/2 of each ingredient, you will get more food than if you order a Burrito or a Burrito Bowl with single ingredients. And of course you have to get the guacamole (on the side) for a “small additional charge”.

We exchanged the food for the coupon and took it “TO GO” We drove over to our friend’s place and ate after we arrived, so the food traveled in the car for about 15 minutes. We removed the lettuce from the bowl and heated the meat, rice and beans in the microwave for a minute to get it hot again. We emptied the contents of the bowl onto the tortilla, added the guacamole, took a few pics, rolled it up into a very large burrito and promptly ate the whole thing (except the lettuce, which we didn’t eat at all) and it was okay. Not great, but we were very hungry so it was good. And the price was right, it was FREE.

“Rub-A-Dub-Dub Thanks For The Grub!”

We would eat there again, but it still wouldn’t be a first choice for “fast casual” Mexican food, It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great. It was okay and it was an okay value. There was a lot of food in that large burrito and we don’t feel sick the next day.

We like to eat at Mucho Mas in NoHo. And we also like to call, order and pick up a very large and tasty Chicken Burrito with rice and beans “Gringo Style” (with melted cheese and red sauce on top) from Las Fuentes Mexican Restaurant on Vanowen just east of Reseda Blvd in Reseda for about the same price as Chipotlé:

We got recently got one “TO GO” with fresh made chips, a large avocado salsa, and a variety of different salsas from the salsa bar and we made the fresh guacamole at home before going to pick up the order.

Best “Weekend Getaway” From Los Angeles?

Best “weekend getaway” from Los Angeles?

Here’s a Q&A from another saved draft. This is a Travel Blog.

IMG05396-20130627-1415

Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California (copyright 2013 JoshWillTravel)

Q: My mom is coming to visit me in Venice for a week in April and we want to getaway! We’re looking for a destination to relax, hit up the spa, wine taste or have a great meal, do some boutique shopping, and maybe go for an easy hike? Since this will be for 1-2 nights, would like to keep it within 3 hours (one way). Out of all the amazing places, if you have to pick 1 destination for a visitor to see, what is the best destination for a weekend getaway from L.A. and why?

A: A fantastic Spa Weekend “Getaway” that meets your description can be experienced at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village. It’s a beautiful full-service, luxury four star resort just north of Los Angeles with free self-parking.

The hotel has an amazing spa and pool facility with all the amenities. There’s fine dining on-site and in Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Agoura, Moorpark, Malibu or the Pacific Palisades (and the hotel also provides a shuttle that will take you to the beach).

Watch the sunset and enjoy a cocktail on the deck at Moonshadows Malibu or have an amazing $u$hi meal at Nobu Malibu. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner at the Saddle Peak Lodge, Cafe Firenze or one of the many fine restaurants nearby. We’ve heard about (and seen pictures of) the fabulous desserts at CHOCOLATINE Café French Pastries.

There is great easy hiking nearby in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. We recommend the Paramount Ranch (“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” filming site), Malibu Creek State Park (“MASH” filming site) or Point Dume State Beach.

There are also some nice wineries to visit nearby: Malibu Wines, SIP Malibu, Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards, Cornell Winery & Tasting Room and others are open to the public.

Horseback riding, shopping of all kinds, beach activities, nightlife options and more are all available locally. The hotel also offers cooking classes, other educational programs and fun activities.

Good hikes in LA or surrounding areas?

Q: I have done a few in Malibu and Hollywood but looking for more ideas!

A: A great place to hike in Los Angeles is the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills and other trails in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Park entry and parking are free! Topanga State Park, Malibu Creek State Park, Rocky Oaks Park, Stunt Ranch State Park, Will Rogers State Historic Park, Temescal Canyon Park and Point Dume State Beach all have great hiking. Entrance fees and parking vary by location.

To Paramount Ranch: Exit Kanan Rd off the 101 freeway, turn left towards the beach, just past Agoura Rd make a left on Cornell Rd and drive to the park entrance. Park near the Ranger Station and enter through the Western Town film location.

Renting a Car in Honolulu?

Renting a Car in Honolulu?

Will You Need A Rental Car in Hawaii?
Here’s a Q&A from a saved draft. This is a Travel Blog.
Sharing it now for #TravelTuesday!

Hawaii 23

Waikiki Beach – Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii (copyright 2010 JoshWillTravel)

Q: Is there a difference in reserving a rental car here or when we land in Honolulu? Any rental companies you’d recommend or avoid?

A: Internet before you arrive!

Check each Rental Car Company WEBSITE for best deal! They run 24 hour cycles for car rentals, so if possible arrange your pickup and drop off in 24 hour increments. You can also get a deal on week long rental if you’ll be there that long. Also, you’ll get better rates away from the airport rental office (you won’t pay airport fees), so if they have another location rent from them. (they might even offer delivery to your hotel and you can usually get a free shuttle from the airport)

NOTE: Each company’s rates and availability vary wildly depending on what events are happening, the day of the week, the weather, “hotel block” specials and many other factors, so reserve ahead of time VIA TELEPHONE (not the internet) if possible and always get a confirmation number and the name, employee number and direct phone number of the employee you booked the reservation with.

AAA offers discounts, join the rental car company “customer card” loyalty program before searching for rates (they always offer upgrades and discounts) and check with the hotel for a package deal/discount or free rental! You probably don’t need additional insurance coverage, but check with your own car insurance company and make sure you are covered when driving a rental car in the destination location! If you have travel insurance, that may also cover you. Check and see if the resort fee at the hotel covers parking too.

They also may try to sell you GPS and additional upgrades, add-on services or amenities with your basic rental. Buyer beware! Do you need that GPS or can you just use your smartphone? It’s a lot of fun to have a convertible or a jeep, but how much more will it cost and how much driving will you really be doing on Oahu? Remember to figure the cost of fuel into your budget and the higher gas prices in Hawaii!

NOTE: Once you’ve found the best deal for a rental car, check and see about package deals/vacation companies that will save you money with a bundled “air-hotel-rental car” package or consult a travel advisor for additional service and a price quote.

Plan ahead! Make your reservation well in advance and watch for any specials that might be offered after you reserve (they’ll usually allow you to change to the lowest rate). Be sure to plan your connection from the airport to the rental car company location, most offer free shuttles, or you can arrange other transport. It’s always best to do your research and make your arrangements and reservations prior to arrival.

Naked, Unafraid and Mentally Ill! We Love L.A.!

Naked, Unafraid and Mentally Ill! We Love L.A.!

So there was another high speed pursuit on the Los Angeles freeways the other night…

How many police officers does it take to arrest a naked woman? After leading the LAPD, CHP, LA Sheriffs and Pasadena Police on a 100mph chase from Glendale to Thousand Oaks to Simi Valley to Pasadena to DTLA for over 2 hours, the female driver parked her SUV in the alley and wandered around the street (and she tried to get in the club and she was interviewed by a guy with a camera who followed her around) for 20+ minutes before the first LAPD officer finally arrived to arrest her! Then she stripped off her clothes and at least 10 other LAPD units arrived to see the naked suspect in custody. Your tax dollars at work while skid row and the rest of DTLA is left unprotected.

13094146_802860996485441_6498711926677000967_n

First Police Unit arrives and she strips off all her clothes

She had an incident at a family gathering and tried to hit her parents with the car before ramming several other cars. When police arrived she took the family SUV on a high speed pursuit on the 134 freeway to the 101 freeway north to the 23 freeway to Simi Valley and the 118 freeway east to Pasadena and then through Chinatown and Skid Row and finally to the location where the car chase ended and the real insanity begins.

The original incident happened at around 10:30pm just in time for the 11 o’clock news, all of whom bailed on the chase in order to switch to network late-night programming, although the internet feeds continued.  Thankfully, CBS 2 and KCAL 9 internet stream carried it to its conclusion.

She parked the car in the alley, waited on the street, tried to get into a club, waited on the street, tried to get into the club again. Then a stringer arrived and interviewed her, then she wandered around the block trying to avoid the stringer and tried to get in the club again as other people came out of the club and got involved. She wasn’t having anything to do with them and wandered around the street some more trying to avoid the stringer.

13076858_802858983152309_1290173353172347541_n

She stands naked and surrenders to the First Police Unit

When the first Police officers arrived she ran back into the alley when she saw them, then came back onto the street and stripped off all her clothes and surrendered. The first officers on scene approached her carefully, and they had her “laser-sighted” with tasers and sidearms, and then took her into custody on the sidewalk. They handcuffed her and placed a flannel shirt or blanket over her as many other units arrived on scene to see the “Naked Suspect” now under control. After holding her on the sidewalk, she threw off the blanket and then they walked her over to another police vehicle and had to pull her into the backseat.

NOTE: Even after a 2 hour long pursuit with speeds as high as 100 mph, there were no police behind her in DTLA and no units responding to her location for 20+ minutes. She was obviously a danger to herself and others, and in addition to her crazy behavior at the cause of the chase, she could have killed someone during or after the pursuit.

From Laist.com:

“The saga began sometime around 10:30 p.m. in Pasadena, when police responded to a 9-1-1 call from the woman’s parents for assault with a deadly weapon. Before her parents called Pasadena police, 32-year-old Simone Gonzalez allegedly attempted to run both of them over with a car. KABC reports that Gonzalez also hurled a brick through a window at her parents’ house, and rammed ‘a few’ of the cars parked on the property.

Police responded and discovered a “verbal altercation” situation at the Pasadena home. Gonzalez fled briefly in the family’s SUV, but returned to the house shorty thereafter. Pasadena Police officers spotted the SUV near the house and began to pursue….

…Gonzalez was eventually spotted in downtown Los Angeles around 12:30 a.m., trying to get inside a bar close to the intersection of 3rd and Main streets. LAPD officers responded and attempted to take Gonzalez into custody, though by the time police arrived she had begun removing her clothing.

Though police called off the chase, stringers followed Gonzalez into downtown. Their cameras were rolling as she stripped, capturing a disjointed monologue. Asked why she was running from police, Gonzalez replied that she was the police. “Ran from what? Ran where, sir? I am a trained policeman…You are a legal a slave trader. I am with the police everywhere,” she said.

Her parents mentioned to KABC that Gonzalez has a history of mental illness. Pasadena Police eventually arrested her for assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, felony evading, and felony vandalism.”

So how many police officers does it take to finally arrest a naked woman in DTLA?

We support our local, state and federal law enforcement officers! We truly appreciate the difficult and dangerous job they do and the protection they provide! There are absolutely times when prompt response and overwhelming force are called for and officers are there on the scene. Here are pics from three different pursuits: the first, a morning rush-hour chase, ended at the Reseda Blvd exit of the 101 freeway when the “Armed Subject” turned left off the freeway and then made a u-turn to double back and got stuck in traffic. Note the CROSSFIRE situation at the end of the chase and the overwhelming law enforcement response. The second chase, a 16 year old girl led a dangerous high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle across south Los Angeles until the car was disabled and she surrendered. The third, a Monday morning chase that ended on  5 freeway north at Atlantic in Commerce. Notice the overwhelming response by local law enforcement and a quick arrest at the end of all three.

Someone’s got a bad case of the Mondays!

And remember kids, driving and huffing nitrous nonstop don’t mix!

End of Police pursuit in Panorama City on ABC. The car is disabled with a flat tire. Police have the suspect surrounded and he’s sitting in the car filling balloons and huffing nitrous while they watch! Here’s a pic in case you couldn’t visualize it:
