Shamu is the name used for several SeaWorld orca (killer whale) shows and is the stage name given to the “star” of those shows, beginning with the original Shamu in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The orca Shamu died in 1971, but the names Shamu (and “Namu” and “Ramu”) were trademarked by SeaWorld and have been given to different orcas at different times when performing in the Shamu shows

“We are one of the world’s foremost zoological organizations and collectively care for one of the largest zoological collections on the North American continent.  Our commitment to animals extends around the world through significant financial contributions and resource support for conservation, wildlife rescue and education programs worldwide.”

Caring is at Our Core
Inspiring care is at the heart of our company’s mission, and we support three related areas of philanthropic focus: children, education, and the environment.

We are committed to the communities in which we live, learn, work and play. We also partner with charities across the country whose values and missions are aligned with our own, including hospitals, organizations that serve children with disabilities, and animal shelter and rescue groups. Whether it be long-term strategic support to advance their mission, financial support, in-kind resources, or hands-on volunteer work, caring is an active part of the work we do.

Our parks inspire children and guests of all ages through the power of entertainment, and our company’s philanthropic efforts reflect this commitment. We extend educational outreach visits to inner-city schools, host “special wish” children to enjoy park adventures, and create Skype visits with our animals for children too ill to travel.

Additionally, many of our more than 23,000 passionate team members also live out this commitment in their personal  lives by volunteering to visit local children’s hospitals, helping out at animal shelters, and participating in events like beach clean-ups and recycling fairs.”
